5-0 out of 5 stars A first rate insight into Shipwrecks & Archaeology.
From the ships of Homer's Greece right up to the rediscovery of the Titanic, Peter Throckmorton was able to explain underwater archaeology in an interesting and readable way - even for those who feel the content of any book on such a subject would be right over their head.

This man knew his subject, taught that subject and, sadly, lost his life investigating that subject. Thankfully, he has left us all with a quality book in which this somewhat awkward subject is explained for all to enjoy.

This is a large coffee-table book of 240 pages packed with information. The photographs - both ancient and modern, and the graphics are of the highest standard and there is no diver on earth who will not learn something from within these pages.

Altogether a truly excellent product.

Product Description
The most awesome ocean-going vessel the world had ever seen, the mightly TITANIC struck an iceberg and sank on the night of April 14, 1912, carrying more than 1500 souls--and uncountable secrets--to the icy bottom of the mid-Atlantic. Why did the crew steam full speed ahead into dangerous waters despite six wireless warnings? How able was the doomed behemoth.s .superb seaman. Captain Smith? Why did the nearby ship Californian ignore Titanic.s distress signals? How could such a disaster ever have occurred?

Author Walter Lord.s acclaimed classic A Night to Remember is considered the definitive written work on the TITANIC tragedy. And now he returns to the scene of chaos and horror to explore--and answer--the untold mysteries behind the twentieth century.s greatest catastrophe at sea.Amazon.com Review
You might say that Walter Lord provoked the whole Titanicmania by interviewing dozens of survivors and fashioning theirreminiscences into the classic non-fiction novel A Night toRemember, which was made into a 1958 film that heavilyinfluenced James Cameron's 1998 epic. Some of the dialogue is morevivid than the 1998 film--when a kid sees the deadly iceberg, he saysexcitedly, "Oh, Muddie, look at the beautiful North Pole with noSanta Claus on it."

But much has been discovered since Lord's original book madewaves--such as the shipwreck itself, and a wealth of scientificinquiry. So he wrote this semisequel, which tackles each of theremaining mysteries about the unnecessary calamity in a methodical, but quite readable, fashion. How come the wireless operators blew itso fatally? Maybe they would have had better operators if they paidthem more than $5 a week--as Lord notes, it would have taken awireless operator 18 years to earn one transatlantic ticket. How comethe Californian just sat there in nearby waters and neglected to saveanyone on the frantically signaling and flare-firing Titanic? Lordquotes a man on the nonsinking ship admitting to "a certainamount of slackness," which he uses for a sardonic chaptertitle.

Some of the characters are more sympathetic, such as Renee Harris, whoused the money she won suing the Titanic owners for her husband'sdeath to bankroll neophyte playwright Moss Hart's first show. Lordsays that Hart's memoir, Act One, depictsHarris reacting to an opening-night flop with optimism. After you'vesurvived the Titanic, what's to worry?

Walter Lord has gotten better reviews, and he needn't fret about hisreputation. The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Barbara Tuchman, author of A DistantMirror, had this reaction to Night Lives On:"Stunning ... his detection and discoveries make a first-classhistorical reconstruction and a model in the research and writing ofthat difficult art." --Tim Appelo ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of service and condition
This book was shipped quickly and received in just a few days. The condition of the book is perfect, absolutely no flaws or defects. I highly recommend this seller to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, about a great tragedy
The Night Lives On by Walter Lord

I bumped into my copy of the book in a library give away rack. Take a book, make a donation. I rarely read anything over 2 nights, but I did read this one in 2 nights. I have not read the Lord's first book "A Night to Remember." Like everyone in the country I had seen the "Titanic" movie, watched specials on the tragic boats discovery, and knew a few facts about this tragic event. This book has lots of neat facts and facts on debatable issues of the great tragedy. The writer organizes the work along the lines of the production of the ship. He addresses the hugeness of the ship and the way that may have caused her captain to not know how to handle her. He then simply recounts the awful night the Titanic sank. He then goes on to speak to many of the issues that that the sinking brought up. While going through each issue he lines them up from the sinking to the present discovery. He allows his readers to decide from evidence many of the issues for him or herself. He covers the heroic action of the Carpathia. He discusses in detail the details of the California's apparent refusal to acknowledge the nearby distress rockets fired by the Titanic. He discusses the legal suits by many involved. He even brings up details about the famous band and what they played and how long they played. He does some wonderful writing on the whole number of lifeboats. He just delves into a whole lots of issues that will never be totally settled. As an armchair historian, I wish I could write a book as succint but detailed as this. End result: I will submit this review and look for the first book.SWT

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read!
I found this book to be very enjoyable and I especially enjoyed the different themed chapters that addressed different parts of the saga.I actually enjoyed this book more than "A Night To Remember".

5-0 out of 5 stars Questions finally meet their answers
Being a fan of Walter Lord's impeccably researched book "A Night to Remember," I was instantly intrigued upon learning of "The Night Lives On." I had had several lingering questions for years: why was an order given to turn the ship starboard when the iceberg eventually hit starboard? How, specifically, was the matter of the Californian's involvement dealt with? Which theories about "the gash" don't pan out? All of my questions and more were painstakingly answered as if I had asked Mr. Lord for an explanation myself. His ingenius weaving of history, statistics, personal testimonies, and logic, blended into an easily understandable format, made my love of the Titanic's story grow even more. Anyone can buy one book and know the generalities of the ship. But this book goes above and beyond to educate those already acquainted with the story and wanting a much more in-depth look.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mysteries explained about the Titanic.
Walter Lord follows up his best seller of the fifties-A Night to Remember--with this eighties version on some mysteries about the sunken liner. One learns about the musicians (two groups actually) and what they played that night while the life boats were being loaded.Another story details the negligence of the freighter Californian for not answering the eight rockets of distress from the Titanic.Another story details the shootings and suicide near the end of the launch of the last life boats.Still another story details why there were not enough life boats on the Titanic and most other ocean liners of the day.Walter Lord clears the air about these mysteries with his well informed writing.
If you want to know more about the Titanic, read both Lord's books on the subject (A Night to Remember, The Night Lives On).They will help the reader understand this tragedy.I have seen the movie and I know the producers consulted these books when they made the movie. ... Read more

We homeschool and have encountered a lot of the topics in our history studies and were impressed by how much the books cover.

