Product Description
Ernst Leumann (1859-1931), professor in Strasbourg, was one of the most distinguished scholars of his time in Indology, especially renowned for his work in Jaina studies. The papers left by him fill roughly 550 notebooks. The majority of them contain still unpublished transcriptions of Jaina manuscripts which deal mainly with the Jaina narrative literature. A wealth of analytical material concerning Indian literature in general and various Indian languages is also to be found in Leumann's work. The present catalogue presents for the first time a complete list of the material, and is supplemented with notes as to the contents of the notebooks and with various indices. "A Bibliography of Studies Connected With the Avasyaka-Commentaries" by Klaus Bruhn has been added as an appendix. (Franz Steiner 1998) ... Read more

Excerpt: The use of historical money in Tibet started in ancient times, when Tibet had no coined currency of its own. Bartering was common, gold was a medium of exchange, and shell money and stone beads were used for very small purchases. A few coins from other countries were also occasionally in use. Coins were first used in a more extensive way in the 17th century: these were silver coins supplied by Nepal. There were however various difficulties with this system. In 1763/64 and 1785 the first silver coins were struck in Tibet. In 1792 the first mass-produced silver coins were created under joint Chinese and Tibetan authority. Coins bearing Tibetan inscriptions only were subsequently replaced by issues which had Chinese and Tibetan legends. This lasted until the 1830s. In 1840 purely Tibetan coinage was struck under Tibetan authority, and this coinage continued being made until 1954, with only two short interruptions when Sino-Tibetan coins were issued. In 1910 the Tibetan Government started producing a large range of copper and silver coins of different denominations, and in 1918 to 1921, gold coins were struck. Tibetan banknotes were first issued in 1913. From 1955 to 1959 no more Tibetan coins were created, although banknotes were still being printed, and by 1959 all of the money was gradually being replaced with Chinese currency. Product Description
This book discusses the emergence of democracy's modernizing force in an exiled community with a political history based on a feudal theocracy. Since his exile almost forty years ago, the Dalai Lama and his government-in-exile have steered this fledgling democratic community toward the fulfillment of his dream of converting a theocracy to a democracy. The establishment of a tripartite government with separate powers and the development of a framework for a future democratic polity-if and when Tibetans regain their land-is a testament to the ongoing democratizing revolution. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Seven Years in Tibet
It's a great book.
The state in which I got it delivered, was just like it was described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the film.
Absolutely wonderful book filled with gorgeous photographs and enlightening text about making the award-winning film. Great insight into the mind of director Jean-Jacques Annaud. Incredible story reveals the difficult task of transforming a difficult tale into a great film. Even if you do not have interest in the film you should buy this book to learn how great films are made. And, how great actors take risks. Kudos to Brad Pitt for seeking difficult roles. Buy this book. You will be glad that you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done
This pictorial book was to coincide with the release of the epic movie based on the classic memoir of Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer. The book contains scripts, location stills of Tibet, and hundreds of photo stills from the making and the movie itself.Knowing that due to the Chinese opposition parts of the scenes from the movie were actually shot in South America, I was somehow disappointed. But the pictorial still adds grciously to my Tibet collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars English and impact of the words are very strong.
The book is very....real.The author described everything in great detail.Brad Pitt's character was also very realistic in how the author projected him. Also has many cool facts on Tibet(customs ang religion),themany characters had very interesting personalities.Brad Pitt's characterhad alot of character, the way the author projected.Good book.Read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The English translation is much better than the movie.
I found Richard Graves English translation to be excellent. One can almost feel the cold nights and the pain of Harrer's trek up from India to Lhasa. His appreciation of the customs and desire to learn from them is something much needed today as Americans try to understand Tibet. This is a good book to begin with in gaining background. He is not a theologian or historian but gives a much needed glimpse of Tibet fifty years ago. Knowing the past makes the future brighter. ... Read more
