5-0 out of 5 stars Better Even Than Hillary Voodoo
I didn't think I'd find a political book that made me laugh more than the Hillary Clinton Voodoo Book. But after seeing that the same author wrote this I checked it out and I'll be danged, it was even funnier.

W. is an easier humor target to be sure. But the book doesn't come at him from the usual angles. Lots of surprising and very funny stuff.

My only complaint is the pins to stick the W. Voodoo doll with were too small. Seeing the stupid look on the doll's face and reading about all of W.'s failures put into their full and proper and tragicomic context, I wanted to stick something at least the size of a knitting needle into it. ... Product Description
David Henderson's biography of Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child of the Aquarian Age -- first published in hardcover in 1978 -- was described by Greil Marcus of Rolling Stone as "[t]he strongest and most ambitious biography yet written about any rock and roll performer." The paperback edition was retitled 'Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky: The Life of Jimi Hendrix, and in this smaller format, extensive interviews from the original edition were omitted. Nonetheless, all previous editions sold more than 300,000 copies and created a new standard for writing about popular artists, especially musicians.

Henderson's biography helped to rescue Hendrix from an unfair, erroneous association with drug decadence and recognized him as a true musical genius. The Hendrix legacy still thrives, and Henderson has more to reveal and further insight to offer about the man who remains regarded as the greatest rock and roll guitarist of all time. 'Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky: Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child is the newly revised, updated, and expanded edition of the definitive, most beloved biography of the man behind the legend. It melds the original text, which featured Hendrix's voice in complete interviews, with new material -- to the extent that Hendrix could easily be described as the coauthor of this work.

Henderson now offers information that was initially difficult to obtain in the years immediately following Hendrix's death. With the passage of time, originally reluctant informants have come forward, and many of the coverups and legal battles have been resolved. All of this has shed new light on Hendrix's life, as well as on the circumstances surrounding his mysterious death. This edition includes more of Hendrix's personal writings, and goes more in depth about his romantic life and the music -- its creation, problems, and triumphs -- as scholarship and recognition of his importance have deepened over time. While revealing essential information about his untimely death, i reads like a grand adventure novel but so includes salient cultural, political, and historical background. David Henderson wrote this biography as the result of a promise he'd made to Jimi at Ungano's nightclub in Manhattan in 1969 to write something solely about him. The rock legend had read and liked Henderson's piece in Crawdaddy -- one of Hendrix's favorite magazines -- on his concert with Sly Stone at the Fillmore East. Little did either man know that they would forever be connected by this timeless and important biography. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Author takes more than poetic license
This is what we call a biographical novel. A mixture of fiction and fact about Jimi with the author's own personal agenda, sort of like Oliver Stone's take on Jim Morrison. Historical errors abound. He attributes far more radical political views to Hendrix than any other author I've read (eight books so far, most of them at least twice), or any documentary etc. He is so presumptuous he knows what Hendrix was thinking! Another reviewer says Henderson is an artist himself and we don't understand his poetic style etc. I understand perfectly. The man wrote a very readable novel based on the life of Jimi Hendrix and tries to pass it off as a biography.

