2-0 out of 5 stars research only
This map is enormous. Don't expect to take it with you. Kind of a waste of money, even though it's fun to look at before you go. I'm sure there is a smaller one you can get at the park.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK but need a smaller-scale map for navigating
We're using this map now to plan a Patagonia trip next year. I wish I had 1:24000 scale maps to supplement this overview. A 1:80K map with 100 meter contours leaves a lot to the imagination. However it is very helpful supplenet to a good guidebook like the Lonely Planet Patagonian Andes book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great map
Used this on our trek to Torres del Paine. It was our favorite map- we had to others- but this one is the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Torres del Paine trekking map
This was the best of the maps for the Parque Nacional that I saw while there.Good detail of the terrain, but would have liked more consistent information on trail distances in km.Distances are recorded in hours it takes to hike each segment, which is a standard that the other maps of the park use. However, the times given were a good estimate of the time it takes to hike each part of the trail. What isn't clear from any of the maps is the difficulty or rough conditions of many of the trails. In general, trekking in the park is moderately challenging, but the condition of many of the trails (rocky, steep, and/or highly eroded in places) makes it more so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trekking map
This is just what I needed. The paths are clearly marked as are the camp sites and contour lines. Some of the print is very small and sometimes blends in too much with the background colour, but you will be able to work it out.All walks are also given an approximate walking time which really helps give an idea of the terrain before you go there. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Guidebook For 6000m Peaks
The big expedition peaks are usually beyond the reach of most amateurs. However, paying for permits (to the Nepal Mountaineering Association) costing only a few hundred bucks and taking only a few days to process (through a well-connected agency), you can tackle the "trekking peaks" of Nepal. Even though they are called trekking peaks, some of these mountains can pose serious challenges even for experienced mountaineers.

This book is a must for climbing enthusiasts who wish to do trekking peaks either as expeditions or alpine style. There are details on the approach to base camp, the different routes for getting up, the technical difficulty and even some historical information. There are even chapters on first aid, rescue, light-weight expedition planning.

My only complaint is that the "maps" (more like sketches) are a bit difficult to read. The photos are also all in b/w. This book may have "everything" you need to know to climb a trekking peak in Nepal, but guides are still a must, not so much because it's a requirement by the NMA, but some of the info in the book can be readily "outdated" by avalanches, landslides and changes in weather conditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jamie McGuinness Rocks
I don't write reviews. But we trekked with this little book 10 years ago and found it informational as well as highly entertaining. Of the 100s of travel guides I've owned, this is the only one I really remember. We still talk about Jamie as a friend. There wasn't anything missing, and these hikes rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book for the region
I used this book while trekking the Gossainkund track and found the book to contain all the information I required. It ensured travel was easy and the details on the villages were extremely helpful. I was travelling without a guide and felt there was no need with this book. Well worth the money if heading to this region, though good to have a general Nepal guide if heading to Nepal for the first time as this book focuses on the trekking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Traveling companion?
Jamie McGuiness' book will prove a good companion for your trek up the Langtang Valley.

The format is easy to use; uncomplicated maps suggest each day's journey and are presented in a page-by-page format. These areaccompanied by route-finding tips, short cuts and interesting diversionsalong the route.

In addition to route-finding information, cultural, historical and philosophical dialogues are highlighted in a series of textboxes.

These dialogues hit the right note; not too much information foryour tired mind recovering in the evening's lodge but sufficient to open anextra window into the landscape and people you are travelling through.

Aswith many specialist trekking guides, there is a brief section coveringorientation in Kathmandu. There is nothing wrong with this but you willfind a general guide book on Nepal MUCH more helpful here (i.e. betteraccomodation, eating and sight-seeing tips).

DON'T get this book if youwant a general guide to Nepal but fancy a bit of trekking on the side.

