Product Description

Despite the undoubted success of a scientific approach to pharmaceuticals, the last few decades have witnessed a spectacular rise in interest in herbal medicinal products. This general interest has been followed by increasing scientific and commercial attention that led to the coining of the term ethnopharmacology to describe the scientific discipline investigating the use of these products. Presenting detailed information from all regions of the world, Ethnoveterinary Botanical Medicine provides techniques to evaluate the efficacy of plants used in animal health care and addresses the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners in the field.

This book features a multidisciplinary approach to examining the role of herbal medicines in companion and domestic animals and the scientific underpinnings of ethnoveterinary practice. The text also covers matters relating to access benefit sharing, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), intellectual property, and the skills required to navigate the minefield of bioprospecting. The editors have collated information not often found in the English literature from China, Southeast Asia, francophone Africa and South America. They also explore the emerging use of herbals for pets with a case study from the European Union, highlighting this important area which will spur the growth in ethnoveterinary research due to its commercial potential.

Although many references cover ethnoveterinary medicine in some form or another, none give it the intense scrutiny and scientific input found in this book. With chapters on biological assays, efficacy testing, and phytochemistry, the book presents hard scientific information in accessible and readable language. The editors have gathered a panel of veterinary clinicians, animal scientists, pharmacists, chemists and ethnobotanists who have years of experience working with farmers and pastoralists, making this book quite possibly the first detailed compendium on the plants used in animal health care in all regions of the world.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and dangerous
While it is fairly well known in the aromatherapy world that the French tradition is much more aggressive with their use of essential oils (higher concentrations, more internal use of oils) than the English, it should be better known worldwide that essential oils are HIGHLY toxic for cats and birds. A single drop of many essential oils can kill a cat or bird! Grosjean's book not only recommends the use of undiluted essential oils on cats (which, as we know, are likely to lick off anything put on their fur, this turning a topical application into an internal one), but advocates the use of extremely toxic oils such as sassafras and very strong dilutions (as much as 33% to 50% instead of the more common and safer 1-5%). Grosjean is often referred to as a "woman of passion" - I'd prefer to see her as a woman of reason and caution. We humans can make informed decisions about the use of products dangerous to our health (as smokers and drinkers and junk-food eaters do every single day) but our pets are completely at our mercy. We owe it to them to be cautious and thoroughly educate ourselves on what we intend to do to them.

Kristen Leigh Bell's "Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals" is a FAR better and more up-to-date book that I recommend instead of this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A totaly animal related aromatherapy book!
Nelly Grosjean has a "classical" approach to Aromtherapy. This book takes the reader directly to the topic at hand, how to care for a cat, dog, horse, bird, and farm animals; using aromatherapy. It is understood bythe author that the reader has a background in Aromatherapy; pages aren'tspent on basic background subjects. Great resource for animal care. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book in perfect condition
This book is very informative and it plain words that anyone can understand. It also highlights the topics in a small box which is great for quick references. It is by far the easiest and well put together books I have on Holistic health.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but First Edition was MUCH better
I've just received a copy of the second edition in hopes that the authors or editors had found a way to improve on an already useful book.

Unfortunately, the most striking difference is that the new edition has about half the content. I'm planning on returning the new edition because there are plenty of other, less expensive cursory books about herbs for pets.

4-0 out of 5 stars All you ever wanted to know about herbs for pets
Easy to read and look up problems.Recommended book from a friend--they knew what they were talking about.Good first book for learning about herbs and holistic properties.

5-0 out of 5 stars This great book is a must for anyone wishing to care for their pets naturally
Almost 20 years ago, as my journey and quest into the wonders of natural medicine began, the universe sent me two very special people - Greg and Mary Wulff-Tilford.

We fast became friends and, fortunately for our animals, they happily offered their talents, love and services to BrightHaven (a sanctuary for elderly and disabled animals) to help us heal our animals. We used their fast developing line of products, and also benefited from their amazing expertise in the preparation and use of herbs.

