5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever!
I recently had to buy this book again because I lost my first copy (my coworkers probably stole it, it's that good! [j/k]).But I love this book. It's an excellent reference manual, love the format (charts make it easy to compare (e.g., symptoms of distemper and parvo)), nice organization, love the color plates...really, nothing bad at all about it!And for the low price, it's worth it a thousand times over.Buy this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed - Returned the Book
This book was created by two veterinary technicians who graduated in 1998 and published the book in 2000.It shows they have lack of understanding on many topics. The book is difficult to use and the charts are very cumbersome. For the lay person, I can see how this book may be useful, but for a licensed veterinary technician some of the information is out dated and very opinionated. It was not carefully thought out.RETURN IT WHILE YOU CAN! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Delivery
The book came in perfect condition just as the seller stated. I was given a tentative delivery date but the book came way before that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is a great resource for anyone who is in the veterinary field.Easy to carry every where you go.Keep in your truck, at home, at the kennel, clinic, at your desk.I love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Most Information per Inch
Although this book is pretty expensive, it is the best one stop place for almost every drug in veterinary medicine. The 6th edition is updated with a few more drugs than the 5th edition. Each page gives you information on the drug, including brand names, categories, use and indication, action, adverse effects, how it's metabolized once in the body, drug interaction, contraindications, dosages, and more! I shopped around quite a bit before committing to buy my edition and Amazon.com had the cheapest and best quality for my dollar and have all my resources in one place!

4-0 out of 5 stars great book, crooked cover
I guess this was an oops from the publisher/printer, the cover is on a bit askew, pages are ok and of course no problem with the content, overall a good value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great broad list of drugs
This is the desk version so it is small and compact to allow you to carry it with you and have easier access to it. However that does mean that there are more pages so it is quite thicker than the full size book. However, the book itself is a wonderful list of drugs - anesthetics, antibiotics, analgesics - listed in alphabetical order. It also lists pros, cons, and dosages for all situations. Great book to keep for a long time ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians
Ideal book for animal technicians and vet nurses.Doesnt provide all the information you will find in the Veterinary Nursing books but does get very descriptive in the areas it does cover.Information does move from canine and feline to large animal so not all chapters can relevantly be understood for specific animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Textbook for Vet Techs

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book
Very informative book.Until now it has provided me answers to all my questions. It has fulfilled my expectations, things are easier for me to understand.I will definitely recomand this book to all my colleagues.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horses have no place in this book
I believe that a vast amount of viable space is wasted on horses in this book. While they technically are large animals, they're so vastly different from cattle that they deserve and have their own books which are great.
I think this book isn't very well written and doesn't go into the pathology of diseases very well... at all.I hate the layout, and I think some ideas are just skimmed over or not mentioned at all.
I would not recommend this book, but the problem is there isn't another one out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference for large animal medicine
This textbook is, in my experience, the best single medicine reference for large animals. It is designed for the graduate veterinarian and is not easy to read, but contains an immense amount of information (plus references) in a usable format. The index is comprehensive, which is useful as some conditions are discussed by different authors in disparate sections of the text. The text is divided into body systems, then subdivided into equine and ruminant diseases. There are also useful rule-out lists for major clinical signs provided at the beginning of the book. The illustrations and photographs are black-and-white and are largely the same as the previous edition, but this edition contains well-updated text material.Detractors from this text include minimal specific treatment information for some disease processes and the lack of a formulary. It also does not cover swine or camelid species.Nonetheless, I find this book far easier to read and use (with more comprehensive information) than the similar Blood and Radostits text.If you care to invest in several texts instead of a single one, try the Current Veterinary Therapy Equine Practice and Food Animal Practice (very easy to read). However, if you choose these keep in mind that you may need more than one volume of each, as each CVT volume is not comprehensive. My copy of Smith is constantly at hand, and has seen a great deal of use since I purchased it.I recommend this book to any large animal practitioner as a necessary reference. ... Emergency care is one of the most important areas of veterinary medicine. Building on the success of the bestselling first edition, the international editors and authors have revised and updated the Manual to reflect the continued growth in knowledge in this vital area. The Manual remains a highly practical resource. A new chapter on vascular access details the placement and maintenance of intravenous, arterial and intraosseous catheters. Other new chapters feature: electrolyte abnormalities and acid-base imbalance; and transfusion medicine.

The growing body of knowledge and range of techniques in analgesia is reflected in a new stand-alone chapter. Medical and surgical treatments for gastrointestinal emergencies have also been separated to allow a clearer picture.

To aid fast access to practical information, techniques such as tube placement are now found within the relevant chapters. Additional photographs and illustrations serve to increase useability still further. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheeke has produced a research masterpiece!
Peter R. Cheeke has done a terrific job in condensing his and a great deal others' research into a book that serious rabbit breeders will consult for generations to come.

