5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, great information, clearly written reference book
This was the best book on vitamins and mineral supplments that I have ever read!It is comprehensive, very readable, and has excellent information.I learned a lot from each write-up and it was written in understandable language.Very well organized so you can easily find specific subjects you are looking for.An excellent reference manual for every home!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional guide to improving health with proper nutrition
There's now extensive research on the benefits of vitamins and minerals beyond just avoiding diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies. This book is an excellent guide to understanding those benefits and avoidingsupplements that either are not beneficial or may even be harmful atexcessive levels.

The authors carefully describe the degree to which aclaimed benefit for each of 40 some vitamins and minerals is substantiated,as well as risks of toxicity, and dietary sources. There descriptions arebased on a balanced assessment of the available research.

The first partof the book is organized by vitamin or mineral, so you can see thecollected information on, for example, Vitamin E, in one place. The secondpart of the book is organized by disease or condition (e.g., cancer, fatigue, etc.) and discusses all the relevant vitamins and minerals, aswell as general nutrition issues related to the disease. This second partis very helpful if you're facing a particular problem.

The book includesan extensive set of references, as well as a good glossary and index. Someinformation has changed in the years since the 2nd edition was published, but it seems generally up-to-date. When the 3rd edition comes out, I'lldefinitely buy a copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A healthy read
This is a well presented, clearly written primer to each of the essential vitamins and minerals. Each nutrient is allocated two pages in which the author discusses; how it works, advice for supplementation and its therapeutic uses. As a bonus theres also an informative section on herbal supplements. The super high resolution photographs of the food are a pleasure to look at in themselves- so much so in fact that my three year old daughter
attempted to take a biteful out of one of the pages! There do however appear to be awfully many pictures of raw meat here which as a vegetarian i found quite repulsive. Some American readers may find the chapter on Vitamin E a little confusing as the British author talks about it's supplementation in terms of milligrams (mg) and not our international units (IU). That said, overall this handy book will come a welcome addition to any
health conscious persons bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Vitamins
The best way to include supplements into your life is to find them naturally in foods you love. A healthy diet will help you to have a fuller life. As a second option, you can choose to take supplements in pill form.

This book presents the source of the vitamin or mineral with the chemical name, preparations and RDA for adults. When you look up Vitamin B5 you will find a picture of dried apricots, you can also find this in peanuts, tahini paste, sesame seeds, pecans, walnuts, avocados, apples and dried figs. If you decide to go with the dried figs option, there is a delicious recipe in a book called Inter Courses that you will just love. I had never used dried figs in cooking before, but they are really good!

What I really liked about this book is the detail for each mineral/vitamin. On the same two pages where I found the apricots and pictures of other delicious foods, I also found a list of symptoms for if you have a deficiency of pantothenic acid. Stress and alcohol and large quantities of tea and coffee can reduce the absorption of pantothenic acid. Taken with vitamin C, you can help to strengthen your skin and promote healing. This is essential, say after surgery.

A wonderful and very helpful book you might want to keep someplace with your
recipe books. That way you can try to include as many of these wonderful foods into your diet as you can.

There is a great section on "other supplements" which explains Herbal Remedies. Please consult your physician before taking any herbal supplements as they can not be mixed with certain prescriptions.

For such a situation I recommend: Natural Health Magazine Instant Guide to Drug-Herb Interactions. This is a really handy A-Z listing of 150 common drugs with essential information on how they interact with herbs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let Nutritionists Hog This Book!
If you're not already a health nut, this book will at least make you more passionate about vitamins and minerals. This is not a dry text book for people with obscure degrees in vitaminology; this book was designed for the man or woman in the street.

Would you, for instance, care to know how alfalfa trims blood fats? How to use a common vitamin to winterize your skin? Which mineral is drained from the body by diuretic drugs -- and which foods to eat more of to reverse that trend? Which vitamin to bone up on when you're getting cramps in the calf?

The above list is a mere sampling of the fascinating things this book can teach you to help you manage your own health . . . rather than relying solely on D.O.C.T.O.R.S, who are trained by the system to prescribe drugs and suppress symptoms, not advise us what to eat to boost our immune systems and nourish our cells!

