4-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book.
One of the greatest problems with writing a book about underwater photography is that of equipment. Firstly, there are those specially made amphibious cameras - amongst which the only underwater SLR was not a huge success. Then we have the usual - and very extensive, range of ordinary surface cameras and their many different lenses of all shapes and sizes. Of course, none of latter work underwater - so we need an even larger range of housings and ports (windows through which the camera can see) to accommodate whichever system you are prepared to put together. Then, of course, we have the digital camera and we start all over again! So for those books claiming to be a complete guide to underwater photography - you know it just isn't possible.

Thankfully this author has a different approach to the overall subject and whether you have the most or least expensive equipment, there are lessons here to be learned by the amateur and professional alike.

Instead of getting bogged down with equipment that only this author possesses, Charles Seaborn discusses - with great clarity, the general topics which beset anyone attempting to take either the simplest or most complicated photograph underwater. The subjects of; Environmental factors, planning & technique, Equipment, lighting close-ups, medium angle lenses, wide angles and composition are al there and I defy anyone reading this book for the first time "not" to learn something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Balanced, focused on digital still UW photography
I have read this book cover to cover and consider myself an intermediate level photographer, learning to apply principles to UW.Nice comparisons of same object and how different techniques such as depth of field or position of primary and fill strobes change appearance.I found the advice very practical and understandable when contemplating the composition of the different types of shots.

4-0 out of 5 stars Underwater Photography - Great Book!!!
This book is great!!!I can't wait to be able to use this on my next vacation

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
This book offers a nice general introduction to underwater photography, and is relatively current with its equipment discussions, etc.It offers a nice introduction to both photography in general (f-stops, exposure, etc) and the special considerations you'll face when shooting underwater (color changes with depth, strobe usage, etc). While it's targeted to those with full underwater camera setups (its discussion of strobe placement is great), it would also be useful if you have a simple housing for a point-and-shoot.It's full of great recommendations on improving the quality of your photos, and some of the tips have already helped me make better shots. ... Product Description
EYES UNDER THE WATER

When Steve Waterman left home in 1964, he was looking for the most exciting job the U.S. Navy had to offer. So Waterman became an underwater photographer, joining an elite group that numbered only fifteen men in the entire navy--men always on call for unusual and interesting assignments.

Yet it was the time Waterman spent in Vietnam with Underwater Demolition Team-13 that deserves special respect. Existing in a state of adrenaline driven alertness, UDT-13 men carried out their harrowing missions. Stealthily, silently they crept through Vietnam's waterways, never knowing if the next bend in the river concealed VC patiently waiting to spring a fiery, murderous ambush.

Employing the wit and unvarnished honesty that got him into trouble more than once during his thirteen years in the navy, Waterman unfolds a compelling tale of an ordinary sailor who chose to serve his country during one of the most controversial, challenging times in its history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, Highly recommend "Just A Sailor"
I served 2 years in the Army and always wondered what it would be like to serve in the Navy. Steve does a great job of telling what it was like for him and he was more than Just A Sailor. The men I would call heroes are modest and tell the true story without any falsehoods. From reading this book and knowing Steve, he fits the definition of a hero very well. I enjoyed the humor, the adventure and learned some about the Navy and diving.

Being part of a very select group, Navy Combat Photographer, with only 15 in the Navy at any one time, Steve does much more ranging from underwater salvage operations, serving with elite UDT teams in Vietnam, treasure hunting, commercial diving, and more.

Join the Navy and see the world certainly fits. Steve tells of going from his home in Maine to his training in the Navy, becoming a highly skilled diver trained for very specialized operations and equipment and serving in Vietnam, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific read!!!
I've just finished reading "Just a Sailor" and it's one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read.Mr. Waterman has captured the essence of underwater photography to the highest level. His dry wit and humor made this book a treasure to read and I'll highly recommend it to others.Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Any Sailor's Tale of Vietnam!
There are some authors who seem to make themselves out as bigger than life heroes and embellish their memoirs in order to make a good tale. However, author Steven Waterman understates his experiences with humor, honesty, and an almost conversational style of writing in his autobiography "Just A Sailor." His story is about his experiences as a Navy underwater photographer. He also engages in underwater salvage, and even combat in Vietnam.

The way the book starts off with the young Waterman getting arrested for underage drinking and then almost dropping out of school, shows that the author was willing to share his personal experiences--blemishes and all! He does a great job of taking the reader though his boot camp training and all the way through the end of his enlistment. Having been in the Army, I found his story to be very interesting, as I had no idea what life in the Navy was like and certainly not the kind of stuff for what he was trained for.

This book is often very funny at times, as the author does not take his life or the Navy, all that serious. The reader will enjoy the story and find Waterman's personality endearing. You will get to like this guy as you follow him through his Navy career. The book itself is very readable. It is a good tale and it is told well. This book is now available in paperback by Ballantine Books

4-0 out of 5 stars Just A Sailor : A Navy Diver's Story
I really enjoyed the author's life story. He did many interesting things in his career and as a civilian. The book is very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a Sailor ... NOT!!!!!
From the brown water of Vietnam to the blue of the Caribbean and the cold water off New England, Waterman's adventures both entertain and educate us about the "other" Navy, the Navy of Special Warfare, salvage divers and the underwater photographer. This book is definitely a page turner. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a complete Guide.
If someone published a "Complete Guide" to, say, Whales you would expect it to contain everything you ever wanted to know about those splendid mammals. In the same way, I expected "The Complete Guide to Photographing Underwater Wonders" to contain everything that a complete guide to underwater photography should contain. But of course it doesn't.

Just as soon as this book arrived through my letterbox the disappointments set in.Firstly, it was far too thin to be a complete guide to anything and it soon became obvious that the author does not understand what the word "complete" means. The chapter on equipment is a good example; This was nothing more than an overview of a few underwater camera systems which the author owns. The point being, the equipment I use doesn't even get a mention - and thus the book is NOT a complete guide.Even the prices quoted for underwater housings are woefully inaccurate.

The only thing which is "complete" about this book is that it completely fails to live up to it's own title. A few good photos and a few good tips for those who are starting out - but, otherwise, nothing more from this product which is instantly forgettable.