I discovered this book close to 30 years ago. It was the first book on Hendrix I ever read. Thank God it wasn't the last! This is a warped representation of Jimi's art and life and I can only recommend this to absolute Hendrix fanatics who've already read everything else in print.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Good at all
The author just takes so many liberties that the book loses its credibility. The author just make so much effort in painting a "Jimi Hendrix" the author would like to believe in that the book turns into a fantasy story loosely based on Hendrix's life. I think the book exaggerated the political views of Hendrix and drastically reduce his drug use. Add to that incorrect details about his guitar playing and equipment use, something that has been so much documented everywhere else, and the book loses its charm almost immediately. Finally, the authors views of a conspiracy theory about Hendrix's death set the tone for what turns out to be a very disappointing book. It should not be sold as a biography; it is misleading in its cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Educational Read
Biographies are not history and should not be judged on being 100% factually accurate. It goes with the territory. I think David Henderson did a great job with this book in creating a profile of a complex and interesting character living in a dynamic time. What I really liked was the immersive nature of the times, environment, and settings that Jimi Hendrix lived in, as painted by the author. Henderson being a poet, knows how to use language and vivid descriptions to get readers into the period. When reading this book, I kept flashing back to my late high school period when Hendrix was at his pinnacle. A good friend had worn out three copies of Electric Ladyland from playing them so frequently. I never tired of going over to his house and having him say "Sit down here...get comfortable...you gotta listen to this song...I mean REALLY listen to it." His enthusiasm was so pure and infectious that I never dared to suggest we listen to any of the other albums I had brought over. Even though I haven't seen this friend in 38 years, I hunted him down so that I could anonymously send him a copy of the Henderson book. He needs it and hopefully will enjoy it as much as I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetic Biography
Most reviews of this book do not understand what David Henderson is up to.Henderson is an artist in his own right and his biography of Hendrix is a great read. Henderson is an artist forged in the same cultural milieu as Hendrix. Henderson was an important figure in the Black Arts Movement and he is working in the New Journalism tradition (Hunter Thompson, Thomas Wolf etc.) so don't expect generic writing and a presentation of "facts."This is a poetic biography and it brings Hendrix to life. If you are put off by "slang" and are appalled by any deviation from the New York Times Style Sheet you should probably skip this book, but if you want to spend some time digging Jimi, his triumphs and tragedy you should get this book. If you were not at Monterey Pop, or Woodstock, or the Berkley Community Theater in 1970 when Hendrix dedicated the show to the Black Panther Party, you should get this book-- it is the next best thing to being there.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource with shortcomings
After spending much time in Haiti doing what could be called an informal anthropological study of vodou ritual I became throughly obsessed with the veves I would watch voodou practitioners draw with powdered chalk. I looked high and low for some sort of an encyclopedic work which documented the veves in their great beauty and variety - VE-VE is just such a book. It is large and elegantly formatted and also quite comprehensive. As a picture book I give it 5 out of 5 stars. Unfortunately the text is full of buzzwords and is written with a vaguely arrogant tone. The chapter on chemistry is laughable to anyone who has taken even a high school class in chemistry, the word "hydroxyl" is misspelled and mistaken for water when in fact a hydroxyl group is what characterizes an alcohol. Pseudo-science and buzzwords aside the text contains some interesting material and is worth, at the very least, skimming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a book of Ve-Ve?
I being a bit of a symboligist and I'm always looking for books on the subject. And if you have the same interest and are looking for a book on Voudou with almost every Ve-Ve you'll ever want. This is the book for you.Rigaud explains all the different parts of a Ve-Ve and their meaning. This book is also trilingual.Meaning it's in English, French and Spanish. And is not a book for amateurs who's only exposure to Voudou is what they've seen in movies.Definitely a mystic esoteric look at the subject

5-0 out of 5 stars A quite interesting book
This book, I was waiting so long to get it. It contains nearly 300 different veves. Even some not well known ones. In the brief introduction section its try to explain the parts of the veves (symbols what a veve contain). Everybody should have a copy, who wants to dig himself deep into the world of the Lwa.

Product Description

As a new resident of Togo in 1985, Judy Rosenthal witnessed herfirst Gorovodu trance ritual. Over the next eleven years, she studied this voodoo inWest Africa's Ewe populations of coastal Ghana, Togo, and Benin, an area once calledthe Slave Coast. The result is Possession, Ecstasy, and Law in Ewe Voodoo, anethnography of spirit possession that focuses on law and morality in "medecine Vodu"orders. Gorovodu is not a doctrinal set, but rather a lingusitic, moral, andspiritual community, with both real and imaginedaspects.

