2-0 out of 5 stars A continous list
Altough complete, updated and deep covering most of the aspect of clinical pathology, exposition of the matter is done in the list form, like a "things to buy" note. It looks like a student's lesson note and the subject is not treated in the usual way a book does, as say with sensed phrases that correlate one to the next following a logical thread. It is more a manual than a book and it is something that is impossible to read one paragraph after the other, and even harder to remember. Anyway it carries a lot of useful information and helped me whenever i needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
In my opinion, the best veterinary clinical pathology book.Great easy to read format.Consise, but providing more than just the basics.Great cases studies in the back that review topics. ... Read more

Interesting Facts from the Ten New Chapters

1. African Hedgehogs: African Hedgehogs can live up to 8 years.

2. Biology of the Immune System: Immune cells signal each other by means of small proteins called cytokines. Several hundred different types have been identified.

3. Cloning of Domestic Animals: The most common tissue used for cloning from adult animals is subcutaneous connective tissue.

4. Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Because of the lack of manufacturing standards, quality control, and known effects in animals, herbal medicines probably present a greater risk of adverse effects and interactions than other types of complementary and alternative therapies.

5. Disorders of Potassium Metabolism: Potassium homeostasis in ruminants is determined by the balance between absorption in the GI tract and excretion in saliva.

6. Equine Metabolic Syndrome: Hyperinsulinemia with normal blood glucose concentrations (insulin resistance) is the primary clinical finding in equine metabolic syndrome.

7. Poisonous Mushrooms: The period between ingestion and appearance of clinical signs often indicates the prognosis in cases of mushroom poisoning. If the latency is less than 3 hours, the signs are typically self-limiting and not life-threatening.

8. Porcine Circovirus Diseases: Porcine multisystemic wasting syndrome has been reported worldwide and has also been identified in wild boar.

9. Pseudopregnancy in Goats: The fertility of does treated for pseudopregnancy appears to be normal, so culling affected goats is generally not indicated.

10. Seminal Vesiculitis in Bulls: Vesiculitis in bulls is most often caused by bacteria and is most commonly identified in yearling bulls.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST reference out there for home or for Vet!
I pet-sit and am Red-Cross certified in dog & cat First Aid (which covers generally emergencies only, i.e., CPR, Burns, Seizures, Shock, Chocking, etc. This book covers all of those things INCLUDING treatments for all ailments (excepting a couple that a couple of my Special Needs' cats have, e.g., upper eyelid agenesis and post-surgery long-term care; and Radial Hypoplasia which hasn't really been a problem, but neithe are listed in the book.

I do, however, rate this a 10 star reference book - the print is kinda really small for me so I have to use a big magnifying glass - wish it came in big-print is all.I would buy that up in a split-second.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Merck Veterinary Manual
This is an excellent book, great information.Merck is well known for very informative medical information.Have used many of their books for nursing. My daughter will use if as a reference book for school & to expand her knowledge base.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superior quality work.
I found the Merck Veterinary Manual to be well written. It uses a type size that allows more information to fit in each page yet allows it to be seen with the naked eye. For the most part, the sections are clearly delineated and the explanations are concise.
All in all, a superior work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technical Manual of Veterinary Medicine
The Merck Veterinary Manual is a very technical, well-written manual of animal physiology and disease. To understand the writing you must have an extensive medical vocabulary. This book is not "light reading" but if you wish to have a working knowledge of animals and how they "work", this is the best manual I have read.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointment
This book gave me the distinct impression that veterinarians, too, have bought into the Wind-Cold-Damp metaphors that permeate TCM practice. When TCM vet herbal instructors can't explain how these herbs are scientifically working in our pets, and when they also can't assure that the ingredients are safe, I have to ask why vets are being taught and encouraged to sell these products.

I question the wisdom of veterinarians recommending products whose real, pharmacologic activities they know little about, and especially if they think that they are treating a disease caused by "Stagnation" and "Deficiency" rather than a legitimate diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Interesting book which accounts for this ancient discipline applied to animals. It is reassuring to know that animals can be healed this way as well!

