2-0 out of 5 stars Designed for those who don't really want to learn the language
This book doesn't really give the fundamentals of the language or useful travelling phrases. It begins with content very similar to the CIA world fact book entry for Turkey and proceeds to give approximate english alphabet pronounciations of Turkish rather than explaining the pronounciation and rules of Turkish. These rules are few, vital, and can be explained in a couple of pages as other books do. The phrases chosen are clearly designed for government employees during a conflict; such things as "I am an American" and "I am your friend" as two of the first seven phrases given. This is followed by such gems as "Take Cover" and "Poison Gas".None of these phrases are needed in Turkey. This book isn't intended for the civilian traveler or for somebody who really wants to learn Turkish. In the words of another of their phrases "Watch Out!" ... Read more

Product Description
This is the book that teachers and others working with Turkish speaking children and young people have long needed. The author’s academic rigor combined with his insider’s view of the communities’ families, culture and work patterns affords readers real understanding of a community which has developed its own diaspora over the last half century but about which there is little research and scant learning support.

Part 1 outlines the backgrounds of the Turkish speakers - their immigration andemployment patterns - and examines their community and economic activities in some depth. Part 2 is devoted to the children’s language and the ways in which they use and acquire both Turkish and English in a range of real-life situations in their families and family businesses, and in their communities. From his analysis of these processes the author identifies what teachers need to know to develop these children’s language skills further at school and so enhance their academic attainment.

"Talking Turkey" will be essential reading for all those who work with Turkish speakers and will be of interest to teacher trainers, educational policy makers and to the Turkish communities. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Incorrect transliteration tables
This is an excellent book as an overview of the language. The problem is that the Latin transliterations for the Turkmen and Uzbek alphabets are entirely wrong from the third character to the end. I work in a library, and had consulted this book while cataloging some Uzbek and Kazakh books, when I noticed the error. This is not useful to librarians or anyone studying these languages. If there has been an errata published for the transliteration tables, it needs to be made readily available.

5-0 out of 5 stars great although a little strange
This is a dictionary organized by English words, with for each word the equivalent in each of the 8 Turkic languages. It's not a complete dictionary because it only has about 2000 words, but that is plenty for many purposes. Then in the back, it has an alphabetical listing of the words for each language (e.g. a listing of all the Azerbaijani words in alphabetical order, a listing of all the Kirghiz words in alphabetical order etc.It is nicely laid out, well printed and easy to use.The entries have very little information and are really just a list of words without any examples or grammatical explanations. Thus it will be most useful for those who already know at least one of these languages or are studying one.If you are interested in Turkic languages, this is the easiest way I know of to see vocabulary comparisons between them quickly. So just browsing in this book is quite interesting. The similarities (and differences) between these languages are fascinating. And if you already know one of these languages and are traveling somewhere where a different one of these languages is used, this book is extremely helpful and is not too large to take along. For many (most?) of these languages, it's hard to find a good dictionary (for instance there is only one Uzbek-English dictionary that I know of and it has a lot of limitations), so this book is a good equivalent.I have the hardback edition and one caution is it uses the Cyrillic script for languages such as Azerbaijani, Uzbek etc (with a phonetic transcription so you dont have to actually know how to read the Cyrillic script), but now these languages are switching over to Latin script. So it would be nice to have the words written in the official Latin script for that language because there are minor variants from one to the other. However this should not pose too many problems because the scripts are all fairly phonetic. This book is recommended to anyone interested in Turkic languages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those interested in linguisitcs!
The first time I saw this book was in Turkey, where I saw an earlier edition published by the government. This edition is much more complete, and contains several previously omitted languages. The vocabulary includedis pretty mundane, but the book is nevertheless an indispensible tool forthose interested in Turkic linguistics. The format is especially friendlyin this manner, with rows and columns to enable quick comparisons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greatly needed; needs larger vocabulary to become landmark
My greatest thanks to the authors for compiling an admirable comparative study of modern Turkic languages.I do recommend it.However, I would love to see a revision with a larger vocabulary base and guide to inflectedforms, conjugation paradigms and suffixes. There is such a tremendous lackof adequate published works regarding the languages of the newly emergingCentral Asian republics that I can't help but give this dictionary 4 stars. Expand the size and scope of this work, and I would gladly add the fifthstar.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cobanzade: A Crimean Tatar Poet and Turkic Scholar
Bekir Sidki Çobanzade (1893-1937) is a familiar name in the
Turkic world, especially among Crimean Tatars. Many remember
him as a poet who wrote nostalgically about his native Crimea
and as an authority on Turkic languages and literature who
taught at the University of Baku, Azerbaijan. In the midst of a
successful academic career, at the age of 44, Çobanzade
(pronounced cho-ban-za-de) was arrested by Communist authorities
for alleged subversive activities against the state, sentenced
to death and executed. Of course, his writings have outlived
him. His poetry, in articular, has continued to enjoy popularity
among Crimean Tatars in diaspora.

