4-0 out of 5 stars Asian Bites
My opinion about Asian Bites is extremely mixed. As I do with all my new cookbooks, the moment I got this one I started going through looking for recipes that I could make right away. I was a little disappointed when I only found a couple that I actually had all the ingredients in my kitchen.

Resigned, I began book marking recipes that I wanted to try and made a list that I needed to pick up at the supermarket. Again, I was stalled when I could only find about half of the things on my list. I began shopping around for the remainder of items but still couldn't find them all.

The majority of the dishes that I cooked up, even those that I had to make creative substitutions, were delicious. A handful of these recipes will become part of my everyday repertoire. However, due the difficulty of finding key ingredients in my community, most of the best dishes will have to be made for special occasions only.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT cookbook
This is a fabulous little cookbook. All of the recipes are easy and the directions are very, very clear. The photography is wonderful -- you really get excited about the prospects of making a particular dish. I've done the spicy tamarind shrimp and the curried sweet corn fritters so far (I've owned the book all of four days) and I've got plans to do the steamed shrimp dumplings this week. What's wonderful about this book is that it gives you some very new and different things to make without requiring you to invest hundreds of dollars in hard-to-find Asian ingredients. Most (though not all) of the ingredients will be readily available at a good market. And I live in New Hampshire! ... Read more

Product Description
Amish cooking has become ingrained into traditional American cooking. Chances are, growing up your grandmother or your mother prepared a dish or two that was based on a traditional Amish recipe and you didn't even know it. You just knew that you found it delicious. In my case it was the "Shoo Fly Pie" that my grandmother made when I was a young child. It was awesome! Later in life, I tried to find Shoo Fly Pie, and found that no one knew what I was talking about.

I asked my mother if she had the recipe and as luck would have it, my grandmother never wrote down any of her recipes. She had them all stored in her head. So from there the hunt was on. I finally traced the roots of my favorite dessert to the Amish, and that is where this book was born. I found that many of the great breads, cookies and dishes that my grandmother used to make, were actually Amish recipes! I thought everyone should try these great recipes, so I have put together a collection of 65 of my favorite Amish recipes in an easy to use eBook that anyone can afford. 4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, fresh recipes
Anyone looking for delicious appetizers, or light meal ideas, will find Mezze Modern a welcome addition to their cookbook library. Mezze Modern includes quick recipes for mezze (traditionally served as pre-dinner snacks) from the somewhat varied cusines of Turkey, Greece and Lebanon, most of them made with fresh, vegetarian ingredients (there are a few recipes calling for lamb, fish and poultry). I highly recommend this book for single people (like me) who crave bright, healthy and satisfying dishes which can be thrown together with a few ingredients, in very little time, and without too much effort. My copy is going to be dog-eared and EVOO stained in very short order.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Turkish cuisine
After hearing of the importance of Turkish cuisine, especially due to the influence of the Ottoman Empire, on public radio I purchased the "Sultans kitchen."I initially was interested in a good red lentil soup recipe and found that Turkish cuisine relied on fewer spices than Indian cooking and the combinations of ingredients inspired creativity. This cookbook is a great place to start learning about different flavors and how they are achieved in a fairly simple way. I have only just begun but am looking foward to trying many more of the intresting recipes and expand my flavor pallet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty Recipes, Clear Directions, Great Photos
I've been trying my hand at Turkish cooking off and on for about 3 years. I own four Turkish cookbooks: this one, two by Ayla Algar (Classical Turkish Cooking: Traditional Turkish Food for the American Kitchen, Complete Book Of Turkish Cooking) and one with recipes from a variety of chefs Turkey: Mediterranean Cuisine. Among them, I like this book the best, for several reasons.

(1) Very clear directions (even complex recipes are explained very clearly and steps follow each other in a logical, sensible order)
(2) Beautiful photos (though they are all of finished dishes -- there are no photos showing techniques, which is unfortunate)
(3) Recipes at a variety of skill/effort levels (e.g. easy recipes like Kisir, Ezogelin Çorbasi, and basic Köfte, along with harder ones like homemade baklava, manti, and a variety of dolma)
(4) Recipes usually produce very good results. I am a big recipe hack though I sometimes adjust them (for example, I add olive oil and tomato paste to my kisir, as most cooks use them and I think they add flavor)

5-0 out of 5 stars Sultan's Kitchen is my favorite
Whoever gave this cookbook 2 stars must be out of his mind. The cookbook is as good as the restaurant, definitely one of my favorites.

The recipes are easy to follow, with TONS of great great pictures and really wonderful descriptions. One of my favorites is the zucchini fritters with yogurt sauce. I could eat these every day! And the pilaf! My friends and family have loved every recipe I've tried from Ozcan Ozan's book. This is a must-have for anyone who loves to cook (and eat).

And if you're in Boston, stop into the restaurant.

4-0 out of 5 stars Savoring Turkey
This is a good all around, and reasonably priced cookbook.I just returned from Turkey and this book has many of the dishes that I loved when I was there.

