Product Description
A study of the transformation of southern Vietnam during the post-war period. Philip Taylor's ethnographic reserch in a southern village explored the local view of modernity. Here he shows the differing interpretations of the villagers' view of their own history and the sense of its decline. He presents ideas about colonization, social differentiation, the overlap of society and state, and the dilemmas of a southern village caught in such a culturally and historically huge moment as the attempted imposition of the northern Vietnamese political, economic and social identity after 1975. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and insightful.
As an Anthropology student at the Australian National University, Taylor spent two years in South Vietnam (92-94), then returned to this country in 95, 98, and 99. Faced with a unique southern identity, he decided to define the "idea of the South".

North and South Vietnam despite decades of postwar communist control are two completely different countries from the political, social, economical, and even musical aspects. In the first decade after the 1975 fall of Saigon, the communists controlled everything down to the toothpaste the Vietnamese used. Faced with poverty and income loss, southerners began to peddle their cherished belongings to the black market in order to survive. While goods in state stores were scarce, everything was available on the black market. Goods and money sent home from overseas Vietnamese swelled this illicit economy. As a result, the southern economy rebounded. A southern reformist, Nguyen Van Linh spearheaded the doi moi (renovation) policy officially moving the country to free market economy. The "modern" South thus replaced the "backward" North.

This unique southern free enterprise spirit did not sit well with Hanoi, which did everything to undermine it and ironically to profit from it at the same time. "Corruption, abuses of power, and administrative incompetence" became the hallmarks of communist Vietnam. However, the free southern spirit traced back to the pionering spirit of the South Vietnamese who settled in the Mekong delta some four centuries ago, lives on. If Saigon lost the war in 1975, it won the peace a decade later. Despite acknowledging past "errors", the communists still refused to release their grip on power.

The author is to be congratulated for his most interesting study and his keen observations of the South Vietnamese mind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sense of the war in a readable book
Over the past two weeks I have been reading the book America's vietnam war by Elizabeth Becker. This book not only talks about the war that our country has been involved in but also Vietnam's past and how the country became how it is today. Also this book goes way back to when the Chinese invaded and how some of their culture is still in the Vietnamese lifestyle. The Vietnamese soldiers really wanted to defend their country as they have so many times. While the south as you learn in the book felt that they were fighting America's war and often did not fight too strongly or simply refused to fight. Even though the south vietnamese were being payed 10 times the amount that the NVA, or North Vietnamese Army recieved the North had so much more determination. And that was all it took to win against America and it's allies. This book is a great history lesson of vietnam and surrounding countries slightly and one great book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent general history
I teach an AmCiv course at the college level on the literature of the Vietnam War, often to students who don't know much about the war and the period. So I am constantly on the lookout for a good, concise general history of the war, written without a political ax to grind. This is it. It won't win the Pulitzer Prize in history, but it won't take you six months to read either. It covers all the essential bases in a readable fashion. I was happy to find it. ... Read more

Product Description

Much rare material is incorporated in this unique account of urbanization in a developing country that was ravaged by war for twenty years. With due emphasis on the experience of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the authors present an account of what happened to the towns and cities of Vietnam between the establishment of Ho Chi Minh's socialist state in 1954 and the mid 1980s. The story is introduced through a general theoretical and empirical account of urbanization in socialist Third World countries. The book stresses the importance of the turmoil created by warfare in directing urbanization, but it also refers to the more conventially studied determinants of the process such as the institution of a planned economy.

As one of the few books highlighting the impact of warfare on urban settlements, The Price of War will interest all those interested in urbanization, development and South-East Asia.

This book was first published in 1986.

Product Description

Although the adoption of market reforms has been a key factor leading to China’s recent economic growth, China continues to be governed by a communist party and has a socialist-influenced legal system. Vietnam, starting later, also with a socialist-influenced legal system, has followed a similar reform path, and other countries too are now looking towards China and Vietnam as models for development. This book provides a comprehensive, comparative assessment of legal developments in China and Vietnam, examining similarities and differences, and raising important questions such as: Is there a distinctive Chinese model, and/or a more general East Asian Model? If so, can it be flexibly applied to social and economic conditions in different countries? If it cannot be applied to a culturally and politically similar country like Vietnam, is the model transportable elsewhere in the world? Combining ‘micro’ or interpretive methods with ‘macro’ or structural traditions, the book provides a nuanced account of legal reforms in China and Vietnam, highlighting the factors likely to promote, change or resist the spread of the Chinese model.

We bought this book for our daughter, age 18 months and adopted in Vietnam, thinking she would appreciate it when she was older.I'm sure she will, but we're all enjoying it now also.Having visited and lovedVietnam, we've been disappointed in some other children's books about thecountry. Some focus on negative differences -- the relative standard ofliving and the results of the war -- so we found this book's veryfamily-oriented description really refreshing. It's full of greatdetailed photos, which make it interesting for all ages. ... Read more

Product Description

How did the conflict between Vietnamese nationalists and French colonial rulers erupt into a major Cold War struggle between communism and Western liberalism? To understand the course of the Vietnam wars, it is essential to explore the connections between events within Vietnam and global geopolitical currents in the decade after the Second World War.

In this illuminating work, leading scholars examine various dimensions of the struggle between France and Vietnamese revolutionaries that began in 1945 and reached its climax at Dien Bien Phu. Several essays break new ground in the study of the Vietnamese revolution and the establishment of the political and military apparatus that successfully challenged both France and the United States. Other essays explore the roles of China, France, Great Britain, and the United States, all of which contributed to the transformation of the conflict from a colonial skirmish to a Cold War crisis.

Taken together, the essays enable us to understand the origins of the later American war in Indochina by positioning Vietnam at the center of the grand clash between East and West and North and South in the middle years of the twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction
It's impossible to tell the story of the Vietnam War without taking sides, so Sidney Lens doesn't bother. He was (and remains) against the war for moral reasons, depicting the US as an imperialist power that stood in the way of Vietnamese independence after the Vietminh defeated the French. Lens traces the history of US involvement, including the lies surrounding the Gulf of Tonkin, the rise of the peace movement, the spread of the war into Cambodia and Laos, and the Strategic Hamlets that the US military used to control the Vietnamese peasants they were supposed to be protecting.

It's surprising how much important information he covers in just 100-odd pages. The result is an excellent introduction to the topic. If you haven't read about the Vietnam War, start here. You'll get through this book easily, and you'll see the war for what is was. After this one, try Marilyn Young's "The Vietnam Wars," which covers the same ground as this book, but in much more detail. ... Read more