In medecine Vodu possession, the deitiesevoked are spirits of "bought people" from the savanna regions, slaves who workedfor southern coastal lineages, often marrying into Ewe families. Drumming anddancing rituals, replete with voluptuous trances and gender reversals, bring these"foreign" spirits back into Ewe communities to protect worshippers, heal the sickand troubled, arbitrate disputes, and enjoy themselves as they did before they died.(Rosenthal employs Bakhtin's theory of carnival to interpret the openly festiveelement of Gorovodu.) The changeable nature of the religion echoes the lack ofboundaries of the Gorovodu family and the residents' belief that communal andindividual identity are fluid rather than fixed. Numerous name changes early in thiscentury indicated a strategy for resisting colonialcontrol.

Writing from a background ofanthropology, Rosenthal carefully monitors her own role as narrator in the book, aware of the cultural distance between her and the Africans she is writing about. She intends this ethnography to mirror the "texts" of voodoo itself, a body ofsignifiers and meanings with which the reader must interact in order to make senseof it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of slave spirit possession in Togolese voodoo
Judy Rosenthal explains the Ewes' (pronounced Ev'he) cultural mobility as simultaneously a spiritual expression of African individuality and personhood. She argues that we must begin "with the knowledge that Eweculture travels and is traveling... Ewe personhood is a travelnarrative."The Ewe people lifestyle, material production andfamilial reproduction are all contingent on regular mobility but irregularmovement; from town to town, village to village, and from colonial anathema(a.k.a. Ghana & Togo) to post-colonial anathema. Spiritual productionis no exception to this; not only do Ewes move around Ewe-land fromgorovodu ceremony to Afa divination ritual, but the spirits they celebrateare those of the mobile: of northern slaves and of rural migrants. Moreover, her compelling analysis of Ewe slave-spirit possession guides thereader to the very un-Western possibility that, upon this culturalcontinuity in the form of celebrating slave ancestors, is dependent Ewe"individuation and individuality". Drawing on de Surgy , sheclaims Ewe individuation is more personal and unique than Westernindividualism, "yet never whole or completely separated from otherpersons, spirits and times"- pulling constantly on the spirits andcommunity memories of those whose lives were framed by mobility andmigration. This book has significantly influenced my own research andmethodology and is Highly Recommended to academics and novices/fetichists.Benjamin Nicholas LAWRANCE Stanford University ... Product Description
Using examples drawn from daily life and history, the author explains what probability is and how it works.

Our lives are governed by chance. But what, exactly, is chance? In this book, accomplished statistician and storyteller Bart K. Holland takes us on a tour of the world of probability.Weaving together tales from real life—from the spread of the bubonic plague in medieval Europe or the number of Prussian cavalrymen kicked to death by their horses, through IQ test results and deaths by voodoo curse, to why you have to wait in line for rides at Disneyworld—Holland captures the reader's imagination with surprising examples of probability in action, everyday events that can profoundly affect our lives but are controlled by just one number.

As Holland explains, even chance events are governed by the laws of probability and follow regular patterns called statistical laws. He shows how such laws are successfully applied, with great benefit, in fields as diverse as the insurance industry, the legal system, medical research, aerospace engineering, and climatology. Whether you have only a distant recollection of high school algebra or use differential equations every day, this book offers examples of the impact of chance that will amuse and astonish. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Elementary introduction
The only useful item I found in this book was an explanation of how to calculate the average life span from a life table. The book explains the normal distribution and topics at that level. It also gives a rather superficial explanation of Black-Scholes option pricing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Figure the Odds
It has been shown that although any branch of mathematics can be difficult, people have a particular inherent difficulty with probability. It's easy tosee an example of this: Las Vegas was built upon the fantasy that one mightwalk away from the tables richer than one started.Of course, it canhappen, but even the fools about to be parted from their money know that theodds are against them.It makes little difference. We think we have anintrinsic understanding of probability, but we do not.A little book by statistician Bart K. Holland, _What Are the Chances?: Voodoo Deaths, Office Gossip, and Other Adventures in Probability_ (Johns Hopkins University Press) could improve understanding of some simple and some difficult matters in the laws of chance.