Product Description

On April 15, 1912, the HMS Titanic sank, killing 1,517 people and leaving the rest clinging to debris in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic awaiting rescue. Here, historian Nick Barratt tells the ship’s full story, starting from its original conception and design by owners and naval architects at the White Star Line through its construction at the shipyards in Belfast. Lost Voices From the Titanic offers tales of incredible folly and unimaginable courage—the aspirations of the owners, the efforts of the crew, and of course, the eyewitness accounts from those lucky enough to survive.

In narrating the definitive history of the famous ship, Barratt draws from never before seen archive material and eyewitness accounts by participants at every stage of the Titanic’s life. These long-lost voices bring new life to those heartbreaking moments on the fateful Sunday night when families were torn apart and the legend of the Titanic was cemented in our collective imagination.

THE "UNSINKABLE" MEETS THE UNTHINKABLE -- A gripping acount of the ill-fated maiden voyage of the Titanic.

It took 4,000 men to build it, 23 tons of animal grease to slide it into the ocean, 100,000 people to wave bon voyage, but only one wrong move to tear the Titanic apart, sinking it into the pages of history. On a cold moonless night in April of 1912, 2,000 passengers--both the uber-rich enjoying a luxury cruise and the dirt-poor hoping to find a new life in America--struggled to survive. Only 700 suceeded. Lifeboats were launched half-full; women were forced to leave their husbands and sons behind; and even those who made it out alive were forever haunted, constantly wondering "why me?" Told through captivating prose and chilling first-hand accounts, Don Brown take the pieces of the broken Titanic and gives it such a vivid shape that you'd swear you've never heard the story before.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic tale revived, a day and a new book to remember
Captain Smith and Thomas Andrews, the shipbuilder, declared that "the wound was fatal."The great unsinkable Titanic had suffered a mighty blow to the starboard bow and by their calculations, she could only remain afloat for a very short period of time.

The ship's passengers and crew quickly came to life as the ship began its decent to the bottom of the sea.Passengers soon found out that the Titanic had struck an iceberg. It was April 15, 1912, a day that would be remembered for a very long time.Passengers began to awake and rise from their beds to find out what all the commotion was about.Water began to flood below decks. The excitement and fear began to grow as it was evident that not all the 2,200 passengers on board were going to make it to their destination, let alone survive the night.

Jack Phillips and Harold Bride, the ship's radio officers, were desperately busy sending out a new signal for help . . . SOS!The Titanic was in dire need of help! The Carpathia heard and was on its way.

This book had a nice flow to it, a lot of excitement and tension. The beautiful watercolors bring a lot of grace and dignity to this work.I loved the story, but I must admit, I did break into a wide smile when I saw the name Charles Joughin, chief baker on the Titanic. He was purportedly a tad tipsy (well, maybe a LOT tipsy) when he entered the water. This probably saved his life, but in the book it simply states that he used the ship's "railing as a ladder and climbed to the rear of the ship. When she plunged, he neatly hopped off at the water's surface, barely wetting his hair." ... Product Description
A unique below-decks look at life aboard the great ocean liners by a woman at the center of two epic maritime disasters--the Titanic and the Britannic. From her vantage as a former ship stewardess, Violet Jessop provides fascinating tales of fellow stewards, impossible passengers, philandering shipmates, exotic ports, and tragic deaths. 35 photos and documents.Amazon.com Review
The photos in Violet Jessop's moving memoir reveal her to havebeen still lovelier than Titanic star KateWinslet, but that only made her job harder as a stewardess aboard theship. As reported by John Maxtone-Graham, Jessop's beauty no doubtincreased her troubles with the "philandering captains andpursers, loquacious or insufferable fellow stewardesses, and an arrayof sometimes horrifying passengers."

But Jessop had no problem dishing the dirt on all aboard, theliveliest being her fellow steward Tim Nolan. "He had theappearance of a venerable archdeacon, the contrariness of the Irish, the rosy face of a child, and the soul of a vagabond," shereports. "It would take a mathematician to keep count of theresolutions made and broken by Tim to refrain from 'a drop of cheer'during one Atlantic crossing." Nolan had to stash his drops ofcheer in rich folks' cabins, once being forced to hide under anoccupied bed all day in a scene worthy of the Marxbrothers. "Sure, wasn't I afraid I was going to sneeze every timeI took a breath? It's me that'll be sober from now on," vowedNolan.

Nolan's encounter with a stuffed mermaid and a flesh-and-blood circusfreak named the Bear Woman really freaked him out. "It tookseveral people to convince Tim he was not still 'under the influence'and 'seeing things,'" Jessop writes. "The combination of themermaid (he could not forget her placid expression and dainty arms)and the Bear Woman did a lot towards keeping Tim on the waterwagon."

