2-0 out of 5 stars Extremely simplistic and sometimes inaccurate
When I found a pretty big (!) lump in my neck earlier this year, I spent a ridiculous amount of time reading everything I could online while waiting the three weeks it took to get to see my first endocrinologist. So by the time I came to Amazon in search of The Book, I guess I was expecting something...more than I could find via a Yahoo search. With all the good ratings and reviews, I chose this title.

Ugh. This book was very disappointing first because it was SO simplistic to be nearly insulting. And second because some of the information contained in it is actually inaccurate. Worst $10 I've spent this year.

To be fair, as a first line read in your search for information about your thyroid condition - it's "okay". But don't stop here. Read everything you can. Ask questions. Arm yourself with as much information as you can and do not rely solely on your doctors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Thyroid Book!
Very up-to-date, accurate and useful info for anyone with thyroid disease.

It's written by a professional and based on medical science, clinical experience and common sense.

It's a very comprehensive book and covers Hashimoto's, Graves, and other thyroid diseases, as well as symptoms and treatments.

This is the best book I've found on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Thyroid Problems
Just the Book I needed!! Helped me decide what to do next! Thanks for the great information!

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative...but not for everyone
I recently had the pleasure of reading this book. I read this book from cover to cover. I agree with some of the past reviewers that this book had some insight. I have had thyroid disease for quite some time now, but I was already knowledgeable on the subject. I just read this book to see if I could find out anything new. While the book was a relatively easy read for me, I know that this book could be troublesome for the average reader who is not familiar with medical terminology, the endocrine system, biological mechanisms of the body, etc. The authors pride themselves on having a simplified book that everyone can read and understand. I would have to disagree with them there. Particularly with reference to the sections on the parathyroid and thyroid hormones they throw around a lot of jargon that can be very confusing to the average reader. Also in several instances, the authors give hormonal abbreviations without explaining what the hormones are first. Another big pet peeve of mine with this book was the order of it. The authors mention topics like hyper/hypothyroidism quite frequently in the first few chapters, but decide not to write about them until later in the book (Chapter 10, 11, etc.). The authors also make reference to lab tests, nuclear medicine, and radiological procedures; but do offer in depth explanations until much later in the text. They will write a few sentences about it, and say "we will discuss this more in depth later." I also found this book to be very repetitive. At least 50 pages of this book could have been eliminated from all the repetition. Also, the chapter on thyroid diet could have been eliminated altogether. In a nutshell all that chapter really says is to eat a proper diet and exercise. Who hasn't heard that by now? There was also a chapter that discussed finding a good doctor and suggested tips like find a doctor who will listen to you, and who will do what is best for you. I think that can be chalked up to having common sense. With that being said, there was some useful information in this book, such as the index of helpful websites in the back (which by the way could tell you everything that this book said and more for free). Overall, this book is an oversimplified text with jargon thrown in the middle of it, and helpful information here and there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to own
With all the irresponsible books out there on thyroid disease, it's sometimes difficult to discern which are the reputable ones and which are not.But be assured, this book is definitely reputable.

In fact, I use it to refute all the nonsense thyroid misinformation put out there by the charlatans and pseudo-experts.It's also great to use against the all-knowing, self-appointed thyroid advocates - especially what's-her-name and what's-her-name (my two favorite restless Munchauseners).

The information contained in this book is invaluable.Conveyed in a style that's fit for laypersons trying to understand thyroid disease, it's an easy read.Plus the quirky illustrations add a bit of levity.

I say just get this book, read it, keep it out to refer back to, and use it to handily put them all into their rightful places.

I too have been recently diagnosed with Graves eye disease and was left very frustrated as to what I could do to help after leaving an opthamologist's office that supposedly specialized in this. This book lists things we can do to help this condition and stop aggravating - my Dr. didn't tell me to quit using Visine among numerous things.I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for answers and ways to be proactive in their own treatment.

    Product Description
    M. Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D., bestselling author of The Thyroid Sourcebook (recommended by The New York Times), The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women and The Hypothyroid Sourcebook has just published The Thyroid Cancer Book, the only consumer book to date devoted to thyroid cancer. A thyroid cancer survivor herself, Rosenthal wrote the book she wishes she'd had when diagnosed in 1983.