For instance, mathematicians evaluated the "Hot Hand" effect in basketball.Players and spectators knew that there were times when a shooter was having a good string of hits, an obvious run that demonstrated a flow of particular skill. But there weren't such runs; we are pattern-seeking creatures, and we can see patterns even in randomness, that is, when no pattern is there. What's more, we are very likely to think the pattern can be used as some sort of prediction. This is the basis of the classic "gambler's fallacy," that in a random indicator, what has gone before affects what will happen next.It "feels" right that if you toss a fair coin repeatedly and get ten heads in a row, that it is more likely that the next toss will be tails, but of course the coin has no memory of what has gone before.Probability plays a role in actuarial tables, and there is a brief, fascinating history of life insurance; it used to be sacrilegious to offer life insurance (but not, say, shipping delivery insurance) because only God was supposed to roll those dice.Holland also explains queuing theory basics, and answers the ultimate question:Why is my line for the supermarket check-out going so much slower than the others?

The Voodoo deaths in the subtitle come from epidemiologic studies (Holland is a professor of biostatistics and epidemiology) which show that that patients who believe themselves marked by death for a voodoo curse are actually at greater risk for dying (or at least getting sick). It can be shown, however, that nothing supernatural is happening. The hex only works if the victim and his family know about it and believe the voodoo priest has the power to do such a thing; in other words, it has a reverse placebo effect. The office gossip in the subtitle is a model of exponential spread, analogous to the spread of the plague, or to a nuclear chain reaction.Holland has picked amusing examples, both esoteric and from everyday life, to illustrate the way probability profoundly affects all of us.Chances are that any reader will be entertained and educated.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good collection of statistics applications
I teach introductory business statistics, in addition to a variety of economics and finance courses at a regional campus of a state university.I was looking for some interesting, relevant applications/anecdotes to supplement a clearly written but rather terse textbook.I also wanted some new material to spice up my lectures. This book delivers. In principle, it can be read by someone who has never had a course in statistics, because it develops the subject from first principles, or should I say, first examples. In the course of the narrative, typical introductory textbook topics such as the nature of randomness, the binomial and normal probability distributions, and confidence intervals are covered. The exposition is self-contained, in that it includes mathematical expressions of the probability distributions.Unlike a textbook, however, it becomes clear that the examples drive the exposition of the statistics, not vice-versa.Some interesting examples require the development of distributions which are not generally taught in introductory courses, such the Poisson and even more advanced stochastic processes to model waiting times. No one but a mathematician will be able to completely absorb this advanced material, especially since it seems to be included more for completeness than with an expectation of comprehension by the reader. Also, as a financial economist, I was a bit disappointed by the treatment of random walks to model stock price behavior. While not generally incorrect, the exposition is not as lucid as if it had been written by, say, an econometrician. On the other hand, the main benefit I got from reading this book was a plethora of examples outside finance and economics--specifically, in epidemiology, which is the author's specialty.Although I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a self-study textbook in the subject, I would highly recommend it for a student who is taking or has taken an introductory statistics class, as well as someone who is contemplating taking the subject and wants more motivation than a textbook will provide.Holland is a very erudite writer. After reading this book, nobody can legitimately claim that statistics is boring or irrelevant. ... Read more

Product Description
Running the Voodoo Down reassesses Miles Davis’s "electric period" and analyzes its continuing influence on contemporary music. While jazz purists often revile this phase — which encompasses the entire second half of his career, from 1967 until his death in 1991 — the book takes a new, appreciatory look at this music and shows its importance to Davis’s career and to jazz as a whole. The author also reveals surprising connections between Davis, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. This book will stir up the longtime debate about this important music and give Davis’s legions of fans refreshing insights into his work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful argument for Miles' astounding influence on Modern Music
"Running the Voodoo Down: The Electric Music of Miles Davis" is both concise and well-written. It is largely written in chronological order. The book reads easily because it is broken up thematically chapter-by-chapter, and each chapter reads more like a well-written magazine piece than like a book chapter.

