Product Description

Horses are among the most complex creatures in the animal kingdom: so much can go wrong so quickly. And when it does, these delicate, injury prone beasts need swift treatment. Otherwise, a simple eating disorder might rapidly lead to death and a minor hoof injury to permanent lameness. To make things even more difficult, equine veterinary care is costly and insurance prohibitively expensive. That’s why any horse owner, as well as equine veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine, must have this ultimate resource on hand.
The Comprehensive Guide to Equine Veterinary Medicine is a thorough, carefully designed medical reference featuring four-color anatomical drawings by the most acclaimed veterinary illustrator Kip Carter. It covers all areas of equine health, including diagnosis and treatment, and delves into basic equine behavior and safety, preventive health care, and first aid. Twelve in-depth chapters outline the individual body systems, anatomy and physiology, and abnormalities. A Health Care section includes alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy, along with options for rehabilitation and physical therapy. Critical information appears in tables, charts, side bars, and bulleted lists for quick access.
In addition, there’s an informative history of veterinary procedures, followed by three valuable appendices with terminology, common medications, and advice for the first-time horse owner.
A selection of the Equestrian Book Club.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but shipping damage
The book was not packaged well; the hardback cover was bent and damaged in shipping. Unfortunately, I was unable to return it because I needed it for a class immediately. With the damage, it definitely was not worth the money I spent on it. Besides that, the book (undamaged) is a necessity for Vet Med.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
It's really great! Mostly every disease you search you'll find in here, and with very updated informations. The only "but" I found is that is a really big and heavy book, so is not something you can carry around... But with this amount of information, it couldn't be any different! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help Your Pet at Home
Written by two holistic vets, the Manual covers different treatment options for an impressive number of illnesses and health issues. You'll find diet, supplements, Western herbs, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and sometimes essential oils. There's even an "Author's Choice" section for each illness, so that if you're wondering which of various options to choose, both the vets list their recommendations.

The book is beautifully organized, fitting a tremendous amount of material into asmall format. Chapters include muscular/skeletal disorders; dermatological disorders; infectious diseases; immunologic disorders; endocrinologic disorders, etc. The illnesses are laid out alphabetically, with easy-to-see treatment options. Sidebars describe case reports with excellent Discussion, Treatment and Outcome sections.

At first I wondered whether the book would be too technical for me.But as I readalong, I was really impressed by the non-technical language, the thoroughness of the symptoms and treatments, and the book's excellent organization. Only the Chinese herbs sections are not accessible if you don't know traditional Chinese medicine, and this problem is addressed in an appendix with explanations of the uses and western names of the Chinese herbs.

Other appendices are helpful, too: "suggested oral dosages for herbs"; "suppliers" of herbs for easy ordering, and even a chart with acupuncture points. (If you know acupressure, you can use these points without needles.) For anyone doing chemo for cancer dogs, you'll get help here in figuring out a supportive herbal and supplement protocol.A fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition
This book is expensive but well worth its price.
The information is clear, and precise.
The pictures are very well presented.
It is a great tool --- other books by same author are excellent too!

4-0 out of 5 stars good so far
I honestly have not read much of it yet. I am only going through the intro, but I am finding it interesting. The only thing that has put me off so far is that they put in new chinese terms without defining them. I guess it is not important to know what they all mean, but I feel weird not knowing. It talks about upper, middle and lower burners and then talks about upper, middle and lower jiao. And I am guessing jiao means burner, but I would feel better if they stated that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Text
Alternative Veterinary medicine is a field to which I have not had much exposure. This book covers many topics in a survey manner with just enough detail.I would reccomend it as a starter text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Manual is manual and as such it serves as a fast guide of consultation.
All that that acts in the area of veterinary natural medicine needs a fast guide of consultation, of the type Five Minutes.
This manual serves very well for a first consultation and to guide the first treatment mainly by the use of Chinese and western herbs, diet, acupuncture and other therapies.
Therefore, it is an indispensable book to every veterinary naturopata.
And the index is of easy consultation and very complete, still containing the appendixes, very useful and practical.
I recommend a lot of this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Opportunieis in Veterinary Medicine Careers
While giving exact statistics, the interpretation is such as to gloss over the difficulties entailed in getting into Veterinary School. The author plays fast and loose with language, switching from students to applicants, never giving the number who actually make it into that first class. As a better source, check the book on admission requirements.
The chapter on the history of veterinary medicine is specious, spurious, highly imaginative, and anachronistic.Check the Oxford Classical Dictionary if you're really interested and want the facts.
The rest of the book is, as your blurb says, pretty complete and up to date.I think deciding to become a Veterinary Technician after two years at an unaccredited school earning $17,000 a year in order to play with kitties and puppies is a total waste of time.Go find a different profession, earn a decent living wage, leave the door open so you can transfer a 2-year-degree to a 4-year-institution 20 years from now, and with your increased earning power, indulge your madness of kitties and puppies on the side.
Considering there is nothing much else with hard information available, the book is worth a read.Buy it in conjunction with the Admission Requirement book, read statistics carefully, and it will be enlightening. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
My experience is that only quality books are published by Mosby as Mosby publishes college text books for the healthcare field. I have spent thousands of dollars with holistic and traditional veterinarians over the years-having some of my animals continue to be ill(auto-immune diseases and viruses are difficult).I have learned to educate myself and learn ways to keep my animals healthy through preventative care. Human grade or organic food has significantly made a difference as well as supplements. This book gives wonderful information regarding diseases and alternative herbs/supplements to use. I am careful,as not all herbs/supplements are safe in themselves and/or due to the harvesting country from which they come-this book gives a list of possible resources-most only available to the veterinarian, however, when I see a product from that resource on the shelf at the store or on-line I am comfortable trying it. This book was written for the professional and should be viewed as such. I recommend this book for enlightment of alternatives that may be available. I have seen many supplements at the "Health Food Store" for animals-this book has provided a reliable source for checking the ingredients purpose and safety. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook!
This is a great book and I recommend it. My husband and I teach a college course to veterinary assistants (and technicians, if interested) on exotic pet care. We are using this book as a textbook even though it is geared towards technicians. For the purposes of our course, we are toning down the anatomy and physiology, and the diseases sections to make the information less technical.

I do have one suggestion: if there is another edition, sections on degus and aquarium fish would be helpful.

I also have a concern: we do not consider skunks or prairie dogs to be exotic pets; they are wild animals or wildlife. We believe this because skunks are rabies vector animals and, even if vaccinated against rabies, will not be considered protected from rabies by DPH; thus whether a person is bitten by a vaccinated "pet" skunk or an unvaccinated skunk, the skunk will be euthanized. As for prairie dogs, their history is a bit complicated. They were illegal to own for a period of time (due to linkage to a monkeypox outbreak)and now a person has to get a permit to own one. We have distinguished between exotic pets and wildlife in our course, that is, between animals that are legal to own and mostly captive-bred and animals that are wild and mostly illegal to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition, husbandry, and step-by-step descriptions of common procedures range from very basic to advanced details
Bonnie Ballard and Ryan Cheek's EXOTIC ANIMAL MEDICINE FOR THE VETERINARY TECHNICIAN appears in its second updated edition to provide a fine introduction to exotic animal practices for technicians in classroom and clinic settings. The emphasis on exotic species makes for a fine survey that includes the latest practices in exotic animal medicine, with new information bird behaviors, aviary management, and more details on reptiles, skunks, prairie dogs and more. Nutrition, husbandry, and step-by-step descriptions of common procedures range from very basic to advanced details and makes this an important acquisition.
