5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about Thyroid.
Braverman's grand work is almost the standard against which all other thyroid texts are compared. While not as comprehensive as the 6th edition, the eighth edition manages to cover the essentials of Thyroidology today. While some of the authors still seem to subscribe to the false god of TSH, instead of taking a good history and using good clinical acumen; this work does cover the state of Thyroidology as it exists today. Definitely an excellent reference for anyone working in the field, and a good place to begin a better understanding of the Thyroid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thyroid Problems in Women and Children by Joan Gomez
This is a good purchase. It will help to identify strategies
aimed at keeping the thyroid healthy and intact. The use of
clean water, dairy, lean meat, fish (iodine content) are
important in maintaining overall thyroid health into the future.
Chronic overeating, eating too little and feeling cold all the
time are classic events which aggravate the thyroid and lead
to intractable problems. In addition, the book advises to
use salt sparingly and to stop using red food dyes.
Underactive thyroid inducers are cabbage, peanuts, mustard seed,
sweet corn, soy and milk from cows. Certain medicinal
preparations induce thyroid strain; namely, heparin,
diazepam, beta blockers, aspirin , steroids and sulfonamides.
Breathing problems may be aggravated by an over-active thyroid.
Stress, trauma, surgery, burns, radiation, bereavement and
personal illness-all place added burdens on the thyroid.
This book is a worthy purchase for consumers interested
in maintaining thyroid health. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated book
Don't bother with this book....The info is not up-to-date.I bought it used and cheap, and it still wasn't worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and easy to read
This book has helped me to understand the different types of thyroid diseases better.I'm very glad that it also lay out the risks of certain surgery that some doctors do not highlight. It is written in a manner that is easy to read and not heavy as compare to scientific books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
This is a really go book for anyone who doesn't know anything about thyroid conditions/diseases.I have had some experience with thyroid problems in the past so a lot of the information contained in the book was not new to me.The best part about the book is that you get detailed information without all the medical jargon. The author is very clear and descriptive about the different types of thyroid conditions, symptoms, common medical treatments, etc.I purchased it because I was hoping for more information on weight management and diet for tyroid patients.Although the book touches on this topic it was not as detailed as I would have liked.Otherwise, I would recommend this book as a guide to walk you through the maze of medical terms and to sort out some of the fact from fiction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here
Why did McGraw-Hill publish this book?It is almost identical (verbatim) to The Complete Thyroid Book except that the latter book includes some additional information. Both books were published in 2005.

I agree with the reviewers that mention how basic this book is.If you're new to learning about thyroid conditions and their treatment, The Complete Thyroid Book is a good starting point.Otherwise check out this book or The Complete Thyroid Book from the library and maybe you'll discover a few helpful tidbits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Informative
I bought this book after a tough year of thyroid ups and downs. It has empowered me to understand and ask the right questions for a change. So informative but on a level that anyone can understand. After reading my copy, I bought one for my sister, who also has thyroid problems. Her mother-in-law saw it and bought two more copies for friends. Its great for family members of hyper-hypo- thyroid too. It will increase thier understaning. I bought a few books and this was the best, by far! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great thyroid text
This book is dense with anything you could possibly want to know about the topic of thyroid cytopath. As an atlas, the images are numerous, and their quality is good to very good. Some images are a little small, but it doesn't really detract from their utility. Lots of tables as well. There seem to be a number of very nice cytopath texts out there (Sidawy, Atkinson, Clark/Faquin, and even Renshaw), but this one is probably the best for this one specific topic. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Thyroid function tests are performed by essentially all medical practitioners across every clinical setting. Significant insights have been gained into thyroid regulation and thyroid hormone metabolism that influence the selection and interpretation of thyroid function tests. The first section of the book presents the recent advances in thyroid physiology and a discussion of genetic influences on thyroid function tests. The population variation in the TSH "set point", now thought to be genetically determined, influences the evaluation of thyroid function and thyroid function "targets" for treatment of thyroid disease. The basics of thyroid function measurements, approaches, limitations, and clinical applications will be described for the major categories of thyroid function tests. Application of thyroid function testing to the key clinical settings are discussed, including in the management of thyroid diseases. The influences of drugs on thyroid function testing remains a major clinical issue and is covered in a separate chapter and the issue of thyroid function test screening is also discussed. The authors represent leaders in research and thyroid clinical practice as well as representing a variety of outstanding institutions. Product Description

Atlas of Thyroid Lesions provides a broad overview of the variety of lesions in the thyroid gland and their different characteristics and features, in the unique combination of ultrasound, cytologic and histologic appearance.

Nodules in the thyroid gland are quite common. Studies estimate that more than 70% of the adult population in the United States has thyroid lesions when examined by ultrasound. More than 80% of thyroid nodules are benign. Too many benign nodules are surgically resected due to insufficient diagnostics, and too many malignant tumors do not get adequate primary surgical treatment. This book demonstrates how multidisciplinary approaches can increase the quality of the complex thyroid diagnoses and thereby secure correct treatment.

This atlas presents:

•Comprehensive description and overview of all thyroid lesions, tumor types, nodules and neck lymph node metastases

•High quality ultrasound and pathology images

•Easy to find images of anticipated tumor types

•Didactic tools for how to improve diagnostic accuracy in the field

This is a great little book with a good amount of information packed in.It will definitely give you some background knowledge and point you in the right direction if you are having thyroid issues. If your thyroid problem comes from Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune disorder, I would also reccomend Dr. Colbert's Bible Cure book on autoimmune disease...an excellent companion book (which also goes into other autoimmune issues such as lupus, etc.). If you do not know if you have Hashimoto's, your doctor can check your antibody levels....it is worth checking as this is one of the main causes of hypothyroidism.Generally doctors do not treat this but the bible cure book on autoimmune diseases can give you some advice on natural things you can do to help your system. ... Hypothyroidism is the medical term for an under-active thyroid gland. Hypothyroid disorders account for about 80% of thyroid disease cases, with the other 20% being hyperthyroid disorders (overactive thyroid). In this book, I address the subjects of symptoms, diagnosis and treatments for hypothyroidism. Also included, is my personal story about developing hypothyroidism, caused by the condition of thyroid autoimmunity called "Hashimoto's thyroiditis". Due to some difficulties I experienced in having proper testing ordered for my thyroid disorder and afterward being properly treated for it, I became "proactive" in my health care, which I recommend to other patients. I was extremely let down by the "book". It seems more of a collection of `copy and paste' information found on Google. The only information I found relevant to hair-care was the use of Primrose Oil. Very, very disappointed....

..Just like the other reviewer said: nothing new in this book that isnt discussed on her site.Save your $$$.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my Aunt
The book is warmly written, factual and helpful.
