Thanksgiving: a time for family, friends, and huge platters of savory foodstuffs. Every year you look forward to a slow-roasted turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, and succulent dressing. Sometimes you get it. Other times, the turkey is dry, the dressing overseasoned, and the marshmallow sweet potato casserole gloppy. Whether you need to improve your traditional repertoire or you're looking for new recipes, The Thanksgiving Cookbook is the way to go.

Filled with traditional, variations-on-the-traditional, and nouveau recipes, The Thanksgiving Cookbook offers more than 340 ways to create your own personal Thanksgiving. Start with light appetizers of Honey-Roasted Almonds and Smoked Salmon Mousse to whet the appetite (and to keep hungry guests out of the kitchen). For the main dish, there's always turkey, or try your hand at a capon, goose, duck, or standing rib roast. Author Holly Garrison gives tips on buying your main course and how to clean, cook, and carve it. Serve with relishes like Gingery Apple Relish or Spicy Cranberry Conserve and sides of Mashed Potatoes and Carrots, Braised Endive and Pears, and Steamed Asparagus and Green Onions. And the dressings: New Orleans Oyster Dressing, Winter Vegetable Stuffing, and Sausage, Mincemeat, and Cornbread Stuffing, to name a few. There's a whole chapter on creating smooth, hearty gravies to go with your meal. Don't forget a bread basket filled with Double Corn Muffins and Seeded Bread Sticks. If you're not groaning now, you will be by the time you get to the Autumn Cherry Pie and the Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce.

The Thanksgiving Cookbook "devoted to all the familiar and comforting foods of Thanksgiving" makes you hungry and nostalgic. And it almost--almost--makes you wish that you were having 25 to dinner so you could try more of the mouthwatering recipes. --Dana Van NestBook Description

5-0 out of 5 stars The Thanksgiving Cookbook by Garrison
This book is an excellent reference for holiday cooking.
It includes many traditional Thanksgiving favorites; such as,
roasted chestnuts, dried cherry and tomato preparations.
The author explains how to decorate food. An example is the
citrus twist. Holiday wines are described; such as,
Chardonnay and others. Exotic Hors D'Oeuvres are described
in detail; such as , cheese biscuit, the raw veggie dip and
others. Famous soup preparations are fully described; such as,

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to Thanksgiving......
I've got several Williams-Sonoma Thanksgiving cookbooks, and always refer to my November back issues of Bon Appetit and Gourmet as well each year. After reading the 1st few chapters of this book, I already know where my ideas are coming from this year. This book is terrific - filled with many recipes the likes of which you won't find elsewhere. The author also gives great food and table decorating tips, as well as what not to do on Thanksgiving. She also has many recipes which can be made ahead of time. One on my list for this year is the Sweet Potato Balls - especially good for kids.Mashed sweet potatoes wrapped around a marshmallow, then rolled in crushed corn flakes and baked. If you are like me, and love planning and cooking for Thanksgiving, get a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK FOR MY TWO FAVORITE HOLIDAYS
Boy, right when Halloween is over I am in full Thanksgiving mode.I've been doing Thanksgiving dinner for my family for over ten years and each ear I seek out at least one or two new recipes to try out on my guinea pigs....errr...guests.This book is culled from the most wonderful recipe site on the internet, allrecipes.com.Long has this been a favored site of mine and millions of other cooks as well. The editors have pulled together 200 of the finest holiday recipes for inclusion in the book.

Among the most valuable sections is the one on preparing for the big feast.it covers what can be done a month before such as getting the invitations out, ordering the turkey or ham, etc. Then we move to two weeks before and prepare by getting making sure you have all the necessary utensils, roasters, and pots, and figuring out where to sit people and your needed space. All this leads up to the big day as you cook the bird and prepare everything else.

