Product Description
Tortoises, terrapins and turtles belong to the oldest surviving reptile lineage. They have been around for 220 million years, and witnessed the rise and fall of the dinosaurs.

Africa has a rich diversity of these reptiles, known collectively as chelonians. Tortoises are found in forests and deserts, savannah and fynbos; terrapins inhabit marshes, rivers, lakes and ponds; and sea turtles swim in the oceans of Africa, coming ashore to nest on certain beaches.

This authoritative field guide to the tortoises, terrapins and turtles of Africa is richly illustrated with color photographs that make for easy identification of 46 chelonian species (some only recently described); it provides accessible, up-to-date information and distribution maps; and it examines how chelonians have adapted to their environments. The book provides an overview of chelonian origins, anatomy and biology, their conservation status and the threats to their survival posed by the destruction of their habitats by man. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The best tortoise book for South African readers
After many years of searching for a book on tortoises which is relative to the South African environment, this book appears on the bookshelves. It covers a wide range of subjects with many clear, colourful photographs. Ikeep a number of the Padloper and Angulata species which have kept meentertained over the years and this book has been "my bible" whenit comes to looking up information on them, such as: How to treat an unwelltortoise and information on breeding and the numbering system for keepingtrack of them. This book is a must for anyone who has tortoises as pets. ... Read more

Product Description
Madagascar has a rich and diverse reptile fauna including several species of chelonians that are found nowhere else. It is home to such spectacular species as the Radiated Tortoise, Astrochelys radiata, the Spider Tortoise, Pyxis arachnoides, and the Ploughshare Tortoise, Astrochelys yniphora; which is considered to be the world?s rarest tortoise and one of the most endangered reptiles. The Tortoises and Turtles of Madagascar is the first book to cover all the living and extinct chelonians of Madagascar. This book is an authoritative and comprehensive guide covering every known aspect of their natural history. Recent field studies that have been carried out by the author and others to provide a better understanding of these species? ecology are synthesised in this publication. Practical species accounts provide accurate details of species identification, distribution, ecology and conservation, and are complemented by numerous beautiful photographs of Malagasy tortoises and turtles in the wild. Up-to-date information on the status of their populations is also presented, and there are details on the best sites to observe tortoises and turtles in Madagascar.Currently all extant endemic species of tortoises and turtles of Madagascar are threatened and the rapidity with which chelonian populations have declined in Madagascar underscores the need for equally rapid action to protect them. The Tortoises and Turtles of Madagascar outlines the challenges to chelonian conservation in Madagascar and the approaches developed to date to facilitate their recovery. This book will not only introduce readers to the fascinating world of Malagasy chelonians but will also raise awareness and support to ensure that they are preserved for the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book but too expensive
the information are good but not exaustive. I've bought this book to learn about G. radiata. The information about this species are not satisfactory. The habitat of the tortoises are not detailed explaned. There is a section about Ynifora and extinct giant tortoises. Furthermore, This is the first book about Tortoises of Madagascar. Good choice and a must-have for astrochelys breeder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Redfoot / Yellowfoot book ever
I have been a hobbiest for the better part of 30 years. I have had several small breeding projects from redfoot tortoise to aquatic turtles and have collected a large library on the subject. I have never encountered a more informative and beautifully illustrated reptile husbandry book as this one. From it's natural history to a complete guide, to the proper care and breeding of this magnificent reptile, this book covers it all. The photographs are great. The redfoot tortoise is without a doubt one of the most beautiful of all tortoises and this book illustrates that fact well. I particularly appreciated the chapters about the authors' enclosures and environmental controls and the methods she uses. If you are considering a breeding project or just love these beautiful animals, this book is a must. Not to mention the price is a no brainer! oh, and sales help injured Gopher Tortoise in FL !!
