4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome plan seeks better editor
The plan itself is excellent and I've tried several. It's already making me a better triathlete. However, the writing/editing could be stronger. It's slightly cumbersome, requiring more page flipping and reading between the lines than I'd prefer, but for the modest investment required, the inconvenience is far outweighed by the strength of the plan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Triathlon Book I have found!
I bought this book on the net after trawling through the many books on the subject. It's always a problem when choosing a book, if will be as described by the author and fit your needs. This book is very well written and gives direct and clear information on how to train for an Ironman event. My reason for purchasing this book was to get a structure for training and it has delivered. I intend to do the Barcelona Ironman in October the rest is up to me because I believe the book should deliver! Try it yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good Information and facts.
This book helps a lot. It teaches you how to train, when to train, what sorts of things you should do, and different foods to eat. This will help you prepare. It is a great purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited
The basics of the program and the information contained within this book are solid. However it was poorly edited. Several swim work outs on the schedule are not described in the work out description section. Why would the authors assume knowledge of these workouts, yet take the time to describe other basic workouts? The formatting of the workouts left me guessing on occasion as nomenclature meaning shifted from one day to the next. There's direction to refer to chapters that do not contain the information needed. Not a perfect reference, I hope it gets me to the finish line!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Training Plan for Those Who Need Daily Motivation
As can be seen in the description, this book assumes its reader is already in very good physical condition as he/she is moving FROM shorter triathlons to a longer "Endurance" or Ironman event. I find it very easy to use the daily training book as a coach pushing down workouts every single day. This leaves no excuse for not getting a solid workout it.
Additionally, the program is properly set up (as would be by 3 very experienced, Olympic-level Ironman athletes/coaches) with Build, IM, Hard, Recovery, Taper and Race Week sections so as to not overtrain and to vary the intensity of the workouts. I think it's great. I'm currently on Week 13 for the second time as I'm doing Louisville this year. Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
I bought this book for my father who enjoys reading about sports and he said it was an intersting and well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Racing the Sunset
Many phychological factors are covered in this book describing the process that the aging professional athlete goes through. It not only applies to the professional athlete but also to us age group athletes who are professional in our own rights. But with age groupers, we are happy competeing at whatever level we find ourselves in at the time, if we have the desire and are not plauged by the aches and pains of life. The number of participants in sporting events goes down exponentially after 55.What motivates us to keep going after that? That's a good question too.A wonderfully written book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for any Triathlete
As an age-group athlete, I enjoyed reading about the exploits of one of the pillars of what is endurance athletics today. While the sport has changed much since those early days of triathlon, the drive to conquer these distances and endure has not.It was also interesting to get a perspective on what drives the endurance athlete to participate and/or get to the top of these types of sporting activities.I also found the book to be a must read for anyone who is currently facing the inevitable forks in the road that life throws at all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book
This book is relevant not just to athletes who are facing the tough transition to retirement, but for anyone facing a change in life which bears significantly on their self-concept. Many of the insights were helpful for me, as back surgery forced me to "retire" from 28 years of distance running. Tinley's writing is engaging, entertaining, and insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading, even better writing
This is a superb introspective look at the fear an athlete feels when the sound of clapping is silenced. This is a true literary gem that takes a qualitatively research based look at a problem too often ignored. I highly recommend this book to anyone who ever suddenly changed stages in life without benefit of a rule book to follow. You will find it engrossing and mind altering. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
Inspirational and full of history. That is something hard to find in today's literature. At first I thought a book that was written in 1987 about triathlons may be irrelevant. The sport has come such a long way from where it began.
Yet I was greatly surprised to find this book is based on timeless things. Competition, determination, will, strength, excitement, endurance...all this and more.
I have yet to do my first Iron but this book sure pushes me to. At the least it makes me want to get up out of my comfy chair and TRI!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Inspiration
I loved the first edition because it mentioned one of the early competitors training for the iron man while living out his van and training himself and others at a health club. This was an inspiratiion to me as an ex-marine/student who lived in his van while attending college and working out/showering in the gym.

My motivation to write this review on an out of print book, was because I would be the first to review it, but I have always referred to the author when people questioned my ability to thrive on a van-lifestyle.My goal was to buy a house by paying for it in cash, but my life has taken a different turn. In any event I am almost 40 years old, in great shape, and have only paid rent for six months in my life.

Thanks Mike Plant for the inspiration. ... Read more

Product Description

To reach their athletic goals, America's 1.1 million triathletes pay top dollar for personal access to the sport's top coaches yet the most sought-after coaches typically work with fewer than 10 athletes every year. This leaves the greater field of contenders in the hands of expensive computer-generated plans with little understanding of how these plans work and why they often don't.