The Thyroid Cancer Book explains all forms of thyroid cancer and its treatment in plain language. It was written in consultation with the leading medical experts on thyroid cancer in North America, and is the only book of its kind in the world. It includes extensive information on:

    * Significant risk factors for developing the disease, and how to find and investigate lumps in the neck
    * Papillary and follicular thyroid cancers, as well as the less common medullary and anaplastic cancers
    * Treatment options, surgery and radioactive iodine
    * Post-treatment follow up, whole body scans and Thyrogen
    * Self-healing and complementary therapies
    * The emotional impact of cancer on families and loved ones
    * Palliative care

While thyroid cancer accounts for roughly two percent of all cancers, it's among the fastest growing cancers in incidence. Its causes in North America are associated with fallout from nuclear testing in the American midwest, and environmental causes which Rosenthal also writes about in detail.

What thyroid cancer survivors are saying about The Thyroid Cancer Book:

    M. Sara Rosenthal is a sociologist and bioethicist who completed her Ph.D. at The University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics. She is author of more than 25 books and is an Associate of the University of Toronto Centre for Health Promotion, as well as Medical Ethicist for The American Foundation for Thyroid Patients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Thyroid Cancer Book
I have had Thyroid cancer and have relied on all of her Thyroid books since my surgery. I wish I had known about these books BEFORE my surgery.I would reccommend to anyone who has Thyroid Cancer.Be sure to check out the other books she has published.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I like it because it has a lot of links on the end off the book. It is informative but in some parts to long winded. I like that she can tell from her experience as a thyroid cancer survivor.
And at the end she has some alternative healing methods.
All in one a good book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date information
The book is very out of date and not organized well at all. It does not answer more than 50% of the questions I had regarding this disease.
At 186 pages (at least 1/3 was filler regarding general issues on healing and disease. . . something I could get from almost any web site on serious illness), this book is certainly not worth the expensive price. I would not recommend it at all. Visit the web sites specifically for thyroid cancer and you can educate yourself much more
thoroughly than by buying this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good solid introduction
I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2005.I bought this book almost immediately afterwards.I only had a small tumor, so this was a little bit of overkill for me, but it convinced me to have surgery so I didn't get any farther along. There isn't much out there when it comes to thyroid cancer. When I bought this book, it was the only one I could find.I would definitely recommend it if you or a family member has been diagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a basic reference for thyroid disease
This is an excellent book for basic thyroid disease information.I picked it up when I was first diagnosed and still turn to it as a reference.

I especially love it after coming to realize what the subtitle might mean."What a Harvard doctor wants you to know!" could be meant as a clever retort to all the misleading and disturbing books out there on thyroid disease. In particular, that nonsense stay-away-from one with the subtitle "What your doctor doesn't tell you...." (~ Rolling eyes).

That this doctor, or any other reputable one, would take the time to pull together thyroid disease information that can be relied upon for being accurate and safe is something to be truly grateful for.

    I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Brings nothing new to the table
Probably a very good resource for individuals beginning their research in thyroid problems, a trustworthy source, but this book provided no new information and did not address the problem of continued fatigue, immune deficiency, etc. that comes along with hypothyroid despite the fact that numbers are okay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to understand
I found this book really informative and easy to read. I usually don't write reviews but had to take exception to a previous reviewer comment. The book does say that the disease can be easily diagnosed and then goes on to say many people are not diagnosed. This is just the point, if it's easy why are they not getting diagnosed? The book goes on to say that in many cases it's because the tests are simply not run and that it is often due to the cost involved. I happen to be particularly sensitive to this point and I couldn't agree more.

If you don't have a lot of background on this topic or are not in the medical profession than I would suggest this book. It is written in plain speak and is very informative.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Rehash of the Same Old Info
Coming from Harvard, I was hoping for much more, but I found this book a disappointment.

Here's a direct quote from the introduction to the book.

"Thyroid diseases are easily diagnosed with a simple blood test and easily treated."

Just this statement alone was enough to tell me that this book is not dealing in the reality of thyroid disease. There are more than 20 million people with thyroid disease (not the 12 million the author quotes) and half of them are undiagnosed. If it's so easily diagnosed and treated, this would not be the case.

