Extractions: Ivan Jadan Museum : The Ivan Jadan Museum on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands offers cross-cultural views of the 94 year long life of the man now judged to be the great Russian tenor of the 20th century. He was the first major artist dissident to escape Stalin's terror in 1941, and reach the U.S. eight years later. But Soviet attempts to destroy Jadan continued. He survived an assassination attempt while in New York City in 1949. The museum today houses a growing collection of more than 5000 fascinating artifacts, including a unique collection of videos, books and CD's in Russian and English for serious research, historic documents and photos. Living history programs with museum adventures are offered for elementary students. Informal seminars are held with students and faculty from the University of the Virgin Islands and Middlebury College of Vermont.

It is a hybrid heritage; a culture that shares the magic of the Caribbean and at the same time is truly American. People living in the USVI have maintained their ancestral heritage while welcoming traditions of others. You will no doubt find fast-food restaurants, next to local restaurants, next to fishermen selling a fresh catch. On the radio you can hear calypso music, American pop, salsa or blues. Florida oranges are sold side by side with kenips, mangos and coconuts. And CNN news is broadcast daily as loud and clear as local gossip. Together, the American and Caribbean combination makes the United States Virgin Islands a definite American Paradise. The population in the USVI is mostly descendants of Caribbean or West Indian people. The European influence is that of the Danes, who owned the islands for over 250 years. A strong French presence is found on St. Thomas. These people are transplants from the French island of St. Barths. Recent arrivals include quite a number of Americans from the mainland, Europeans and Hispanics, particularly on St. Croix where it is common to hear Spanish being spoken.

The hybrid Caribbean culture is evident in the food, in the music and in the handmade sloops that many locals use for fishing. Islanders reflect a mixture of British and West Indian influences when playing their dashing style of cricket and when they wash down a plate of conch fritters with a pint of ale. Virgin Islanders are suckers for a beat. Fungi bands play scratch instruments such as gourds and washboards and sing songs that often comment on local social and political issues. Calypso, known originally as kaiso, was brought here by African slaves and used as a form of communication and rebellion. It's still an integral part of the islands' Carnival, which began as a celebration of slave emancipation. A lot of islanders of African descent retain a strong belief in the spirit world: ghosts (jumbis) often get blamed for bad things and credited for good things on the islands. Jumbi stories were an important part of slave culture, used not only as spine-tingling entertainment on moonlit nights, but also as cautionary tales for children. The inspirational antics of Bru Nansi, a wily spidery man who prevailed in adverse circumstances, were an integral part of West African slave culture. Storytelling traditions persist today, though often in more structured settings such as community halls and festival gatherings.

Extractions: by Vivian Williamson-Bryan The Cultural Capital of the World! Not quite the descriptive phrase one might associate with St Thomas. Beach capital. Sailing capital. Even cruise ship capital. But cultural capital? I don't think so. But just wait - we're working on it. While not quite up to that lofty designation - yet - we're not a total cultural backwater either. And you thought you had to go to a big, dirty, smoggy, congested (I could go on forever) city to be entertained on a higher level! Not. Over the years such show business luminaries as Bill Cosby, Chuck Mangione, Natalie Cole, Lionel Hampton and Tito Puente (this list could also go on forever) have come to entertain the island's residents and visitors at one of the most beautiful outdoor venues imaginable - Reichhold Center for the Arts. Reichhold (no one here says any more than that - just like when was the last time you heard someone refer to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts? Human nature likes Isn't is amazing that a dinky little island like St Thomas has such a terrific showcase for performers? The credit - and I do mean all of it - goes to one man - Henry Reichhold.

Extractions: by Vivian Williamson-Bryan Contrary to popular opinion, it is not true that St Thomas's sidewalks are rolled up at 5 pm! It just seems that way. Our nightlife isn't apparent to the casual onlooker - and certainly not to the tourist fresh off the plane (we don't count those ones off the boat - most of those pull out by 6 pm - you'd think they were going to turn into pumpkins or something) - but there is some if you look. Really. Since we don't have the usual collection of TGIFs, bowling alleys, roller skating rinks, amusement parks or that ever popular indoor entertainment complex - the mega mall - just what do we have? Well ... probably as many diversions - if not more - than the average smaller city (and it's no fair comparing us to NYC or DC either!). While not quite the Great White Way, the St Thomas "cultural"/theatre scene is surprisingly robust. Besides the Reichhold performances (big time culture), there are regular performances by the local theatre group, Pistarckle Theatre (their productions are lots of fun - rollicking musicals seem to be a favourite - The Wiz, Nunsense

It has Road Town as its capital on the southern shore of the island. It has constructed a large yacht chartering business, which is able to take people to these islands.
