Famous ClipArt: U.S. Presidents: Martin Van Buren martin van buren (17821862), eighth president of the United States, was the sonof a small farmer, and was born December 5, 1782, at Kinderhook, Columbia http://wondersmith.com/clipart/presidents/Martin_Van_Buren.htm
Extractions: Van Buren's four years of office were darkened by a financial panic; but what one man could do, he did to lighten it, by wringing from Congress its assent to a measure for a treasury independent of private banks. This, and his firm adherence to neutrality during the Canadian rebellion of 1837, showed him to be a far-seeing statesman; but both cost him popularity, and in 1840 he and his party were overwhelmingly defeated by the Whigs. His administration is also remembered for the passage of a preemption law giving settlers on public lands the preference in their purchase. In 1844 a majority of the delegates to the Democratic convention were pledged to support Van Buren, but on account of his opposition to the annexation of Texas they allowed a motion to be introduced making a two-thirds vote necessary for nomination. This he failed to obtain and his name was withdrawn. In 1848 he was nominated by the anti-slavery ("Free-Soil") section of his party, but the split caused the defeat of both Democratic candidates. He supported Pierce in 1852 and Buchanan in 1856, though remaining an uncompromising opponent of slavery. But his life was spent chiefly in retirement on his estate at Kinderhook, with the exception of a European tour in 1853-55. He died at Kinderhook July 24, 1862. I have visited this site two times. The first time I went there were some wilted flowers near the grave. Traditionally, the current president sends flowers to the graves of each of the deceased former presidents on their birthdays. Van Buren's birthday was a week or so before I got there, so the flowers were still there. I arrived at President Grover Cleveland 's grave the day after his birthday, so you can see more fresh flowers at his gravesite picture.
