Product Description
Canada has given the world the real Winnie the Pooh, the phrase "Beatlemania", and the man who invented the Academy Awards. If it weren't for Canada, we might not have the pie-in-the-face gag, basketball, time zones, or the dotted white line on the middle of highways.

And anyone who still thinks Canada is dull obviously doesn't know about the Canadian who was the longest serving prisoner on Alcatraz, or the night that members of Parliament threw books and toy balloons at each other during a wild debate in the House of Commons. The Great Canadian Trivia Book explores the noteworthy and the notorious, the factual and the phenomenal, the obscure and outlandish sides of the Great White North. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book like the plague
Good Lord, what a truly awful book.Sorry, Doris L. Miller, but it has to be said. The book may have served a purpose before the wide availability of the Internet, but not now.

The author states in the introduction that she compiled information by writing to the local Chambers of Commerce of hundreds of towns...and it shows.I'll praise the effort if not the outcome. The book is chock full of errors, both factual and typographical.(Sam Houston is not buried in Houston, but in Huntsville.I'm pretty sure it's Santa Ana and NOT Santa Anna.)Plus, with a copyright date of 1995, much of the contents is out of date.It wasn't even a well made book; many of the pages were uncut at the top.

After I read the book, I didn't keep it, sell it to the local Half Price Books or even donate it to Goodwill.I tossed it in the trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Least 1836 Things You Ought to Know about Texas But Probably Don't
Lots of trivia and interesting stories. Lots of facts and figures too.

Texas never ceases to fascinate me and this book just adds to that charm! My whole family has enjoyed it, from the 17 year old all the way up to old fuddy-duddy granddad.

It's like having history alive because of the way it is written, as if talking to a friend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart and Fun Learning
As an adult, I was given this as a gift and find it very entertaining. My husband immediately went through the questions testing his knowledge and I went through to read the questions and answers because they are witty and very clever.

This makes a great gift for your smart adult friends as well as their kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I looked forward to receiving this and was very disappointed. The questions are very obscure, more academic than interesting. I prefer the original Trivial Pursuit Questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scholastic Team Resource
Great resource for my high school son who is a Scholastic Team Captain.

4-0 out of 5 stars More for Students.
THE BRAINIAC BOX includes 600 cards that are divided into three categories:blue for math & science, green for arts & humanities, and maroon for social sciences.I'm a trivia buff and am always on the look out for little games to not only study for myself, but to use in the classroom during downtime.I've only made it through about half the cards in the box, but have been a little disappointed. The sub title of these cards is "600 Facts Every Smart Person Should Know" but it should read "600 Facts Every Person Who Wants to Do Well on the SAT or ACT Should Know" because most of the questions are oriented for people studying for standardized tests like those. For example a typical math question is "How many variables are in the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0? (one the x)And for extra credit, what formula is this? (the quadratic equation)".A typical arts & humanities question revolves around vocabulary, for example, "Professor A is a sybarite. Professor B is stultified.Who's cool in school? (Professor A)".There aren't very many questions about the arts, literature, or other humanities.A social sciences question reads, "Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka (1954) was a landmark Supreme Court decision. What was decided, and who argued the case for Brown and the other parents?" (Brown and 13 other black parents would be allowed to enroll their 20 children in an all-white Kansas school.Future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall argued the case). There are some questions that are more entertaining and not as strictly didactic. For example, my favorite card so far was one from math & science, "You have 5 potatoes and 7 children. How can you feed each child equally without using fractions?"The answer:"Serve them mashed potatoes."Overall, this is a nice gift for a student studying for a standardized test.Trivia buffs might enjoy it, but not as much as studying students, but there are some gems. This is also a good gift for high school teachers to use during down time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
This book contains hundreds of useless and fun trivia questions about the older (and some of they newer) Disney characters, films, shorts and attractions. From `Can you name Daisy Duck's three nieces' to `What was Mickey's Starland originally called when it opened in 1988', this book has enough easy trivia mixed within the very picky, unusual facts to keep any type of Disney fan entertained.

The book is also organised very well, with the index listing the character's name, the movie or the attraction. So, want to find questions on Peter Pan?Check out page 57.How about Walt Disney?Page 171 for you!

And of course trivia books are always interactive - one game I played with my little ones was to ask them the questions for a particular movie and then watch that movie so they could find the answers they missed.

Great fun for the family!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read
This was my President's Day gift to myself.I heard the author interviewed on a local radio station, found the book at a local store, and have thoroughly enjoyed it all.The section with questions on the First Ladies is especially interesting. Was also interested in the material about the pre-presidential careers of these guys.I would recommend this to political junkies, or to anyone even remotely interested in US history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice way to learn history
We have had some lousy presidents, but this is not a lousy book.Even the bad presidents were interesting to read about.I knew a lot of the answers to the questions, but some of this material was totally new to me.I like the sort of book that entertains you and educates too.I think the best part was that all the most recent presidents were included, George W. too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Juicy Tidbits
I have been reading this aloud with my kids, so I'm happy to say it is a CLEAN book, but it does have some really neat questions about the presidents' personal lives, such as their hobbies, family life, sports they played, school, military service, and so forth.I was really impressed with so much information about some of the lesser known presidents like Franklin Pierce and Millard Fillmore and others.Obviously the author likes collecting the really quirky bits of info that make history interesting.I gather the book must have been in print before the events of September 11 2001.

