Coastal zones form a huge variety of natural environments, providing rich resources to humans. They are the place where active interaction occurs between land-based activities and ocean environments. They have attracted human population to form mega cities and economic developments on the coasts, which in turn has caused tremendous pressures on the natural environment. The Asia and Pacific region is a center of such dynamics. It is home to the world s largest region of coral reefs and mangroves. It accommodates two-thirds of the world s human population and its economic activities have the highest growth rate in the world. Ongoing degradation of the environment resulting from deforestation, desertification, and over-harvesting is becoming a matter of great concern, as floods and droughts occur as a result of this degradation. The Asia-Pacific also forms part of the Pacific Rim of Fire and is, therefore, vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, as the world is aware of after the Sumatra earthquake tsunami on 26 December 2004. Threats of global environmental change such as climate change and sea-level rise will superpose on such problems. Therefore, appropriate policies and measures are needed for the coastal management, both for the local and global trends. Going Deep
This is an extraordinarily well researched, well-presented, and masterfully edited work on the psychology and management of diversity. The authors have taken the subject well beyond the surface rhetoric and HR parlance of 'valuing diversity'--indeed, they have driven right up to the door of bias and prejudice and sped on through to a deeper level of understanding, by credibly and convincingly making the case for why diversity is good for business. I have used this work in my university classes and recommend it to others. The case references are extremely useful in helping doubters see the 'real time' benefits of enlightened thinking in a complex and conflicted world.

Dive into this ocean of knowledge!
In "Heal the Ocean", Rod Fujita details the catastrophic state of our oceans as a result of global warming, overfishing, pollution, deep sea mining, military interests, and poor land use. More importantly, he describes the many ways that we can work together to protect and restore ocean ecosystems. As somebody who loves the ocean but has never before taken a marine biology course, I appreciate Fujita's accessible writing style. Thank you, Rod Fujita, for this educational and inspiring book.

Dr. Rod Fujita does not write with the detached voice of a scientist, although he is one.He writes with the passion of a champion for the cause of sustainable development and he believes it is possible.
Some fisheries such as California's near shore waters collapsed through over fishing. The solution: California's Marine Life Management Act of 1999 that strives to protect whole ecosystems through marine reserves where no fishing is allowed.Fujita calls it "fish in the bank."

To reverse environmental damages, rivers can be returned to their natural states without levees and dams and with natural features such as wetlands and trees on their banks so that fish and wildlife can return to their intricate patterns of feeding and spawning in habitats that sustain.

Somewhat interesting but inconclusive
Change at Work is based on a study, commissioned by the National Planning Association's Committee on New American Realities (NAR), to evaluate and comprehend changing employment/organizational practices.The study also looked at the impacts of such changes on the employees of the companies reviewed - particularly the skills and adaptation needed to weather this storm. Change at Work is divided into six chapters, each individually authored by NAR committee members.Consequently, one of the main problems with the book is that it does not flow particularly well. The central theme of Change at Work is that the traditional methods of managing employees and developing skilled workers inside companies are eroding, leaving a new employment relationship in which the attachment between employees and employers has declined.Jobs demand more of their workers but offer them less, and these workers now bear more of the risks of doing business through reduced job security and contingent pay (pay based on performance). In addition, what Peter Cappelli calls the "traditional work arrangements," where companies developed skilled employees and worked to keep them, are quickly disappearing.Pressure on the companies for better performance is being applied from foreign competitors and investors and is causing these companies to explore restructuring to cut out "fat."This "fat" has often been interpreted to mean the companies' employees, who have found themselves to be the unfortunate victims of the now famous concept called "downsizing." The strengths of Change at Work are in the chapters contributed by Cappelli.In addition, the book contains an interesting and thorough variety of data, surveys, and other references, although some may not like their breadth or loose assembly. Unfortunately, Change at Work balances its strengths with several weaknesses.The book claims it is the result of a study, but it is actually more of a history lesson with limited background.It is also not particularly useful as a management tool, and may not even be considered interesting by most managers or employees. The book lacks a solid conclusion to the theme, with the exception that employee/employer relationships will become worse before they improve.Change at Work provides several other useless conclusions as well.Examples include the findings that employees need more skills in the new system (which begs the question-at what point throughout business evolution have employees never needed new skills?); managing these issues will be an enormous challenge; and change at work will continue.Big surprises.The variety of data sources and timeframes simply tossed together leaves the reader hoping that the authors will use them to point to some obvious conclusion or develop their own, but in the last paragraph they resign and state they are divided. The currently strong economy and low unemployment rate, albeit temporary, has given employees an opportunity to strike back in the form of being more selective, demanding better compensation packages, etc.We should not ignore the benefits of corporate restructuring as mentioned in Change at Work.Restructuring has given organizations much more flexibility in accomplishing their goals, has empowered employees, and has given them the autonomy that the traditional model could not.

