Product Description
Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes affect communities across the United States every year, causing fatalities, destroying property and crops, and disrupting businesses. Tornadoes are the most destructive products of severe thunderstorms, and second only to flash flooding as the cause for most thunderstorm-related fatalities. Damages from violent tornadoes seem to be increasing, similar to the trend for other natural hazards, in part due to changing population demographics and more weather-sensitive infrastructure, and some analysts indicate that losses of $1 billion or more from single tornado events are becoming more frequent. This book discusses issues such as forecasting and issuing warnings for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, the role of mitigation and the effect of climate change. The book also discusses the role of the National Weather Service in forecasting severe weather and communicating the risk to communities and individuals. ... Read more

Product Description

This workbook is designed to help students develop vocabulary strategies and broaden their general vocabulary knowledge. Each unit features activities that preview the target vocabulary and teach word families and practice word forms. Each unit focuses on a different vocabulary development strategy and then offers practice in that strategy. Strategies featured in this workbook are: prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, understanding words with multiple meanings, collocations, phrasal verbs, recognizing definitions in text, and word stems. The activities recycle the vocabulary in the reading passages.

The Forces of Nature workbooks combine high-interest readings with skills development activities. Each of the five workbooks features a different skills focus—reading, vocabulary, grammar, study skills, and multi-skill review with writing activities.

Each content-based workbook also focuses on a different force of nature—earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and floods, blizzards, and wildfires. These events were selected because they allow students to develop an understanding of natural events that threaten property, ways of life, and lives. Because information about preparing for a disaster is sometimes unavailable or not at a level that is understandable to some of today’s students, tips for surviving each force of nature are presented at the end of each workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deadly Storms...for Younger Readers!
Throughout history, tornadoes and hurricanes have brought about horrendous death and destruction worldwide. Gary Jeffrey examines TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS in this 2007 entry in Rosen Publishing's 'Graphic Natural Disasters' series. Like others in the series, it's intended for readers in the 9-12 age group.

After four pages of text and photographs detailing the nature/history of tornadoes and superstorms, the book presents Graphic Novel stories on the Tri-State Tornado of 1925, the Halloween Storm of 1991 and the 1997 Jarrell Killer Tornado. Illustrator Terry Riley does a good job of presenting the reality of such storms. People in peril are depicted but the presentation isn't sensationalistic. Readers in the 9-12 group should be able to handle the material. The book wraps up with a section on weather warning technology, a glossary and a 'For Further Information' section.

TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS does an effective, dramatic job of introducing those deadly winds to younger readers. Recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tornado Book
Although this book is now very dated, it's still an interesting read.My grade school library owned the book when it was new and I must have checked it out 25 times. It explains the formation of tornadoes in easy-to-read children's English. The book also mentions weather technologies like Doppler radar, only its formative stages in the early 80s when this book was published. As weather geeks like me know, Doppler radar is a critical device in modern-day forecasting.

It also includes the text of several tornado warnings as written by the National Weather Service. Its account of the Terrible Tuesday storms of 1979 are fantastic. But by far the book's best feature is its photography. There are many great tornado pictures here!If you're into tornadoes or just weather in general, this cost-effective purchase is well worth it.

Children's Press had some great books back in the day, including this book, in its "Disaster!" series.Check out "Disaster! Hurricane" too. ... Read more

The wind, rain and sea are powerful forces with the potential to cause devastation. Natural Disasters introduces children to nature at its most powerful, showing not only the damage that can be done to people and property but also ways in which we are able to forecast weather to minimise damage. Each book begins with an introduction describing the forces of nature, how they begin and what makes them grow stronger. The books then go on to show how and where disasters occur, other weather phenomena associated with the same natural forces, and how we track and respond to them. Each book contains a table of contents, a glossary and an index. ... Read more

Excerpt: Hurricane Felicia was the third strongest tropical cyclone of the 2009 Pacific hurricane season and, at the time, strongest in the eastern Pacific since Hurricane Daniel in 2006. Forming on August 3 as Tropical Depression Eight-E, the system quickly developed deep convection. By the following morning, the depression became a tropical storm, receiving the name Felicia. Throughout the day, the storm rapidly intensified, attaining hurricane status early on August 4. By the afternoon, the storm featured a well-defined eye and further intensified into a major hurricane. During the evening hours, the storm further intensified into a Category 4 hurricane. Several hours later, the storm attained its peak intensity with winds of 145 mph (230 km/h) and a barometric pressure of 935 mbar (hPa; 27.61 inHg). After reaching this strength, the hurricane gradually weakened as it tracked generally towards the northwest. By August 8, Felicia weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and later a tropical storm on August 9. The following day, the storm turned nearly due west towards Hawaii, continuing to lose strength. On August 11, Felicia weakened to a tropical depression and quickly degenerated into a remnant lo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19538859 ... Read more

Excerpt: 1936 Atlantic hurricane season -On June 9, a tropical storm made landfall on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. It moved northeastward across Central America, and entered the western Caribbean Sea on June 11. The storm quickly re-organized, and again developed into a tropical storm on June 12. It moved north-northeastward, resulting in light winds as it paralleled the eastern coasts of Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula. After reaching the Gulf of Mexico with peak winds of 45 miles per hour (72 km/h), the storm turned to the northeast, then to the east. On June 15, the tropical storm made landfall about 20 miles (32 km) to the south of Fort Myers, Florida, and after crossing the state it passed over Miami before entering the Atlantic Ocean. It weakened as it accelerated northeastward through the Bahamas, and on June 17 the system dissipated to the north of Bermuda. While crossing Central America, the storm produced heavy rainfall. In southern Florida, winds from the storm ranged from 30 miles per hour (48 km/h) to a peak of 39 miles per hour (63 km/h) in Miami. The storm produced heavy rainfall in southern Florida, ranging from 8 to 15 inches (200 to 380 mm). The rainfall caused flooding of highways and lowlands, drowned several livestock, and some damage. The storm caused three indirect deaths when a Coast Guard airplane crashed in Tampa Bay while in search of small boats. An area of disturbed weather was first detected near the Yucatan Peninsula on June 18. It tracked wes...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1458045 ... Read more
