Product Description
Hurricane Katrina. The Indian Ocean Tsunami. Killer Tornadoes. Planet Earth's extremes of weather are making news as never before, and now LIFE explains why, in a book that collects some of the greatest photographs of natural disasters ever assembled. From earthquakes to tornadoes, lightning to tsunamis, LIFE Nature's Fury illuminates the hidden natural forces that shape our lives in splendid and terrible ways.

LIFE travels back to before Noah's flood and looks at the frenzied activity that led to the death of the dinosaurs. The volcano that might have sunk the legendary Atlantis is discussed, as is the one that led to the poignant mummies of Pompeii. In our times, LIFE presents 25 natural disasters of the last century and a-half in vivid photography. Interspersed are special sections that answer the questions: What is a hurricane? What is a Tsunami? What is an earthquake? This helps the reader understand the phenomenal forces behind the almost unbelievable imagery.

Photography captures many things well, but it captures nature--especially nature at its most furious--best. This is an exciting, dynamic volume. ... Read more

Product Description
With FREIGHT WEATHER: THE ART OF STALKING TRAINS,photojournalist D. C. Jesse Burkhardt crosses into a new dimension ina continuing exploration of the "heart and soul" of North America'srailroads. "Freight Weather," Burkhardt's third book, concludes anunanticipated trilogy that began with "Backwoods Railroads" in 1994,accelerated into fresh terrain with "Rolling Dreams" in 1997, andculminates with this volume. Over a seven-year span, Burkhardt's focushas shifted from primarily detailing the history and businessoperations of selected rail lines. Here, he offers a more literary andsoulful vision of the essence of his attachment to the tracks andtrains that reach across the land, completing the chain with writingand photography that celebrates trains as the ultimate form ofoverland travel. In five chapters, Burkhardt offers a photographictour that begins in the Columbia River Gorge and stretches to theUpper Midwest, the West Coast, and Western Canada. He ends the book -- and finishes a series of narratives and essays about railroad wanderings -- in tiny Lind, Washington. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos, great writing, great trains
Freight Weather is the complete railroad book. You can enjoy it simply for the beautiful photos, or for the great writing, or for the details about trains. This is one of the few books that combines all three -- words, photos and info. I have looked at a lot of railroad books and I highly recommend this one. Well worth owning.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding work
I now have all three of this author's books and this one is by far the finest of the trio. The photography is breathtaking and the anecdotes are quite interesting. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who likes trains or even anyone who just appreciates some of the fine scenery this country has to offer. ... Read more

If you look at clouds as a dynamic natural phenomenon or at the cloud shapes (we anthropomorphic beings)and label them, you will love this pictorial book. The author is also creator of CLOUDSPOTTERS, an organization out of London.I joined.I am also writing a book for kids from 10 to 80 called "Dragoncloud."

I thought the idea of this book was interesting, after seeing it on Martha Stewart.I purchased 2.Was quite dissapointed with the size.It was so tiny......This would make a great coffee table hard cover book.It was soft cover and small, could not get the full effect of the photos being that small. All in all, I would not purchase it again for a gift in this format.Pictures were pretty though.

Product Description

The perfect geometry and exquisite beauty of nature is nowhere so clear to us as in the snowflake. But how have we been able to appreciate this infinitesimal wonder in all its crystalline glory? This book, as much a work of art as a testament to science, reveals how one of the snowflake’s most inspired photographers came to such intimate knowledge of his craft and its fleeting focus. Beautiful pictures illustrate Kenneth Libbrecht’s story of the microphotography of snow crystals, from the pioneering work of Wilson Bentley in the 1890s right up to Ken’s own innovations in our age of digital images. A breathtaking look at the works of art that melt in an instant, this is a book to page through and savor, season after season.

I bought this book for the sole purpose of just looking at snowflake photographs but have found myself becoming lost in their symmetry where I not only look, but study the amazing variety and shapes. Each photograph draws my breath as I contemplate the incomprehensible beauty of design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!
Our last name is snow...so I tend to have a thing anything related to our last name. This book is great to have on your coffee table or to use as illustrations for children lessons on how each snowflake is different. If you want more scientific answers for snoflakes and such there are other books out there, but for me...this one will do nicely. It incorporates quotes from various sources which is a nice touch. The photographs are breathtaking and I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tornado photography ever in one book.
Short and sweet. Finest collection of tornado and storm chasing photos I've ever seen in one book. I have a collection of various books from the 50's through now, and I must say it is the best of the collection. Not a fact obviously, just my opinion. The price was steep (purchased it for my meteorologist brother for Christmas) and I had to pay a import tax because I could only find it published in England! Weird, something not right about that. Paid I think around $10 for the import tax, a complete rip off. Then I saw the book and thought...."I'm going to buy this for myself, this is a great book!" So I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very neat book.
This book is not just a coffee table book with giant pictures of tornadoes. With that out in the open, this book is amazing. It does have some very large and wonderful pictures of tornadoes and other types of weather storms. It also outlines what the storm chaser went through on each particular storm. Very neat book to have if you like this type of stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning, Absolutely Stunning!!