If you want more than "easy to diagnose, easy to treat" -- and let's face it, patients deserve more than that -- you're better off with any of the books by the Shameses, Mary Shomon, Elaine Moore, or Ridha Arem. ... Read more

The definitive guide for the more than twenty million Americans suffering from chronic thyroid problems or thyroid cancer

Beth Ann Ditkoff, M.D., and Paul Lo Gerfo, M.D., two leading thyroid surgeons, identify the common symptoms of thyroid disease--weight gain or loss, fatigue, nervousness, and sleeplessness--and provide advice on diagnostic tests, treatments, medications, and self-help strategies.

Every person with thyroid disease can be helped with proper diagnosis and treatment. Most thyroid problems are chronic, so patients need information to cope with a disease that will likely be with them for life. This authoritative, easy-to-use book helps them understand their conditions and gives them the knowledge they need to manage their medications and symptoms. Drs. Ditkoff and Lo Gerfo are clinicians and researchers who have successfully treated thousands of patients.

    Thyroid Facts

    • More than twenty million people currently receive treatment for thyroid problems

    • An estimated two million people have an undiagnosed thyroid condition

    • At least 10 percent of women over the age of sixty will show evidence of underactive thyroid

    • In women of childbearing age, thyroid dysfunction can cause menstrual problems, infertility, and miscarriage

    • An underactive thyroid can cause sexual dysfunction

    • Eight percent of pregnant women develop thyroid disease, which is often misdiagnosed as postpartum depression

    • The majority of thyroid disease affects women

    Amazon.com Review
Thyroid diseases are extremely common--but they often goundetected because symptoms are subtle and develop slowly, diagnosiscan be tricky, and thyroid diseases can mimic so many other disorders(after all, sudden weight changes, fatigue, nervousness, andsleeplessness are symptoms associated with dozens of other healthdisorders, including psychological problems such as depression).

This empathetic reference from two leading members of The ThyroidCenter--a multidisciplinary group of doctors at The ColumbiaPresbyterian Medical Center in New York City who have treatedthousands of thyroid patients--gives you all the facts you need tounderstand this important gland and its functions, recognize troublesigns, and get proper treatment. The book is especiallyreader-friendly because many sections are written in aquestion-and-answer style and it's sprinkled with case studies aboutreal-life people who have thyroid disease but went undiagnosed ormisdiagnosed.

The book starts off with a chapter on how to find agood thyroid doctor--usually an internist, family practitioner, orendocrinologist with expertise in this area--with whom you'll feelcomfortable over the long term (since thyroid disorders tend to needlifelong surveillance and treatment). It then covers the various typesof thyroid disease: the underactive and overactive thyroid gland, thyroid nodules (usually benign lumps), cancer, and thyroid disorderscommon to children, and those that appear during and afterpregnancy. The authors also describe tests used to diagnose thyroiddisease and the latest surgical, pharmacological, and nutritionaltechniques for treating it. --Nancy Monson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent layperson's manual
What I liked most about this book is that you don't have to be a surgeon to get value from it.For myself, I knew nothing about thyroid disease, other than to say that a very good friend of mine has recently beendiagnosed with a kind of hyperthyroidism.I purchased The Thyroid Guidethrough Amazon.com because I was hoping to learn more about my friend'sdisease and maybe pass it on to her to provide her with some peace of mind. I am glad I purchased this book. The Thyroid Guide is an excellent sourceof information about all types of diseases affecting the thyroid. And, theinformation is presented in an easily accessible, unintimidating, readableway.Ditkoff and LoGerfo understand that it's not surgeons who need toread this book.So they have taken great pains to keep the technical stuffto a minimum. They have focussed on symptoms, choosing physicians, procedures, medications - the kind of information the layperson shouldknow.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just about the Surgery
I was surprised when I got the book, because the listing says that thebook is 272 pages but it's really more like 170 pages, and doesn'thave much useful detail. The authors are apparently thyroid surgeons, and so they spend most of the book talking about thyroid surgery, and the conditions that can lead to thryroid surgery like hyperthyroidism, thyroid lumps and thyroid cancer. As someone who is hypothyroid, I was looking for more information than book's statement that "an underactive thyroid is easy to treat." They say this several times in the book, and the fact that they keep repeating this when it sure hasn't been true for me makes me think that they don't have a particular handle on what is involved in being hypothyroid after the surgery. Also, the cover talks about nutrition and self-care, but the nutrition chapter is only about 3 pages, and all it really talks about is iodine. These doctors also must not believe in alternative medicine because their section on it is 3 sentences that say that it doesn't really help anything, except maybe things like "insomnia or nervousness." This book might be good for someone who was going to have thyroid surgery, but this book didn't have much to offer for me, since I've had the surgery already, and am now dealing with being hypothyroid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide to Thyroid
As an idividual familiar with the field, I think The Thyroid Guide is a must read for anyone faced with thyroid disease or thyroid surgery. Many people are hesitant to confront health issues that may be related to thethyroid, but this guide walks you through the steps from diagnosis totreatment. It contains all the questions a patient should ask his/herphysician.It explores the different techniques used in dealing withthyroid surgery in an unbiased manner.

