But as these children of immigrants took their places in American society, many deliberately identified with groups that remained excluded. Despite their success, Jews embraced resistance more than acculturation, preferring marginal status to assimilation. The stories of Al Jolson, Felix Frankfurter, and Arnold Rothstein are told together to explore this paradox in the psychology of American Jewry. All three Jews were born in the 1880s, grew up around American Jewish ghettos, married gentile women, entered the middle class, and rose to national fame. All three also became heroes to the American Jewish community for their association with events that galvanized the country and defined the Jazz Age. Rothstein allegedly fixed the 1919 World Seriesan accusation this book disputes. Frankfurter defended the Italian anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti. Jolson brought jazz music to Hollywood for the first talking film, The Jazz Singer , and regularly impersonated African Americans in blackface. Each of these men represented a version of the American outsider, and American Jews celebrated them for it.

Shortly thereafter, she was cast to star in The War Between Us, a feature film on the WWII internment of Japanese-North Americans, thus re-enacting a key episode in her own community's history. Extractions: To a Friend by Tamar Nordenberg There was a time when only one brand of aspirin existed, and its manufacturer's 1920s ad campaign was intended to assure consumers that aspirin would not damage their hearts. But we now know that aspirin can affect the heart. Today, aspirin is actually prescribed under its various generic and name brands for its heart- healthy effects. "DOES NOT AFFECT THE HEART." That assurance in the Bayer aspirin ads of the 1920s spoke to concerns of the day that some drugs could damage the life-sustaining organ. Today it's clear that aspirin can affect the heart. Ironically, it turns out the effects are beneficial, so much so that some aspirin ads now carry the American Heart Association's seal to highlight the cardiovascular effects. In fact, of the 80 million aspirin tablets Americans take each day, most are taken not for everyday aches and pains but to reduce the risk of heart disease, according to aspirin manufacturer Bayer Corp. It was founded in 1877 from the bequest of Stephen Mitchell, a tobacco merchant. As well as modern holdings of reference material, it has extensive collections of rare books and manuscripts and a number of special collections, many of relevance to the study of the USA and Canada, particularly in relation to the history of Glasgow and its trading links with North America. The Glasgow City Archives was established in 1964, initially to archive and catalogue the records of Glasgow Corporation; subsequently other records were added, including official and business records, and family and estate papers. Modern printed collections Present holdings, well in excess of 1 million books, are rich in North American studies materials. The American literarure holdings, while not very extensive, are quite strong in poetry and in 19th- and 20th-century editions, including the 2nd edition of Leaves of Grass (1856). The US history holdings contain some materials on slavery and on US immigration, especially of Scots. Much of the genealogical material is on open access. There are many volumes on cinema and on the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography. Reference material includes US telephone directories and patents from 1931 onwards. Some US manufacturing and commerical directories are held. The library also subscribes to a range of current general and scholarly journals from North America.

Davis to Lucretia Mott, 1849, regarding the debate over the employment of 2 female clerks in a retail store, with satirical drawings and dramatic skit that go with these letters; letters from Margaret Garrison Phoutridies to her family, about her work in a knitting mill, labor unions and labor organizing, 1919-1920.
