Product Description
With college costs rising faster than inflation year after year, getting that college degree is becoming less and less affordable for many students. Many of them take out sizable school loans only to find themselves overburdened by onerous loan payments. So many students look for part-time jobs while they're in college. Most of the well-known jobs are low paying jobs. Fast food and retail employ a lot of college students, but the wages are at or barely above minimum wage. The result is long hours for low pay-hours that could have been spent studying or partying. This book shows students how to find the unusual jobs that pay much more than average. The author draws on his expereinces while he was a college student. The stories in the book are true; the examples the author gives are real. The author used these same strategies to earn significantly more than minimum wage while he worked his way through college. This book will be helpful to college students and high school students trying to save money for college. The information will also be welcomed by parents who are writing the checks for their students' college expenses. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book of Majors
A waste. A huge price for something that is immediately out of date. Don't buy it. Find it in your counselor's office or at the library instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept that works
Son number 3 is now beginning the multi-year process of finding both a college and possible profession.Unlike my other two, he likes many different subjects. This unique reference starts with common majors that most people are familiar with and uses the same descriptive format for each to allow easy comparison. Each entry starts with "If you like....then you might like this major."It then describes a typical curriculum for that major, suggests other majors that you might like that are not as well known in the same "field," and ends with possible REAL JOBS you might apply for having an undergraduate degree in that major.Suggestions of possible starting salaries are also included. My son's favorite part of the entries was looking at what other majors might fit the interests of someone who likes "major x."I also found it illuminating as I am contemplating a return to school and a major in history and secondary education.I found out I might like to major in "Medieval and Renaissance Studies," rather than straight history.Lastly, on their website, you can look up what universities currently carry the more unique majors. All in all, a helpful, interesting, easy-to-read, non-intimidating resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars great guide
This guide was extremely helpful to my 16 yr. old daughter who is trying to sort out which classes to take her last 2 years of high school and how they would relate to various possible majors. Since she is looking at a number of very different majors, it gave her some idea of how she would use her talents in different areas. She actually told me about the guide and asked me to purchase it after seeing a friend's copy at school.

3-0 out of 5 stars best for a reference library, clueless high school junior, or multiple-student family
Because this 1,314-page book covers such a wide range of majors and the average family or college aspirant is likely to have narrowed his or her interests down to just a few, this book is best suited for the reference shelves of a high school guidance office where a diverse cross-section of readers can access it.

However, it's not expensive, so perhaps worth the required nickels from the family or student who doesn't mind tossing them at the CollegeBoard, a dependable provider of data and interpretation to college-bound students. This is especially true for the high school junior who begins to think about *where* he'll go to college with little or no clue for what he'd actually like to study there (this reviewer still assumes the not-unanimously-accepted link between college and study). If your family has multiple college-bound high schoolers within a few years of each other, the data and trends presented in this book are not likely to change substantially from year to year. So, a single purchase might serve more than one of your children.

Each of the covered majors is grouped together with similar majors in a section. Under each major, subsections address 'What it's about', 'Is this for you?', 'Recommended high school prep', 'Typical courses in this major', 'Concentrations', 'What the study of this major is like', 'Other majors you might like', 'Questions to ask colleges', Career options and trends', and 'For more information'. Not surprisingly, 1,314 pages fill up quickly.

The second section of the book then lists the colleges and universities in each state that offer each of the majors mentioned in the first.

You can find this information elsewhere. The appeal of this book lies in the fact that it collects it for you in one handy volume and gets it to you on the cheap.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
This book was a bit dissapointing, really. You think a book of this size and price would at least include more and better information, and many of my desired majors it had absolutely no information on. Totally was not worth it. ... Read more

66. Vocational interests 18 years after college (Minnesota library on student personnel work)

Product Description

Vocational Interests 18 Years After College was first published in 1955. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.

A pioneer in scientific vocational counseling, Edward K. Strong, Jr., devised the Strong Vocational Interest Blank some years ago as a tool to help the counselor find out what kind of work a young person is best suited for. In this volume Mr. Strong reports on a study which he undertook to determine the validity of the interest blank in predicting the future vocations of individuals.

For this study, the interest scores of several hundred former college students were compared with the occupations in which these men were engaged 18 years later. The results provide answers to basic questions regarding the use of interest scores in vocational counseling. The findings also serve to confirm or modify the conclusions published earlier by Mr. Strong in his book Vocational Interests in Men and Women (a volume for which he was awarded the Butler Silver Medal by Columbia University).

The original group whim the present study is based consisted of 884 Stanford University graduates whose interests had been revealed by the use of the Vocational Interest Blank while they were in college. Follow-up data on their actual careers are presented and analyzed for approximately three fourths of this number, the remainder being eliminated because they were engaged in occupations for which no specific scales were available.