Jessop's account of her last conversation with another colleague,Stan, who saved her life by ordering her to hustle up to the lifeboatthat his sex disqualified him from boarding, is touching. They arguedabout her clothes."I said as he brought forth my new springoutfit, all trimmings and things," writes Jessop, "'That'sno rig for a shipwreck, all fussed up and gay.' Suddenly, I was tryingto be jocular, afraid I might cry ... 'So long, Stan. Come up yourselfsoon, won't you?' He was standing with his arm clasped behind him inthe corner ... He suddenly looked very tired. Good old, ugly-faced,big-hearted Stanley!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Titantic Survivor
I have been fascinated by the Titanic since I was a teenager, have read just about every book and article about the ship, have most of the books ever published about her. This was long before Bob Ballard located Titanic and James Cameron made the movie.Violet Jessop had always fascinated me because of the fact that she served on several doomed ships and survived. This book gave an insight into her personality as well as to what life was like for the great liners' crews. I was actually more interestd in her accounts of life aboard the ships than the disasters themselves.I have always been interested inhistorical events and the individual people who were part of them. For the most part, history books just devote a few paragraphs to any one thing and they always left me wondering about the individuals who were there and lived through it.Although Ms. Jessop did not dwell on the sinking, her account of cruise ship life was fascinating.

violet jessop was the tpye person i would had love to meet.she survive titanic but titanic sister ships.only thing didn't like about this book was it was not longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Titanic was just a small part of this full, rich life
How I would have loved to have met Violet Jessop. Her book is frustratingly short and I have so many questions that I would love to ask her about her years at sea.She attaches very little importance to her experiences during the sinkings of the Titanic and Brittanic, and doesn't even mention the Olympic collision of 1911 - her story is the day-to-day drudgery of dealing with entitlement queens and first-class divas on the luxury liners of the early part of the last century. Her descriptions of of herclients and her fellow seamen are by turns hilarious and sad.Her work sounds like something that I wouldn't want to do for a million dollars a year. But she did it well and, for a person who was not expected to live much past her seventh birthday, she had an amazing, interesting and LONG life.A book not to be missed; I only wish there were more of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Could NOT Put This Book Down!!
I know that many people will buy this book for the fact alone that Miss Jessop survived the Titanic sinking. That episode, however, represents only a tiny fraction of the entire tapestry of her life, and it is that "saga", recounted here with invaluable editing and background information, that is truly riveting.

Prior to reading this book, I was familiar with Miss Jessop's White Star collision and sinking experiences onboard the Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic, but had NO idea of the rest of her work, background or personality.

What a life! And when you finish reading this, you will be hoping that there are more memoirs hidden somewhere!I did a marathon read of this book, not being able to stop until I finished.

This book is truly a winner!I am so thankful that it has been published. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Showing children the good side of a bad situation....
In the Dorling Kindersley "level two" readers, the sentences are longer and the vocabulary is more challenging. The information boxes are full of extra fun facts and there is a simple index in each book.

The beautiful illustrations and full-color photographs make this story come to life. This story focuses on one family who sets sail for America aboard the Titanic. The story starts as an adventure and ends in tragedy, yet the father is united with this family. I think that was a wise choice and the author was very aware of the fear children have of loosing a parent.

There is safety information in this book which explains how the disaster did help prevent deaths in the future. Now all ships carry enough lifeboats for everyone on board.

Book Review by Linda Lewis
<><><><><><><><>

The content of the book starts with background history of Jennifer Carter, the first woman to dive on Titanic. She talks about what it was like growing up in her family, as young girl who had so many dreams. Then Jennifer relates to the experience of surviving an abusive marriage. There are exciting action packed adventures under the mentorship of Ralph White, skydiving, scuba diving, and para sailing. Then there's the search for the Loch Ness monster with Ralph White and Emory Kristof of National Geographic. You will read about her work with Steven Low in the making of the Imax Film, "Titanica", featuring Ralph White, Steve Blasco, Emory Kristof, and Anatoly Sagalevitch (chief scientist for the Russian Academy of Science) of the "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh". Most of us like domestic animals, like cats and dogs, not Jennifer...she stares into the eyes of whales and sharks and reaches out and touches them!

Jennifer has won an "Emmy" for her work on the National Geographic special, "The Great Whale". She has swum with sharks in Steven Spielberg's, "Jaws". She has also dove with renowned shark handlers in "The Sharks", on PBS, and goes on to tell about her harrowing experience on the "Majestic Explorer" cruise ship, that hit a large rock and started to sink.

As a Titanic fanatic, she is faced with a similar dilemma of which the object was survival. Jennifer was the expedition leader for the French/American expedition in 1987, in which she tells about the eight weeks of turmoil and tension between the French and the Americans aboard the ship and the thief in their midst. She then goes on to share her experience of her dive to two and a half miles below the Atlantic to where the crumpled wreck of Titanic lays motionless, her dream finally fulfilled. Jennifer has faced all of her obstacles head on that have lain before her. As a woman, she has had to fight and work even harder to prove that she is a very strong, courageous and competent woman, able to accomplish any job or dream.

Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down! I wanted to see what adventure was next as I felt so many emotions of anger, sadness, laughter and excitement. Jennifer Carter is a definite inspiration to all those with dreams, that might seem unreachable. She proves that anything is possible, with hard work and determination.

The co-author, Joel Hirschhorn, is her husband and confidant, who has won two academy awards for writing the love songs for disaster films, "The Morning After" from the "Poseidon Adventure" and "We May Never Love Like This Again" from the "Towering Inferno". His songs have sold over 94 million records including 14 gold records. He has authored four best sellers and was "Tony-nominated" for his work on the score in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Very exciting reading!

