5-0 out of 5 stars use it correctly
When used as intended, this book is awesome! My son has been reading these words daily since he was 4 years old.He loves it.The purpose of this book is not to be used as a picture book read in one sitting. You leave it propped up (it is a stand-up book) and display one word a day.You read the definition and do the little activity at the bottom. It is quick, simple, and kids really do learn vocabulary.

That's not to say it is best as the ONLY source of vocabulary, (of course talking and reading are going to be the best) but it is fun for kids.I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre edutainment
This might be the least engaging children's book in my house.I could carp about the mediocre examples and illustrations, but the bottom line is, my son would rather read about bugs or something. It's hard for me to imagine anyone reading "Vocabulary Power" a second time.

Every kid is different. But I think for most kids, it's probably best to keep lots of great storybooks and nonfiction lying around. What really grows a person's vocabulary, at any age, is the habit of reading challenging stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, practical resource
This is a very helpful, well organized, easy to use resource to help get your Hebrew vocabulary up to speed. If you want to use the various "readers" guides and running dictionaries you need to know the most basic Hebrew words. This helps organize that task for you.

If you've gotten the flash cards for Biblical Hebrew from VisEd or Pratico's version of flash cards, this book can help you with your plan of attack in using them. Pull the cards dealing with a particular frequency and you are on your way. Or, make up your own cards based on this book's frequency counts.

I got this back in the 1980s at seminary and have enjoyed it since. My Hebrew "comes and goes" over the years, and this gets me back on track in a short amount of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good product
Indeed, it is a good product.
Quick and easy access to zillions of words and corresponding definitions.
Practical, friendly, condensed.
It serves well its purposes, and it delivers what it promises.
Get a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vocabulary Triage
Life is triage. We all must choose how to do the most in a short amount of time.A Student's Vocabulary for Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic helps by presenting the words used most frequently in the Hebrew Bible.Using this book, students of Biblical Hebrew can learn first the words that they most need to learn. If only other tasks in life came so splendidly prioritized!

If you are interested in a similarly prioritized audio vocabulary builder for Biblical Hebrew, consider Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary: Learn on the Go.Learning by reading differs from learning by hearing, so you may find it most productive to use both products concurrently. For a somewhat prioritized audio vocabulary for Modern Hebrew, consider Vocabulearn Hebrew: Level 1 (Language Power), Hebrew/English: Level 1: VocabuLearn: Original Format,Vocabulearn Hebrew Level 1 (VocabuLearn), or VocabuLearn: Hebrew, Level 1 (all four different formats of the same basic product).

All these products are variations on flashcards. For more conventional paper flashcards (also prioritized), consider Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary Cards (ZONDERVAN VOCABULARY BUILDER SERIES) or Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary Cards or Modern Hebrew Vocabulary Cards: Academic Study Card Set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what is needed
As others have said, this is a terrific vocabulary builder, containing both Hebrew and Aramaic words. The back contains an index which I have found wonderfully helpful as an aid to finding the root in drop-letter or hollow verbs.Sometimes BDB gives far too much information. The one minor flaw is that feminine nouns aren't identified as such

4-0 out of 5 stars Little Book for the Money
This is a good book for the money. It has good transliteration, and it gives a short definition of the word. You will not find every word in the Bible in this book because of its size, but the book is well worth the money. It is a little tricky trying using the index if you are not familiar with the Hebrew alphabet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun way to learn new words
My son really enjoys this. I bought it so we could do a 'word of the day', but he likes it so much we have a 'word of the morning' and a 'word of the evening'. The built in stand allows us to leave it sitting out where we can see it and often review the word of the morning/evening.

This book helped me to learn new vocabulary words, but it wasn't boring. I like learning new words.I like it because it shows me how to pronounce the word and then it tells me the meaning.I try to guess the meaning before I read it.We also played games with my brothers; we would take turns going through each vocabulary word to see if we knew the meaning. If we knew the meaning, we got a point. The first one to get five points won. This book made learning fun.

Parent's Note:This user-friendly book is good for parents who are home-schooling or for anyone wanting to provide extra help to their child. The spiral binding and stand-up format makes the book easy to handle, because it rests easily on any tabletop. If you make learning the words into a game, the kids really enjoy themselves.I highly recommend "Vocabulary Power Grade 3."

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome per a four year old
I bought this for my son so he could learn a "word of the day" for future use. (I had found it at a store and it was the only grade level available.) The words didn't seem to me, to be of a third grade level; twinkle, surplus, disgusting. The pictures for each word are colorful and give the meaning and a sentence. My son enjoys his "word of the day" so much he often chooses to do them on weekends as well. I think this is a great product and recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Vocabulary Booster
I have tried many methods in learningn new words and memorizing them, but most of them were useless or unsustainable. This book not only provided me an effective way to learn new words, but also revived my interest of learning new words. The words in the book are useful. It would be helpful to those who might be writing the SAT or are just beginning their test preparation with very limited vocabulary. I highly recommend it.

