Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The KIAC School of Visual Arts (commonly referred to by its acronym, SOVA) is Canada's most northern accredited art school. It is located in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada at the fork of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers. SOVA offers the foundational year for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and a Bachelor of Design (BDes). The school combines an experiential, integrated curriculum that is studio-based with liberal studies courses. Successful students continue their degrees at their choice of four partnering art schools across Canada, including the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in Halifax. SOVA is a partnership between the Dawson City Arts Society, Yukon College and Trondek Hwechin. Each founding organization has equal representation on the governing council. Tombstone Mountains in MarchSOVA is located in Dawson City, an extremely remote location with a rich history. Home to the Han people for millennia, at the turn of the 20th Century Dawson City became the centre of the Klondike Goldrush and was suddenly the largest city north of San Francisco and west of Winnipeg at the time. Today, the town is home to many national historic sites, a self-governing First Nation, an active mining industry, and a diverse international community. During the summer months, tourism reaches a peak of 60,000 annual visitors, providing a major source of revenue for the town. The border of Alaska is only a few kilometres away to the west, and the Tombstone...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20306321 ... Read more

Excerpt: Higher education in Nunavut allows residents of this Canadian Arctic territory access to specialized training provided at post-secondary institutions. There are some unique challenges faced by students wishing to pursue advanced training in Nunavut, a vast territory stretching across Arctic Canada from Hudsons Bay to the north pole. The territory was split from the Northwest Territories in 1999, following a successful plebescite which affirmed Inuit desires to establish an independent political jurisdiction. Covering one-fifth of Canadas area and over 60% of its coastlines, Nunavut is linked by a common history and language to the Inuit regions of Nunavik (Northern Quebec), Nunatsiavik (Labrador) and the Inuvialuit Regional Government (NWT) as well as international links to Inuit in Greenland, Alaska and Siberia. The territory, with a current (2010) population of 31,153. There are no universities in Nunavut, but Nunavut Arctic College offers a smattering of degrees in conjunction with Dalhousie University - Nunavut Nursing Program, University of Saskatchewan - Nunavut Teacher Education, and the former Akitsiraq Law Program, recently and unexpectedly disabled by the territorial government, given its widely acknowledged successes and accolades.