I soon realized the potential of their combination herbal remedies; knew they would be essential to our work, and was consequently thrilled to receive a copy of their amazing book "Herbs for Pets", when it first came into print.

Herbs for Pets has become a BrightHaven bible over the years, and I recommend it over and over again to pet lovers, who wish to enhance and maintain the health of their animals, naturally.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every pet owner
The book is a fascinating collection of often heartwarming stories of cats and dogs who were either given a poor prognosis, a death sentence or a completely wrong diagnosis, and whose owners were coming to Dr. Messonier in hopes of finding a cure or at the very least a way to help their pet live a longer life.It also offers a thorough look at what truly integrative medical, or in this case, veterinary, care really means. An integrative approach to veterinary care uses both conventional treatments, commonly thought of as Western medicine, and natural, alternative and holistic treatments ranging from supplements to herbs to acupuncture.By taking a truly holistic approach, Dr. Messonier treats the patient, not the disease, and uses the best of all available treatment options to achieve optimal healing for each individual patient. This includes looking at the pet's environment and potential exposure to toxins, reducing vaccinations from the old paradigm of annual "shots" to only those required by law or no vaccinations at all, to eliminating by-products and low quality ingredients from the pet's diet.

While each story shared in this book is about the individual pet and the condition the pet's owner sought help with, there are definite commonalities in all the cases, and it's these commonalities that will give the reader a thorough understanding of what an integrative approach to health is truly all about.

In addition, the book is a testament to how much we love our pets and that most of us will go to great lenghts to find ways to keep these wonderful creatures happy and healthy by giving them the best possible care.

I think this book should be on every pet owner's book shelf as not only a reference book, but also as a reminder that sometimes, hope is the best medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, uplifting and thought-provoking...
As a strong advocate for holistic and natural health care for pets, I was incredibly moved and enlightened by "Unexpected Miracles".It isn't just about the fascinating stories..."Unexpected Miracles" is full of vital information that you can apply at home with your own furry friends.

Because I work in the field talking to animal-lovers, I hear a lot of stories where the vet and then the family gave up hope on their animal because traditional medicine was not able to heal. There is ALWAYS hope, and unexpected miracles gives you example after example of why you should NEVER give up.This book has inspired me to share this hope with others.

If you are an animal lover, "Unexpected Miracles" is a must-read...it will change the way you look at your family, your animals, and your life.Kudos to Dr. Shawn Messonnier for sharing his wisdom.

