Product Description

“Sometimes I have thought that this school is like the only place where the lilies are considered at all…” In this stirring account of a teacher and his fourteen students tucked away in the Green Mountains of Vermont, educator Tal Birdsey fervently documents the founding year of his small junior high school with wit and humility. Part memoir, part meditation on the power of art and poetry, and part criticism of standardized education, A Room for Learning evokes a spirit of change, in which students were allowed a hand in their own education. With no set curriculum, no prior history, and limited resources, the students delve deep into the poetry of Yeats and Bukowski, the music of Coltrane, the art of Caravaggio, and the emotional landscape of Elie Wiesel’s “Night”, with each student learning to offer his or her own personal insights. But they also take time out, to be outside amidst the pinecones and fresh air, to be the kids that they still sometimes are and to learn from one another. Isolated from mainstream culture and constantly on the brink of apathy, this diverse group of kids and a teacher created a literary community and celebrated learning and themselves. A Room for Learning is the poignant true story of how one small school demonstrated that a classroom can be a place of transformative power.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book.
I think I had it for two days after finishing it before I thrust it into someone else's hands telling them how amazing it is.
The story, the writing, the information.A beautiful book that while highlighting what I feel is one of the most important yet MOST underrated, or simply unknown, pieces of the puzzle that are the lives and 'education' of children and young adults, did not feel like another system or ideal being intellectualized for smart philosophers while listing all the things wrong with today's schools and teachers(!) And I have enjoyed those books also. These are real flesh and blood stories of transformation, showing us what is risked and what is won.And what is lost!It is something so simple.Yet is so rare to find these teacher's, who sincerely believe in, and sincerely LIKE their students. And not afraid to express it.Even when it seems there is nothing being offered to like. These are the people who can call you on your B.S. without it being about them and their own agenda. And it can be heard because there is always respect. We all need people like that in our lives. How do you give guidance while still empowering someone?I think this books shows just that.
Tal Birdsey gives us a real life example of what can happen when we do not settle for anything less than great from each other, even when we are ready to settle ourselves.

I highly recommend this book. For teachers, parents, anyone who has ever been 13.I was completely inspired and left with a sense of "I could DO this!", in my own way.Which is exactly the kind of support I need. Thank you Tal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching & Learning with Soul
With profound elegance, soul, and odds-defying conviction, Birdsey makes a compelling case why there can be no "formula", "standard", or set "curriculum" in the quest to discover one's true voice and persona. This is a joyous undertaking and journey that shows us all that the most meaningful discoveries are messy, unpredictable, occassionally maddening, but ultimately beautiful and triumphant assertions.

5-0 out of 5 stars "...Great, great book..."
"A ROOM FOR LEARNING is a great, great book, a marvelous depiction of the way it's 'spozed to be, of a school true to itself, of students true to themselves, all because of a great teacher and writer who risked it all to be true to himself. If Thoreau had started a school, this is the book he would have written."
--Bernie Schein, author of If Holden Caulfield Were in My Classroom

5-0 out of 5 stars Education is alive and well
Having been lucky enough to know what a fine writer Tal Birdsey is, I knew that this book would have moment upon moment of gorgeous and powerfullanguage, but what I did not expect was the narrative thrust of his story. The book begins with an idea:Birdsey wants to start a school; the only problem for this teacher who has not taught for several years, is that he has no school and no students. He collects a small group of young adolescents and finds a place to have school, and from there the story is set in motion.Birdsey unleashes his unconventional teaching on a motley group of awkward and brilliant and courageous teenagers, by turns challenging and loving them into creatingthat most mysterious and powerful thing-- a community. You come to know the kids as Birdsey deftly brings them to life, each with his or her own struggle, with his or her own triumph. The community, the school, they create is original, idiosyncratic, enlivening, and inspirational. It's a work of art, as is the book.I couldn't put it down...not something you usually hear about a book on education.I recommend it to anyone interested in education or the growth and development of young people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Two Haiku View
A different road,
Questions, always questioning,
Who am I, are we?

Pause for a moment:
Doubt, then curiosity,
Try another path.