I feel that these two surgeonshave dealt with all the issues facing patients dealing with thyroid cancer, disease, and surgery fully in writing this book.

    Product Description
Thyroid health and psychological health are often linked in ways of which many people are not aware. As a person develops a thyroid condition, he or she often becomes depressed. This depression can lead to more problems with the thyroid which, in turn, lead to further depression—a vicious cycle that is difficult to treat unless the problem is addressed on several levels.

This book offers an overview of what the medical community knows about dysfunctional thyroid. You’ll receive an introduction to thyroid disorders, what the thyroid hormone does, and how it functions in relation to their psychological well-being. Of particular concern, they learn, is hypothyroidism, the name for a lower-than-normal production of thyroid hormone that most often leads to depression. The book proposes a number of diet and lifestyle changes you can experiment with in addition to conventional medical treatment to try to correct a thyroid condition, as well as cognitive techniques for overcoming depression. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent series!
I am a cytology fellow and have the 5 books available in this series. They are all excellent; I highly recommend them.Concise, great images, to the point and practical. The thyroid book has excellent diagnostic algorithms and discussion of differential diagnoses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice..
This is a nice little monograph....The photographs are quite good, and the text is clear. She has a few very useful algorithms. Fairly expensive for just thyroid cytopath book (for ~$150 you can get a good general cytopath text like Atkinson or Renshaw), but the quality is good.

    I am a pathologist.
Ordinally days, I have had difficulty to make a diagnosis of thyroid FNA slides. But when I read this book, I got so many informations, which are very useful to routine thyroid FNA diagnosis work. I am happy now.

One thing to wish is a little more details, And then it would be a more powerful guide book to pathologists or cytopathologists, and even training residents.

One more thing I want to get is Breast cytopathology (Essentials in cytopathology, one of serials) as soon as possible.

Please let me know, when you make the breast one. Thanks a lot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book and very prompt service
This book had a lot of good and accurate information. Service from Amazon was also outstanding. I continue to have good experiences with Amazon and my choices of books I purchase from them. Book arrived in half the time they estimated, which was good becasue I think they way overestimate standard delivery times.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure quackery - worse than snake oil
This book is a repository of a litany of scares and pure quackery, much of which has been debunked by research and clinical trials decades ago. Autoimmune diseases cannot be treated by any of its bizarre misrepresentations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A holistic and clear approach to autoimmune disease
This is an excellent book if you want to try to find ways of helping yourself overcome autoimmune diseases without just taking suppressive drugs from your doctor. Edelson explains very clearly the immune process, what happens when T Cells start attacking you rather than fighting for you, exactly what 'free radicals' are and why they are so important, and most importantly, he suggests that in addition to the genetic factor, much autoimmune disease is called by environmental toxins and in particular mercury from dental work. This book is the first one I have found that has given me answers and suggestions about how to work with and overcome an autoimmune disorder.I am deeply grateful.