DOget this book if you want to learn more about Langtang, Helambu andGosainkund as you pass through - its well worth it... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Limited variety of trekking options
A good guide for longer trekking options. However, most of the are located in the same area. Could be better if the book had sorted them based on lenght and difficulty. For someone who is only going to trek, think it has a some great advice. However to get a little bit of both tourist trails and hardcore trek, I would not recommend this book

4-0 out of 5 stars One for the Backpack
Yossi Brain's Trekking in Bolivia is an excellent book from a superb mountain guide who obviously knows Bolivia and her mountains well. If you're planning on hiking in this magnificent country, then Brain's book isthe one for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
Don't bother buying this book, it is no good. Inaccurate maps and descriptions and smart-ass writing style.

1-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Maps!
We found the maps and hiking times listed for destinations very inaccurate. The description of the trail routes lack detail and can be very confusing. One of the hikes we did in Boliva was the Choro Trial. This isONE of the 3 Inca Trails in Boliva. One would assume that of any treks, this one would have been accurate. Not the case.If you are looking for aguide book to help you plan your treks in Boliva and/or Peru go with theBrant Guide book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Offers many alternatives to the standard gringo trade routes
We were looking for off the beaten path backpack trips. In Brain's book we found the standard 'Inca Trail' routes that everyone writes about in addition to trips where we would saw no other tourist for several days. There are about 3 times as many routes described in Brain's book comparedto the Brandt Guide. Also we found the Brain book more up to date.Theonly disappointment was that some of the descriptions were just plainincorrect.I got a feeling that this book was rushed to press. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but a Bit Limited in Scope
This is a great guide and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in hiking in Oman. The maps are clear (if basic but adequate) and the hikes described very rewarding, ranging in length from 1 hour to 2 days each way.
The only complaint I might possibly have is that it only covers a rather small part of the country - adding some hikes for the Dhofar region down south for example would be great.

To avoid disappointment, be prepared that this is not a book!
It is a boxed set of a 16 pages long pamphlet entitled "Trekking Handbook" which contains general trekking info for the country, a decent country/regional map, and 12 folded individual leaflets/"cards" each describing a particular hike with a route map.
They are all printed on pretty hard, durable paper/carton and do the job fine, but quite why they were not bound into a book format is a bit of a mystery. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs updates
Fortunately, the daunting size of the book wasn't a factor.I used Backpacking... in 2000 mainly in Bolivia.I was disconcerted by the lack of updated information, but overall the maps and descriptions are very helpful.I spent three weeks in western Amboro National Park studying river otters and the impact of human presence in the area; I used Bradt's 1995 edition during a reconnaisance into the area two years ago, and found Jon Derksen's descriptions thorough and informative. Two tips--unbuckle your pack while fording rivers, and float your pack during deeper crossings were particularly insightful. What is more, the trip paved the way for the recent otter study. (Mr. Derksen, if you read this, I found the 'message in the bottle' you left in the crack in the 'cave'!Did you ever make it to the headwaters of the Macunucu?).

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this guide with a grain of salt...
Although I've read negative reviews about the 1999 edition, over the past ten years I have used "Trekking and Backpacking in Peru and Bolivia" as a reliable source of information both for myself andfriends.Sure, some of the details are outdated, but there isn't a travelguide out there where that isn't the case. What I like about the Bradtpublication is that it rounds out the hiking experience, offeringalternatives and interesting insights. I have found especially valuable the1995 ed. section on Bolivian National Parks--the information provided agateway to some amazing adventures I had in the Apolobamba (a must see) andAmboro National Park. I know Bolivia quite well, and can say that this bookis an important addition to the Andean travelers backpack.

2-0 out of 5 stars Erroneus and very outdated description of some hikes
I have been using this book when trekking in P&B in 1996. I have found many treks (in Colca Canyon, Cordillera Real for example) to be erroneus and very outdated (15 years at least regarding Colca). I've checked latereditions (but not this one) and they didn'tchange a thing What's goodabout this book is that it at least tells you were you can possibly trek, but be very carefull later and don't trust the book to much or you'll be introuble

