Product Description
U.S. Highway 66, popularly known as "Route 66," is significant as the nation's first all-weather highway linking Chicago to Los Angeles. When contrasted with transcontinental corridors such as the Lincoln Highway and U.S. Highway 40, Route 66 does not stand out as America's oldest or longest road.

Nevertheless, what sets this segment of national highway apart from its contemporaries is that it remains the shortest, year-round route between the Midwest and the Pacific Coast. U.S. Highway 66 reduced the distance between Chicago and Los Angeles by more than 200 miles, which made Route 66 popular among thousands of motorists who drove west in subsequent decades.
Like other highways of its day, Route 66 reflects the origin and evolution of road transportation in the United States. The often romanticized highway represents an outstanding example of the transition from dirt track to superhighway. Not only does Route 66 underscore the importance of the automobile as a technological achievement, but, perhaps equally important to the American psyche, it symbolized unprecedented freedom and mobility for every citizen who could afford to own and operate a car. Escalating numbers of motor vehicles and the rise of the trucking industry increased the need for improved highways. In response the federal government pledged to link small town U.S.A. with all of the metropolitan capitals.

The period of outstanding historical significance for Route 66 is 1933 to 1970. The national system of public highways brought geographic cohesion and economic prosperity to the disparate regions of the country. As a component of the federal network Route 66 linked the isolated and predominantly rural West to the densely populated urban Midwest and Northeast. Chicago had long served as a transshipment point for goods that were transported to the West. The creation of Route 66 ensured the continuation of this vital socioeconomic link. The appearance of U.S. Highway 66 came at a time of unparalleled social, economic, and political disruption and global conflict. and it enabled the most comprehensive movement of people in the history of the United States. One result was the irreversible transformation of the American far west from a rural frontier to a pacesetting, metropolitan region.

Product Description
Critical essays on 20th-century female artists of color focus on how these distinguised artists achieved success, what makes their work important--both to the art world and to their specific communities--and what influences their work is likely to have in the future. The artists are representative of four ethnic groups: African American, Asian Pacific American, Latin American, and Native American. Parallels drawn explore the similarities and differences among the artists. The early feminist art movement of the 1970s concentrated on gender with less consideration given to race or class, yet to many artists of color, ethnicity factors significantly into the shaping of their identities and to the content of their art. Women artists of color have expanded the scope of protest art, fusing the past and current history with gender and race and deconstructing stereotypical mainstream representations of their gender and ethnic identities. This presentation of artists balances older and deceased artists with the younger, emerging artists. The artistic mediums span the gamut from traditional painting and sculpture to newer forms such as video, conceptual, and performance art. ... Read more

The Negritude movement was initiated in the 1930s by the sisters Jane and Paulette Nardal, who created a journal called The Review of the African World-- a journal that recognized the value of black experiences globally. The name of the movement was grafted from a poem by Aimie Cesaire, "The Return to the Native Land." Negritude flourished between 1930 and 1960, until its eventual collapse due to problems with definitions, ideological floundering, and the burden of foreign language that was inflicted by the writings of Jean Paul Sartre.

Product Description
The United States continues to proclaim its support for democracy and its opposition to tyranny, but American presidents often have supported dictators who have allied themselves with the United States. This book illustrates the chronic dilemmas inherent in US dealings with dictators under conditions of uncertainty and moral ambiguity.

Dealing with Dictators offers in-depth analysis of six cases: the United States and China, 1945-1948; UN intervention in the Congo, 1960-1965; the overthrow of the Shah of Iran; US relations with the Somoza regime in Nicaragua; the fall of Marcos in the Philippines; and US policy toward Iraq, 1988-1990. The authors' fascinating and revealing accounts shed new light on critical episodes in US foreign policy and provide a basis for understanding the dilemmas that US decision makers confronted. The chapters do not focus on whether US leaders made the "right" or "wrong" decisions, but instead seek to deepen our understanding of how uncertainty permeated the process and whether decision makers and their aides asked the right questions. This approach makes the book invaluable to scholars and students of government and history, and to readers interested in the general subject of how intelligence analysis interacts with policymaking.

