Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Uruguay," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Uruguay in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Uruguay when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Uruguay, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: A forced disappearance occurs when a person is secretly imprisoned or killed by agents of a state or other organization, but the organization does not admit that they have carried out this act, thereby placing the victim outside the protection of law. According to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which came into force on 1 July 2002, when committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed at any civilian population, a "forced disappearance" qualifies as a crime against humanity, and thus is not subject to a statute of limitation. On December 20, 2006, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. Often forced disappearance implies murder. The victim in such a case is first kidnapped, then illegally detained, often tortured, then killed, and the corpse is then hidden. Typically, a murder will be surreptitious, with the body disposed of in such a way as to prevent it ever being found, so the person apparently vanishes. The party committing the murder has deniability, as there i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=686148 ... Read more

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Wars Involving Uruguay, War of the Triple Alliance, Uruguayan Civil War, Siege of Paysandú, Revolution of the Lances, Battle of Jaguarão. Excerpt: The War of the Triple Alliance, also known as the Paraguayan War, and in Paraguay as the Great War, was fought from 1864 to 1870 between Paraguay and the allied countries of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. It caused more deaths than any other South American war and particularly devastated Paraguay, killing most of its male population. Several theories exist regarding the origins of the war. In essence, Argentine revisionism and the Paraguayan traditional view give a preponderant role to the interests of the British Empire. The alternative view emphasizes the aggressive policy of marshal Solano López towards River Plate matters. The war began in late 1864 with combat operations between Brazil and Paraguay; from 1865 on, it can already be referred to as the War of the Triple Alliance. The start of the war has been widely attributed to causes as varied as the after-effects of colonialism in Latin America, the struggle for physical power over the strategic Río de la Plata region, Brazilian and Argentine meddling in internal Uruguayan politics, British economic interests in the region, and the expansionist ambitions of Paraguayan president Francisco Solano López. Paraguay had had boundary disputes and tariff issues with Argentina and Brazil for many years. The outcome of the war was the utter defeat of Paraguay. After the Triple Alliance defeated Paraguay in conventional warfare, the conflict turned into a drawn-out guerrilla-style resistance that devastated the Paraguayan military and civilian population. The guerilla war lasted until López was killed on March 1, 1870. One estimate places total Paragu... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=554256 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Yesteryears in Uruguay
This is an interesting book which reflects the first-hand impressions of an English immigrant to Uruguay. Highly recommended for all those interested in the history or rural life in South America's southern cone. Though somewhat disjointed, the book is a detailed, often-humorous outlook on how a foreigner must have felt when confronted with local idiosincrasies and habbits. A sort of 'Hitchhiker's Guide to Uruguay' of the early 1900s, it takes the reader through a variety of situations which the author himself experienced and how he often muddled his way out of them. An entertaining read, though the value of the editor's long and rather boring prologue is highly questionable. ... Read more

Product Description
The murgas are troupes of performers, musicians, writers, and creators who, during Montevideo's Carnival, perform on the tablados, temporary stages built in the neighborhoods of Uruguay's capital city each year. Throughout the period of Uruguay's subjection to a brutal dictatorship and in the following era of "democratization," the murgas, envisioned originally as popular theater, were transformed into a symbol of social resistance, celebrated by many and perceived by others as menacing and subversive.

Focusing on the cultural practices of the lower classes and more specifically on the processes and productions of the murgas, Gustavo Remedi's Carnival Theater is a deeply thoughtful consideration of Uruguayan society's identity crisis and subsequent redefinition in the wake of the authoritarian-bureaucratic-technocratic regimes of the 1960s. A revealing work of cultural criticism, the book proposes a new set of criteria for the interpretation and critique of national culture.

Gustavo Remedi is assistant professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Trinity College.

Amy Ferlazzo teaches at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. ... Read more

Product Description
The most ambitious round of multilateral trade negotiations since the formation of the GATT was formally launched in Punta del Este, Uruguay in 1986. With more than 100 nations participating in the "Uruguay Round" negotiations, complex economic problems and difficult political realities made reaching international accord on major trading issues a long and arduous process. The three-volume set presents a history of these negotiations, portraying how participating nations reached their current positions on the proposed major changes in trade in agriculture and textiles, adoption of rules for trade in services, review of existing trade regulations, increased protection of intellectual property rights and the liberalization of the market for many important products. The set contains information which should be useful for all involved in international trade. Legal practitioners, business executives, academics and government officials seeking to understand the position of the important players and grasp the implications of the final agreement should find this factually-objective and politically-neutral account of the negotiations a useful resource. This chapter covers the functioning of the GATT system. The complete set and the three volumes are also available, as are other individual chapters, allowing for the purchase of only that information in which a customer has a specific interest. ...