Educating Pet Owners About The Benefits of Natural and Holistic Health

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting For Pet Owners
As pet owners who have been told that nothing could be done for a beloved dog who was dying, we found "Unexpected Miracles" to be an uplifting and educational book on the virtues of holistic medicine for pets and the value of not giving up. Written by a vet, the book presents a series of vignettes detailing the stories of pet owners and their pets as they struggled with various illnesses ranging from mundane allergy issues to end-of-life struggles. The book also details the author's journey from a near-skeptic to full blown believer in holistic medicine for pets. Over and over, the message is "don't give up" and "try a different type of treatment" as the stories unfold. Realistically, not all the stories have storybook endings--indeed, pets do die, and sometimes there is nothing medically to be done. More often than one would realize, however, pets do make miraculous recoveries using alternative approaches when traditional vets have given up. Those stories provide hope for all of us who will face these issues with our pets multiple times over our lifetime, and it is gratifying to know that there is someone like Dr. Shawn who cares enough to try anything for pet owners who are looking for that miracle. While the book is close to 300 pages, it is an easy and quick read. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars My latest and most important book
This is my latest book, and truthfully probably the most important book I've written. The premise is simple:What would you do if your pet was given 24 hours to live? You have only 2 choices. Choice 1 is to accept the horrible diagnosis and prognosis and prepare for your pet's death. Unfortunately this choice is the one chosen by most pet owners. Choice 2 is to say NO and refuse to accept the diagnosis and prognosis, opting instead to find someone who can offer your pet some hope. Choice 2 is the choice made by my pet owning clients, people who love their pets so much they refuse to accept defeat. These owners know that there must be a better alternative than death, and will do anything to find a way to fight against all odds to give their pets some chance at life. Using their pets' own natural healing abilities, these owners utilize therapies not offered by conventional medicine but instead choose holistic therapies that offer true healing. In Unexpected Miracles, I share with you just a few of the stories of these wonderful clients and their pets. Choosing hope when all seems hopeless, you will find their stories heartwarming, touching, and inspirational. I hope you enjoy reading their stories as much as I enjoyed sharing them with you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding of Life
I read this book years ago.My husband purchased this book for me, when my elderly dog was nearing the end of her journey. You can not imagine the $$ I spent on my Dog.This book taught me more about life and love then any I have ever read.I have given this book as a gift many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWSOME, a must read!
I am twelve years old, and have great dreams of being a vet some day. I always like to read vet books, and when I found this one at the library I was amazed, it look awsome. I read it, and thought it was even better. I am now looking to purchase a copy, one for me, and one for Nina,(a friend of mine) and one for Kendra(another friend). I think that this is an awsome book, and if you haven't read it you should.
Allan tells wonderful tales of his life as a vet, and the absured treatments that he used. Nothing was too absured, he even untwisted the cow when he couldn't untwist the uterous! He also uses acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
I don't have a pet:(, but if I did I would want a vet like Allan to take care of it for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book; rich in anecdotes and reports of healings
Allen Schoen and Pam Proctor bring us a rich, detailed spectrum of ways in which love, intuition and complementary/ alternative therapies can help animals small and large. This book is rich in anecdotes and reports of healings on physical, psychological and spiritual levels for animals with these approaches after conventional veterinary care had exhausted its potentials to help. Schoen integrates acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal remedies in his practice.

This is a truly wholistic book, addressing body, emotions, mind, relationships and spirit - both of the animals who were helped and of their owners.

Schoen illustrates his work with many heartwarming stories of his challenges and adventures with animals and their owners.

A typical example is Schoen's description of how he nursed a wild hawk who was paralyzed from the neck down following injuries from a power line. Schoen found ways to tame and heal this wary creature so that it could recover, eventually returning to his wilderness home. As with many of his animal patients, Schoen found himself learning and growing in the process of his ministrations.

" ...no creature can remain forever closed to the healing power of love.I knew that if I could establish an intimate relationship with a bird of prey, I could communicate with any animal, no matter how distant or fearsome it might appear to be.All I would need was a sensitivity of spirit, a willingness to open myself nonjudgmentally to a dimension of reality where feathers, fur, skin, scales, or hair are stripped away - and where the only language is love.

"Hawkeye had his freedom, and now I had mine.He had given me my wings, and I was ready to soar." (p. 71)

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in learning about ways of healing that extend beyond conventional veterinary care.

Product Description
This is a guide to natural healing which shows how to treat dogs' illnesses with natural methods as an extension to the allopathic methods veterinarians use. The book provides simple instructions on a wide range of homoeopathic treatments, such as artificially created magnetic fields, medicinal leeches, mobilization therapy, Bach-flower therapy, compresses and poultices, herbal therapy, oxygen therapy and acupuncture. Many medications and health foods work as well with animals as with people, and this book shows how to use common salves, tinctures, skin lotions and emetics, as well as herbs, teas and garlic. The treatments are arranged according to a dog's life cycle, from its needs as a puppy, such as a healthy nursery, normal weight gain and personality development, to late-stage geriatric care which can extend the life and comfort of a dog. Several case histories describe common treatments like weight problems, nose and throat inflammation, diseases characteristic of males and females, castration and spaying, aggressiveness towards other dogs in the house, and nutrition. Product Description

The GIRI – Groupe International de Recherche sur l´Infinitésimal – was created in 1986 with the aim to gather researchers toward the high dilution questions, such as hormesis, isopathy, homeopathy and the phenomenological and conceptual differences among them. This is the only international scientific society organised exclusively to promote multidisciplinary forums about these subjects. Since 1990, a series of books titled "Signals and Images" has been published regularly by the initiative of Prof. Madeleine Bastide (1935-2007), containing the synthesis of most interesting lectures presented in the GIRI annual symposiums.

