Product Description
The Princeton Review realizes that acing the World History and Geography exams is very different from getting straight As in school. The Princeton Review doesn't try to teach students everything there is to know about world history and geography--only the techniques they'll need to score higher on the exam. There's a big difference. In Cracking the Virginia SOL EOC World History & Geography, TPR will teach test takers how to think like the test makers and:

Ace the exam by developing the study plan that is best for each individual student

Eliminate incorrect answer choices by using Process of Elimination and other techniques

Focus only on the material test takers will need to know to score higher

Test knowledge with review questions for each world history and geography concept covered

***This book includes 2 full-length simulated exams: 1 each for the End-of-Course World History to 1000 A.D. & Geography, and World History from 1000 A.D. to the present & Geography exams. All of TPR's sample test questions are just like the ones test takers will see on the actual exams, and TPR fully explains every solution.

The first permanent British settlement in North America was also the first capital of Virginia. But Jamestown was a killer - the swampy land carried diseases that killed thousands of colonists. One winter there was cannibalism! Trace the struggle that changed the Old Dominion from a deathtrap into the most powerful of the 13 colonies and home of many of America's Founding Fathers. This funny, colorful graphic novel will excite reluctant readers, prepare students for standardized tests in history and help homeschooling parents! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Va SOL support material
The 4th grade students in Virginia study their state's geography and history. ThisChester Comix series is an excellent, content tailored resource which correlates to the exact material on which the students are tested. With so many students and parents in our area preparing for SOLs this is the"go to" resource on my library's shelf. The pictures make it easy to see and understand the geographical features and the story arc is simple to understand. As a public librarian, I only wish these were published in a more robust hardback binding so they would stand up to all the wear and tear of a public library. I highly recommend this for school libraries, public libraries and home libraries.

Product Description
Parks finds that both spatial and social accessibility matter in connecting immigrants to jobs and that gender saliently shapes immigrant labor markets. She shows how geography sustains labor market segregation among immigrants and points to a reciprocal and reinforcing relationship between ethnic residential segregation and ethnic labor market segregation. This relationship is particularly acute for some immigrant women, possibly stemming from their gendered domestic roles and reliance upon neighborhood- and household-based social networks. The collective results of this study illustrate the importance of household, neighborhood, and geography in shaping the gendered immigrant labor markets of Los Angeles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an innovative way to read the Gospels
This is a wonderfully readable book that should appeal to a number of different audiences. It is an excellent way for people searching for a deeper understanding of Sacred Scripture, particularly the Gospels, but who are not looking for an overly scholarly approach or academic explanation of the text. There are several layers to the writing that in other hands could have proved awkward and complex. The writing seems simple, but is multi-layered in a very valuable way.I found myself learning about the Gospels, how they came to be, their relationship with each other and the ancient culture and did not realize I was picking up helpful tidbits at the same time.

Butler's detailed attention to the physical geography of Israel, its mountains, rugged hillsides and particularly the Sea of Galilee are a metaphor for the life of Jesus and a mirror for our own inner journey. This is the fifth gospel, which opens up the meaning of the four gospels in a way we have not known them. It is an innovative tool for exploring the Gospels.

In this fifth gospel approach, the author frames a number of significant events in the life of Jesus, the Easter Event, Sermon on the Mount, Transfiguration, offers insightful reflection on them and helps the reader draw out meaning for daily life. There are meditations and prayers at the end of each chapter that invite further reflection.

The author clearly has a love of scripture and a desire to explore the meaning of the Gospels in mind. She does this in a very "user-friendly" fashion that makes the book's real scholarship very accessible to folks who would shy away from other attempts.

Retreat centers should find it very useful and would be wise to make it available to its retreatants. The author's background in retreat ministry gives it a credibility that would encourage use for a small group discussion or at-home retreat.

Product Description
From its earliest days, the Virginia landscape has elicited dramtically contradictory descriptions. The sixteenth-century poet Michael Drayton exalted the land as "earth's onely paradise," while John Smith, in his reports to England, summarized the area around Jamestown as "a miserie, a ruine, a death, hell."

Drawing upon both familiar history and lesser-known material from deep geological time through the end of the seventeenth century, Stephen Adams focuses on both the physical changes to the land over time and the changes in the way people viewed Virginia. The Best and the Worst Country in the World reaches well beyond previous accounts of early American views of land with the inclusion of the fascinating and important pre-1700 sources, Native American perceptions, and prehuman geography and geology.

A blend of history, literature, geology, geography, and natural history, enriched by illustrations ranging from a dinosaur footprint to John Smith's famous "Map of Virginia," Adams's work offers an ecocritical exploration if the varied preconceptions that have shaped and colored the human relatyionship with "the best and worst country in the world"--the Virginia landscape. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Schools need this
This wonderful book reminds us all that there was life before GPS, and people really just had to stumble around before they got their geography right. There just wasn't the tech. Most important, that affected history, and critical political thinking of the times. Can you imagine Thomas Jeffersons guess about what was really the Louisianna Purchase? Just how big was America?

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice maps, but could use more details....
This is a great collection of selected maps from history -- my favorite is the one of a skinny North America, with the Pacific Ocean right on the other side of the Appalachains. The title is somewhat misleading, since the book is mostly a compilation of the maps that were published well before the Lewis and Clark expedition. The descriptions of each map are brief, and the author often references other maps that aren't included in the book; I find myself really wanting to see one depiction of the world or another that's described but not presented.Overall this is a pretty cool book, though, especially if you've never seen some of these old maps. ...