2-0 out of 5 stars did not think the recipes looked easy
I was just about to buy Binnur's Turkish cookbook when I read a few reviews mentioning this cookbook as being GREAT! I figured since it was by a professional chef it would be better...I actually don't think the book is "easy" and it doesn't remind me of Turkish homecooking. A lot of Binnur's dishes are what my mother makes and at least for me, her recipes are a lot simpler and easier to make. ... Read more

Product Description

The best vegetarian cookbook, from the greatest vegetarian chef .

"This is not only the best vegetarian restaurant in Ireland, but one of the best restaurants of any kind." So states Frommers in their 2003 Guide to Ireland. Café Paradiso is an unassuming little restaurant in the heart of Cork City in Ireland yet it has been hailed far and wide as "the best vegetarian restaurant in Europe" and so is a contender for best vegetarian restaurant in the world. Fodors claims it "serves Mediterranean-style food, which is so tasty that even dedicated meat-eaters forget it's vegetarian". The reason for all this praise is the owner and chef, Denis Cotter, a quiet unassuming man, not unlike his restaurant, who, like all great chefs, is an obsessive. His obsession is to create the most exciting vegetarian dishes possible with the freshest possible produce, an ambition he has realized with remarkable success. In this book he serves up 140 recipes that make the very best of whatever vegetables are freshest at any given time of the year. Cotter's The Café Paradiso Cookbook has been hailed, in the Bridgestone Guide to Ireland, as "the best cookbook ever written by a working chef."

5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular
Having convinced my husband to eat vegetarian meals four times a week, I was determined that they be something special. This book made it easy. The recipes are straightforward and simple, but not simplistic, highlighting the taste of each featured vegetable. My husband was impressed -- and never missed his meat!

5-0 out of 5 stars Confused
This book is wonderful -- but I am very confused. It would appear from searching for Mr. Cotter's books that there aretwo books, The Café Paradiso Cookbook -- Vegetarian Cooking Season-by-Season (named above) and Café Paradiso Seasons -- Vegetarian Cooking Season-by-Season (pictured above). The reason I think that there are two books is that I recall a reference in Café Paradiso Seasons to the Café Paradiso Cookbook ...
So I give 5 stars to the book pictured. The recipes are delicious and managable. The text and background to therecipes make from charming reading -- and, of course, the photos are lovely ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Meatless Majesty
I've eaten often at Cafe Paradiso in Cork. Everytime I go I find something more innovative and more delicious. Even if you're not a vegetarian, and I'm not, you won't miss the meat in these beautifully planned meals. I've got several of Denis's cookbooks; this is the first one I've gotten in the US and having the measurement conversions is GREAT. There's a terrific range from straight forward and simple, to eye-dazzling and complex. Dig in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for thought
Cafe Paradiso is unquestionably one of the best restaurants in the whole of Ireland; it should be a priority on the itinerary of anyone planning a visit. Even diehard carnivores have loved this place: I've taken many of them there when they've visited me in Cork, and they always come away from the table singing its praises!

As a result, I can't recommend this cookbook enough for anyone interested in doing more with their veg than just a slab of butter and some garlic. This book is just a preview of what is by far a culinary trip through the best vegetable, fruit and dairy produce in all of the island.Of course, being that the restaurant is a Cork-based institution, some of the ingredients Denis specifies in the book (Gabriel cheese, for example) will only be available locally; however, there is always room for experimentation in the recipes and often times, Denis himself will do so, changing one or two ingredients of what we locals feel is a staple dish to try something new.Denis Cotter uses some interesting combinations (lemon and liquorice with basil, to name one) in his cooking, which is one of the main reasons that the restaurant has become the talk of the vegetarian world. The marriage of flavours found his recipes are so vivid and palatable that it's like eating a rainbow.Of course, the restaurant's wine list is a particular complement to the food!(All the more reason to book those tickets to Cork...)

4-0 out of 5 stars great restaurant, great cookery book
I love meat but really you don't miss the meat from these recipes, they are brilliant.Dennis Cotter uses a lot of squash and sweet potatoes, in my opinion overlooked in many cookery books.

The desserts are great too. ... Read more

The bazaar quarter of Istanbul is a mirror of the city itself: many-faceted and hectic, extraordinarily beautiful and chaotic at the same time.On the historic peninsula, centuries-old market halls and mosques share space with kiosks and new concrete buildings. Spacious stores with brightly lit window displays compete with tiny cluttered shops in dark alleys. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love books with maps
When I started reading the book, at the line 'The Grand Bazaar itself begins on the other side of the Egyptian bazaar,..' .. I had to stop reading. I couldnt resume without fixing this place on map. Had I flipped through the next few pages, I would see this nice blown up map of the bazaar showing details of the kind of merchandise sold in the streets.

Descriptions of travelling merchants using the bazaar for safekeeping sent me imagining to the extent of seal done in lacquer.

Imagine a real procession.

Some pictures are like that of a minaret lying on a table, view of a local bazaar through a hatch grilled window(so much easier to draw) will make you want to know more about them.
