Product Description
Most studies of Southeast Asian economic change focus on the phenomenal growth experienced by a few large cities, such as Jakarta, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Big business has been viewed as the economic engine fueling the region's growth and prosperity. Studies of the rural areas have concerned themselves with the social and environmental impact of metropolitan growthvillages emptied by migration to the big cities, cultures crushed by tourist development, and agribusiness and lush landscapes destroyed by the devastation of natural resources.

The literature reveals that few analysts have examined the middle distance between metropolis and countryside. The contributors to this book have addressed the issue by concentrating on the intermediate level of economic, political, and social life the world of Thailand's provincial cities and market towns.

In the past decade the rise of frequently violent competition for business and political leadership in the Thai provinces, and the growing importance of provincial support for national powerholders, has drawn attention to the way in which these town and village centers are being transformed by capitalist development. This volume brings together some of the research inspired by this, drawing on a variety of disciplinary approaches, national backgrounds, and sites of study. ... Read more

Product Description
Remembering is socially constructed through a range of social activities, ranging from rituals to political events. The social activities presented here are in the context of"crisis of modernity" experiences related to processes such as secularization, integration into the modern nation-state and global economy, and the expansion of the mass media. These processes are linked to the rapid transformation of social and cultural reality, to an increasing sense of insecurity and anxiety in the present and to crises of identity.

The book makes a significant theoretical contribution to the study of social memory. It will be of considerable value to scholars interested in the ways people of Thailand and Laos are responding to the rapid and radical changes brought about by modernity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How and why concerning corruption
Today I finished this book which was reprintet i 2001. So I now own 8 books about Thailand and are going to by som more.

Concerning Thailand I this year, before the actual book, read Pasuk Phongpaichits updatet book about Thaksin. But this book about corruption have to do with why there are corruption and what to do to finish it, or make it smaller. There are mentioned some cases where corruption are as big at 30 - 40 % af the total project. And one case where it was 100 %! For making corruption smaler the saleri has to be increased for the peopel working for the state, especially concerningpolice, so the don't need the connection to the godfathers.

There are many detailed cases concerning corruption and especially how the corruption has to do with the MP's, that is who that get into the parlament. And thereby the problem learning what a democracy rearly are. As the history shows voting being bought by money. And even for exampel high police positions bought by money.

And also mentioned how a godfather was going to be the prime minister in 1991 untill it showed up that he had not been allowed to visit USA as he had had to do with 40 tons of marihuana that had got in USA.

So the book bouth is good and detailet about how and why corruption works and besides as a histori about Thailands problem with learning how democracy works.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good in-depth information
This gave a very good background to the structure of Thai politics. Easy to read but a bit dry and repetitive at times. ... Read more