3-0 out of 5 stars I found this guide useful, but ...
I used this book in Peru & Bolivia in August 1998, and it was useful, but there are better guides around, at least for Peru. I give it only threestars because it is unnecessarily largeand inconvenient as ause-on-the-trail guide;the maps aren't very comprehensive; and theincidental information on flora, fauna, etc, is superficial.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and informative book for the South American trekker
I found 'Backpacking and Trekking...' a worthwhileread.I've spent six years running tours into the Andes and this latest edition offered me some good tips on some great hikes. Like any guide of its kind some of the information is no longer accurate, but the Bolivia section was particularly useful, since it is the area I know least. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for great trips
Trekking Washington is for people who want ideas for extended backcountry hikes, mostly in the Cascades but also some in the Olympics as well as across the northern BC boundary.By "trek" the author means multi-day mountain trail hikes, ranging in distance from 30 to 246 miles. The average length of the twenty-five treks is 65 miles. For the most part these are outings for people who want to immerse themselves in the landscape rather than just have a quick weekend getaway.I have covered a lot of the described terrain and find the descriptions accurate and the trips worthwhile.

For each of the treks author Woodmansee provides a difficulty rating ("easier" to "most strenuous"), a mileage and total elevation gain calculation, suggested seasons, general information about water availability, logistics and details for reaching trailheads. There's are suggested itineraries at three daily paces (10 miles per day, 10-15 miles per day and 20+ miles per day.).Some trips are obvious to anyone familiar with Washington's mountains (e.g., sections of the PCT and the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier) but several provide novel connections of trail networks or provide more information than just a map to give hikers a feel for what an outing will be like.

Each trek has a day-by-day description of highlights and a selection of high quality color photos (almost always bright sunshine!) to whet one's appetite for the trail or let you know what you missed if your trip is rainy.I dislike the multi-page color shaded relief maps. They take up a lot of space but provide little usable detail. In my opinion b&w sketch maps with more notations would be more helpful and, unlike, say, some of the excellent PCT guide books, you'll absolutely have to buy topo maps to follow these trips (not to mention that the book, printed on heavy coated paper, weighs in at nearly 1 ½ pounds!).

The author has a bias toward so-called "fastingpacking".He opines that the only way to complete the tempting "Cougar Traverse" in the Pasayten Wilderness is to cover the 246 miles in 10 days (25 miles and 5,000' of climbing each day!) due to supply logistics, but it's possible to cache some food with prior planning or slight detours and enjoy a more relaxed pace.In fact several trips require two cars anyway because they don't make complete loops and others have opportunities to lighten loads by caching some food, which the author never mentions.Years ago I routinely knocked off daily mileage in the high teens or twenties on these hikes with conventional - i.e., relatively heavy - gear, but in retrospect feel I missed a lot of details, side trips and just plain wilderness atmosphere in my urgency to keep to a schedule. Now I think, "what's the hurry", (not to mention I'm 30 years older with six extra inches under my pack's waist belt!).

Trekking Washington has a 20-page introduction and appendices with sample gear/food lists, a list of agencies administering the various jurisdictions (with phone numbers and web addresses), a summary of all twenty-five treks that rates them on a 1-5 scale for scenery (most are 5) and probable level of solitude (average about 3), a spotty index and an impressive photo of the super-fit author and a summary of his experience that indicates he likes to hike 25-30 miles per day.

Trekking Washington is highly recommended as a planning and "wish book" when, especially during mid-winter, a hiker's thoughts turn to the possibility of long summer days in the Cascades and Olympics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the ultralight backpacker
Its about time someone wrote a guidebook with the lightweight or ultralight backpacker in mind. While some reviews state that the suggested 20+ mile days are only for the "most fit" backpackers, I disagree.I'm certainly not the most fit and classify myself as a "weekend warrior" since I am only able to leave my desk job and get out for 2-3 extended weekends a year. However, I learned that after getting my packweight down to 20+ pounds and wearing trail running shoes, 20+ mile days are very obtainable. This book caters to the ultralight philosophy.Backpackers are finally starting to catch on to the benefits of ultralight gear and this is the first book I've read that takes this into account. The author points out that by definition, "trekking" entails a distance of at least 30 miles.25 treks through washington are described, as well as an introduction to trekking and also an appendix of gear/menu suggestions that puts the reader on a path towards the lightweight philosophy.Reading this book left me hungry for a "trekking Oregon" verson!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide with Unreasonable Trekking Schedules
This thorough guide provides excellent descriptions of the most stunning hikes in Washington.I have personally sliced out many of its pages and laminated them for numerous hikes. However, a caveat is in order when using this guide. The suggested trekking times are unreasonable for all but the most fit hikers (20+ miles per day in some cases).

