This volume contains most of the papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Water Pollution held in Bucharest and organized by the University Politehnica of Bucharest and the Wessex Institute of Technology of the UK with the collaboration of the WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment. The Conference, which started in 1991, provides a forum for inter-disciplinary discussion and dissemination of papers related to water quality and environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads or by bad management of water resources. These are issues of growing importance due to the worldwide increased demand for water by communities, industries, and agriculture. The future development of many countries will depend decisively upon how the increasing demand for water will be satisfied, and how the economic and environmental cost for that demand may be met.

Environmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary. Engineers and scientists working in this field must be familiar with a wide range of issues including the physical processes of mixing and dilution, chemical and biological processes, mathematical modelling, data acquisition and measurement, to name but a few. Good information but an alarmist tone
The Clean Water Act is a landmark of environmental regulation in the United States.Though it is hardly perfect legislation, because of the CWA the Great Lakes, the Potomac River, and many other famous waters are no longer cesspools.

The authors of this book know this but prefer to give us a "Chicken Little" story in which disaster is always coming around the corner.No law, apparently, is good enough to meet the dangers of water pollution that we face.

For example, they present evidence that water pollution from industrial (point) sources has declined while the major increases in pollution come from nonpoint agricultural sources.This seems to me a straightforward argument for being satisfied with the provisions of the CWA while bemoaning the fact that it did not address agricultural sources.Instead, the authors would rather be disappointed in all of the results.

There's a lot of good information in this book, as my example suggests, but the author's attitude toward the successes of the CWA make the tone of the book frustrating.The raw materials of a balanced assessment can be found in this book but the editorialization insists that the sky is falling.

CWA literature is overwhelming, dense, and confusing.This book is a refreshing change - the progress under the Clean Water Act is presented ina very simple manner.Good for basic technical and legal understanding ofthe subject.EPA and state-level programs and reports are brilliantlycritiqued (no wonder, the book is produced by NRDC!).The text issupported by excellent research of legislative history of the CWA.

This book presents multi-disciplinary analyses of the environmental effects and implications in Bangladesh and India of the Ganges water diversion. The analyses demonstrate that the downstream part of the Ganges River basin in Bangladesh, which has a sensitive ecosystem, has become very vulnerable to water diversion and as a result it has caused significant damage to many economic sectors and ecosystems. Areas upstream of the Farakka Barrage in India have become more vulnerable to floods and riverbank erosion. The Kolkata Port has marginally benefited from the water diversion. In the Hooghly River estuary, populations of flora and fauna have thrived. In the downstream areas of Bangladesh costly adaptation measures have been adopted and in many cases damages are irreparable. A regional cooperative framework is presented to foster water resources and environmental development in the Ganges River basin.

An Epic Story of the Effects of Water Diversion
I have been quite familiar with the Ganges Water Sharing Problem between India and Bangladesh which has been continuing for the last 55 years. The problem first arose when India commissioned the Farakka Barrage on April 1975 and continued unilateral water diversion from the Ganges River. Interventions on a natural system always creates some adverse environmental effects. However, the case of the Ganges is unique that a large area of sensitive ecosystem of Bangladesh is highly dependent on the freshwater supplies from the Ganges River.

I have read many piecemeal works on this issue in the last three decades. Atleast 4 books were published on this topic but their focus was limited to techno-political dimension of the problem. This anthology is the ever first attempt to quantify hydrological, morphological and ecological blunder caused by the Ganges water diversion. The book is very balanced in a sense that it covered effects of water diversion on both sides of the border. I congratuale the editor of this anthology which is a very well known water expert on South Asia for this candid effort. The chapters are well written, informative, precise and well edited.
