5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful introduction to a Kingdom that many children would love to know more about!
Many kids think that the United Kingdom is only made up of one or two countries, but it is really made up of four parts spread out over two islands. The largest island, Great Britain, is home to England, Scotland, and Wales, and the smaller island, Ireland, is home to Northern Ireland. If you look at the map in this book you can easily see where they are in relation to one another and you can also see where its mountains, highlands, capital cities, and smaller cities are located. If you lived in the United Kingdom, you would not be very far from water as "seas lie to the north, east, and west."In addition to lakes, rivers, and seas, each country can lay claim to many mountains and valleys.

The climate is "cool and mild" with rainfall scattered throughout the year.If you like your weather hot, you probably would not care for this section of the world as "Britain rarely has long stretches of hot, sunny days."You'll learn a bit of the UK's history, which dates back thousands of years. You'll learn how the modern day Kingdom actually became united. The full name of the UK is actually the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Bet you didn't know that! You'll probably learn many things you weren't aware of.You'll learn about the Royal Family, the ethnic makeup of its people, the British English language, where the people live, you'll learn about their transportation system, their holidays, what they eat, when children start school, you'll get to see what their favorite sports are, what they do for fun, and you'll learn many more interesting things.Have you seen break-dancer George Sampson in action? He was on "Britain's Got Talent."You might want to check him out on YouTube!

This is a wonderful introduction to a Kingdom that many children would love to know more about. It was a very interesting armchair visit to the UK and I especially enjoyed the well-chosen photographs on every page that lent a nice flavor to the book (including the one of haggis). There are numerous small sidebars that also offer up interesting vignettes about the UK.For example, we learn about Boudicca, the Celtic queen and how "her forces attacked the Romans."In the back of the book are some "Fast Facts, an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources.OK, let's see if you recognize this name and know its meaning: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.Whew! If not, you might want to take a look at this book! ... Product Description

Recently, policy debate and comparative research on old-age pensions have focused on the financial sustainability of pension systems in the face of demographic change. This study, however, also takes into account distributional effects involved in pension system structures. Theoretical, institutional and empirical analyses are combined to form a comprehensive framework for evaluating financial sustainability and distributional effects of the pension systems implemented in Germany and the United Kingdom.

Along with projections of demographic trends and future public pension expenditure, the empirical results on old-age incomes and their distribution allow for identifying a number of reform options for each pension system to improve their financial or distributional results.

Product Description
The port city of Liverpool, England, is home to one of the oldest Black communities in Britain. Its members proudly date their history back at least as far as the nineteenth century, with the global wanderings and eventual settlement of colonial African seamen. Jacqueline Nassy Brown analyzes how this worldly origin story supports an avowedly local Black politic and identity--a theme that becomes a window onto British politics of race, place, and nation, and Liverpool's own contentious origin story as a gloriously cosmopolitan port of world-historical import that was nonetheless central to British slave trading and imperialism.

This ethnography also examines the rise and consequent dilemmas of Black identity. It captures the contradictions of diaspora in postcolonial Liverpool, where African and Afro-Caribbean heritages and transnational linkages with Black America both contribute to and compete with the local as a basis for authentic racial identity. Crisscrossing historical periods, rhetorical modes, and academic genres, the book focuses singularly on "place," enabling its most radical move: its analysis of Black racial politics as enactments of English cultural premises. The insistent focus on English culture implies a further twist. Just as Blacks are racialized through appeals to their assumed Afro-Caribbean and African cultures, so too has Liverpool--an Irish, working-class city whose expansive port faces the world beyond Britain--long been beyond the pale of dominant notions of authentic Englishness. Dropping Anchor, Setting Sail studies "race" through clashing constructions of "Liverpool." ... Read more

Product Description
Music, drugs, clubbing and travel--this is the popular image of what it means to be young. However, young people's lives are also busy with the everyday realities of home, school and work. The engaging essays in Cool Places explore the dichotomy of youthful lives by addressing the issues of representation and resistance in youth culture today.

Using first-person vignettes to illustrate the wide-rangingexperiences of youth, the authors consider how the media has imaginedyoung people as a particular community with shared interests and howyoung people resist these stereotypes, instead creating their ownindependent representations of their lives. Drawing examples from ganglife in Santa Cruz, CA, techno music and ecstacy in Germany, toexperiences at home with sibling rivalry, loitering on streets andseeking employment, the contributors introduce the ideas of cultureand space--identity politics, gender, race, class, disability, sexuality and power--through a context directly relevant to livedexperience.

Cool Places brings together the latestthinking within social, cultural and feminist studies to focus uponthe complexities of youth cultures and their spatial representationsand interactions. ... Read more