Now all triathletes can benefit from the same expert coaching that the elites enjoy. In Your Best Triathlon Joe Friel illuminates every facet of advanced triathlon training. His meticulous instruction breaks down the season into specific goals that will elevate athletes toward record-breaking performances. Friel explains the nuances of key workouts so athletes can make adjustments for different race distances or individual weaknesses.

The versatility and detail of this book would be daunting to the average athlete, but for the experienced triathlete, it fills a void in training literature and provides the necessary background for adaptations that need to be made on a weekly and daily basis.

Your Best Triathlon
is a book that triathletes will consult throughout the season and every day, just as they would check in with their coach. And with Joe Friel's experience guiding the way, triathletes can race faster and more efficiently than ever before.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are in any way into endurance sports....
I love this book. I was amazed to learn it is out of print. Jeff Cook does an amazing job of taking you inside the life and minds of the greatest athletes in the world. If you are looking for inspiration or motivation of the athletic sort, read this book. I was awestruck at Jeff's ability to extract the emotion and intensity of these athletes. This book was part of an Olympic display at my local library, at the time I was training for my first marathon and thought it would be a great way to boost my motivation, boy did it ever. I found myself having to find seats on the train to work that were out of the way due to my constant tearing, it is that good. I have never competed in a triathlon but since the reading of this book have purchased 3 Ironman videos (I'm addicted) and one day plan to do one. If you are in any way into endurance sports and love to read stories about those who push the body to the physical limit, this one's for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A inspirational biography

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book for first time triathletes!
Gloria Safar's book Triathlon for girls like us is an incredibly helpful guide for those of us wanting to experience a triathlon. I enjoy running, biking and swimming but never entered into any races before. I wanted to challenge myself to try but knew I needed lots of advice to help me through the training process. This book offers an in depth look into training with many practical tips along the way, and it kept me motivated during some of the harder times. If you want to try a triathlon you are in good hands with this insightful book. Highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets you in the spirit to "Give it a tri!"
I love biking and swimming, and have completed short-distance races here and there, but I'm no athlete. Thus, I knew it would take some extra motivation to convince myself I'm capable of a triathlon.Gloria Safar's Triathlon For Girls Like Us has pushed me to take on the challenge, and demonstrated that if you train right, your first triathlon does not have to be a daunting and grueling experience.Gloria imparts more expert advice on getting in shape, modifying your diet, and outfitting yourself with the right equipment than I thought possible on the subject. She will alert you to potential setbacks you might not have thought of, but her invaluable tips, down-to-earth tone, and personal anecdotes are inspiring.Though she herself is an athlete and personal trainer, Gloria reminds readers that she is still just a "girl like us," and understands the various backgrounds, challenges, and constraints faced any woman embarking on a triathlon. With this book as my guide, I'm confident that my first tri will be a success!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read
I thought Gloria's book was well-organized and easy to follow. The flow charts make it very simple to understand. I've been training with Gloria for about 10 years. When I first met Gloria I ran "some" today I can say I am a runner. I have run 8 marathons including Boston; all of which were great experiences because I followed Gloria's schedules and advice. Her simple training schedule has guided me and kept me injury free. I am sure anyone who reads this book and follows her guidance will be successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars need to read it and you will want to begin inmediatly with triathlon training
Gloria's book is an excellent motivation for those women who already make triathlons and a challenge to make one for those who have not yet tried it. It is easy to read and has many nice photographs. If you are a couch potato just read it and you will want to put your running shoes or your swimming suit on, get your bike ready and go out for training ... You can even engage Gloria as your personal trainer. I have just done it, and she is sending me training plans for my next ironman end of August in Louisville. I am sure, that with her help I will improve my best time. Do not hesitate and buy Gloria Safar's book right now. I is worth having it. I assure you! Have fun, Silvia Rose

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for women preparing for a triathlon
Gloria's, Triathlon For Girls Like Us! is an amazing and informative book.Having been given the opportunity to train with Gloria, she really exemplifies and uses the methods which are printed in her book during exercise sessions.Throughout the nine chapter book she gives various training scenarios based on a woman's physical status and triathlon goals.Training for each portion of the race is broken down into simple, easy to read suggestions to insure maximum benefits. Since nutrition is an important part of training, Gloria provides essential information based on a woman's needs and what type of food will best suit her training requirements. Gloria also answers several questions and discusses different scenarios that a woman may encounter while training.Overall, Gloria's book is a must have for any woman even thinking about participating in a triathlon. ...