Product Description

You should know at the outset what this book does _not_ attempt to do. It does not, save to the extent that its own special purpose requires, concern itself with the many and intricate problems of grammar, rhetoric, spelling, punctuation, and the like; or clarify the thousands of individual difficulties regarding correct usage. All these matters are important. Concise treatment of them may be found in THE CENTURY HANDBOOK OF WRITING and THE CENTURY DESK BOOK OF GOOD ENGLISH, both of which manuals are issued by the present publishers. But this volume confines itself to the one task of placing at your disposal the means of adding to your stock of words, of increasing your vocabulary.

It does not assume that you are a scholar, or try to make you one. To be sure, it recognizes the ends of scholarship as worthy. It levies at every turn upon the facts which scholarship has accumulated. But it demands of you no technical equipment, nor leads you into any of those bypaths of knowledge, alluring indeed, of which the benefits are not immediate. For example, in Chapter V it forms into groups words etymologically akin to each other. It does this for an end entirely practical--namely, that the words you know may help you to understand the words you do not know. Did it go farther--did it account for minor differences in these words by showing that they sprang from related rather than identical originals, did it explain how and how variously their forms have been modified in the long process of their descent--it would pass beyond its strict utilitarian bounds. This it refrains from doing. And thus everything it contains it rigorously subjects to the test of serviceability. It helps you to bring more and more words into workaday harness--to gain such mastery over them that you can speak and write them with fluency, flexibility, precision, and power. It enables you, in your use of words, to attain the readiness and efficiency expected of a capable and cultivated man.

Help students improve their mastery of the English language and acquire the keys for understanding thousands of words by studying Greek and Latin prefixes, root words and suffixes. This second in a two-book series contains three sections (prefixes, root words and suffixes), but each section has the same format. Each of the lessons include: 2 to 4 prefixes, suffixes, or root words along with meanings and sample words, 10 new vocabulary words that use these word parts, definitions and sample sentences for each new word, and a one-page worksheet that presents a variety of ways to apply knowledge and expand understanding of the definitions and uses of the word parts.

In addition to the extensive student section, the book includes considerable reference material to help the instructor. This includes: a comprehensive listing of prefixes, root words and suffixes, their meanings and sample wordsextra words to use with each lesson, open-ended worksheets that can be used with any lesson, and additional lesson ideas to supplement your word study.

This is one of the most complete, usable presentations of vocabulary development using word parts you will find. A knowledge of word parts gives students a head start on decoding words in reading and testing situations. A red hot vocabulary program!

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy "Barron's Essential Words for the GRE" instead
This book has poor definitions for words. There are less than 500 words in this book, it doesn't have review activities, and there are many typos. Many of the definitions for words are only one or two words long--grossly oversimplifying the meaning of the word. Some of the definitions are even misleading.
On the bright side, it only costs $4 to ship the book back to the company with the receipt and they will refund your misguided purchase, though not the shipping.

Instead of the Kaplan book, I would recommend:

Barron's Essential Words for the GRE
It has 800 words, longer and better definitions, multiple example sentences, and a review every 10 words. The review consists of 10 matching questions, 10 fill-in-the-blank, and 5 questions asking whether the vocab word is used appropriately in a given sentence. After the 800 words there are 300 word roots that also have review activities.

If you want to another book for additional review, I would recommend:

The Princeton Review's Word Smart for the GRE
It is similar to Barron's but the only review activities are matching, and the definitions are slightly inferior. However, it has some words that are not in Barron's top 800.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indeed, it's a score-raising book!
I have been working with the vocabulary in this book and it is very useful if you make vocabulary flashcards, writing the synonyms and your own sentence using the word. Thus, you raise your GRE vocabulary so you do well on the verbal section of the GRE and also helps you start actually using those words in your own writing.

As an International Student, I can say this Kaplan GRE Vocab Workbook helps you raising your score. If you have a GRE study group, it can be quite fun to practice writing your own sentences and sharing with your friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review By Jade Caines, Emory University
Review by Jade Caines, Emory University, for Michigan State University Libraries

http://www.lib.msu.edu/corby/reviews/posted/seals.htm

In today's climate, accountability is paramount. Specifically, within education, high-stakes standardized exams are commonly used to measure student knowledge of key domains. Undeniably, reading comprehension is necessary for successful performance on these exams. But how does vocabulary development affect reading comprehension abilities? Research shows that poor reading comprehension skills often stem from low vocabulary skills. Vocabulary Power, a program of lessons targeting students who use African American Vernacular English, aims to address this gap through research-based strategies and practices for improved reading abilities.