1-0 out of 5 stars A bad, BAD idea...
I would be dead if I followed this author's suggestions.I've been diagnosed with a very rare autoimmune disorder that causes life-threatening allergic reactions. One of my triggers is heat.I used to love the sauna, but I would have to be CRAZY to visit one again.Sure... I eat a healthy (organic) diet, minimize my exposure to chemicals and heavy metals, get plenty of sleep... but I also avoid my triggers and I'm faithful about taking the medications my doctors have prescribed. This is how I stay out of the ER.One size does not fit all.

Educating yourself is extremely important if you think you have an autoimmune disorder.BUT... this book is not the way to do it.Run the other way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on where to start your healing journey
I started reading this about 2 years after I had already worked with a doctor who helped me become symptom-free of my RA. I have done probably half of the recommendations in the book through my doctor & I am comfortable with where I am at. I will hold it for reference if I start to regress.

This book is very comprehensive. It can be overwhelming for someone who has been eating fast foods or boxed processed foods & who has only been to a conventional doctor who writes Rx's all day. Not to discount any of the info in the book -- it is all great. But I believe people have to want to truly heal & get out of the mentality that "there is a pill for every ill." You have to take control of your own health.

The author explains the common issues behind autoimmune disorders & how to work through the symptoms. I know I couldn't have recovered by myself, I did it with the help of an out of state doctor, Dr. Richard Brouse.

The author promotes his wellness center, which I think is fine. It's a starting place. But there may be adequate local doctors that can help. The author provides a list of questions to ask them when interviewing them for treating you.

Overall, very good reference book. Just try not to get overwhelmed with all of the protocol recommendations. [...] & [...] are good starting points as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars also a patient of Dr. Rubenfeld
Good overview of thyroid functioning. Dr. Rubenfeld is my endocrinologist and he knows the thyroid.

Dr. Arem's book on the thyroid is also helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A model for all physicians, needed answers & increased health awareness!
Dr. Rubenfeld is the most engaging and thorough medical professional we have met.Not only is he an extremely knowledgeable and skilled physician, he has a true gift for patient care and has authored a great resource for patients and patients' familes. His book not only contains invaluable medical information, it is comprehendable and interesting. It's a resource that you need, especially if you or someone close to you have endocrine-related symptoms. This book also makes a terrific gift for anyone because of its broad application to good health awareness.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of medication bias
I am excited that more physicians, like Dr. Rubenfeld, are really thoroughly exploring the epidemic of thyroid disease we have in this country. There is a great need!! The downside is that Dr. Rubenfeld is an advocate of synthetic medications (such as Synthroid). As someone who has suffered with Hashimoto's for years and and who has researched many medications, treatments and physicians, I have finally gotten relief from the majority of my symptoms by using Armour (the natural option). Unfortunately, for the thousands of women (especially) who are suffering with thyroid symptoms, these synthetic medications only make them feel worse by the day. Armour is much more effective in relieving the countless (torturous) symptoms.I would highly recommend "Stop the Thyroid Madness" for a more accurate picture of what those with thyroid disease actually go through and what tests they actually need for the best diagnosis and treatment plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive yet understandable
This is an incredibly helpful book that can be read cover to cover or used from time to time as a reference. It is written in "regular" language without compromising the information and without being too pedantic or condescending. The book remains technical where necessary. The addition of people's stories personalizes each topic and provides a point of reference for comparing your own symptoms.Pictures of celebreties who have experienced problems with their thyroid gives you a sense of "belonging" and let's you know that you aren't the only one with this problem, which can be very comforting. Finally, all proceeds of the sale of the book are donated to the American Thyroid Association for research & education.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference Book
This book is well-written.It is simple to understand, yet packed with useful information.I refer to this book whenever I have a question regarding my thyroid health. My endocrinologist refers to this book as well.I give this book to woman with health questions, so that they may consider their next medical option. ... Product Description

An outstanding reference for performing successful thyroid operations

Atlas of Thyroid Surgery: Principles, Practice, and Clinical Cases is a concise guide for the surgical management of thyroid disease. Divided in three main parts, the book opens with an overview of surgical anatomy and surgical techniques. The author provides a detailed description of the technique of capsular dissection as well as surgical cases that aid in the comprehension of important concepts. The book then features an in-depth discussion of thyroid nodules, including follicular neoplasms and nodules in Graves and Hashimoto disease, covering basic science, genetics, clinical aspects, imaging, diagnosis, and surgical strategies. In the final part, the atlas addresses the management of malignant tumors, including papillary, anaplastic, and medullary carcinoma, and describes the principles of classification, treatment strategies along with current therapeutic controversies, and results. For differentiated thyroid carcinoma, contemporary strategies focus on selective risk-dependent treatment that allows for the protection of patients from overtreatment.