From there we move to the recipes and everything from a traditional roasted turkey, to prime rib, deep fried turkey, Alaskan baked Salmon, and honey glazed turkey.I admit I stick to the traditional turkey but I love the vast amount of wonderful side dish recipes. This past Thanksgiving I gave the cheesy green beans a whirl and they were a big hit.Rolls, stuffings, veggies, appetizers..they're all here and well represented.Ahh...and don't forget the deserts!Chocolate Chip Pumpkin bread!Wow...that was some good stuff!

The index is well presented and the recipes canebe found under several listings. For example the Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread will be found under Chocolate, Pumpkin and Breads, making for easy finding. This is one I just love to pull out when November rolls around.A fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the holidays
I just tried the marbled pumpkin cheesecake at a Halloween party and it was the best tasting mix between pumpkin pie and cheesecake I'd ever had! This book has it all, from simple roasted turkeys to delicious squash casseroles. I can't wait to try more this season!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for the Holidays
I, too, spent some time searching for the perfect holiday book before finally picking up this one.It has a great selection of easy-to-make recipes, all tested by home cooks across the nation.Allrecipes.com is my all-time favorite food website, and this book is a holiday dream come true!Happy eating!

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide for hosting a holiday gathering

Book Description
When we think about Thanksgiving we contemplate history, the autumn harvest, and, of course, eating turkey and watching football. But most of all, we think about family, friends, and the bounty of our country. Edward Bleier’s The Thanksgiving Ceremony introduces a brand-new tradition for the Thanksgiving table, offering a wonderful way for all Americans to give thanks and rejoice in the sense of togetherness and community this special holiday brings.

The heart of the book is a participatory ceremony designed to be read aloud around the table. It recounts the story of the early settlers and the challenges they, and all subsequent immigrant generations, faced. The ceremony provides roles for guests of all ages and takes about twenty minutes.

There is also a brief history of Thanksgiving, as well as a wide array of poems, hymns, songs, prayers, and readings that enable families to create and customize their own ceremony, including pieces by Maya Angelou, Irving Berlin, Woodie Guthrie, and Emily Dickinson.

As William Safire writes in his foreword, “Getting together for a grand dinner party may be glorious fun, but a holiday should have a focus”—one that reminds us why we celebrate it. This long-overdue book offers that focus in a short, elegant format that any gathering of family and friends can participate in, and enjoy, for many years to come.

Praise for The Thanksgiving Ceremony:

"The Thanksgiving Ceremony is a small gem—a book that brings to life the history, songs, and traditions, old and new, of the most widely celebrated holiday of the year. This is a buoyant book, full of hope and praise of all that makes us Americans."—Julie Nixon Eisenhower

"There are times, like these, when it's important to count our blessings. Ed Bleier's delightful book lets us do the math."—Alan Alda and Arlene Alda

"This great country has provided the 'music' and this book provides the eloquent 'lyrics' for the Thanksgiving tables of all Americans, regardless of race or religion. It's a joyous tribute to who we are, and can be, as Americans."—Quincy Jones

"Over the years, I've had so many Thanksgiving dinners with Ed and Magda that when Ed Bleier talks turkey, all of us listen."—Steven Spielberg

"The Thanksgiving Ceremony is a wonderful and moving idea. It is central to what we celebrate and a happy reminder of why America's principles endure as they do."—Peter Jennings and Kayce Freed ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
This has a nice history portion, and loads of trivia for Thanksgiving. It also has some nice Thanksgiving speeches and prayers. The recipies are tradtional, but not terribly imaginative, and the songs included in the book have no note to follow. It helps to have a melody so you can sing a long, and teach your kids the right way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reader from Atlanta
I have just discovered this very charming book The Thanksgiving Ceremony. In these extraordinary times "new traditions for America's Family Feast" is a glowing jewel.I am reminded that "it" is not about polished silver, starched linens, the right amount of sage in the stuffing, the side dishes, desserts or wine selections, who gets to carve, and whether or not you-know-who will embarrass everyone."It" is about our past and our future, fellowship, commitment, joy, perseverance and progress. And about faithful thanksgiving - every day.