While there is considerable literature on Çobanzade, it remains
scattered in newspapers and journals published mostly in
Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey. Because Çobanzade's writings
have been relatively inaccessible to a wider audience, this
recent publication on Bekir Sidki Çobanzade is particularly
noteworthy and welcome.

The workincludes 84 poems and more than a dozen stories,
essays, and letters. Over one-third of the poems are appearing
in print here for the first time. It brings together in one
volume all of the known poems of Çobanzade in the original
Crimean Tatar, with Turkish translations provided by Otar. In
the first part of the book, the author gives a summary of
various publications on Çobanzade's life and work. Also included
are a bibliography of Çobanzade's professional writings and a
list of publications about him. The glossary of more than 2,000
Tatar words and Turkish equivalents, compiled by Otar, will be
especially helpful to those trying to study Çobanzade's poetry
and prose in the original.

Çobanzade poetry deals with a variety of topics: the beauty of
Crimean countryside; nostalgia for one's homeland; the courage,
honor and bravery of Crimean Tatars as well as their
vulnerability, ignorance and fatalist behavior. He was keenly
aware of the humiliation and deprivation his people suffered
under oppressive Russian policies over the years, and the
ensuing waves of exodus from Crimea. He regretted that his
people did not struggle to keep their land, but took the easy
way out, bowed to their fate and left their homeland.

In sum, Ismail Otar's book on Bekir Sidki Çobanzade is an
important publication in Crimean Tatar language and literature.
No doubt, it will lead to better understanding and appreciation
of the poet and the Turkic scholar. One hopes that Çobanzade's
writings will be translated into other languages, as he deserves
to be known by a wider audience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good intro to Ottoman Turkish
Rating this book really low by previous reviewers based on the mere fact that the book illustrates Turkish as spoken in the nineteenth century is not well founded. This book is one of the very few books written in English on pre-republic Turkish grammar available in the market. It can well serve as an introduction to Ottoman Turkish for people with some knowledge of Turkish or other Turkish languages. Modern Turkish reformed under Ataturk is different from Ottoman Turkish premarily in the writing system and lexical items. Namely, much Perso-Arabic influence was removed. This book, however, illustrates Perso-Arabic elements well, and it even has some reading passages. It can be indeed a fun read for those who are not satisfied with only knowing contemporary Turkish but also interested in probing into the past of the Turkish language.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware! This is reprint of a VERY old book.
The listing information needs to make it much clearer that this is certainly NOT Turkish "as spoken and written", which the blurb on the cover claims, and which the listed publication date of 2005 appears to confirm.

If you miss the single line in the description, you need to know that this volume is actually a reprint of a book from 1880, and which describes a much earlier version of Turkish from the Ottoman period, when Turkish was still written using the Arabic alphabet, which hasn't been used for it since 1928.Turkish has undergone very extensive linguistic reforms since then, and the language used today is vastly different from what is described here.

This quaint and antiquated version of Turkish will get you a lot of quizzical and perplexed looks if you try to use it today.(Imagine trying to speak Elizabethan English to a taxi driver in London, and you'll get the idea.)

I ordered this book thinking I'd add it to my library -- but when I received it and discovered how archaic it was, I sent it back. The listing information on this page should have made it much clearer.

1-0 out of 5 stars this language is not turkish
I dont know who this author is but this language is not turkish. it is arabic. how did they publish this book under the name "turkish grammar"?
Unbelievable!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars learning turkish
Very good turkish grammar. Probably is not the best for people that have the first contact with the language. It makes several comparisons with the old arabic/persian forms and modern turkish. Sometimes difficult to interpretate. Good for someone that already knows turkish. ... Read more