Two of my favorite recent books are "Into Thin Air" and "The Perfect Storm.""Titanic Adventure" is a thrilling addition and adds up to a great trilogy.I'm a strong admirer ofWilliam F. Buckley, Jr. and when I saw his enthusiastic endorsement of"Titanic Adventure," I had to pick it up and see why he was soexcited. Before the first chapter was halfway over, I knew. This is notjust another Titanic story -- not at all. It's an amazing,suspense-packed, unforgettable drama of a courageous woman who fought allobstacles to become the first woman to dive to the Titanic.

What Iliked most about the main character was her humanity. She's no cardboardsuperwoman, but a person with fears and doubts who pushed ahead andovercame them to fulfill her dreams. She faced a shipwreck, twohurricanes, a killer fog and a Captain Queeg-like enemy on board ship andshe refused to knuckle under and let herself be destroyed.I only hopethis becomes a movie, so the whole world can read about -- and be inspiredby -- a story both unusual and powerfully moving.

2-0 out of 5 stars Battered Housewife Changes Mates, Takes a Dive
I can never get enough of that Titanic stuff. But in these battered housewives stories, you always wonder why it takes so long for the woman to realize she is marrying a creep, or has married one. And though I saw itcoming, I was still surprized at her loot the Titanic attitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true account of high drama, written with flair
School Library Journal - July 1999by Cynthia J. Rieben

A well-paced autobiography of a remarkable gutsy woman whose life-long love of adventure and the sea seemed destined to lead her to the wreck of the Titanic. Carter begins by describing her youthful obsession with the ocean and classicstories of nautical adventure. She recounts events in her youth, her firstmarriage and her devotion to her children as she took on the burden ofsingle motherhood. While maintaining a tedious day job, Carter managed topursue skydiving, parasailing, ballooning, river rafting, hang gliding andskiing. On one fateful trip to Scotland working as a diver for a NationalGeographic shoot, the author met Bob Ballard, who was eventually the firstman to see the wreckage of the Titanic on the ocean floor. She explainshow her varied experiences over the course of many years as a diver, project director and diving coordinator would one day land her the job of alifetime:leader of a French-American expedition to film a documentary onthe salvaging of the ship's artifacts.Much more than just another storyof the Titanic, this is a true account of high drama, written with flair. ... Product Description
The only full-length narrative book, including excerpts from Cameron's journals, on how this landmark film was made, drawn from three years of research and interviews. Its 18 chapters read like an adventure story, and cover Cameron's technique, biography, his research, writing, casting, production and costume design, budgeting, music, marketing, and studio dealings. Twenty-two photos, many seen here for the first time, accompany the text. 22 color photos.Amazon.com Review
Paula Parisi, who spent a decade covering tech-heavy films forThe Hollywood Reporter, is among the very, very few journalistswhom the notoriously thin-skinned director James Cameron trusts. Hegranted her amazing access to Titanic, thecostliest film ever made. Parisi puts you there on that fascinating,top-secret set, while Kate Winslet flirtatiously calls out from thedark, moody grotto of the 100-foot water tank to Leo DiCaprio,"Darling! Come join me on the debris!" We get privilegedglimpses of Cameron shaping his star's performance, right down to hisgait in his crucial entrance to the high-society dinner--"You'rea little too funky chicken there, Leo ... don't nod to thewaiter!"

She has great details about the infamous incident in which some jerkpoisoned the crew with the terrifying hallucinogen PCP, sending 56people to the emergency room. PCP transformed Cameron into a replicaof Schwarzenegger in his film Terminator. "Life imitatesart," Cameron's pal Lewis Abernathy tells Parisi. "One eyewas completely red, just like the Terminator eye. A pupil, no iris, beet red. The other eye looked like he'd been sniffing glue since hewas four ... I'm thinking call an organ donor bank, next of kin... And he puts on this big ol' grin and says, 'Finish the movie,Lewis, you know what to do!'"

The set medic tamed panic with pop music, just like the Titanicorchestra--only Roy Orbison instead of ragtime. Star Bill Paxton madea daring escape from the hospital and got back to the set in time forthe conga line.

Cameron's ego is so damn can-do that he feels he could have saved thepassengers of Titanic if he had been the captain. To save everybody,Cameron tells Parisi, the captain simply should have loaded everybodyaboard the iceberg! "They would have been cold, but they wouldhave lived."

Parisi is the opposite of the typical scorpion-like showbiz reporter;she is pro-Cameron. To get to her unrivalled inside scoops, you haveto wade through gushing sentences such as, "The symmetry andperfection of the room are as awesome as anything out of Kubrick'sBarry Lyndon or The Shining." She does not dwell onthe script's weaknesses, as most of the press and the Academy ofMotion Picture Arts and Sciences did.

But if you have a scintilla of interest in how this infinitelydifficult and technically innovative film was made, Parisi's is thebook to buy. --Tim Appelo ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very technical
I'll buy anything to do with the Titanic, especially books, but I was really disappointed with this book. It's very technical, and not only takes into what happens during planning/filming Titanic, but goes into detail about the three years before it even begun filming. There's a lot of stuff about James Cameron's "Abyss", and there's really more detail than needed.