In addition to revising and amplifying Mr. Strong's earlier work on the subject, this volume outlines a number of developments which provoke new problems and point the way for future research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best College Handbook Ever
This is by far the best overall guide for all college students, but especially graduating high school seniors. I recommend that it be introduced to a student well before applying to college. It is wonderful gift to a student and should be 'required reading' for all parents before sending their children off to college. The format is ideal and the topics discussed are most contemporary for what kids now face their very first semester. This true survival guide will be well appreciated throughout one's college experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars High School Counselor - Bruce Z.
As a high school guidance counselor since 1995 I have searched for and reviewed most publications that attempt to assist prospective students excel during their college years. This book is one of the most unique I have found. Since it was written by a current student, the approach, perspective and even the vocabulary is in line with today's youth.
I had several students review it for me as well. Their feedback was very positive, especially the "real world" approach to some difficult subjects like dating, drinking, diet and exercise. The advice on leveraging professor's office time and tips to improve study habits were also well received. Our school, a private academy, is giving a copy to each senior as part of their "Get Sarted Packet" upon graduation. Highly recommended to any student graduating this year or in the recent past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hits on all Points
As a recent university graduate (2 years in the 'real world'), I can say that I wish this book had been available when I was entering collegiate life.It really helps incomming freshman, and even upper-classmen, avoid many of the seemingly invisible pitfalls of campus life.I gave this book to my cousin who is entering college this fall, and told him to take notes. He wrote me a thankyou note a few weeks later, and said that he thought it was a cheezy gift, but that he read a couple pages, and finished it in a week!Cheezy indeed.anyway, by this for yourself, or someone you know entering college, and you will not be displeased.five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Awesome" was my student's response
I got a copy of 'Ahead of the Pack' for my son headed to college as a graduation present. He's not a big reader in general, however he did not put it down until it was finished. I asked him about the contents and what he thought. His response was "awesome". The book seems to reach young people where they are in preparation for college and answer many questions for them from a peer, not a old man like me!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Roadmap for College
Finally, an author young enough to relate to young adults, yet mature enough to lead them with integrity.Mr. Richardson's moral values shine through as he tackles everything from budgeting to sexual concerns. This book can be read in it's entirety, or in segments, as it's easily divided by topics. This book is an excellent read from the time a High Schooler in in 10th grade, through (at least) their first year in college. What a great gift as High School graduation invitations are rolling in! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very unique college guide for liberals and conservatives
This is a book for junior activists! It lists many, many undergraduate and graduate schools that are strong in social activism. This book is a first-of-its-kind. There is no other college guide like this one, except maybe "Lisa Birnbach's New and Improved College Book" by Lisa Birnbach. Besides these two, there are no other guide books out on the market that tell the prospective college students and their parents about the political leaning and activism atmosphere of the colleges and universities.

Selecting a college is very much like finding a marriage partner. It takes a lot of effort to find a right match. Too often, students and parents are attracted to the selectivity and rankings put out by US News & World Report, thinking that these numbers mean academic excellence. No, they are not. Selectivity means how good the students are at a particular school. It doesn't mean that the school teaches well. It just means that the students are good. There is no ranking of how well the professors teach. US News & World Report never has such a ranking. Nor is there a ranking of how well the graduates of a particular college or university perform on job after they leave the school. Such a ranking would be the most useful, for it reveals the real and genuine transformation work that a school has done for the students. But no, US News & World Report does not have such a ranking.

This book offers a very unique view into the colleges not seen in other guide books -- which ones are socially and politically active and are doing their best to cultivate activists for social change?

This book is useful to both liberals and conservatives alike. Conservative students and parents can use this guide to avoid the schools listed here. Liberal students and parents can use it to look into and apply to these schools.

Not all schools listed in this guide are of the same degrees or in the same areas of activism. Indeed, some schools are very active and some are very mild in their activism. Also, different schools are active in different areas.

There are two reasons why I give it 4 stars. One is that I think the grammar and the writing style can be better. Another is that I suspect that some schools are not listed. For example, the famous UC Berkeley is not, nor is Macalester College.

5-0 out of 5 stars distinctive colleges, distinctive education, unusual, great
I wrote this guide for those of you out there who want to use your education to make a better world. The book features lots of unusual colleges and hard to find graduate programs - filled with hands-onexperiential education, community-based learning, meaningful, relevant,career-oriented majors and more. You'll never learn about most of thesecolleges from your counselor or other guides. Do you want to go to analternative college? THey're all here. A green college? A college concernedwith peace or social justice?Little colleges on islands or innovativestate colleges? These places offer exciting educational opportunities, asupportive atmosphere for someone who wants to make a difference. Most ofthem are friendly places for minority and gay students. Lots of outdoorbased recreation too. Parents, these are just great colleges. Many of themare small, and so very good places to send your B or C students. These arecharacter building places, with value-based education. There are Buddhist,Catholic, Presbyterian and other religiously affiliated colleges.Lookingfor a graduate program? This book includes programs from environmental lawto community based medicine, non-profit management to sustainabledevelopment. It also lists the Peace Corps Masters InternationalistPrograms.