4-0 out of 5 stars All the Juicy Tidbits Your Teacher Forgot to Tell You
I thought I knew a lot about US history, but I kept stumbling across questions that had answers that really surprised me.This quiz book is a barrel of fun, lots of juicy tidbits (yeah, Monica is here), all the gossipy details you wish your history teacher had told you.My favorite part was the end, which has 20 questions about each o the presidents, including George W. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, fun, the best book for NY buffs
This is THE definitive book of New York City trivia. More than just informative and intelligent, it's truly fun. It's a great gift for an NYC smart aleck who thinks they know everything about the city, or for anyone who wants to learn a whole lot about what is, of course, the capital of the world. Apparently the author biked from Queens to Manhattan across the 59th Street bridge at an age when most kids wouldn't be allowed to walk to school on their own. So this is clearly a 40-year or so labor of love. Most of all, it's fun. A great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrate New York Trivia
Celebrate New York City with this book, one of the best ways to explore all of what is special about New York City! From the novice to the tourist, from the born and bred to the commuter who works in New York City or just for the curious planning a visit...this book has it all. Little known interesting facts will make your every day stroll down the block into a history lesson. Fun for the holidays to quiz your friends and family.

You won't be able to put it down. Test your own knowledge. Written in an easy reading style, yet thorough and detailed enough to challenge and entertain at the same time.

Enjoy!!!

Can you name the first six Blue Peter presenters? (A point for each.) The Prince of Wales pub in Highgate, north London, has held a weekly Tuesday night pub quiz for nearly 20 years. Its reputation precedes it: the quiz is widely acknowledged as one of the best in London, if not the country. What was surrendered to Lieutenant-General Tomoyuki Yamashita on February 15th, 1942? Now the regulars who set the quizzes bring you the Prince of Wales (Highgate) Pub Quiz Book. Even if you're stumped by some of the questions, this book is as much about the answers, which will enlighten and astonish readers in equal measure. What was unique about Alan Shepard's golf shot on February 6th, 1971? This exquisitely designed book promises to do for pub quizzes what Ben Schott did for lists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addicting!
Once I get started on this, it's hard to put away! Even the best movie trivia buffs will be challenged with the incredible detailed questions in this book!My daughter and I can play together and learn about each others' genres too.WONDERFUL book!

1-0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
I have to say I was very dissappointed when I recieved this book.It was missing the answer key, so the book is completely useless.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gimmicky fun
With 2500 questions about films of all years, genres and popularity levels how could this book be nothing but a must-have for any cinephile.Unfortunately, I have to rate it less-than-so because of -mainly- its difference with all the other trivia books. That is, its gimmicky electronic answering device.Call me old-fashioned, but I'd rather leaf through the pages in a trivia book to find an answer than rely on a device that eventually will need a battery replacement; that can break, leaving you answer-less; that makes beeping sounds whenever you input a question, or get a wrong or right answer, therefore being sort of a nuisance if you are in the vicinity of other book-readers, workers...etc.; that can be prone to more proofreading mistakes as evident in some answers that the machine was just plain wrong. After finding three wrong answers to questions that I clearly knew the answers for, I had no choice but to put in doubt all the answers to the questions I didn't know the answer for and was put off to even do any more questions. The majority of the cases were input mistakes, as the questions are multiple choice, and whoever was responsible for recording the lettered answers, put a B instead of a D and just screwed it up.So, I suggest to stick with the traditional answering format or do a very thorough checking of the answers in the electronic piece.

4-0 out of 5 stars Obsessed with Hollywood - Great Movie Trivia Product!!!
Obssessed With... Hollywood: Test Your Knowledge of the Silver Screen (Obsessed With) (Obsessed With...)

I'm so glad I finally got this movie trivia book!I passed over this book a few times over the holidays, but now that I've finally gotten myself a copy and taken time to read it / play with it, I'm wishing I would have gotten this earlier.I definitely could have seen giving this as a gift to my fellow movie junkies. And I would have certainly enjoyed playing this myself some more if I would have gotten it earlier.

This book is packed with very good film trivia questions, though not too difficult.Over my first couple of hours of playing I was at about %50.Definitely easy enough to keep my interest and challenging enough to joggle my memory.

The lower right corner houses an electronic answer box that randomly gives you question numbers to flip to.You also use this box to answer questions, and it gives you instant feedback and tracks your accuracy.

The book itself, while solid, could have been put together better. The bookstore had a few copies where the electronic answer box had broken free from the book.In addition, after playing for a while I've come to think the binding is too tight.A spiral binding would have made flipping through the questions easier.

Regardless, the content is very good and this thing is surprisingly addictive. If you love movie trivia and want something fun to kill a few hours, this will do it.