While the author provides alternative trip scenarios which cover the same routes, albeit at a reduced pace, the timetables are still unrealistic.Use this guide as a reference only and plan your trips using a Topo map and string (for calculating distances). It is safer and wiser.

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific book!
I have hiked and run the trails all over the Cascades for over 35 years, and have an extensive library of guidebooks (going all the way back to the original Manning's 100 Hikes from 1965).Although there are many excellent guidebooks and a few not so useful, this one is among the very best for the purposes of the fit who want some good long routes that are accurately described and detailed.
Here's why:I have been able to do the majority of the routes Mike describes, or at least portions of them, and I believe that his descriptions are "spot on". True, his recommended daily mileages are excessive for some people (witness a review here by another person), but for almost every trip Mike gives two alternatives to each 20 mile/day itinerary:10-15 mpd, and 10 mpd.For those for whom 10 miles per day is still too much, relax, because there are plenty of guidebooks to trips for a more relaxed pace. So if this book isn't for the folks who don't want to or can't travel long distances, don't condemn it!
One of the strengths of the book is his attention to detail of water availability and campspots. I do, however, find his list of clothing and equipment to be a bit overkill. To do some of these trips with 35 or 40 or 50 pounds would be too punishing to be really enjoyable. It is possible to pair the weight down considerably, perhaps at the sake of comfort but not safety, but that is a whole 'nother story. Also, for those so inclined, running rather than walking allows one to travel easily 35-45 miles per day. Many of the treks Mike describes make fine multi-day fastpacks and can be done in half the time he recommends, even considering his fastest-paced itinerary. But for the trips of over 100 miles, logistics for food become problematic and make running with a 20+ pound pack lots less fun.
The book has excellent production quality, and the selection of photographs is stunning, a tribute to the author's photographic skill and also to the beauty of the Cascades and Olympics.
      Well done, Mike!

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is a good read but. . .
I really enjoyed reading this book because I have done most of the trips described and it brought back lots of good memories. However, the times suggested are unreasonable for most backpackers. Most of us just aren't in as good condition as this author. This doesn't mean the trips can't be enjoyed, just pick his slowest itinerary or chose your own time schedule. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite travel book....
This book is fantastic for planning your trip between countries and used in conjunction with other travel books detailing the countries you're going to.I found myself relying more and more on it alone as a reference guide as I became more comfortable traveling, as it highlights the things to see / how to get there, and leaves the details to the traveler.I also found people fascinated by its hand-drawn maps (beware trying to get the book back from a crowd- including other travelers!).Now that I'm back, it's the only book that completed my journey with me, and resides in a place of honor on my bookshelf, tattered, dog-eared and stained.

5-0 out of 5 stars I knowa good travel book when I see one
I have read and perused many a travel book in my time and I have to say this one is a model for which others shouldbe judged by. I have used travel books extensively through the 100 or so countries I have been to and I wish more travel tomes could match the authors love, maps and general details in their work as these two young fellas have....

5-0 out of 5 stars Traveling with Asia Overland was a pleasure
I used Asia Overland for the first 8 months of a 13 month trip and found it to be excellent. It is written by two guys who are just travellers themselves and have an excellent idea of what is essential when arriving toa strange new place where you do not speak the language.

At the core ofthe book are simple schematic maps of each country/area with notes writtenon them which rate and describe destinations, give travel times and costs, and even give recommendations of guesthouses or restaurants.More detailedmaps are provided for large cities or areas particularily dense with thingsof interest. The format is very easy to understand and allows planning ata glance rather than by reading through pages of cross-referenced text. Again their grasp of what information is essential was nothing short ofincredible. The book also contains a dirth of border-crossing info andtells you which visas you will need and where you can acquire them.Fromtheir own accounts they understood the border rules better than the borderguards did on a few occasions.

