5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated with full-color photography throughout
Beautifully illustrated with full-color photography throughout, The Everglades introduces young readers to the treasures of the Everglades ecosystem, from its alligators to its rare flowers, reptilian and amphibian inhabitants shaded green or brown, bears, raccoons, panthers, and much more. Fun facts abound in this picturebook: "Raccoons have a better sense of touch in their front paws than any other meat-eating animal. They use their sensitive paws to search for crabs, crayfish, clams, frogs, and snails in shallow water. When early settlers saw the animals splashing on the edge of marshes they wrongly thought they were washing their food." Highly recommended for children's collections in both school and public libraries. ... Read more

The boards are covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the book, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. This book is individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Knot recommended...
This book fails on two different levels. The first level is the selection of knots. The book claims that its selection of 24 knots represents the most important "basic, work-a-day, normal-life, 9-to-5 utility" knots a person should know.Oh really? Then how does it justify inclusion of the Prusik Knot which the book describes as: "This is a climber's knot, and you'll probably never need it.But on the other hand, if you're ever faced with a vertical rope that you have to climb, the prusik could be a potential lifesaver."Hardly seems like a normal, everyday, 9-to-5 knot to me.And frankly, if I'm going to be climbing ropes, I should probably be reading a dedicated climbing book to learn about all the other knots I'll need while I'm on that rope. The same could be said about the selection of the last knot, "The Magic Knot".Clearly aimed at amusing children at birthday parties it is hard to see why it merits ranking in the top 24 of thousands of useful knots to know. There are many other loops, bends, and stopper knots that could (should) have been included instead.

The second level this book fails at is that it incorrectly illustrates how to tie two of the most useful knots in the book. The fisherman's knot (really a bend) is one of the best ways to join two ropes together and it is impossible to come up with the correctly illustrated final depiction by following the steps as shown (both ends must cross either over or under each other, not one over and the other under as shown in step two). Also the Taut Line Hitch (also called the Rolling Hitch) that is illustrated is a much less secure version than the one other sources recommend. The one in the book shows the second turn below the first, the more secure recommended version is to place the second turn *above* the first turn.Sounds like no big deal, huh?Try tying them both ways and seeing how easy it is for the Klutz's hitch to slip.

I strongly recommend doing an internet search for 'animated knots'.There are some fantastic websites that show careful, step by step animations or videos that allow you to go at your own pace with very clear pictures of actual ropes, not drawings. You can even buy a CD of them or download them as an iPhone app.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a good book for learning basic knots. It will not teach you hundreds of knots but only the basic ones you need for 99% of the times. This is why I bought it so my son could learn the essential knots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most wonderful book on knots that there is
This book is great.I've purchased a few books on knots and haven't really been that successful in learning much from them.

This one is different. In addition to this book coming with ropes, the pages are all cardboard and are cut in the shapes of what you would use the knot on.So, you don't have to go find a long metal bar to tie a clove hitch, you can just tie the hitch onto the cardboard page.

One of my ropes that came with the book kind of disintegrated, but I bought this book used, and the book was about ten years old, so I was more impressed by the other rope that did hold up, than I was saddened by the one that disintegrated. But if you use this book too much, you might want to buy some more rope like 5mmx50' Rope.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best knots and the easiest book ever
There are books with more knot but no better knots. If you only need to know the best and most useful knots, hitches and bends, this is the book to own. Clear to see what the knot is doing, big color graphics of how to tie them, and even comes with 2 different color strings to practice with.

I needed to know knots for work and this book gave me the ones I needed and a few other cool ones I use to this day. Like the shoe lace knot that doesn't come undone or the constrictor knot.

Great Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be a hero!
This is one book that can actually help transform the most clumsy, physically useless, alienated neurotic into a helpful person to have around.
If you have never gone to sea, but can learn to tie a square knot and a taut-line hitch, you're suddenly a useful guest on a day sail. Learn the amazing truckers' hitch and you will be the hero of a dozen parking lots and a few amateur moves. Throw in a working knowledge of a bowline and a clove hitch and you're now somebody who can pull her weight.

This little book is packaged with some cord woven through the covers. The cord is guaranteed to get lost-no matter. Keep this book around and people will want to have you around. If you find that you've become addicted, you may want to move up to Ashley Book of Knots or the wonderfully arcane The Arts of the Sailor: Knotting, Splicing and Ropework

Lynn Hoffman, author of the heroic bang BANG: A Novel ... Read more