Thank you - Ed Bleier - for writing this book. Our family will read it together on Thanksgiving Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREAT AMERICAN TRADITION
In many ways, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.Even though retailers are now jumpstarting Christmas even before Halloween, Thanksgving is still the true kickoff to the Holiday season.

Our traditions of turkey, pumpkin pie, football, family, christmas movies on TV and music on the radio are all a part of the wonderful Thanksgiving tradition.I suppose one of the great things about Thanksgiving is the many different ways that its celebrated regionally and family to family, as we all have our unique traditions that we uphold.

Mr. Bleier's book begins with an excellent history of the holiday, detailing not only the Pilgrims landing in Plymouth, but the reasons why they came, the people who came BEFORE they did, as well as how native Americans felt about the Pilgrims.

You'll know some of this history but I can guarantee much of it you will be reading for the very first time!

Mr. Bleier provides the inspiration that makes the Thanksgiving holiday so fun and meangingful in poems, songs, and stories. The book give us pause to remember what this great holiday is all about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Afocused, dignified andmeaningful Thanksgiving
Celebrated New York Times columnist William Safire, in his foreward to Edward Bleier' "The Thanksgiving Ceremony"
writes"a holiday should have a focus...that reminds us why we celebrate it"... This book does just that.

It tells us the history of Thanksgiving, the why, the when, the where ( I did not know itis celebrated in 7 other countries!) and, most importantly , itgives us a very original and moving ceremony to be readaloudbyall the guests- youngstersand adults-at the Thanksgiving table. This is a very inclusive and lovelynew tradition which I cannot wait touse atourown Thanksgiving next Thursday.

We'll be14 this year and I got 14 books... one for each guest. We'llsing some of the songs and read some of the poems also included in the book; this should addjoy and spirituality to the feast.

Thank you Mr Bleier for giving focus, dignity and new meaning to my favorite Holiday!

Book Description
Historical Thanksgiving Cookery is chock full of delightfully delicious ideas favored by many famous families of yesteryear. It contains the prized recipes for those Thanksgiving dishes served and eaten by some of the heroes of the Revolutionary War. You will be able to fix and then eat the same things served to those great men who so bravely signed the Declaration of Independence. You will be able to enjoy sharing an identical Thanksgiving meal with those who wore both the blue and the gray during the War Between the States, or as some unreconstructed Southerners still refer to it, the War of Northern Aggression.

Yes, every recipe found in this unique book was a popular favorite throughout the Thanksgiving holidays in our nation's long and colorful history. Many were coveted within a particular family and handed down from generation to generation. Others are historical gems, for they were the inventions of, or the favorites of, some notable family or individual from the past. Here they are being presented, for the first time, for America's families of today to have the fun and experience the thrill of cooking and baking. And lastly, to thankfully pass a blessing over before eating - be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner - on Thanksgiving Day. ... Read more

Book Description
In Congress, November 1, 1777: ...it is therefore recommended to the legislature of these UNITED STATES, to set apart Thursday, the eighteenth day of December next, for the solemn Thanksgiving and Praise. 5-0 out of 5 stars Such little book, so much knowledge
My mom bought this cookbook a few years ago and never ended up using it because I snatched it into my own clutches and have been using it ever since.
The only Pumpkin Pie I make is from this book, and it's so incredible that I cannot tear myself away and switch the recipe.

This is a small book, easy to follow and has a picture of everything you are making. It really takes guesswork out of what you are making and makes you more inclined to actually cook, because you have a gorgeous picture next to the recipe, a great incentive.

There is one turkey roasting recipe that I dived in and it came out perfecto on my first try. It's hard to decide how to cook it since there are soo many books, websites and shows on it. And by last minute the disgrunted cook picks out whatever recipe they see last and it might not be the best or easiest. This one is easy and simply perfect; roast turkey with butter and sage.

There are soups, sides, casseroles, desserts, salads and starters. Without being confusing and over whelming this little book has exactly what you need, no extra usless recipes that no one wants to make.

Terrific and wonderful. True treasure for your cookbook library.