    Highlights:

    - Descriptions of endocrine pathophysiology and the pathogenesis of nodular goiter and thyroid neoplasms

    - Thorough discussion of the capsular dissection technique and its essential advantages as a minimally invasive approach with low morbidity

    - Numerous clinical cases with step-by-step demonstrations of surgical procedures and concise comments on management, helping clinicians prepare for range of scenarios encountered in everyday practice

    - 120 clear line drawings and full-color photographs that illustrate key concepts

    - Surgical videos on an accompanying DVD present detailed surgical technique in five clinical cases with cross references to the text

Atlas of Thyroid Surgery: Principles, Practice, and Clinical Cases is a superb guide for general surgeons and endocrine and ENT surgeons operating on the thyroid. Endocrinologists, oncologists, pathologists, and residents in these specialties will also greatly benefit from the wealth of information provided in the text.

Ernst Gemsenjaeger, MD, is Professor Emeritus, Surgical Clinic, Zollikerberg Hospital, Zollikerberg/Zurich, Switzerland.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know how your body works...
A life-changing book- I'm now on Armour Thyroid. Lost 5 pounds in two weeks, then it stopped. I know I need the cortisol to supplement my health, but have to wait til I can afford it. Absolutely recomment this book to anyone who wants to know how your body works, and why the Synthroid just doesn't do it!

    5-0 out of 5 stars 30 years.....
I'm in my mid 40s now.I went undiagnosed and untreated for over 30 years. You see, I had a violent attack when I was 9 years old, thumbs were dug into my thyroid gland while the person tried to choke me out.The next day, I had a thyroid storm. My temp spiked up to 105.8, I was given alcohol baths and ice baths. No one bothered to check the thyroid.

When I was 16, I spent a considerable amount of time at the library researching my symptoms and figured out that it must be my thyroid.I put my life in the hands of my doctor and asked him to test my thyroid only to have him laugh at me.He would be the first in nearly a dozen doctors that I would ask to test my thyroid who would all ultimately NOT test my thyroid. My health declined consistently - I went through the pregnancies with both my children undiagnosed and untreated.I'm so grateful they turned out as well as they have.

I was finally diagnosed 5 years ago and put on synthetic T4 only. What a joke!My brain fog didn't go away, my health status didn't improve. Then, yet another doctor I had entrusted my life to gave me a drug that nearly killed me.Not kidding!I started researching again. If I couldn't buy a certain book, I would make copies of relevant pages - so that I could refer to them as I moved along.I finally convinced a doc (had to practically beg) to give me T4 + T3 and that was a dramatic improvement.I started functioning better and was able to think clearly again for the first time in so many years.

Then I read Janie's book.I learned some things and tried some things.I felt EVEN BETTER.Then I read Janie's book again and learned more and tried more. For the first time in a LONG, LONG time, I feel like I'm on the right track and I feel so much BETTER than I have in SO LONG.I feel as though my life is in MY hands, not some arbitrary person who thinks they're a god.I'm keeping it that way.

    Thank you, Janie.Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent research
This book is very well researched. The author has worked with many people who have had thyroid problems, and gives examples of many situations which may arise and how to overcome them. She gives examples of tests you can do at home, as well as tests that you can have done by your doctor. She advocates working with your doctor, although you may have to changes doctors to find one that is amenable to using patient symptoms as opposed to the old TSH standard.

As to the one person who overdosed. That can always happen as people always seem to want a quick fix. The author cautions against over doing it and states that there is no quick fix. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Anyone Battling Hypothyroidism
This book is everything I was hoping it would be and more.I am hypothyroid and have spent years searching for answers to lingering questions about my condition. Why weren't my symptoms improving. Why as each year went by was I feeling worse.