Product Description
The greatest sports moments of the 20th Century-by one of the greatest sportswriters of the 20th Century

Shirley Povich was the Dean of American Sportswriters. As a columnist for The Washington Post for more than seventy-five years, he was an eyewitness to the most thrilling moments in American sports, including: the legendary 1927 Dempsy-Tunney "long count"; the celebrated 1938 race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral; the 1946 signing of Jackie Robinson by the Brooklyn Dodgers; Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series; the Ali-Frazier fight of 1971; and the murder of eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. But Povich's columns were about more than sports; they reflected the dramatic changes in American society over the course of the 20th Century. Driven by a strong sense of social justice, Povich called for the integration of major league baseball in 1939, and twenty years later he was still at it, attacking Washington Redskins owner George Preston Marshall for having an all-white team. For the 100th anniversary of his birth, Povich's children-David, Maury, and Lynn-and his colleague at the Post, former sports editor George Solomon, have pulled together this panoramic collection of Povich's most beloved columns. The result is a front-row seat to the most awe-inspiring sports moments of our American Century. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "All those mornings at the Post..."
This is a great book. We've purchased two as gifts because it is interesting, well written and enjoyed by any sports fan who knows some sports history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review From the Twenties into the Nineties
Shirley Povich, the late sportswriter of The Washington Post, has provided us with a review of eight decades of some of his best articles. If you enjoy sports history, you will enjoy the anecdotes he has to tell you regarding the heavyweights of the sports world over eight decades of writing.Other writers are equally authoratative, but Povich was on the scene for a much longer period of time.He would often agonize over how to open with a column, but on October 8, 1956, he came up with a gem that read "The million-to-one shot came in.Hell froze over.A month of Sundays hit the calendar.Don Larsen today pitched a no-hit, no-run, no-man-reach-first game in a World Series."Mr. Povich was at Yankee Stadium during Gehrig's Farewell Address on July 4, 1939, and was in Baltimore when Cal Ripken broke Gehrig's record.I did find some annoying errors by the editors of the book.Page 131 lists the date of Larsen's perfecto as October 9, 1956.Page 220 has a bold-faced headline entitled "Facing Kofax" which has Sandy's name misspelled.Page 350 has Gehrig's consecutive game streak listed at 2,132.Also, Mr. Povich has an error on Page 366 when he lists Bobo Hollomon as a member of the Cardinals rather than the Browns when he tossed is no-hitter in his first major league start.I don't mean to pick on the errors, they are there, but the book rates five stars and is authored by a man who is honored in the writers' wing in the Baseball Hall of Fame.If you enjoy baseball history this book belongs on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Look Back at 7 Decades of Sports
I grew up in Washington reading Shirley Povich regularly. I read him for about 20 years in the Post. The interesting footnote to that is that he had "retired" before I ever started reading his columns!

The scope of this work is breathtaking. How many journalists coverd the 1924 Senators World Series as well as their last game in 1971.Oh and for good measure he covered the start of the Tiger Woods era as well.Did I mention he caddied for President Harding?

In an age when sports writers spend more time getting ready to be witty for ESPN shows, this book offers a wonderful insight into an era when sports writers worked a beat and REPORTED as well as offered commentary (and were actually writers). And Povich did both in a simple, straightforward style that was easy to digest with the morning coffee.

His opinions were straighforward too and he tackled tough issues like racisim in sports, long before other sribes in the press box dared take a side on a controversial subject.

The book is well edited with some nice historical context given to many of the works. Can't wait for Vol. 2, after all he wrote about 20,000 columns during his 74 year career at the post

5-0 out of 5 stars The Soul of Sports Journalism
Rarely does a book take me very long to read, especially when its composed of a series of short pieces such as newspaper columns.Journalism isn't supposed to be literature, and sports writing particularly is mainly to give the doggone scores.

Then again, calling Mr. Povich a sportswriter is about as accurate as calling the Pope a good man.

Mr. Povich was the genuine soul of the almighty Washington Post, perhaps the most principled writer ever to grace the pages of any newspaper's sports section. He belongs in the very rare and esteemed company of great journalists such as Cronkite, Mencken, Twain and pehaps a few others.

