Product Description

The way many secondary schools are structured limits the ability of immigrant English Learners to achieve academically and develop social networks, often resulting in hyper-segregated learning experiences. This book explores the journey of a group of teachers in a secondary school as they work to change the ESL program for immigrants in their school. As this group of teachers worked to create a program that supported their students’ home languages and funds of knowledge, structures within the school, and Discourses from other teachers, administrators, and the nation/community both constrained/enabled the teachers to create an equitable learning environment.

Product Description
As teaching evolves, teacher education must keep up. This book examines systemic reforms that incorporate new technology to improve any teacher education program.

While there are books that address the integration of technology into teaching curricula, very few address the process for teacher education faculty and the systemic reform of a teacher education program. Integrating Information Technology into the Teacher Education Curriculum: Process and Products of Change provides practical examples and suggestions for teacher education departments striving to integrate new technologies into their curriculum. It will help in the effort to motivate faculty to make utilizing new technology a natural strategy for the teachers they are educating. It describes the creation of Design Teams at Brigham Young University’s McKay School of Education (funded by a PT3 grant) and how these teams worked to successfully reconfigure the school’s teacher preparation curricula.

Integrating Information Technology into the Teacher Education Curriculum examines:

how to compose and create a curriculum design team—including both teacher education and content-specific methods instructors

training and collaboration opportunities that focus on the infusion of technology

how to facilitate alignment among a university, cooperating school districts, the State Office of Education, and other available teacher preparation programs

specific case examples of the redevelopment of teacher education courses by the instructors who teach them

the process of changing a technology course required by the teacher education program

the process of extending grant activities to the university’s partner school districts and the State Office of Education

From the editors:

Preparing tomorrow’s teachers to use technology in schools is a complex endeavor requiring the infusion of technology into curriculum and instructional practices at all levels of the pre-service program. In many early teacher education programs, prospective teachers took a computer literacy class separate from content methods classes and rarely engaged in real collaboration on how schoolteachers could integrate technology into authentic learning experiences. By focusing merely on how to use computers, technology training failed by not addressing how to teach students more effectively using a variety of technological tools. What teachers need to know most is how to teach content more effectively. Technology integration should cause teachers to develop different perspectives through rethinking teaching and learning. Teaching with technology causes teachers to confront their established beliefs about instruction and their traditional roles as classroom teachers. ... Read more

Product Description
The true, inside story of the UCLA Olympic Laboratory - the drug-detection team that tests athletes for banned performance-enhancing drugs. The team worked long nights for two weeks to detect a new, never-before-tested performance-enhancing drug called NESP (novel erythropoietic stimulating protein) during the 19th Winter Olympics (2002) in Salt Lake City, Utah. The group's work exposed three NESP users among the winning cross-country skiers. The drug users were stripped of their medals, which were then given to the rightful winners. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlocks the mystery of testing athletes for illicit drugs
Unlocks the mystery of testing athletes for illicit drugs -why are these drugs a problem, how are they detected, what are the consequences? Caroline Hatton explains in understandable terms the very complex process of identifying chemicals in the laboratory which are used by athletes to make their bodies stronger, faster and more enduring under the intense pressure of the Olympic Games. She provides a personal look at the doctors and researchers working in the labs to uncover this wide reaching and wide spread deception. Along the way, she also addresses important related topics, including educational path to these laboratory jobs, why athletes use drugs in competition, and the increasing problem of designer drugs.

This book is a wonderful resource for middle to high school students, and even adults. The misappropriation of ancient and modern medicine (and quickly evolving designer drugs) in the desire to be acknowledged as the best in the world is a surprisingly engrossing topic.A great reference for the library, this topic will be of lasting interest for years after the Olympics are over.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing story!
Truth is always stranger than fiction, and this story is a must for all young children to read. Any attempt to cheat by taking drugs in sports is
a big story - and will ultimately bring down the athelete. Win fair and clean - a strong messaage. ... Read more

Product Description
Alison Thorne provides a small-town Utah perspective onthe progressive social movements that in the mid to late twentiethcentury dramatically affected American society. A born activist,Thorne has fought for women's rights, educational reform in publicschools and universities, the environment, peace, and the war onpoverty. Her efforts have been all the more challenging because of theconservative social and cultural environment in which she hasundertaken them. Yet, Thorne, who has deep personal and familial rootsin the politically conservative and predominantly Mormon culture ofUtah and much of the West, has worked well with people with variedpolitical and social perspectives and agendas. She has been able toestablish effective coalitions in contexts that seem inherentlyhostile. She demonstrated this through her election to the localschool board and through her appointment by both Republican andDemocratic governors, eventually as chair, to the statewide Governor'sCommittee on the Status of Women.

Alison Thorne's background prepared her to challenge restrictivesocial contexts, see the broader picture, and encourage progressivechange. Educated in the field of consumption economics, which studiesthose aspects of consumption that operate outside the market system, especially government services and unpaid household production, primarily by women, she received a Ph.D. in economics after graduatestudy at the University of Chicago and Iowa State, a first for a womanat the latter. Moving with her husband after he was hired at UtahState University, she soon discovered that her education and abilitieswere undervalued and that tight nepotism rules kept her out of anacademic position. She devoted herself to research and writing aboutalternatives to the narrow definitions of a housewife's role andduties prevalent in the 1940s and 1950s. Both her scholarly work andher personal inclinations prepared her for the emergence of the secondwave of feminism in the 1960s. Her participation in the fight for theEqual Rights Amendment honed her skills as an activist, which sheapplied to multiple other causes. But Alison Thorne's style has neverbeen mere protest of injustice; she has always been fully engaged withher communities, directly working for social change andbetterment. Rather than be discouraged by initial rejection, she foundways to contribute to education on the USU campus, eventually achievedacademic standing, and helped create women's studies programs and awomen's center. She met other challenges in her city and statesimilarly, by taking her gloves off, reaching out to others, buildingcoalitions, and getting to work. ... Read more