This third volume "Signals and Images – Contributions and Contradictions about High Dilution Research" is a legacy from Prof. Madeleine Bastide to the GIRI members. Is a portrait of the GIRI scientific activities, which have been built to strengthen high dilutions and homeopathy through rigorously managed high-level research. It was organised in six parts: epistemology, experimental research / biology, experimental research / physics, clinical research, veterinary research and practice and an epilogue. All chapters were submitted to peer-review. To read it is an interesting way to reach up-to-dated knowledge about High Dilution Research, that has been developed in different parts of the world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good tips.
I like the book...but I wouldnt buy it again. I feel like the "medicines" that they suggest are usually very expensive and hard to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy
I am thrilled just having this book around. If there's a need, I'm sure it will be listed. There are tons of great, natural, healthy ideas of caring for your best friend. It is worth having around...just in case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference!
I am an herbalist by trade but as many of you may know, herbs work differently on dogs and cats then they do on humans. You cannot apply the same treatments and dosages to animals.

This book is helpful in 2 ways.First it contains a list of several ailments at the start with proposed treatments - but that section is so so.If you are looking for in-depth discussion of each ailment, this is not it.This book covers each ailment briefly, along with suggested therapies and their success rates/effects on the animal but it doesn't really explain the ailment that much since it covers so many of them. The best part of this book is part 2 where it covers many different herbs and supplements and the effects it has on animals and the proper dosages.

I would venture to say that this book is not for beginners. If you do not know much about Herbalism or herbs and supplements in general, this book will seem bad to you.It does not go into the detail about what each herb or supplement does - it assumes you already know that. There are plenty of books out there that cover that as well and it would be pointless for this book to cover it too. This book takes that knowledge and bridges it to the animal world. If you already have a knowledge of Herbalism, this book will tell you what you need to know about how it applies to animals. I have 7 dogs at home, and everyday there is some scrape or allergy or weird thing happening and this book never leaves my side. It has saved me hundreds on vet bills since I normally stock a lot of herbs at home anyway.

One thing - this book has a lot of great info for treatments of all types, but it is not a substitute for emergency care.If your animal has seriously injured itself and is bleeding etc - take him to the emergency room!

1-0 out of 5 stars Delivery complaint.
This is a really great book so I could only give 5 stars for it.

My complaint is towards AMAZON who keeps delivering their books in an unacceptable state, either with the hard covers smashed on the corners, or with pages either torn, creased or wrinkled from careless placement inside the boxes.

As a very frequent client I wish amazon would make more of an effort in delivering "NEW" products looking NEW, otherwise, it would be wiser to buy "used" books for less elsewhere.

I'm just not returning the books because its too much of a hassle, but will think again before buying more books if the problem persists.

5-0 out of 5 stars For The Proactive Horse Owner
What a dynamically different equine health care reference this book is! I have been fortunate enough to have Dr. Brennan care for my horses over the years so I have much faith in her knowledge and words. Her book explains alternative veterinary practices (which crosses over to help explain some of these practices for humans as well). She explains acupuncture, acupressure, aromatherapy, Bach flower remedies, herbs, homeopathy, lasers, magnetic therapy, and massage. It also contains helpful sections on accupressure that the lay person can personally perform. My copy was worth a wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of what can be done for your horse.
This book serves as a wonderful reference for the health of my equines. It gives very descriptive things that can be done. Recently when my warmblood foundered, I found the suggestions very helpful and empowering. I got to implement some of them right away and therefore made my girl more comfortable in this hard situation. I highly recommend this book as it takes the mystery out of many different approaches of equine care and gives one the opportunity to make informed, well thought out choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy for the paperback
I own the hardback edition of this book and am very pleased the paperback edition has arrived. Sent it to a good friend looking for the pressure points of the horse, which Mary does a great job of showing in the sketches provided. This is the best alternative medicine book I have found for the horse.