Yeah, these pieces give you the story. What's more, you get the story behind the story. And it's done in language a 13-year-old can read and understand.

Knowing perfectly well how special this collection is, I read it as slowly as possible. Why rush a good thing?I'm sure Mr. Povich had to fight the daily deadline pressures to produce the work. The least we can do is savor his command of language and keen insight into human character.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a visit with an old friend
For almost 75 years Shirley Povich was a fixture on the sports desk of the Washington Post. He didn't exactly invent sports reporting, but he certainly help define it in a unique way. His style of reporting, his style of writing created a respect that went beyond sports. He used the sports world as a window on the broader world of America. Sports reflected the dramatic changes in American society over the course of the twentieth century from the depression, to war, to race, to everything else.

The problem with newspaper columns is that they get recycled with the rest of the paper. Only once in a while are a lifetime of columns lovingly collected by people who care (his children and a sports editor) and are published as a book.

If you are familar with the original columns, here is a visit with old friends. If you have not read the originals, here is the way that sports (and maybe everything else) should be reported.

This book is an absolute delight. ... Read more

Product Description
An extended Italian immigrant family clings to community life amid tragedy, the Spanish flu, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. A broken Polish immigrant family leaves a legacy of heartbreak, separation, Civilian Conservation Corps redemption, and World War II heroism. From these dissimilar backgrounds emerges a quintessential American family, one whose members embody the conflicting social movements of their times: a staunchly Catholic Polish immigrant U.S. Marine Corps father, an emotionally effusive Italian mother, an Oliver North son, a Hillary Clinton daughter, a mentally ill sister, a jock brother, a lesbian rocker, and a gay male activist. In an era of bitter cultural polarization, Oh, Beautiful: An American Family in the 20th Century celebrates what has kept America together. This true story is a gripping portrait of an American family and an evocative documentation of nearly 100 years of American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cinematic and Epic in Its Scope
Falling somewhere between de Tocqueville and de Chardin, Oh, Beautiful is a grand spiritual exhalation of what it means to be American. The stories of the various family members are told with the journalistic detachment and eye for detail that John Godges has honed in his twenty-odd years as an editor. I had expected the book to be well-crafted. I did not expect, however, for it to be cinematic and epic in its scope, and yet, by page 5, he had engaged me with a scene that might begin a Hollywood blockbuster. From there, he took me on a great American adventure in which the family's faith found itself continuously tested by conflicts arising within the family itself.

Oh, Beautiful is not an overtly political work; nevertheless, it contains a profoundly political message. The traditionalists and the right constantly endeavor to claim sole proprietorship of what it means to be American. They are often oblivious to their own history. We are almost entirely a nation of immigrants who came here for the promise of economic opportunity, political freedom and equality under the law. As a book that explores a single family whose political views span the spectrum in every generation, we find a fully realized, dangerous view that America is all of us: the narrow-minded reactionaries AND the wide-ranging liberals.

Oh, Beautiful proposes that the author's family and, indeed, the entirety of America function as a dialectic between two goods. The first good is the individualism personified by Joseph, who was placed in the wholly untenable and unfathomable position of having to decide at the age of eleven whether he would follow his father to the promise of America or stay with his mother in Poland and who then had to build a life for himself largely on his own when his father proved unreliable. The second good is the communitarianism personified by Joseph's wife, Ida, who brought all the neighborhood children into the house and fed them and who instilled such a sense of the importance of family relationships that the immediate reaction to Joseph's excommunication of one of their daughters was the rest of the kids pledging to get together with her regularly.