It's a long hard slog to get through this book, and I wouldn't recommend it for Titanic fans out there. I'd recommend it to people who are interested in Titanic AND who are interested in the film making business. You could learn a lot from James Cameron.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kind of biased and not historically correct
If you are looking for a book on the movie Titanic that includes quotes from the stars, this is not the book for you. The author rarely quoted Leo and Kate and even put in some criticizing facts, like Leo playing video games everyday and Kate calling in sick everyday. While these may be true, she seemed biased because she turned around to praise Cameron. At times it seemed more like Cameron's biography than a book on his movie.
This author is also not an expert on Titanic. What little historical information that is included is wrong. For example, she says the Titanic hit the iceberg at 10:30 pm and sank in 2 hours and 40 minutes, at 2:20 am. It should be that the Titanic hit the iceberg at 11:40 pm and sank at 2:20 am. If she had done her research on the event as well as the movie and it's making, she would have known that.
This book is okay. I would not recommend buying it because I have read better books on the making of this great movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars VeryInteresting
I found this book very good. I am very interested about The Ship Titanic and it's terrible fate. This book is very easy to read and explores just on how James Cameron made the movie. There are many interesting facts therein that as you watch the movie, will make it that more entertaining.(VLS)

4-0 out of 5 stars The InterWorkings of a movie mastermind
This book brought the movie into a new perspective. It made it very easy to explain certain scenes to our kids, so that they could truly understand the complexity of the movie and thus of the disaster. The actors/actressesspeaking of the fear they felt on the set just trying to recreate the worstmaritime disaster in history-gives us a small glimpse of what thepassengers/crew faced that nite. Also, it gave us a new respect for all thehard work, long hours, difficulties that had to be overcome to delivery thegreatest movie of all time to the public. Also, we get to see that JamesCameron is human, he gets frustrated and upset just like everyone else, that in and of itself was reassuring, because he is so often portrayed aslarger than life.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Inside Scoop
This book is the closest thing to actually being there whilethe film was made.Parisi's exclusive access to the set and Cameronpermits an over the shoulder view describing details and nuances that went into making a movie of epic proportions. Many facets of directing are not generally known and we are made aware of the struggle and persistence to get things done. Thus we have insight into the genius of Cameron and respect for the author's ability to translate the enormity of making this masterpiece.I enjoyed being a fly on the wall thanks to Parisi's book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Haunting and absorbing history
Although this book is supposedly about the sinking and finding of the Titanic the true story in this book is about the effect the Titanic has had on all those who have been in contact with her. Charles Pellegrino's emotional narrative on both the sinking and the discovery of this special ship keep this from being just another dry documentary. Of special intrest (especially in retrospect) is his description of how anyone who has come in contact with her (Titanic) has had their life altered by the experience. Remember this book was written BEFORE the James Cameron blockbuster and look at the effect Titanic has had on his life. Recommended for anyone who is a Titanic buff.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most interesting book
Mr. Pellegrino has written an excellent book about that tragic ship and about the background of the men who found her. A must have for any serious TITANIC "buff". It is also a great companion book to Dr. Ballards "Dicovery of the TITANIC" as it offers insights not contained in his book. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
On the cover of The Last Days of the Titanic, CaptainSmith peers at a lifeboat far below with a portentously worry-furrowedexpression (there's a blow-up of the photo inside). The photo, whichcaptures the man's soul, was taken at the start of the Titanic's tripby Francis Browne, a priest who got a ticket for the first coupledays' voyage--before the Atlantic crossing--as a present from hisuncle. Browne was no dumb shutterbug; he beat his classmate JamesJoyce on his honours exams (and Joyce put him in Finnegans Wake as"Mr. Browne, the Jesuit"). Browne studied the great mastersin Florence, and his educated eye is evident in his compositions. Hepublished FatherBrowne's Ireland and many other books, and the head of KodakGreat Britain took one look at Browne's work and gave him free filmfor life.

This book boasts several photos of unique interest, including the onlyknown clear shot of the part of the ship that remains almost intacttoday, the forecastle, which hit bottom first. It's also got somehuman interest: Browne, who died in 1960, almost missed the chance towin the Croix de Guerre for war heroism, save souls, and make art allhis life, because of the kindness of an American millionaire couple hemet at dinner on the Titanic. They liked Browne so much they offeredto pay his way to New York. He wired his Jesuit superior, who wiredback, "GET OFF THAT SHIP."

It was, Browne noted, "the only time holy obedience saved a man'slife!" And his pictures give a genuine sense of life aboard thedoomed boat. --Tim Appelo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful rare photographs
This is a wonderful collection of the original photographs that are often reproduced elsewhere and both mislabeled as well as miscredited. Most noteworthy, the photo of the Olympic (in this volume) that is often attributed as the "last shot of the Titanic"...a great collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars chilling
photo's of ill-fated ship titanic is hidden tresure.the pictures are fascinating and chilling.the pictures of captain smith peering down chill you to the bone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The pictures were great.
the pictures helped show me how exactly the life was for the passangers in this great ship.