Still, Philip Freeman does an excellent job tying it all together. And he has no more reason to do so other than his love for this period of Miles Davis' music. This is sufficient and jazz and popular musical writers are who are going to form the future's history and place Miles in the upper echelon of all-time musical greats--right where he belongs.

All-in-all an extremely well-written account, I was never bored with it. And the thematic material was wide-ranging enough that it never seems redundant or overly opinionated. Freeman supports his opinions with experience, citing various other artists before and since who he feels have informed his listening tastes.

If you have become bitten by the Miles Electric period "Bug" as have I and many other listeners, "Running the Voodoo Down" is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars a really good book
I don't review a lot of items, but this book -- which I've now read a couple of times -- impresses me as one of the few books about music that I've ever enjoyed.(It certainly helps that I've liked Miles's 70's music for some time.)The book doesn't seem to proceed in any noticeable progression (e.g., not chronological), but it is very well written, very readable, and chock full of knowledge about a subject the author knows very well, and about an artist whom he reveres but nonetheless is willing to critique when appropriate. If you like Miles Davis or like 70's era jam music (Santana, Allman Bros.) you should read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Subject but Not the Definitive Book
"Running the Voodoo Down" is an interesting exploration into Miles' electric period, its formative years in the late 60's, full blossoming in the 70's and its ultimate wash out in his return from retirement in the 80's. However, it is not as effective as "Miles Beyond" by Paul Tingen which was obviously researched with great detail. For example, "Running the Voodoo Down" states that there were no studio sessions from 1973 while "Miles Beyond" mentions them (even though they have never been released to the general public officially or otherwise) and discusses briefly from an interview with a Miles alumnist what they might have sounded like as well as the interview with Chick Corea that discusses the very first electric concert in 1968. These are minor details but details such as this are what makes a work of musical history. By now, everyone is giving long overdue praise to Miles' electric period but its the detailed facts and unknown stories and descriptions of what was going on beyond the scenes that wets people's appetite for the next Miles archival reissue and lets bands give due for their influences. Also "Miles Beyond" was written like a work of archaeology whereas "Running the Voodoo Down" is filled with overly hyperbolistic rock critic cliches. For the casual listener or the phillistine who puts aside anything from "In a Silent Way" and beyond as derivative of rock and not really jazz, it is essential. For the true jazz fanatic, it is mostly a familiar story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily Rich Period For Miles
Excellent companion to Miles Beyond by Paul Tingen - get 'em both!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Brew
The music Miles Davis made in the period this book grapples with was unpredictable, contentious, sometimes maddening, often exciting, and on occasion, the most thrilling thing on Earth. The book itself is a fit match for its subject. Faced with a body of work that's inspired more than one sensible critic to throw up his hands, Freeman just rolls up his sleeves and digs in, addressing the material with just the right balance of scepticism and enthusiasm. Those new to Miles Davis will get their eyes and ears opened wide; old-timers will be reminded what it's like to encounter some much-needed fresh thinking on an old favorite . ... Read more