In some respects, Oh, Beautiful reads like Allende's House of the Spirits. Prior generations strode mightily into America and accomplished legendary feats, creating the society in which we find ourselves. They raised crops in the garden and butchered their own pigs. And we, the current generation, seem week, effete and troubled by comparison. It moves from the magical and legendary past to the real and difficult present. And yet, unlike Allende's fictional family, the family of Oh, Beautiful remains whole and happy despite their struggles for acceptance. Thus, Oh, Beautiful is a hopeful vision of an America that perpetually arises from the dialectic between the individual and the community

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE READ IN YEARS
One cannot read this wonderful book without a personal running commentary on one's own family and one's own destiny.OH, BEAUTIFUL is one of the best books I've read in years.John Paul Godges' talent for writing is obvious, as he drew me into his own personal experiences and the complex drama of his family. The story is so very warmly expressed that I feel I know each member of the family very intimately, as I am almost a member, albeit by proxy. His own personal expressions of being gay are so very poignant, meaningful, and loving. For me, it is one of the best chapters in an already superbly written book.I am impressed especially by the way Godges weaves his family history into a commentary on life in America, which I am sure will spark the interest of many readers.I will certainly recommend this book to my family and friends.

F.B. Thompson(Former Unitarian Minister)

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Engaging
John Godges' Oh, Beautiful is a page-turning mix of multi-generational memoir and American history. The story of this immigrant family's life in America includes a decapitation, a childhood shooting, bootlegging, mental illness and a recipe for authentic Italian pasta sauce. These and other events present both constant challenges and the constant reinterpretation of family and faith. In an age where sixteen-year-olds are publishing best sellers about warring dragons and teen vampires, it is incredibly refreshing to read something so well written. In addition to subtly engaging you in some of the major events in American history over the last century, Oh, Beautiful will inspire you to recover your own family's secrets and gems.

This collection of essays presents a nearly comprehensive understanding of Western and non-Western perceptions of the United States since the Second World War. The contributors describe and assess the complexity of anti-American sentiment in six distinct parts of the world: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia while respecting the ambiguities, contradictions, and frequent reversals of these sentiments. The book does not seek to attack or defend the United States but rather looks to bring sustained attention to the sources of anti-Americanism, its present variety, and its likely trajectory.

Product Description
Inspired by the idealism of the civil rights movement, the women who launched the radical second wave of the feminist movement believed, as a bedrock principle, in universal sisterhood and color-blind democracy. Their hopes, however, were soon dashed. To this day, the failure to create an integrated movement remains a sensitive and contested issue. In The Trouble Between Us, Winifred Breines explores why a racially integrated women's liberation movement did not develop in the United States.

Drawing on flyers, letters, newspapers, journals, institutional records, and oral histories, Breines dissects how white and black women's participation in the movements of the 1960s led to the development of separate feminisms. Herself a participant in these events, Breines attempts to reconcile the explicit professions of anti-racism by white feminists with the accusations of mistreatment, ignorance, and neglect by African American feminists. Many radical white women, unable to see beyond their own experiences and idealism, often behaved in unconsciously or abstractly racist ways, despite their passionately anti-racist stance and hard work to develop an interracial movement. As Breines argues, however, white feminists' racism is not the only reason for the absence of an interracial feminist movement. Segregation, black women's interest in the Black Power movement, class differences, and the development of identity politics with an emphasis on "difference" were all powerful factors that divided white and black women.

By the late 1970s and early 1980s white feminists began to understand black feminism's call to include race and class in gender analyses, and black feminists began to give white feminists some credit for their political work. Despite early setbacks, white and black radical feminists eventually developed cross-racial feminist political projects. Their struggle to bridge the racial divide provides a model for all Americans in a multiracial society.

Product Description
After the Second World War the Irish state maintained the high industrial tariffs of the 1930s, despite the inefficiency of its protected industries. Such inefficiency fed into the crisis of economic stagnation and mass emigration that engulfed the Republic in the 1950s. As EEC entry became the state's goal, adapting and upgrading Irish industries for free trade conditions loomed large in the 1960s. These ends were pursued through technical assistance schemes and a productivity drive - innovations introduced to the Irish state by the US Marshall Plan. This book looks at this neglected aspect of post-war Irish history and analyzes the social, political, and economic effects of the policies pursued. ... Read more

Product Description

Over the twentieth century, American Indians fought for their right to be both American and Indian. In an illuminating book, Paul C. Rosier traces how Indians defined democracy, citizenship, and patriotism in both domestic and international contexts.

