Product Description
Viruses are the agent responsible for perhaps up to one million cases of cancer worldwide each year.Significantly, the study of viruses has also provided important clues to the causes and development of the most common human cancers. This volume presents an account of those viruses which have been directly associated with common human malignancies such as human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical carcinoma, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Burkitt's lymphoma. In addition, the biology and biochemistry of those viruses which have been shown to be capable of transforming cells in culture are described in detail. Thus adenovirus are discussed, as are the other small DNA tumour viruses - Simian virus 40 (SV40) and polyoma virus.Consideration has also been given to human T-cell leukaemia virus (HTLV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human herpes virus 8 (HHV8), amongst others.General themes such as the host's immune response to viral infection, virally-induced apoptosis and the use of viruses as a delivery system in gene therapy have been discussed.

Individual chapters have been written by an international group of experts in their own field of research.

Product Description
The Fifth Report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), summarizes the proceedings and decisions reached by the ICTV at its meetings held at the International Congresses of Virology in Sendal (1984), Edmonton (1987), and Berlin (1990). This report includes 2,430 viruses belonging to 73 families or groups, as well as as virus satellites and viroids descriptions. Each familiy description is providing all the information concerning particle properties, serological properties, and biological properties. The Fifth Report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) has been organized in the same way as the previous ones, yet it encompasses many more families and groups of viruses than previous reports. It includes diagrams grouped by their type of host, tables listing the viruses by alphabetical order, as well as by their host type and their type of nucleic acid and keys of family and group identification. The officers and menbers of the ICTV study groups from 1984 to 1990 are listed, as the current ICTV statuses and rules of nomenclature. Information on the format for submission of new taxonomic proposals to the ICTV is also provided. Indexes of viruses, taxonomic and authors' names are provided at the end of the report. ... Product Description
The book emphasizes the emergence and reemergence of human viral diseases, the need for a global early warning system of surveillance, and the importance of continued research to develop preventative measures.
Initial chapters provide a valuable perspective on the historical development of virology. The book presents the first account of the joint US-Russian effort to sequence smallpox virus DNA.
Concepts in Virology focuses on critical areas of contemporary virology, including viral hepatitis, influenza, polio and emerging arthropod-borne viruses including yellow fever, rabies, cytomegalovirus, poxvirus, dengue and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. In addition, the latest developments in antiviral drug therapy and vaccines for viral diseases (including AIDS) are discussed.

Product Description
There is great economic importance in producing disease-free plants, and as diseases are a major cause of plant disease internationally, an introduction giving an understanding of plant viruses is a useful resource for the study of this fundamental science. In this new edition, disease synptoms caused by plant viruses are described, followed by a description of procedures used to transmit viruses experimentally, virus purification and virus identification. The different ways in which viruses are transmitted biologically and plant virus epidemiology are discussed, as are the various methods used to control plant viruses. The final chapter is devoted to practical information and introductory exercises that will be of use to teachers for setting class practicals and to students in carrying out practical work. The book also includes a list of all plant viruses described to date and a glossary of plant virus terms. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great LittleLaboratory Manual
Despite that thismanual was written well over a decade ago, many of the techniques mentioned are still very relevant today such as tissu culture and. The text itself provides a great introduction into the world of virology research and I would recommend it to anyone who is considering entering into the viroology field. However, if you have been in the field for a while or wish to look at applications of PCR in virology this is not the manual you want. ... Read more

Product Description
Like other biomedical sciences, medical virology has undergone a revolution of diagnostic and scientific approaches through the advent of molecular biological techniques. Developing and maintaining an appropriate mixture of classical and molecular techniques for viral analysis is one of the challenges of medical virology today, and this volume addresses these issues. Topics covered include a broad description of "classical" techniques in viral diagnosis, nucleic acid detection by extraction and hybridization, use of the polymerase chain reaction, the application of various molecular techniques to aspects of the epidemiology of virus infections, and the principles and practical approaches to the analysis of viral evolution. The book will be of interest to students, researchers and professionals in medical virologoy, particularly hospital workers, microbiology, and molecular biology. ... Read more