Product Description
This analysis examines the interplay between the Voodoo church and the complexity of Haitian politics from the colonial period to the post Papa Doc and Baby Doc Duvalier era. The author attempts to reveal the strategic role played by Voodoo ideology and cult leaders during the Haitian Revolution. The study further documents the transformation of maroon (fugitive slaves) organizations into secret societies after the independence of the colony from France. During the 20th century Voodoo is found to be central to Haitian politics, especially during both Duvalier adminstrations, since some notorious Tontons Macoutes were also Voodoo priests. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's Hard To Believe
It's hard to believe that Robert Rankin's books are so difficult to obtain on these shores: for my money, Rankin is, hands down, one of the funniest, most visionary authors writing in any genre. His style is loose and playfuland, on the onset, seemingly completely at odds with the purpose ofconstructing a coherent narrative. Laugh-out-loud moments abound however, drawing the slack-jwed reader deep into a web of outrageous characters andeven more outrageous situations. An absolutely stunning achievement! I wishI could have amnesia so I could read this book again for the first time!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Book, with a roller-coaster twist in its tail
I fell in love with this book.Mr Rankins inventive and at times, ingenious writing had me enthralled. I just loved the cruelty and revenge factors of this book... and its anti- world supremacy outlook.Just wait for the celebrity summoning chapters, in Roberts own bar on the necronet. Fabulous

5-0 out of 5 stars If your favourite drink is Death by Cider you'll love this
This is one of Rankin's best books and is best read after after most of his earlier works (as there are several references).

As usual, Rankin provides a straight forward mix of thought provoking hi-tech concepts, oldfashioned suspense, yuk and hilarity.

Easy to read with a title that'sbrilliant to show off on the train (only kidding) this book is a greatexample of why Rankin far outstrips Pratchett for action and humour.

Thebook leaves you wanting more of the same and I think that's a compliment!

5-0 out of 5 stars More genius
This book is simply genius. (full stop - end of argument)

4-0 out of 5 stars Do do that Voodoo that you do so well...
Rankin once again has a weirdly catchy title to fit an even weirder book.

For a taste of what technology can do in the wrong hands that is frighteningly feasible...

And a further helping of sprouts (one calledBarry in particular)...

He's a clever chap, Rankin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important addition to the literature
This is a well-researched book and an important addition to the literature. The reader will learn much about not only the title subject, but the world in which she lived. The author's careful scholarship is a welcome correction to the haze that tends to surround the subject of voodoo in New Orleans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marie Laveaux Personalized
Dr. Fandrich did a great job in presenting a New Orleans legend in a manner that was both knowledgable and personal.I got to know Ms. Laveaux on a personal level and to understand her strength, character and power.Dr. Fandrich did a marvelous job in making the connection between the role of Africa in the worship of deities and the African diasporic religion of Voodoo as it was practiced in Haiti and then in New Orleans by Ms. Laveaux.I greatly enjoyed this book and it has inspired me in ways that words just cannot express.I would like to thank the ancestors for inspiring Dr. Fandrich to put the story of Marie Laveaux into context for others to utilize and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Smart Book on Marie Laveaux
This is by far the best book I have read on the subject of Marie Laveaux.Dr. Fandrich not only captures the historical context of New Orleans before and during Marie Laveux's lifetime she also captures and explains the spiritual basis for New Orleans Voodoo.I find the book to be refreshing and informative. This book is full of historical information but at the same time isvery interesting and is a fast read. This book is bound to be seen as the most important book on the subject of Marie Laveaux. Finally a book that provided me with information about questions I have been searching for in regards to this mysterious woman.Thank you Dr. Fandrich!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Source for Info on Marie Laveaux!
Dr. Fandrich has produced the first truly valuable study of Marie Laveaux for students and scholars of religion. She skillfully analyzes the historical fiction and popular legends surrounding New Orleans Voodoo and its most (in)famous Queen while explaining the roots of these myths through an explanation of Voodoo's development and history.Fandrich's personal research in the archives of New Orleans certainly paid of for her.Her hard work uncovered Laveaux's birth certificate (long thought lost) and thus gives a new and definite historicity to her subject.Instead of reading like a popular New Orleans tour book, this serious analysis of Marie Laveaux's life and the society that gave rise to her legend has a solid methodology. Both interesting and carefully researched down to the smallest detail, this book is a must have for any serious student of New Orleans, Voodoo, and African-American/Afro-Caribbean religions. ...