3-0 out of 5 stars very good for a titanic historian
As a Titanic Historian and a avid book reader I found this particular book to be a great reference for a person who wants to see life on the great ship. however the book was based upon father brownes photographs and since he took only a few onboard, the book is rather incomplete. but I still enjoyed it and still open it up every now and then.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Best...
The 10 for this book goes alot to Father Francis Browne who compiled his wonderful and unique collection of pictures, notes, and letters which he aquired during and after the Titanic tragedy,as a passenger on the Titanic. As Father Browne disembarked at Queenstown,Ireland,he was saved however had several friends aboard the ship and liked to take alot of pictures which he arranged in an album, writing his thoughts about each as he went along. There are a few pictures of other ships but this book is about the first 2 days aboard Titanic as a passenger and the aftermath. To be found in someone's attic, the photo album is a true Titanic treasure. The information is good, however not a wealth of technology as far as the construstion of the ship;this is rather personal which can tend to give one goosebumps.... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars SURVIVAL TITANIC
I recommend this book to kids aged 10-15 because it's a book about history and about surviving a shipwreck. This book has good excitement and suspense, you don't know if Karolina or Gavin will make it alive. This book can help kids in a lot of different situations; such as a social studies test about when the TITANIC sank, also this could actually save kids lives if they are really on a sinking ship. What if you loved your aunt so much that if a ship was about to sink that you could save your self-including your aunt. Karolinaand Gavin saved a lot of peoples lives by telling people to "get to a life boat immediately". This book is a good thriller and I suggest you read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
I thought that this book was well written though it did take some times to get into the plot.At certain time I did think that it got a little dull but overall it was well written and quite interesting. If your wondering about the reading level it would be about right for grades 4-7.For forth graders it may be a little difficult and for seventh graders it may be a little easy.Overall, I would recomend this book to most people unless they need action 100% all of the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A survival story about two kids on the Titanic.
After her parents die in England, Karolina's aunt comes to take her home to America. Although she misses her parents terribly, she has resigned herself to the fact that they are never coming back, and she tries to enjoythe trip home on the Titanic, sad as she is. Gavin, who is twelve likeKarolina, is earning his passage to America by working in the Titanic'sgalley. He misses his family back home in Ireland but is eager to join hisolder brother in New York. Gavin and Karolina meet by chance one night andbecome friends. On the night the ship sinks, they are thrown together, fighting to survive the terrible disaster. I reccomend this book if youlike survival stories or books about the Titanic or shipwrecks.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book sure did hit the iceberg
This was the worst book that I have ever read!It was uneventful and boring.Karolina and Gavin are the usual characters in a Titanic book which made them very original.I do not recommend this book to anyone.I thought that it was badly written as well as a put-to-sleeper.If youenjoy good books, do not read this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all!
Ok, this is not the best Sherlock Holmes book I have read but it was actually quite enjoyable!Actually it should be titled "Dr Watson and the Titanic Tragedy."Holmes is in it but Watson is certainly in the forefront.
Despite this I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Brisk and enjoyable slice of Sherlockiana
In my view , by far the best non Doyle tales of Holmes are those written by Laurie R King and featuring Mary Russell partnering the great man in retirement.Indeed I am unable to resist the somewhat heretical notion that in many respects they are not merely good and worthwhile novels in their own right but-and here many will flinch and possibly question my parentage as well as my judgement--they strike me as at least the equal of all the Doyle Holmes novels,Baskerville alone excepted. The meat of Holmes was the short stories and I ado not feel the rest of his Holmes novels were all that good.
William Seil does not approach the quality of either Ms King or other of the better pastiche Holmesians like Boyer and Meyer but he does give us a brisk and sprightly novel that bubbles along quite nicely and entertains the reader well enough.#
Part of a series from Breese Books of London , in which various authors re-imagine Holmes in a multiplicity of situations this one --narrated of course by the stalwart Watson--sees him on board the Titanic acting in concert with Irene Adlers daughter ,now a British agentto see the safe delivery to New York of British plans for a new submarine. There are plenty os fuspects when the plans vanish--a grimTeutonic couple;an American adventuress ;the brother of the late Professor Moriarty
etc.Stir in a Marxist plot to blow up the vessel as an Anti-Capitalist statement and the plot buils and bubbles nicely.
The book does sag from time to time and the mass of technical detail about the ship's engines etc gets a tad wearisome .Another problem is the knowledge we are burdened with as readers about the fate of the vessel which tends to make us less responsive to the foreground plot than we need to be for maximum involvement.
I was pleased to note the captain and crew escape the disgraceful character assassination that was so marked a feature
of the despicable movie and was impressed by the power of the scenes depicting the sinking of the ship.
Holmes is not drawn especially well but Watson comes across in a strong light and the author draws an interesting parallel between Watson and his passion for writing historical novels with Conan Doyle who had similar enthusiasms,
Good lightweight entertainment that will keep Holmesians happy enough for a few hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pastiche
I love Holmes and Watson, so I have read many of the pastiche.I believe this was the best of all.Contrary to a few of the other reviews, I thought this Holmes was very true to form, and that the author absolutely nailed Watson.I also thought he did a good job capturing the Titanic scene.I recommend this highly to anyone who likes Holmes or the lore of the Titanic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read that doesn't go down with the ship
No one would be surprised to find that this book features Sherlock Holmesin an adventure set on board the Titanic. And it will also be no surprisefor me to say that the ship sinks towards the end of the book.

WilliamSeil sets out to set up an intriguing group of passengers, many of who haveulterior motives, as Holmes and Watson form part of a party protectingsecret submarine plans being transported to America on the Titanic's maidenvoyage.

The cast includes relatives of better-known Holmesian mainstays -we have Christine Norton, daughter of Irene Adler, and Colonel JamesMoriarty, brother to the more famous professor. As well as fictionalcharacters, actual members of the crew and passengers of the Titanic playtheir roles.I was well pleased to see mystery writer Jacques Futrellegiven a significant role in the novel.Sadly, Futrelle's stories ofProfessor Van Dusen, the Thinking Machine, have been allowed to fall out ofprint, but it is particularly good to see Watson and Futrelle makereference to the Thinking Machine's exploits and to contrast them toHolmes' own during the novel.I'd suggest that his role is a due tributeto one of the many victims of the Titanic's fatal voyage.