4-0 out of 5 stars finally I get it!
Have been taking an extensive course in TCVM and was realy struggling with a few concepts, using this book as a back up to integrate with some Western medicine really helped me "get it"

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book of veterinary acupuncture that I know that it is for sale for the internet.
It is a simple and easy book of understanding, of the way that the students, in the course beginning, need to understand the Chinese medicine, mainly the acupuncture. But for an acupunturista he is also very useful, because it serves as much as a study book and of headboard as of fast consultation, in spite of his size to turn it a little difficult to transport. But I always drop it off at my clinic and I read it whenever it remains a time. Each reading that I do learns a little more. I already possess there is him two years and I still didn't get to read it entirely. It is the book that more has been contributing to my learning as acupunturist. I recommend and a lot to all that are interested in the subject: Chinese medicine and veterinary acupuncture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good primer
This is a wonderful text on complementary medical therapies for pets. I highly recommend it and as a fellow holistic veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) I found the information quite useful.

[...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with information!
Very thorough book on veterinary acupuncture. It seems intended for veterinarians which may make it hard to digest for the lay person. The theory is very well explained, the chapters on history and studies are informative and the illustrations of points charts are excellent. It lacks on the practical side though. It gives you general knowledge but does not go deep into how to do point selection in relation to your clinical findings.
Overall, an excellent theorical book. ... Read more

I am an Acupuncture Physician in Florida and I got this book to take care of my dog. This book is not for beginners ..try 4 paws 4 directions for starts.
Following up on the book I went to Dr. Xie's website [..] and wanted to order some herbs for my dog. Simple right? Nope, they would not sell me any herbs because I am not a vet.

So given another chance I would not buy this book. There are other Vet Acupuncture books that are just as good (more reviewed) if not better. I would have not given this guy my money given his position of not serving all his reader

5-0 out of 5 stars I took a gamble - it was well worth it
I am a small animal veterinarian and I have an interest in avian medicine and surgery. I have been looking for a good avian medicine book for a while. I saw this one and took a gamble based on the other reviews and some vague reference to this author from my university years. I am happy to report it was well worth it! I was really impressed with all the information especially the detailed drug formula at the back. This author must have a preference for raptors but it still contains a reasonable amount of general bird information as well. It also has detailed clinical pathology for a number of species of bird at the back of the book - i was not expecting that and that was really good. It is a book well worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avian Medicine
I have been a rehabilitator of raptors for 13 years, Avian Medicine is absolutely the best one single source of information I have ever seen. This book covers almost anything a rehabilitator would need to know for thebirds in their care. The color photographs give great examples of almostany avian ailment you will encounter. Many times rehabilitators will have abird with a problem that is not something you see every day. Avian Medicine by Jaimie Samour makes it much easier to identify specific ailments. Thisbook also covers drug dosages, blood chemistry, commonly used drugs andeverything else from incubation techniques to imping feathers. This is amust have for veternarians that are not avian specilists and avianspecilists alike. My vet once told me that birds are an elective in vetschool and she learned all she knows because of her personal interest inraptors. Without her personal interest she would not have acquired thebasic skills to care for these magnificent birds. Avian Medicine willdefinitely be an asset to her and anyone else with a passion for birds andtheir well being. I will recommend this book to all of my rehabilitatorfriends across the country and plan to buy another copy for my vet as aThank You for the volunteer service she has provided to the thousands ofraptors that have come in to our facility.

I know of two people that have already bought this bookfrom you in the last two days, just on my recommendations. Sigrid NollUeblacker, Bird of Prey Foundation, Colorado and Christine Macck AlaskaRaptor Rehab. If I am awarded the $50. certificate I will use it towards 2more copies of the same book for both of my vets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the Color Pictures
This was the first book that I had seen for Avian Medicine that was in color! That was what initially attracted me to this book.I also like the many tables that are spread throughout the book that organize diseases, drugs, etc... I also think that the book is pretty complete in theinformation that it covers. The only problem I see with the book is thatit seems a bit 'regional' as far as the information about specific birds. I had hoped that sort of information would be more diverse instead of justa few species.Other than that I thought it was very good and a nicereference manual to have in your avian medicine library. ...