Must read for students and new managers.
Change at Work is a must read for high-school students, college students, and those seeking careers in management.Cappelli has a no nonsense approach with detailing those issues impacting our careers, the work environment, and the future.For those wondering if a technical or college education is worthwhile, Cappelli gives you good reasons for furthering your education.Cappelli and his co-authors do an outstanding job detailing those issues and circumstances faced by today's workers and managers of all business, i.e., corporate America, government agencies and other nonprofit entities, and the smallest of ma-and-pa companies. Cappelli does not offer good solutions for any of the issues he raises in this work.Unfortunately for professionals and management already in the work force, Change at Work offers no new knowledge.

Change at Work is a commissioned study by the Committee on New American Realities that uses available information in an attempt to understand changing employment practices, changing organizations, and evolving employment relationships.The issues discussed in the book are nationwide workplace trends that have important ramifications for employees, employers, and the U. S. economy.

Change at Work is definitely a scholarly work that must be read in manageable, small portions because of the poor linking of chapters and poor data presentation.Fortunately, the final and concluding chapter of this book makes some sense out of the previous six chapters.

The editor tells us that the book was outlined by the group of authors, then individual authors took responsibility for each chapter.The editor also says "the authors made extensive comments on each others chapters along the way." (14).I have no doubt that the authors made comments on each chapter.I only wish they had taken the time to focus these comments on the transition between and the linking of the chapters and the data presentation.A consistent chapter format that used a conclusion or summary section at the end of each chapter would have facilitated the transition and linking of the chapters.This type of section at the end of each chapter could have solidified the authors' conclusions after the data purge that occurs in each chapter.Each data source pertains to a different time period and means of data collection.Some sources use percentage, while others use raw numbers.The authors do a poor job of linking the data; hence, the net effect is confusion to the reader.The authors would have made the book easier to read by using more graphical representation and detailing the significant data necessary to support their arguments.

The one strength of this book is the editor's ability to bring most of the significant findings throughout the book into a logical concluding chapter that is easy to understand and flows quite well.Each of the previous chapters is referenced directly or implicitly as the editor makes sense out of the book.

The authors are definitely working on a timely topic that most people in industry can relate to.Personally, I started working for my current employer, a global consumer products company, a year or two after they went through a large downsizing period.Since employment, I have seen this trend continue in the supervisory level.This is in alignment with the authors data that shows the percentage of supervisory jobs eliminated doubling in four years.My company is not currently going through a large organized downsizing, but rather a slow downsizing through attrition and hiring fewer people.The flattening of my company, coupled with the implementation of high performance work systems has undoubtedly placed the results of doing business on the employees.The book dedicates an entire chapter to these work organizations and the responsibilities that they bring to the employees.

The book describes the changes and brings supporting data, but the authors do not give any significant conclusions or forecasts and does not present the data in a way that the reader can draw his or her own conclusions.The lack of conclusions or forecasts and the poor linking of the chapters leave the experienced reader, someone who has been through downsizing and is involved in high performance work groups, no better off than he or she was before. ... Outdated and boring
Studying outdated energy practices in this blisteringly fast-paced world seems like a waste of time. It dooesn't cover any of the newer technologies, it completely disregards biodiesel, it calls ethanol a waste without going into detail, and its long-winded historical approach doesn't teach well.