UNDERSTANDING VITAMINS & MINERALS will take you beyond the media-driven American consciousness into the exotic land of folk remedies through food. Discover what people in African villages use as a calcium supplement. Find out which citrus fruit to eat during a heat wave (dispelling forever the old myth of salt tablets for sodium lost during excessive sweating). Learn which of the B vitamins has been used by cutting edge gynecologists to help infertile women conceive. And so much more.

To transform their mission into an adventure, The editors of Prevention Magazine have been generous with eye-catching and educational images. Charts such as "Can Vitamin A Block Out the Majority of Cancers?" -and- "Canning: the Great Vitamin Massacre" are bound to inspire you to tip the nutrient scale more in your favor. The artistic dessert on page 58 will tempt you to try the "vitamin-C rich" recipe for Fruit Cup with Yogurt Sauce and serve it in champagne glasses to resident fussy kids. A raised map on page 125 -- U.S. states with the highest incidence of breast cancer as compared to the lowest levels of selenium in the soil -- will have you racing to read which foods are selenium-rich. There's a helpful illustration on nearly every page, and the sidebars pull you in with fascinating tidbits of vital information.

When I arrived here tonight, this Amazon page emanated "lonely and neglected." There was not even an image of the book cover, so I scanned mine and loaded the picture into the customer image box. It saddens me to think that so much of the foot traffic out there tonight is going to the fast food joints . . . and none of it to this page to get the information that could bless the reader with a longer life span.

Product Description
What if just about everything you thought you knew about supplements and health turned out to be... absolutely wrong?

Nutrition expert Dr. Brian Clement, director of the world-famous Hippocrates Health Institute, explores the various myths that have made supplements a "buyer beware" industry.

Supplements Exposed strips away layers of deception to reveal the truth about what millions of supplement users each year have taken for granted. For the first time, you will learn how:

* Nearly all supplements sold in the United States and the world are synthetics created in pharmaceutical industry labs. As a result, they can be toxic to your health.

* There are distinct differences between natural (plant-derived) supplements and synthetic (chemically-derived) supplements and how they each impact your health.

* Nearly all medical science studies of nutrients and human health have used synthetics rather than natural nutrients, which throws the accuracy of all negative laboratory results into serious doubt.

This provocative book guides you through the minefield of choices you face every time you buy vitamins and minerals. It shows you how to decipher product labels that are otherwise deceptive, how to choose naturally occurring (plant-derived) supplements, why recommended daily allowances spread confusion, and much more. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars partially correct book
Dr. Clement's critique of synthetic nutritional supplement is commendable. But his thesis that, instead, supplements be developed that are derived from natural food sources is highly questionable. After all, why not simple consume the foods containing the desired nutrients. Two exceptions: (1) vegans require supplemental B-12, and (2) supplemental vitamin D for the elderly residing at those latitudes lacking sufficient sunshine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supplements Exposed
EXCELLENT RESOURCE for Anyone proactive or researching what might be good for health, well-being, longevity or "Youthful Evolution". This book is very insightful and can help you make conscious well informed decisions. -Jeanne Nichols

5-0 out of 5 stars For Those Who Want to know the Truth about Vitamins....
This is the best and most factual book I have ever read on naturally occuring vitamins, rather than synthetic vitamins developed by Big Pharma and sold under the name of 'natural'.If you want true vitamins in addition to those you consume via eating, purchase organic full spectrum whole foods vitamins ... and do yourself a good deed by reading this book....will save you thousands of dollars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Buying
Dr. Clement is the real thing, and this book doesn't disappoint. It is informative, especially including information you won't get elsewhere. He rocks the mega-billion vitamin industry boat, which it needs, while giving you the cold, hard facts. I can't imagine anyone reaching for a drugstore bottle of vitamins after reading this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Supplements Exposed review three
I agree with the 2nd review.

There is one very glaring error which makes me wonder what others are there that I do not have enough knowledge to recognize.

The big error is his take on vitamin D.It is currently used in high doses. It is no longer considered toxic in high doses. It has turned into a product touted to help decrease the risk of cancer, heart disease, the flu, on & on.
It's the new miracle drug.

