PREFACEBy Kathy A. Detweiler, M.A., R.D.Kathy A. Detweiler is a registered dietitian with a Master's degree inNutrition Education. She Is a member of the American DieteticAssociation, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Dietetic Associations andSociety for Nutrition Education. Currently she is in private practice, counseling patients on an individual basis and consulting for long-termcare facilities.

It is refreshing to find a book with the single purpose of presenting healthfacts. There are no gimmicks, no hidden agendas, no products to sell. TheInformation is given to provide a basis for an individual to makeIntelligent decisions about their health.

The Krimmels don't tell you what to do, but provide knowledge aboutnutrition and health that every person can use to modify their diet and toenhance their health status in ways that are appropriate for them. Sooften we are told what to do and everyone can improve his/her healthimmediately, as if passing under a magic wand. In reality, everyone is anindividual and the choices that we make for our health are just that -individual choices.

This book is meant to be a wealth of information to further educateourselves so we can take care of ourselves. From a straight forwardexplanation of the nutrients we need for healthy cells, to the foodscomposition table which concludes the book, the information is concise, useful and health-ful.

Over 100 Health Information Free 800 number Hotlines In the book are anavenue In themselves to more help and support, especially for those with aspecific health problem. The easier it is to reach out for help the morelikely one is to do so. Calling an 800 number surely is easy, convenient andinexpensive.

The authors list the basic nutrients with their purposes and continue withthe simple truth of weight control with an Interesting activity forestimating how many calories you need daily. Vitamins and minerals aredescribed in detail with their functions, sources and related deficiencies.Guidance for the decision to take supplements is provided. The importanceof fiber and the types of fiber are clarified. Water is sometimes theforgotten nutrient, but not here. The many functions of water areexplained and it is clear why our cells require this nutrient.

A very important skill, I believe, is being able to calculate the percent ofcalories from fat in a food. This concept is thoroughly explained. Thecalculation is very easily made although some people don't believe thisuntil they have repeatedly used the equation to become familiar with itand can then use it with ease.

The composition of foods table clearly tells you the calorie content andgrams of fat in each food. Browse through the foods table, becomefamiliar with it and keep it handy for looking up foods. As you graduallyincrease your knowledge of what your diet consists of, and how you mightlike to change your diet, it will become easier to make the choices foryourself!

The journey toward good health should not be a chancy experience. Youneed reliable information. The Vital Health Facts can be an essentialcontribution to your health-ful journey. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Everything
I almost agree with the other reviewer of this book. As a recently diagnosed diabetic requiring insulin, I have found this book a crutial tool in my management. It gives the weight of the food for the nutritive values, almost everything I need to count is here. I have owned the book for almost 7 years and I came back looking for an updated copy and sadly I found none. I want to see the Carb breakdown. (Fiber/Sugar) It's not unheared of for a revision to wait 12 years, it is much needed. I recommend it for anyone needing to weight their portions and count everything they put in their mouth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book from the Krimmels
A complete book containing all the information I really ever need easily accessible. Most reference books dealing with the breakdown of foods usually leave something I need out. As far as I can see this book has itall. A very welcome addition to my library. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as "regions"). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of "economic population", as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this "economic" definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city's marketing and distribution value vis-a-vis others. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable reference work
This book provides practical advice on the most effective nutrients to prevent or alleviate ailments, their best food sources and the daily nutritional needs. It also explains how vitamins and minerals work in the body and the symptoms of their deficiency.

The introduction explains in detail how they work, how to maintain optimum health, the particular nutrients that various groups are most likely to need, healthy eating and the ins and outs of taking supplements.

The next section deals with individual Essential Nutrients under the headings of how it functions, what ailments it can remedy, the deficiency symptoms of that nutrient, vital food sources and the recommended daily allowance. Vitamins and minerals from Vit A to Zinc are covered here.

There are also short sections on other supplements like Amino Acids, Co-Enzyme Q10, Acidophilus, Bioflavonoids, Boron and various herbs. Then follows an A - Z of symptoms and their remedies, from acne and allergies to varicose veins. It recommends which vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to use or to avoid for every particular symptom.

This very valuable reference work concludes with a glossary and index. I recommend it as a reliable and easy-to-use guide to help the reader combat ailments and maintain health and balance. ... Read more