Book traces the first half century of oil in Texas from Spindletop through East Texas and the Permian Basin.
There are three reasons why you should buy Diana and Roger Olien's book `Oil in Texas'. It is nicely-produced, with lots of illustrations. The writing is unobtrusive and authoritative. But best of all, it is a great tale which encapsulates, if not all, at least a fair sized chunk of humanity, big and little oil, some science, government, regulation, and the environment. In fact the first Texan discoveries in Corsicana led to environmental legislation as early as in 1899. These imposed open-hole casing requirements, although the concern was more for the well-being of the reservoir than for aquifer pollution.
The 1901 Spindletop discovery at Beaumont really got things moving - after the lease had changed hands three times, and an `expert' geologist derided the prospect as `idle dreams or insane notions'. Spindletop produced over 17 million barrels of oil in 1902! At the time, non-geological theories of prospectivity abounded. Former Texas governor James Hogg was asked what made up `oil land.' Hogg replied "If it hain't no good for nothing else, it's a good sign; and if the title is bad, it's a cinch."
Texas politics shaped the oil industry from the outset. Ever suspicious of things out-of-state, Texas became the heartland of anti-trust legislation. What in some ways was a propaganda war against the `monopolistic' majors, led to the establishment of a healthy Texan oil industry.
Local industry was also bolstered by the powerful Texas Railroad Commission (TRC), which by the end of the 1940's `exercised far more influence over [worldwide] crude oil prices than OPEC does today'. The TRC's regulations, on matters such as gas venting, and water encroachment, frequently went un-policed. It was left up to individuals and companies to enforce regulation through the courts.
By 1920, geological theories had evolved beyond the salt dome `fixation' to trends, anticlines and stratigraphic traps. Gravity prospecting, refraction and later reflection seismics, introduced by Everett DeGolyer's Geophysical Research Corporation, came in slowly with mixed results. In fact the big one - the East Texas `colossus' of oilfields was found with 1930 with no help at all from science. The East Texas field, with estimated recoverable reserves of 7 billion barrels (of which 2 billion remain today!) is a pure stratigraphic trap with no surface manifestation whatsoever.
Other tricks of the trade were discovered in this early period. Independent Cullen drilled for oil in fields abandoned by the majors, and sometimes located newer reserves in deeper horizons. Some of the discoveries beggar belief. One well in the Permian Basin's Yates field produced at a rate of 200,000 barrels per day. A photo shows the drilling crew looking rather philosophical as they pose, drenched in black gold.
The boom and bust cyclical nature of the industry was established from the earliest days. The National Guard was called in to quell the trouble resulting from the total collapse in the oil price that soaring production from East Texas created. More legislation followed - against `hot oil' from out of state.
Oil in Texas' only failings are the rather skimpy maps and the near-absence of any geological sections de l'époque. Actually there is one - a marvelous section from the Houston Post of 1901 showing an underground river of oil flowing from Corsicana, through Beaumont and out into the Gulf. Makes you wonder - if you project out into the deepwater - maybe it ends up feeding ThunderHorse!

Excellent Reference for Gender Inequality in IT
I have been using this text for a research paper on IT Work Trends, and so far, I have been impressed with the layout and the content of this book.

What we can do to get rid of gender inequality in IT, down to the secondary school level.

The small sample sizes in some of the Chapters (especially Chapter 2) may seem too small, and I must emphasize that it is important to understand why the sample sizes are small before taking some of the statistics to heart (or rejecting them for that matter).

All in all, this resource is to-the-point and easy to use for research. Aside from those who have a specific interest in the subject matter covered in this book, I would also recommend this book for educators who are concerned about some of the overarching effects of gender discrimination.

Excellent book for selection of colleges.
For the person who have no idea what colleges they go to, and what to look for in colleges.The book guides you through with a self-assessment survey in the beginning that allows you to prioritize between preferences you mayhave for colleges.

The most useful part of the book, however, is thecatagorized colleges.Unlike other books that list colleges by state oralphabetic order, this book lists the "brain" colleges, theliberal arts colleges, the "specialized" colleges.This allowsme to find colleges that are similar to the ones they are interestedin.

Also gives significant insights into the colleges with long andinformative commentaries on each of the profiled colleges.

Also includesa section on the admissions process itself.

The only shortcoming is thefact that not too many colleges are included, but the ones that are areamazingly done.

Broken Book
Took over two weeks to receive book. Once received, ALL the pages were completely detached from the cover/spine of the book. In other words, as soon as I opened the package all the pages of the book fell out of the cover. Item when purchased was described as great condition, but when received was hardly from it.
