In time, you will begin to see the world as a realm of infinite lessons to be understood and valued. Teachers and students are on a first-name basis. In classrooms, common courtesy supplants formality, even in the most heated discussions. Putney teachers see education as a two-way communication process and make good use of many teaching opportunities outside the classroom. Untitled Tempting as it was to hop back in our rental cars and flee halcyon vermont for theless hostile Like most boarding schools, Putney is a place of great privilege http://www.putney.com/resc_put/people/intro.htm
Extractions: Photographs by Mark Lyon; Produced by Jorge Ramon When we arrived at the Putney School in Putney, Vermont, we didn't exactly get our usual School Zone welcome. Instead, we stepped onto a campus plastered with hand-drawn anti-Seventeen posters and T-shirts condemning the "brainwashing, capitalist values" our magazine promotes. The antagonism came as a surprise, since the administration had extended such a warm invitation. As for first impressions, the students had us wishing we'd signed up to photograph the Day School at Sing Sing Federal Penitentiary. Tempting as it was to hop back in our rental cars and flee halcyon Vermont for the less hostile environment of New York City, we decided to stick around and face the fury. After all, we chose to come to Putney because we thought it would make an interesting, unusual story. And so far, we were exactly right. The Putney School is a small, independent boarding school situated on a beautiful, isolated mountain campus. Unlike some of its more conventional prep-school siblings, Putney is famous for its emphasis on work (as in labor): The students are responsible for making the place run, from cooking and serving all of the meals to keeping the senior cabins well stocked with firewood to managing the impressive working farm. Every student has several jobs, and every job has a tangible purpose. So if you have a lot of calculus homework, or if you just feel like taking a nap, too bad - the cows still need milking, the mail still needs delivering and the bathrooms still need cleaning. At Putney, there's no such thing as a day off.