How can he put a 2010 publishing date on this book with such an error. What he writes about D is what you would have found in books many years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wondeful way to heal yourselves
My wife received this book several years ago and just loved it. Somehow it was borrowed and never returned. For Christmas 2008 I bought her another copy. It was her most favorite gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect condition
Item is in perfect condition.Never received from the first shipping, had to be reshipped & was received in just a few days.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth getting in hardcover
This is a very informative and useful book. Recommended daily dosages of vitamins and minerals are accurate and what is expressed never goes off the scientific deep end. I do wish it had pictures (sounds silly, I know). It's worth getting in hardcover, because it will get a read a lot. To everyone: good health, and love. Peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars A concise guide to Vitamins and Minerals
The theme of the book is highly commendable. There are two parts in the book; part I gives a good summary of the different vitamins and minerals for health and part II provides information on therapeutic prescriptions for healing.

Throughout the book, numerous clinical research are cited to support various nutritional claims. The inclusion of some interesting columns such as the "Using Vitamins/Minerals Safely" column in part I and the "Food Factors" plus "Prescription for Healing" columns in part II provide a good source of background information for the topics discussed in each Chapter.

Overall, the book is thoroughly enjoyable to read and is definitely a good source of reference that deserves to sit on everyone's bookshelf. It would nevertheless be complete if the author could inform the readers more ways to obtain the various important vitamins and minerals through the consumption or prepartion of NATURAL FOOD than taking the manufactured supplements, though this aspect has already been lightly touched upon by the author in part I of the publication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars KEEP THIS BOOK IN PRINT!!!
This book has greatly helped my husband and myself to prevent gastric reflux. We use carrot juice (organic, and in moderation), DGL (De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice) chewable tablets shortly before meals, Slippery-Elm throat lozenges, etc.

Others I know have also been helped greatly by this wonderful book!

We also use digestive enzymes, and pro-biotics (acidophilus/bifidus), etc.

It's amazing how much USEFUL information is packed into this small book, that is very readable, and I get no commission for saying this!!

My husband and I had Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) attacks that were lessened by taking care of our sinus conditions, but we couldn't get the attacks to completely stop, until we addressed our gastric reflux, by using THIS BOOK'S IDEAS!!!

Gastric reflux is so often treated with acid blockers, that have dangerous side effects, such as not digesting protein and calcium, and not being able to absorb Vitamin B12, leading to nerve damage (peripheral neuropathies!!).

With the DGL, acid production is not stopped, but the cells are protected from the acid. See Dr. Murray's book for details!

Natural ways to improve your nutritional health

When it comes to health and nutrition, women have unique needs; they experience more health problems and visit the doctor more often than men. Women are also at particular risk for major nutrition-related health conditions, including heart disease and breast cancer.

Now, leading nutritionist Leslie Beck presents a comprehensive, complete guide to women’s nutritional health care, backed by the latest scientific research. The Ultimate Nutrition Guide for Women is written for all women–whether you want to stay well and lower your chances of disease or learn to manage your specific health condition through diet and supplements.

This book looks closely at how to manage the various health concerns of women–from migraines and anemia to polycystic ovary syndrome, fibro-myalgia, and urinary tract infections–with safe, natural methods. Beck outlines the symptoms, risk factors, and treatments or prevention strategies for the most common health conditions, then offers recommended dietary solutions, vitamin and mineral supplements, and herbal remedies. She explains how food affects your weight, energy levels, and the health of your body–and provides practical choices that will help women of all ages lay a foundation for better nutrition habits and long-lasting health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good solid reference
This book is a great tool for referencing what women need as far as daily intake of vitamins, minerals, etc, and where to find them. She touches on a few subjects that affect women's lives, such as PMS, pregnancy, and even eating disorders. She tries not to get too deep into those, as I'm sure that would require another book or specialization altogether. However, what she discusses gives you enough information to make decisions on what foods you put in your body.A good solid reference for women who care about that. ... According to new research, optimal doses of vitamins, minerals, and herbs can improve health and reduce chances of developing many diseases and disorders - regardless of one's age or health status. Until recently, vitamins and minerals were considered important primarily for avoiding deficiency-related medical disorders. Now Dr. Art Ulene shows new evidence that indicates higher levels of selected nutrients may actually slow or prevent the physical deterioration associated with aging - a process once considered inevitable. He also explains the supplements that may help prevent some of the most common chronic diseases and illnesses associated with aging - from heart disease and cancer to cataracts. In fact, he explains, some supplements may reduce heart attacks by 40 percent and cancer by 20 percent, while increasing lifespan up to six years. Others can protect against the risk of high blood pressure and reduce birth defects. ... Read more
