Caritas began its activities in Ukraine in 1991, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Prior to the liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church by Soviet authorities in 1946, Caritas as an organization was not present in Ukraine. Eventually with the establishment of Caritas organizations throughout Ukraine, social and development or animation programs have been developed and the activities of Caritas have been broadened from its initial work of distributing humanitarian aid from the West. Early in the Christian era, a series of invaders (Goths, Huns, Avars) overran the Ukrainian steppes, and in the 7th century the Khazars included much of Ukraine in their empire. The Ukrainians themselves can be traced to Neolithic agricultural tribes in the Dnepr and Dnestr valleys. The Antes tribal federation (4th-7th century) represented the first definitely Slavic community in the area. In the 9th century, a Varangian dynasty from Scandinavia established itself at Kiev. Having freed the Slavs from Khazar domination, the Varangians united them in the powerful Kievan Rus. Thus, the Ukrainians, Russians, and Belarussians originated from a single nationality that formed the backbone of Kievan Russia Following Yaroslav's reign (1019-54), which marked the zenith of Kiev's power, Kievan Rus split into principalities, including the western duchies of Galich (see

In the 14th cent. the site, then under Lithuanian control, became a Crimean Tatar fortress and trade center called Khadzhi-Bei. In 1764 it passed to the Turks, who built a fortress (Yenu-Duniya) to protect the harbor. It was captured by the Russians in 1789. By the Treaty of Jassy in 1792, Turkey ceded the region between the Dnestr and the Bug (including Odessa) to Russia, which rebuilt Odessa as a fort, commercial port, and naval base. The city that developed around the fort grew rapidly as the chief grain-exporting center of Ukraine; its importance was further enhanced with the coming of the railroad in the second half of the 19th cent. It was a free port from 1819 to 1849, and in 1866 it was linked by rail with Kiev, Kharkov, and the Romanian city of Jassy. Industrialization began in the latter part of the 19th cent. Potemkin.

Of Prince Svyatoslav, Leo records that he is "ardent, brave, daring and active." When the Byzantine Emperor suggested that he retreat from Moesia (present-day Bulgaria), which he had occupied, the Prince replied that "if the Romeans (Byzantines) do not reimburse him (for his damages), then they should leave Europe, where they do not belong, and move to Asia." When the Emperor sent another proposal, Prince Svyatoslav retorted even more sharply:

Extractions: SCOUTING IN THE UKRAINE While Lord Baden-Powell successfully built the natural interests and responses of youth into an organized worldwide youth movement, it was the Founder of Ukrainian Scouting, Dr. 0. Tysovsky, who adapted the universal Scout principles to the needs and interests of Ukrainian youth. Unlike other Scout organizations of the world Ukrainian Scouting UKRAJINSKY PLAST-came into being to fulfill specific national aims. Born in 1911, during the decade of great social and political upheavals in Europe, Ukrainian Scouting underwent great trials in the first half-century of its existence thus developing typical and unique features of its own. The first Scout troops were formed in the largest city of Western Ukraine, Lviv in 1911. The Movement spread rapidly to the other cities and towns and by 1913 the first Supreme Scout Council had been formed and the first textbook published. Shortly after its founding, the organization had to face the dreadful storms of World War I, which brought about the collapse of the two powers occupying the Ukrainian territory, the Austro-Hungaria monarchy and the Czarist Russia. The indomitable will of the Ukrainian people for national freedom clearly crystallized itself in the formation of the Ukrainian National Republic in 1918. Subsequent years witnessed a great up swing in the Scout Movement, as it spread into the towns and communities where it had been previously unknown, mainly in the central provinces of the Ukraine. Hundreds of boys, inspired by the noble ideal of Scouting, volunteered to join the armed forces fighting on several fronts in defense of freedom and independence. Many gave their lives for the very principles of Scouting, service to God and Country.
