Product Description
A fascinating book by a Vietnamese American examining his own cultural roots and discovering his bicultural identity. Part memoir and part scholarly analysis, the author offers a breath-taking behind-the-scene look at the Sino-Vietnamese culture with clarity and depth in the tradition of Joseph Campbell.

While offering the reader an amazing array of information about the four thousand year-old cultural heritage, this book confronts sensitive issues of religion, politics, cultural conflicts and societal dysfunction with the compassion and realism of a social worker and the humility of a former refugee.

This unique work can only be delivered by someone living in the in-between world of East and West. It is a one-of-a-kind reading to be cherished by both Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese alike. This is truly a ground-breaking work. ... Read more

Tran received more than five percent of the Democratic vote, and her differing views from those of Maria Cantwell (on the Iraq War in particular) drew the attention of the news media and local progressives . They escaped on a boat , then were picked up by a US Navy vessel. They were moved through various refugee camps, eventually making it to the United States , and settling in Orlando , Florida . Tran earned a Bachelor of Arts from Agnes Scott College in Decatur , Georgia , in 1988. After taking a year off to earn money for tuition, she attended law school at the University of Utah College of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor in 1992. Tran's start in the non-profit legal services field started during law school, when she began volunteering at Utah Legal Services, a nonprofit agency providing free civil legal services to low-income families. Product Description
The morning mist sits thick on the sea as a Vietnamese- American boy and his father climb onto their fishing boat. During the day, the father begins to teach his son how to haul in the shrimp that are so important to the family's livelihood. As the two work, the father's thoughts drift to his own father, half a world away, who works on a different kind of boat in the South China seas.

In lyrical prose, the author explores three generations of fishermen separated by time and place, but united by experience. Ted Rand's gorgeous watercolors capture theirlove of working on the water.

Product Description
Saito's study of Vietnamese-American high school students finds that motivational behaviors contributing to achievement are associated with closer affiliation with Vietnamese identity, as measured by language, generational status, endogamy views, and peer group selection. Other factors associated with achievement are the students' educational aspirations, use of time, and involvement in school. As in previous studies of Vietnamese students, socio-economic status in the United States does not predict achievement; however, the mothers' status in Vietnam, measured by education and occupation, has a gender specific correlation for female student achievement. Educational opportunity in the United States represents a greater socio-cultural shift for females, who had fewer opportunities in Vietnam, than their male counterparts. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The two best friends
This story takes place in 1985 at Zito`s house. Quint was his best friend. He always ate breakfast over there. He always carried a marble with him and they go to school and when they come home he had to eat dinner over Zito`s house. So they go and have fun eating stuff.

This story is mostly about two boys that always make jokes all the time about scrambled eggs. And is a story about food all they eat. Then Zito lost his marble and he said that Quint stole his marble but Quint did not take it. He told the teacher that Quint stole the marble that he liked so they started to yell at each other. Then school was out so they went home then Zito said he was very sorry. He said that he left the marble at his house so they became friends again

In my opinion this story was not that bad it was kind ofboring but it was goodnot awesome but who cares about marbles and eggs.

4-0 out of 5 stars fried eggs
Hello my name is scrabbled eggs is about a Vietnamese family comes and lives with Harvey Trumble and his family. The Vietnamese family comes to America because they are trying to stay away from the Vietnam War. There is a kid Harvey's age in the family and his name is Tuan Nguyen. Some things in America are new to Tuan, like a hair dryer, Tuan thinks it's a gun. He also thinks that hot dogs are really made out of dogs. My favorite part in the book is when they T.P. they town pig (statue) and get caught and Tuan has to figure out if he still wants to be friends with Harvey or not. If you want to find out if he does read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hello, My Name Is Scrambled Eggs
Do you like books about young people meeting other people from other countries? Reading Jamie Gilson Hello, My Name Is Scrambled Eggs will help you do just that. The main character, Harvey, and his family had to bring a family from another country in their home. The family that had to live with Harvey and his family were a family from Vietnam. He was so happy tohave someone of his own age living with him.Harvey had to bring him tohis school, and there the boy would have to go to school everyday. The boybecomes a good friend with Harvey.Harvey would help the boy speak betterEnglish. What I enjoyed about the book was when Harvey would teach the boyabout English on the computer.Another part of the book that I enjoyed waswhen Harvey started to become better friends with the boy and his family. I think someone should read this book if someone was interested in seeinghow it is like to have someone from another country living with him or herand what they were going through. I also believe that if someone was tobeing someone into his or her home, that person should participate in thefamily's beliefs. The person should also participate in activities that thefamily enjoys. Harvey helped the boy very much to understand the Englishlanguage. The boy would also participate in the activities that theHarvey's family had done with him.The boy liked where he lived as well asHarvey having a new friend living with him.I would also let someone fromanother country live with my family and I do understand what it would belike to live in a different place. ...
