Three schools report direct expenditures less than $2.0 million. Sponsored research expenditures (direct) as a percentage of total expenditures (direct) range from 7% to 48%, with 14 of the 27 colleges reporting less than 20%. Even though the primary goal of the WesternU-CVM is instruction, a second goal is to maintain substantial research activities. Projected sponsored research dollars by the end of the first five years of the program are expected to range from 5 to 10% of the total budget (or $.75 to $1.5 million), which, in a new program focusing on instruction, appears to fall within benchmark ranges cited above, even for schools which articulate an equal devotion to teaching and research.