This book follows Mike Hollingshead and Eric Nguyen on a bunch of different storm chases covering pretty much all of Tornado Alley. Its basically a "Best Of" selection of pictures from those chases and the resulting body of work is nothing short of stunning. This is mother nature at her ugliest and at the same time her most beautiful. This body of work shows this duality amazingly well. To even try and explain the beauty of these pictures in this review is futile at best. No words can do work like this justice. Its like comparing a review of the Mona Lisa to the Mona Lisa itself. With that being said I wont bother going into any detail about the pictures themselves except to say that they are brilliant.

I am both a photographer and a storm chaser so I can appreciate first hand not only how difficult it is to obtain a lot of these photographs but also just how much time is invested in such pursuits. Most people don't realize that Storm Chasing is 98% driving/boredom and 2% crazy madness. It requires a mind boggling amount of driving and an equal amount of patience. Any average Joe can get lucky and snap some amazing shots of this type of weather if he is in the right place at the right time but to put together a body of work like this requires ambition, persistence, patience, skill, and of course a little bit of lady luck. Being an active storm chaser really puts this body of work in perspective and ultimately just makes it that much better.

Storm chasing has become insanely popular over the last 5 years and there are actually quite a few books now that focus on this subject matter. I own a lot of these books and have read many others at my local library and I can safely say that this is hands down one of the best bodies of storm pictures I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of them over the last 12 years. Unfortunately Eric passed away in 2007. Given the circumstances, this book ultimately winds up being an absolutely perfect eulogy and I for one cant think of a better way of remembering Eric than through his work.

If your interested in storm chasing or just have a love for storm pictures then this book is simply a MUST BUY. You wont find a better collection of storm related pictures period.

5 Stars and then some!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Storm Photos!
This is a great book for anyone that is a serious storm chaser...or for someone like me (someone that likes to watch storms from his living room or deck)! :-)The photos are excellent and I'm happy to say that this book is absolutely packed with great photos. There is enough text to describe the photos and the circumstances surrounding the storm, but it is NOT heavy-laden with boring text at all.Really a perfect balance.

I highly recommend this book!Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Photos are wonderful
Being an amateur storm chaser, this book was an excellent depiction of what I want to see. With only a couple storms under my belt and some okay tornado/ mesocyclone pictures, this book let me see what years of storm chasing could bring.
I enjoyed the photos very much and some of the descriptions about the storms as well.
If you like energized storms, you may want to consider this book for your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful landscape shots I've ever seen.
If the title of this document is not explicit enough for you, I'll explain: The book contains only photographs (lots of them) reproduced in an extremely high-quality edition. It has a shot of a romanic castle that is simply incredible, it has another of a shore that seems an screenshot of a Lovecraft's novel. A medieval fortress next to a lake...

And a whole chapter, named "heaven's hyeroglyphics", that contains lots of LIGHTNING STORMS, and this chapter is worth the price of the book.

Product Description
The weather used to be reported after the news; today, it often is the news. Tracking news-making weather, storm chasers seek dramatic images of tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, lightning storms, and other extreme and unusual weather phenomena. News organizations compete to broadcast and publish these images because people care passionately about the weather.

Jim Reed is one of America’s most successful and award-winning storm chasers in an era when global climate is changing. His fifteen years of photography documents this change. As the years go by, he sees spring come earlier, summers get hotter, and tornadoes and hurricanes increase in frequency and intensity. In Storm Chaser, a beautiful picture book about some of the most powerful—and sometimes deadly—phenomena in our world, Reed shares his best images and his experiences as he tracks these storms throughout the country. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Photos!
I bought this as a gift for my favorite Storm Chaser. He totally loves it and it has become a favorite staple on his coffee table.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Global Warming is Real"
I had incorrectly assumed from the title that Mr. Reed was a meteorologist with a talent for capturing stunning weather-related images. I had hoped to glean some insights into the weather phenomena he photographs, or at least some information on the type of equipment and techniques he uses. While the photos in this book are stunning, I was not expecting it to be a vehicle for global warming advocacy.Reed's bibliography does include some useful websites, but sadly also points us to paranormal guru Art Bell for further reading, as well as to Leonardo DiCaprio's sophomoric documentary "11th Hour", Al Gore's much-discredited "An Inconvenient Truth" (see SPPI- Science and Public Policy Institute's 35 Inconvenient Truths), and Emmerich's "The Day After Tomorrow".For climate change-related science fiction, I much prefer Larry Niven's Fallen Angels or Michael Crichton's State of Fear.Nonetheless, Reed is a master at capturing dramatic images of weather events.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what was advertised
I came to Storm Chaser via a science blog that showed several pictures with the kind of drama you see in the cover picture.
The four images displayable on Amazon are the only images I found interesting in the whole book.(Well maybe one or two more).
The white on black printing throughout is Wired magazine circa 1997.
The pictures in the book are often amazingly small.
Blow up the 4 images in the Amazon preview and put them in a PDF and be done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tornadoes!