As the novelprogresses, a number of stories are played out as the reader sees thedifferent suspects duly investigated. The characters are driven by aperceived deadline in the ship's arrival in New York, but we readers knowthat the iceberg is waiting to cut short the events of the book.

This isSeil's first book (and only to date...), and does show some of theweaknesses of first books - such as a desire to pack too much in.However, his writing style is pleasing and characters fairly well-defined.Whilenot breaking new ground (hardly a requirement in a Holmes' book) is adecent if unchallenging read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing
This appears to be a book that wanted to capitalize on two things--the popularity of both the Titanic and Sherlock Holmes.Unfortunately, it does neither of them justice.Seil does not have a handle on Holmes'character, and the Great Detective comes across as a shadow of his former self. Entrusting a fledgling agent (and Irene Adler's daughter, no less--OY!)with such an important mission is unrealistic. And, if all else fails andthe plot runs dry (which it frequently does), throw in some trivia aboutthe Titanic to fill in space. Neither Sherlockians or Titanic afficianadoswill like this book.At least this one does not. ... Read more

making a sequel is hard enough but to make a book interesting after titanic sinking is a tough one .the author pull it of very will.she show how the survivers went on with life deal with the love on they lose on the great ship.

2-0 out of 5 stars As good as I expected.
It's no secret that Titanic: The Long Night has been one of my favorite books since I was young. When I found that there was a sequel, I was a little wary of approaching it, because I didn't feel that Diane Hoh would be able to add on to (in my opinion) an already complete story.

I wasn't wrong.

Yes, we got to see how each of the original four (Elizabeth, Max, Katie, and Paddy) managed after the disaster and how they started over, but I feel that none of it was really necessary, especially after an Epilogue had already been included in the previous book. And I felt that part of the reason that so many liked the first book was because, as intertwined as their lives were, Elizabeth and Katie never actually spoke to one another. So, when it happened in this book, I felt that it was very anticlimactic and unnecessary.

All in all, even though I purchased this book at a discounted price, I don't feel that it was worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars READ IT!!
THough the first book ("Titanic: THe Long NIght") is better, this book is still worth your while, and would definately be one to look into. If you, like me, have precious little reading time, dont worry, its not a waste of time. I read this book in like 6th grade, and am now 15 and very dismayed becayse i cant seem to find it in any bookstores!!!**gasp of horror** I have the first book, and its one of my favorites. If only the movie "Titanic" was as good as these books are....

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to the first
You might not expect a sequel to a Titanic book to be a successfull read..but it is!After reading the first, I wanted more and this book left me very content after reading it!
"Remembering the Titanic" begins at a memorial service a year after the sinking and the 4 characters are still struggeling with that night.
Elizabeth is struggeling to regain her independance.Binded by her promise to her father, she has a hard time being able to leave her mother and go to college.Max is losing patience with her, but is also struggeling with his own memories of the sinking.
Katie develops her singing career, but Paddy is becoming distant and desolate, wondering why he survived and not his brother.
The only flaw is that Diane Hoh included an Epilouge in the first book, so we know that everything will turn out a certain way.But this book has its own plot, and there is more to find out.
In the first book I found the Max/Elizabeth romance more exciting that the Irish couple, but this book greatly developed the Katie/Paddy relationship-and I found them equally appealing to Elizabeth and Max. (especially in the last chapter-my favorite part of the book)
I liked the first book so much that it left me wanting more, and thats what I got with this book.I would still say the first book was better, but anyone who read the first book and fell in love with the characters like I did, must read this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Sequel
This sequal to Titanic: The Long Night hits all the right targets in moving on after a terrible disaster. Since there hasn't been a book on the aftermath of the disaster, this was completely new to me. I was able to read this thanks to my friend who happened to have it.
Summary: It's a year after the sinking. Elizabeth Farr has a constant chill to remind her of the disaster and she's also tiring of obeying her father's promise that she takes care of her mother after the disaster. Max Whittaker is now living on his own as an artist, but he is losing patience with Elizabeth since she is now spending more time with her mother and alomost no time with him.Katie Hanrahan is living her dream of being a singer and is becoming popular with the rich. Paddy Kelleher is given a job to write a book on his experiences of the sinking, but he can't help thinking of how he could've possibly saved his brother's life. As the story goes on, Elizabeth, given determination by Max, is set to go to college, but her mother will do anything to keep her daughter by her side, and she soon stoops so low that Elizabeth is soon fears for her and puts Elizabeth's and Max's relationship in jeopardy. Elizabeth also thinks that Max has moved on, but when she sees his shocking new paintings, she realizes he hasn't put the disaster behind him as well. Meanwhile, Katie is angry at Paddy for spending more time with publishers rather than with her and when she sees Paddy talking with another girl, she no longer wants to see him. Two things to look forward to in this book: Elizabeth and Katie meet face to face, and a fire puts one of the charactor's life on the line. Exciting! Reaction: This book is too short, about half the size of its prequel, otherwise this book is amazing! Its unpredictability will make you hold on to it until it ends. Something worth buying. If you can find it! ... Read more

I would recomend it to Titanic lovers

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully and sensitively written
I have to admit that before I saw the movie Titanic I wasn't very interested. Since I saw the movie a month and a half ago, I have been reading every book on the Titanic I can get my hands on.I loved the way this was written from beginning to end. Most of the other books just go over what we saw in the movie, while this book let's you in on things that happened in 1912 that weren't talked about in the movie. This is a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating research of the begining to an end.
As a Civil War Historian I've become accutely aware of fact vs. fiction and how emotion rips the truth from the printed word.It is pleasureable to say that from my first reading of this book Geoff Tibballs, has not thrown away the facts for fiction. He has instead put together quite a remarkable piece of work, topping it off with the final chapter "The legacy of the Titanic".