After discovering STTM website and reading it over and over again, I knew I wanted the book.It has become a great reference tool, and constant companion in my struggle to be treated effectively for hypothyroid. I wish I could buy a copy for all of my hypo friends!!!

Thank you Janie for writing this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I just started reading this book and so far I think it provides a lot of interesting information in order to empower the patient. I think it teaches the reader to actually look at all sides and despite what they are 'told' by doctors, or that they are considered 'normal' on a blood test - if they don't feel their best then they need to look at alternative solutions! I will gladly add this to my library! ... Read more

If you suffer low thyroid--or think you might--and want to learn more, especially if you're unsatisfied with the answers you're getting from your doctor, this book is for you. An estimated 5.8% of women and 3.4% of men in the United States are hypothyroid. Low thyroid is common, yet, paradoxically, may be rampantly overlooked. Why? As you'll discover in "The Thyroid Paradox," there is a pervasive oversimplification of thyroid science and mainstream treatment of thyroid patients today. Current thyroid testing has weaknesses and should be interpreted, not in a vacuum, but as part of a diagnostic process based on all the evidence. Too often, doctors simply stick to test results and miss patients suffering with subtle hypothroidism. The "Thyroid Paradox" is for the person who's been told "It's not your thyroid," without then being told convincingly what it is. Maybe you've been told nothing is wrong but know there must be some reson for your chronic fatigue, body aches, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, "brain fog," depression, or menstrual irregularity. This book provides the answers for you. You'll learn about:* The loopholes in current thyroid testig*Hidden forms of hypothyroidism and how to detect them*The best strategies for thyroid replacementThe path out of the thyroid paradox is engaged teamwork involving both doctor and patient. This book should provide you with knowledge you need to communcate and work with your doctor to get the treatment you deserve. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and read this book!
I highly recommend Dr. Rone's excellent book to all who are suffering with thyroid issues. I have suffered with hypothyroidism for some time and have had great difficulty finding a knowlegeable practitioner to assist me with treatment. It is clear that Dr. Rone is such a practitioner...a doctor who is passionate about learning all he can about the thyroid and using his knowledge to help people sort out these complex issues.Dr. Rone covers the myriad of treatment options for hypothyroidism. While its clear that he favors treatment with synthetic medications, he is also familiar with the "reformist" school which advocates treatment with dessicated thyroid and gives a fair minded analysis of this approach.Dr. Rone concedes that hypothyroidism is probably far more common than most will admit and he beleives that doctors should err on the side of treatment in many cases. There are a number of websites that purport to provide guidance to those seeking treatment for hypothyrodism.I myself was following some of the protocols advocated on these sites. After reading Dr. Rone's book I realized that much of what I read on the internet was grossly oversimplified.Dr. Rone's book can be challenging to read ...but that is because the material is very complex to begin with. Anyone relying on websites for treatment should buy and read Dr. Rone's book today so they can at least be apprised of the risks they are undertaking from self treatment.Unlike most conventionally trained phyicians, Dr. Rone is not afraid to admit that he does not have all the answers. He is a cautious physician who beleives that you should first and foremost "do no harm". I stupidly followed some internet advice that said thyroid blood tests are too sensitive and that most people need to take 3-5 grains of thyroid to get well.I promptly overdosed on thyroid. For the mere price of $14, you can get the collected wisdom of a practioner with many years of experience on the frontlines of thyroid treatment. I only wish I lived closer to Dr. Rone so that I could consult with him personally on my case.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag
This book is a mixed bag.Dr. Rone is a practicing endocrinologist, but he's a member of the American Thyroid Association. If you haven't read it elsewhere, it's a professional organization that gets about 1/2 of its grant funding from Abbott Labs, maker of Synthroid. Dr. Rone tries to please both camps in the Thyroid world - he adamantly states he believes that T4 supplementation is perfectly OK for most thyroid patients, while at the same time hemming and hawing that certainly mixed therapy with Armour and other natural thyroid hormones seems like it would be helpful for many patients. He doesn't define "many," so it's not clear whether taking the book with you to the doctor's office would be helpful.Still, he probably risked his reputation with the American Thyroid Association going as far as he did.