It must be noted that this book is not going to be an easy read for many people - particularly non-native English-speakers. Still, it is worth every effort you will make for this is the best available source of detailed information resulting from years of painstaking research.

Serious raisers will likely also want to subscribe to a bi-monthly internet publication at prma.org and to Rabbit Habit Weekly at rabbitfarming.com.

Two other books make excellent companions to Rabbit Feeding & Nutrition - Rabbit Production; Rabbit Farming Manual (available only direct from publisher at rabbitfarming.org).

Cheeke was a co-author on Rabbit Production.

Again, Rabbit Feeding & Nutrition is a must read for commercial rabbit producers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Covering most aspects of important large animal diseases, I believe this good can be very helpfull not only for veterinary students but also for veterinary teacher. Without entering in too much detail, who reads it will understand the basics of a specif disease. Obviously it could cover much more diseases and more deeply, but it would be much more expensive and probably put interested readers away.

1-0 out of 5 stars pages missing
i have reordered this book two times.it has pages missing. i raise bobby calves and the crucial pages that i index are missing. i am assuming that this book is not available complete which makes it useless. it was given to me as a gift from my son who spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 140.00.he is out the money and i am dissatisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars ignore those below
A fabulous mine of information, the textbook to turn to, it has pride of place on my shelf

1-0 out of 5 stars Of little use to the academic or practioner.
If you know the diagnosis then good descriptions of the clinical signs and pathogenesis are usually available. However having ploughed through the verbose text, which is in remarkably bad type face, you are rewarded with aminimal treatment section which is extremely frustrating. Copioslyreferenced the book is of little use alone requirring a good library and aserach engine to obtain up to date information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable for food animals. Hopeless for horses.
I bought the seventh edition of this book whilst a veterinary student, and it has gathered dust. Although there is a great deal of information in this book, which is easily accessed (an advantage over Smith's Large AnimalInternal Medicine), it is too brief for serious research and tooopinionated for a quick reference. This reviewer also finds the styledifficult to read. If the diagnosis is unknown, this is an almostimpossible book to refer to and the avoidance of differential listscontributes to this.

For the equine veterinarian, I wouldrecommend Reedand Bayly's 'Equine internal medicine', which is more thorough and betterwritten. For the food animal veterinarian, this book is a possible choice, but it is my opinion that 'Smith', despite its flaws, is a better buy. ... Read more

The phenomenal growth of public interest in alternative treatments for human

The phenomenal growth of public interest in alternatives to Western treatments for human disease and dis-ease has spilled over into veterinary medicine. Many holistic veterinarians and pet owners are now interested in using alternative remedies to solve health problems with their pets. Psychoactive Herbs in Veterinary Behavior Medicine is the first text on psychoactive herbal remedies for the treatment of behavior problems in small animals and provides:

Psychoactive Herbs in Veterinary Behavior Medicine is an important guide for board-certified veterinary behaviorists, as well as veterinarians and veterinary students with a particular interest in behavior medicine. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for veterinarians
The book is well referenced and organized and, as such, is a great tool for veterinarians to have handy.Even if they're not prescribing herbs themselves, clients have often put their pets on herbal remedies and, at the least, the clinician needs to know our current state of knowledge about the effects of these herbs. The gaps in the book simply point out where we have little empirical knowledge at this point.Hopefully, continuing research will make it necessary for Dr. Schwartz to revise it in just a few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars AVMA 2007 Lecture Excellent
I went to her lectures today and the notes--which she said were directly from the book--were excellent. I really enjoyed the talk and found several ideas that I'd like to try in practice for behavioral issues. Who wouldn't want to try St John's Wort or some other herbal for storm phobias, separation anxiety, urine spraying in cats, etc, in conjunction with or instead of anipryl, reconcile, or some other drug? I plan on ordering her book based on her lectures. I think it will be a valuable resource for alternative sources for common behavioral problems. As long as you try listed doses and warn your owners it's untested, I think the likelihood of severe problems (such as death) very low. I was very happy with her lecture and think the book will be just as informative.

I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE FULL OF OLD WIVES BREWS. DR. SCHWARTZ DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE AS TO THE CURRENT DAY USES OF PSYCHOATIVE HERBS IN ANIMALS. PLEASE BE ADVISED HER LACK OF KNOWLEDGE IN THIS FIELD CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HARM OR DEATH TO SMALL ANIMALS. I FIND IT OFFENSIVE SHE PROFESSES TO BE "AN EXPERT" AND THIS BOOK IS A FARCE! THIS BOOK IS AKIN TO A SUPERMARKET TABLOID.