It's pages are filled with first hand accounts and plenty of descriptive material, leading the reader from the very first thoughts of building the magestic liner to it's tragic and heart felt demise in early morning hours of April 15, 1912. If you're historically minded or just mildly interested and are looking for a quality book on the Titanic that's easy to read and enjoyable to follow, this is the book for you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars titanic cospiracy review
Interesting read.Had heard several of these stories (rumors?), some plausible, some not.As a Titanic buff, it is a most welcome addition to my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Questions, doubts, carelessness, but no conspiracy
Forget the movie. This book builds upon extensive research from survivors' testimonies and interviews. There were two well-documented investigations. In the US there were Senate Committee hearings and in England there was a Court of Inquiry. The findings were so shocking that today's rules of Safety at Sea take into account this historic disaster. Some questions are answered like why did so many people not even try to get off a sinking ship. The answer is revealed. Why did the captain ignore the warnings of ice? What about the ship's speed? And, so very many other questions about missing binoculars, the ongoing fire in one of the bunkers, ships at sea near the disaster area, and much more.

There are a few unfounded questions like perhaps the ship was switched with her sister ship. Why did some passengers cancel their cruise at the last minute. Why were the life boats half empty? All the detail you would ever want in a book of this magnitude and far-reaching implications.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oy Vey....
C'mon this seems completely ridiculous...the Olympic is having some problems..."hey I know...let's switch plates...no one would EVER know"....egads

4-0 out of 5 stars DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THIS BOOK
Based on the title, I first thought this book would be like a tabloid paper, little better than a hardback National Enquirer filled with nonsense. But it turned out to be quite a good read after all.It includes material not found in other Titanic books, and is level headed for the most part. And the story of the sinking is told effectively, conveying the magic of that night. In short, don't underestimate this book.

Of course, though it is far from perfect. The authors are strongly biased, and feel compelled to hit the reader over the head on every page with negative remarks about the shipping line, Americans or anything else they don't like.Space is given to argue the case for Lord and the Californian, but the authors come up with nothing new here, except perhaps to point to the Mount Temple as another possible mystery ship seen from Titanic.

The heaviest criticism directed at this book focuses on the authors contention that the Olympic and Titanic were switched so as to sink the Olympic for insurance reasons.Like most everyone else, I find this to be total nonsense. The arguments put forth for it are laughable.I doubt the authors believe it themselves, probably including it to boost sales.Yet this takes up only a tiny portion of the book.Instead of 'conspiracy', the book would have been better served by the word 'mystery' or mysteries. For we can all agree there were plenty of these surrounding the Titanic. ... Product Description
The first detailed chronology of the Titanic's final hours, with exact times assigned to each event based on current scientific examination of the wreck. How many stars were found on the American flag flying from the Titanic's foremast? How many dogs were on board? What happened to the only other vessel to bear the name Titanic? Why was the Titanic's helmsman prevented from seeing the approaching iceberg? The answers to these questions, and many more, are in this new book by the world's foremost Titanic authorities, John P. Eaton and Charles A. Haas. Based on research conducted on three continents and containing over 625 illustrations, many never published before, this splendid volume covers more than 250 important dates in the Titanic story, from the births of key players in the tragedy to the latest expedition to recover artifacts, and includes the first detailed accounts of how the public learned the news of the sinking as well as court hearings to establish ownership rights to the wreck. An exclusive selection of the authors' own photographs of recent expeditions, plus new material and artifact photographs, make this an essential book for both the serious historian and the casual reader. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars PICTURES GALORE !!!
The most pictures I've seen from the Titanic and the events surrounding its demise. If you aren't into reading detailed accounts and love pictures then this book is perfect for you. Each page is filled with numerous pictures and a brief description of the people and events involved and how it plays into the whole story. Two thumbs way up. One of my favorites.

Very rare thatauthors can keep a story fresh. But somehow Charles Haas and Jack Eaton manage to turn up new exciting finds in the story of the Titanic. Buy this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Recycled, sloppy, but has some value.
I was looking forward to this book since I enjoyed Triumph and Tragedy and because the title and the advance write-up emphasized a Titanic timeline of events. But I was surprised by what some of the timeline contained. Forinstance, it has the first smokestack falling over at 2:05, followed byLightoller carefully lowering collapsible D from the boat deck. How canthis be when everyone knows Lightoller's testimony and his later memoirsmention that he had been in the water for a while when the smokestack fellover and just missed striking him? This seems sloppy, especially since theemphasis of this book is the timeline itself. In another case, the exactsame Bruce Ismay photograph was used on page 64 and 116. And a lot of thephotographs seem to be repeats of Triumph and Tragedy.

On a positivenote, I enjoyed the 8 color pages insert in the middle of the book (thebalance is black and white), and thought the events following the disasterthrough today made for fresh reading (although simple exhibits of Titanicartifacts are repeatedly listed in the timeline as if they are signficant"events.")

This book has been listed on the Amazon page forfour months now as a 625 page book when in fact, it is a 248 page book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Titanic Book
Charles Haas and Jack Eaton are very capable maritime writers. But what they have given us is arehash of their book, " Triumph and Tragedy ". There are some wonderful new pictures in this book, but theirchronology is a bit off. In the times where new info is being sought, thisbook falls short of that. Still, it is a welcome edition to your library. ... Read more