The national debate over African American Vernacular English (AAVE), affectionately called "Ebonics," dates back to 1996 when the Oakland School Board brought attention to instructional barriers schools faced in teaching African American school children Standard American English (SAE). Vocabulary Power addresses these barriers by providing 20 weeks of lessons to help students bridge the gap between AAVE and SAE.

The program includes a teacher manual and a student workbook. Many of the books used in each lesson incorporate African American cultural elements or are written by African American authors. This distinguishes Vocabulary Power from other vocabulary development programs. By making each text relevant to AAVE-speakers, student engagement will increase, thereby improving word retention and reading comprehension. Below are some of the books used in Level 1, targeting students at a third-grade reading level.

Richard Wright and the Library Card by William Miller
The Stories Julian Tells by Ann Cameron
Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World by Mildred Pitts Walter

The teacher's manual begins with a brief introduction that previews key instructional strategies used throughout the program. Next, the authors describe a sample 5-day schedule that details how teachers should use the vocabulary program. Each week consists of 5 days of vocabulary instruction with a different text each week over a 20-week span. Day 1 previews the lesson, allowing teachers to display the 15-word list for that week. Students recite the new words collectively and write them down in their student workbooks. Next, the teacher reads the words and definitions aloud, as students read silently. Students then take turns reading sentences containing the vocabulary words aloud. Finally, for homework, students will study the words and definitions and complete vocabulary activities.

Day 3 and 4 follow a similar format, interweaving key reading strategies such as making predictions and using context clues. Furthermore, students develop vocabulary skills through identifying multiple meanings and analyzing prefixes and suffixes. Engaging vocabulary activities vary from crossword puzzles to bingo. On the final day of the week, students are given a 15-item assessment. The items include matching exercises, identifying words that do not belong in a given list, and multiple choice items. Each week follows the same format for a total of 20 weeks--the program is very repetitious, making teacher usage easier and student success more likely. Every 4 weeks, students spend a week reviewing for a 28-item multiple choice exam.

Vocabulary Power is a unique vocabulary development program. Few vocabulary curricula target students who use AAVE and develop other important reading comprehension strategies. Also, each lesson previews the next week's vocabulary words within classroom activities, familiarizing students to upcoming words. Finally, this program steers away from rote memorization, giving students an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary through word etymology. These practices can improve word retention and reading abilities, lessening the gap between students who use AAVE and students who use SAE.

The activities are varied and engaging. Vocabulary development is not simply a boring, mundane process that students eventually dread. Unlike other programs, Vocabulary Power engages students, increasing their intrinsic abilities to learn new vocabulary words. Overall, this program gives power to students who are historically overlooked. Every teacher who instructs students who use AAVE will greatly benefit from this tremendous resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-have for Middle School
This book is the best vocabulary builder I have come across; it is great for the ISEE, PSAT, STAR and SAT. The Illustrated Word Smart has the added bonus of containing some GRE vocabulary as well. Visual space and creativity made it easy for my middle schooler to learn 250 words in two weeks. Love hearing expanded vocabulary usage in every day conversation. This is a fun and painless way to introduce new vocabulary and a way to review previous school lessons. My four children ages 15, 13, and 11 and 9, enjoy the pictures and humour - - they banter about the examples. But, most importantly--they remember the words!

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't deliver
Illustrations should be a great help with vocabulary acquisition, in theory. But in practice, unless you limit yourself to nouns, it takes some real inspiration to illustrate abstract words.

There is little inspiration in this book. Check out "assiduous" for an example of the artist's failed attempts to make difficult words more memorable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Illustrative but not very didactic.
I would not recommend this book as a study aid to learn vocabulary words for several reasons.Although the book's front cover suggests that somehow visual cues provided by this book will help you learn vocabulary words such as duplicitous, fastidious, and heinous it did not seem like that when I read through this book. The illustrations all seem to come from the same artist and are not particularly pleasing to the eye, at least not my eye.The basic template for all the words in this book contains an illustration of one or two people. When the conversations will simply say a line that is supposed to remind you of the word (usually doesn't include the word) that is meant to be taught. You cannot look at any illustration alone and relate it to the word that is supposed to be taught. The way the book attempts to teach the words is through pnemonic techniques made up by somehow combine the word and an inkling of the definition. This is a terrible book for people over the age of 12.Just get yourself a regular vocabulary book and avoid the tragic attempted teaching style this book has used. With good enough net surfing you can find the actual helpful stuff this book has, such as crossword puzzles, online somewhere for free.

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD BAD BAD
Yeah, this book mught be useful if you have the vocabulary of a paper cup. I genuinely couldn't believe the words in this thing. Who is this for? Eleven-year olds? Seriously-AVOID.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun way to learn new words
The book has only about 250 - 300 words (250 are offered as key words which are illustrated and other related words are mentioned in a box underneath the illustration).Words are arranged in 17 sections and each section is followed by several drills where you can test your understanding of the words. At the end of the book are puzzles for more word fun. ...