More than the information it providesAsia Overland is a well written quidebook.Mark and Wil are extremelyupbeat writers.Their senses of humor and personal accounts really made mewant to go to all the places they wrote about. In summary the book isinformative, accurate, entertaining and inspirational. If you are planninga trip to Asia, one country in Asia, or just trying to think of somedestinations to visit, I highly recommend reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where lonely planet doesn't go
This book is excellent and essential reading for those of us who want to do an epic journey but also like to have help overcoming transport and beauracratic obstacles. I think the optimal would be to use this book inconcert with a lonely planet style book as they cover different topics. This book is mainly a transport and visa stratgy guide with some helpfulhints on routing. The LP books get the finer details on the budgetaccomodation for more cities.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book beats Lonely Planet!
I have known Mark Elliott for seven years and can honestly say that the man knows what he's talking about. He is, in short, a "professional traveler", making his way from Brighton to Bishkek and back withlittle more than a cheap backpack, a harmonica, and a sure sense of how tofind his way among the labyrinths of the Asian hinterlands. He alwaysreturns with several nights' worth of good stories (to be told over a pintor three) and a collection of painstakingly accurate notes and maps of histravels.I have used the materials he sent me through privatecorrespondence and found them to be unfailingly helpful, pointing outcheapskate tips and sightseeing suggestions that I hadn't found anywhereelse. If you're interested in being a modern-day traveler of the Old SilkRoad, then by all means get this book.It will point your feet in theright direction and open your eyes to cultures far removed from anythingyou could imagine while logged on to a computer, shopping for books. Mycopy also doubled as a pillow after a night of beers and Dixie dancing in alittle outdoor bar along the streets of Turfan (but that's another story...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alec Le Sueur's favourite Tibet book!
There are so many books written on Tibet that it's really hard to choose which one is suitable for the armchair read or to take with you when travelling. Having spent five years living in Lhasa and read everythingavailable, I can say that this is the most useful book there is. Practicalmaps are given for every trek, detailed explanations of what you will findenroute and really useful Tibetan phrases for trekkers such as 'Does thisdog bite?' and 'Drink tea!' (If you've been to Tibet you'll know these areimportant phrases!) Every possible trip is covered, from day excursionsinto the hills around Lhasa to longer treks in the Everest Base Camp area.I hope you'll have as much fun reading it as I have. Alec ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for local walking tours, lacking for the longer trips.
I felt that this book would be extremely helpful to me when I read it in America. When I got to Cuzco I found that it was not giving me much more than I could have got on my own.The local trips were well documented inthe day trip section. The walks from downtown Cuzco to the surroundingruins imparticularly were quite good.

The book suffered however througha lack of maps when it came to the longer journeys.Elevation markings, are extremely important in the Andes, the trips were inconceviable withoutthem, and there are no maps in the Cuzco area that are worth mentioning.Ihad planned to go off on my own to do a journey the last 6 days of my monththere and had to cancel it from the information being so shoddy.

Ibelieve it is a good book for local tourism with a adventurous tinge, butdo not rely on his directions going farther than that unless you have, likehim, lived there for a considerable amount of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed Description of the Desert Section of the PCT
This book really describes the experience of walking the first 700 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in great detail, punctuated by moments of humor and strange situations. My only complaint is that it is a bit long, but a good read nonetheless for anyone considering hiking this section or the whole trail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hiking adventure of Harold Margolis
As one who loves the PCT and has made mostly day-hikes from Campo to Cottonwood Pass over several decades, I was somewhat disappointed that the author had not made a through-hike over that same part of the PCT, and in fact had skipped some of it in favor of motor transits. Those few parts that I had been unable to hike because of the long distances between trail-heads were of special interest to me, but turned out to be unrevealing--maybe I hadn't missed anything!Descriptions of flora and fauna were pretty general, esp. the flora, and so not very instructive. Finally, the book needed an editor--lots of grammatical and spelling errors and typos.I suspect the book is of most value to the author and his family as a memoire of a rather long vacation trip.