They've also got a similar book about Baseball which I also bought. Obsessed with...Baseball: Test Your Knowledge of America's Pastime (Obsessed With...) I would definitely look into this series for other topics. This may not be as cool for home use as some of the newer multimedia trivia games, like the various "Scene It" games Scene It? Movie Travel DVD Game.Still, this book is very portable and well designed with great content. At the price of around $16-$17, it's not a bad value.

Definitely give this one a try.

Enjoy!!!

Product Description
"Schott's Almanac" redefines the traditional almanac to present a record of the year just past and a guide to the year come. It is designed to be a practical and entertaining annual volume that tells the real stories of the year, from economic meltdown and the assassination of Benazir Bhutto to the England-less Euro 2008 and the Beijing Olympics, and from the American presidential elections and the Hollywood writers' strike to Bond 22, Quantum of Solace and the creation of artificial life. The section headings include: Chronicle; World; Society and Health; Sci, Tech, Net; Celebrity and Media; Music and Cinema; Books and Arts; Travel and Leisure; Money; Parliament and Politics; The Establishment; Sport; and, Ephemerides. In an age when information is plentiful but selection is rare, "Schott's Almanac" offers both the essential facts and the lucid analysis, combining the authority and accuracy of the "Economist" with the wit and vitality of "Have I Got News for You". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Endless Interest
Nearly every page of this book has something that can spark a conversation among my friends, and more important, inspire me to think more about the world around me.I particularly appreciate the index (which even lists itself as an item) so that my browsing can have more focus. The only item lacking would be a bibliography, but many of the items are in themselves enough to key me to the right sources for more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schott in the dark - A high caliber almanac
Slide-rule companies pretty much went out of business with the advent of computer age. Though in the Internet age the printed page is far from endangered, traditional reference works are. All the words of the massive bound volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, for which I paid $1,500 back in 1974, now come on DVDs thrown in for free with the purchase of some other computer program. The fabulously popular Wikipedia online is even beginning to rival Britannica in accuracy. And with data of every kind freely available on the Web, whither the yearly printed almanac? The "World Almanac and Book of Facts" or the "Information Please Almanac" now have a quaintness to them, almost as if someone published them year after year but had forgotten why.

So London-based Ben Schott decided to reinvent the yearly almanac. The result is "Schott's Almanac: 2007" ($25.95 in hardcover from Bloomsbury USA), designed especially for American readers (there are also British and German versions). In the brief introduction, the author writes, " 'Schott's Almanac' reflects the age in which it has been written: an age when information is plentiful, but selection and analysis are more elusive. ... 'Schott's Almanac' aspires to provide an informative, selective and entertaining analysis of the year. 'Schott's' is an almanac written to be read."

Superficially resembling the more traditional almanac, with familiar section titles like "books and arts" and "the States," "Schott's" is shorter (368 pages) and its content far quirkier. It's unlikely that years from now we will be driven to look up "street names, unusual" to find the "7 'wackiest' street names, according to a 2006 poll by Car Connection Web site." (A few of the selections, for the record: Psycho Path, in Traverse City, Mich.; Divorce Court, in Heather Highlands, Pa.; and, in Story, Alaska, Farfrompoopen Road, "the only road leading to Constipation Ridge.")

Oldsters beware, too. The print is minuscule and the overall tone decidedly hip. There are lots of fun lists (the "Hacker, Cracker, & Geek Speak" lexicon distinguishes among geeks, nerds, dweebs and dorks) but lots of serious talk as well, especially in the survey of the year that leads off the book. You'll find an official definition of genocide, a biography of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and a short article on Holocaust denial. Some of the sections (sports, the nation) are more prosaic than others (such as media and celebrity, which leads off with a comparison of the cover stars pictured on issues of People and US Weekly) but all in all Schott's lives up to its claim to be readable.

Odd corners abound. Here's a poem from Thomas Hood (1799-1845): "Dirty days hath September, / April, June and November, / From January up to May / The rain it raineth every day. / February hath 28 alone, / And all the rest have 31. / If any of them had two and 30 / They'd be just as wet and dirty."

Then there are the Ig Nobel prizes, for real research that seems pointless, with the 2005 winners in chemistry: "Edward Cussler and Brian Gettelfinger (University of Minnesota) for their tireless investigation into whether people swim faster in syrup or in water."

The "Oddest Book Title of the Year" award for 2005 goes to author Gary Leon Hill for "People Who Don't know They Are Dead: How They Attach Themselves to Unsuspecting Bystanders and What to Do About It."

Don't look for a review anytime soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Schott
Fans of Schott's Miscelany and follow on books will enjoy this super-sized (350+ pages) collection of somewhat timely, somewhat topical, thoroughly random information. From short biographies of Nobel Prize in Literature winners, to a discussion of why a traditional psuedonym for actors was retired (a porn starlet started using it as her screen name) to the winner of this year's Ernest Hemmingway look alike contest, to the body fat statistic of the president (16.8%), this book has everything you don't need to know.

Because the book can be picked up at a random page and enjoyed in doses of 1 sentence to 10 pages (actually, that is - I'd argue - how it *SHOULD* be enjoyed), it's perfect bathroom reading for the obscure-knowledge set. ... Read more