His condescending attitude toward patients made me glad I'm not from Tennessee, though. There are certainly better books out there for your own knowledge, but it's worth buying if you need to show your doctor something from an endocrinologist.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better thyroid books I've read
And let me start by saying that I've read many.Note: This book specifically covers hypothyroidism. If you have hyperthyroidism, you might find this book useful in some ways, but it was not be written specifically for that spectrum of the disease.

Dr. Rone is a uniquely qualified author for this book for many reasons:

    1) He is a board certified endocrinologist.
    2) He has done a lot of specialized work with the thyroid.
    3) He has hypothyroidism, so he understand what it is like to live with the disease.
    4) He has been told by doctors that his thyroid numbers were fine and that his problems couldn't be thyroid related.

Most of us who have suffered with thyroid disease clearly understand how difficult it is to get a doctor to listen to us when we tell them our symptoms and how we think our symptoms are caused by our thyroid. Many have been told, "it's not your thyroid. Your numbers are normal."Unfortunately, the doctors then rarely help us figure out what the problem is, so we go through life, sometimes for years, feeling miserable, and not knowing what the problem is.Dr. Rone explains the problem of modern medicine's approach to diagnostics (looking only at blood work) vs. the approach used by doctors before blood tests were available (signs and symptoms). He recommends that doctors should be using a mixture of both the modern and the old, so as to not miss patients whose numbers might not be that high, but whose symptoms are off the charts.

Dr. Rone does an excellent job of describing medical terms in a way that the average reader will be able to understand. In the book, he explains:
1)the different types of thyroid disease
2)the different tests available to monitor for it
    3)the shortcomings of those tests
    4)the interpretation of those tests
5)the symptoms (and how the non-specificness of the symptoms works against us in getting diagnosed)
6)the history of thyroid disease, tests, treatments, and studies
    7)the different treatment options available
8)where and how the medical community has failed to diagnose many (up to half) people with thyroid disease
9)the description and results of several studies done on thyroid disease through the years

Overall, I think this book is very good. I didn't give it 5 stars because I think he does do a disservice to some of the natural alternatives available. He states that Synthroid and other synthetic T4 drugs are just as good for treating thyroid disease as Armour and other natural dessicated thyroid drugs. While he certainly doesn't have the bias against Armour that most doctors and pharmacists do, I believe he (like most doctors) takes all his information on the drugs from the studies done by Big Pharma. The problem that I personally have with this approach is that I have read hundreds of stories (and know of thousands more) from women and men who have not been helped at all by synthetic T4 drugs, and even did poorly when placed on a combination of T4/T3 synthetics. Their stories aren't a double blind study, funded by a pharmaceutical company, so to a medical professional (especially a mainstream medical profession), these stories are invalid as evidence. But beyond not taking them into account, he goes on to renounce their stories by stating that the only reason they feel better on Armour vs. the synthetics is because they are getting too much T3, and this creates an upper effect. And on top of that, he states that the trace chemicals (T2, T1, and Calcitonin) found in Armour don't really do any good, even though he admits that no double blind studies have been done to prove or disprove this point. In one sentence, he implies that nothing should be assumed to be true without a scientific study, but in the next, he is making his own assumptions as to why a medicine is working better for some people than the synthetic version.

In conclusion, I do think that Dr. Rone has a very good grasp on thyroid disease. He has written a lot about his own experiences in dealing with thyroid disease, as well as what he has learned through the years in his personal clinic. He is certainly moving in the right direction. If you suspect that you have thyroid disease, I would recommend you read this book. It will give you a clear understanding of what hypothyroidism is and why the medical community seems to be so confused about it. Then head over to Mary Shomon's site ([...]), [...], and to Stop The Thyroid Madness ([...]) to read some of the stories of those who struggled against the medical community.

Lastly, don't assume your doctor knows everything. Only you know your body and your symptoms. If your doctor isn't working with you to find out why you are having your symptoms (and note that depression is a symptom of thyroid disease, because many doctors will just slap the "you're depressed" label on you and hand you a prescription for an antidepressant), then find a new doctor. And keep finding new doctors until you find one that will be willing to work with you and help you solve your problems.