Battles over the place of Indians in the fabric of American life took place on reservations, in wartime service, in cold war rhetoric, and in the courtroom. The Society of American Indians, founded in 1911, asserted that America needed Indian cultural and spiritual values. In World War II, Indians fought for their ancestral homelands and for the United States. The domestic struggle of Indian nations to defend their cultures intersected with the international cold war stand against termination—the attempt by the federal government to end the reservation system. Native Americans seized on the ideals of freedom and self-determination to convince the government to preserve reservations as places of cultural strength. Red Power activists in the 1960s and 1970s drew on Third World independence movements to assert an ethnic nationalism that erupted in a series of protests—in Iroquois country, in the Pacific Northwest, during the occupation of Alcatraz Island, and at Wounded Knee.

Believing in an empire of liberty for all, Native Americans pressed the United States to honor its obligations at home and abroad. Like African Americans, twentieth-century Native Americans served as a visible symbol of an America searching for rights and justice. American history is incomplete without their story.

Product Description
Promoting Polyarchy is an exciting, detailed and controversial work on the apparent change in US foreign policy from supporting dictatorships to promoting "democratic" regimes. William I. Robinson argues that behind this facade, US policy upholds the undemocratic status quo of Third World countries. He addresses the theoretical and historical issues at stake, and uncovers a wealth of information from field work and hitherto unpublished government documents. Promoting Polyarchy is an essential book for anyone concerned with democracy, globalization and international affairs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Myth of Democracy Promotion
Robinson has written a truly intellectual book on democracy and democracy promotion. While the world debates whether or not the US government can or cannot promote democracy, Robinson demonstrates that Washington has a history of trouncing rather than promoting democracy.US policymakers have over the years desired pro-US regimes that hold elections rather than truly democratic governments, since truly democratic government may run counter to US interests. His book is a sober and much needed addition to the democratization literature that is mired in an unhealthy acceptance of elections and democratic values as the major characteristics of democracy.

1-0 out of 5 stars He doesn't even know what the word means!
The word "polyarchy" means "rule by many," as opposed to "oligarchy" - "rule by the few" - and "monarchy" - "rule by one."The author talks about rule by the few - oligarchy - but assigns it a word that actually means the opposite - polyarchy. It stands to reason that if he doesn't even know the meaning of a word in the title then his book probably isn't the best source for intelligent information and analysis.

I see though that two people gave this book five star reviews.Maybe this shows just how much our educational system has been dumbing everyone down.Or maybe it shows that some people have been living in an Orwellian paradigm for so long that they're accustomed to being told that black is white.Maybe both...

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant exposition of US policy and the global order
In this difficult but extremely provocative and scholarly work, William I. Robinson presents a new model for understanding US foreign policy and the emergent global society as a whole. The crux of his thesis is this: US foreign policy has changed in the last twenty years or so from open support of authoritian regimes in countries where the US has economic and/or strategic interests to a program of "democracy promotion" that strives to place minority elite groups who are responsive to the interests of the United States and transnational capital at the head of the political, economic, and civic structures of "third world" countries.

Contrary to popular opinion (and that of much of academia), the real goal of democracy promotion, or what Robinson refers to as "promoting polyarchy", is not the promotion of democracy at all, but rather the promotion of the interests of an increasingly transnational elite headed by the US who seek open markets for goods and an increase in the free flow of capital. This marks a conscious shift in foreign policy in which the US now favors "consensual domination" by democratically elected governments rather than authoritarian leaders and the type of "crony capitalism" made famous by the likes of Ferdinand Marcos and Anastacio Somoza.

The first sections of the book introduce numerous theoretical concepts (drawing heavily on the theories of the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, in particular his theory of hegemony) that are crucial to the understanding of the text.I personally found these sections extremely difficult but well worth the time it takes to read certain parts several times.Robinson then goes on to document four case studies-- the Phillipines, Chile, Nicaragua, and Haiti-- each of which fleshes out his conceptual framework in much more concrete terms. The result is a disturbing picture of US foreign policy and the current direction of "globalization."I would highly recommend this to anyone with a strong interest in foreign affairs and/or the future of humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students interested in International Studies!
Robinson gives a detailed account of the United States position concerning foriegn affairs where Latin America and other developing nations are concerned. He is thorough and the book proves to be a great reference guide as well as provocative reading. ... Read more
