Product Description

This edition of WIlliam Kitchiner's The Cook's Oracle, the American verison of the seventh edition published in 1830, is a complete reference of English cookery in the nineteeth century. An optician, inventor of telescopes, amateur musician and exceptional cook, Kitchiner was famous in the 19th century, both in England and America. In this work, he presents the recipes he cooked himself (the Prince Regent, later King George IV of England, was a frequent dinner guest), as well as directions on how to cook these recipes in the most efficient and economical way.

This isn't in any sense an "exact replica" - since it simply reprints 68 out of 500 plus pages. The Cook's Oracle wasn't first published in 1829 - not least because Kitchiner would have been dead a couple of years by then. The first edition was 1817, published by Samuel Bagster of London. Product Description
This cookbook captures the essence of what bistro food cooking is all about - informality. Pancakes filled with scrambled eggs, accompanied by Clonakilty black pudding with a cider jus, and Chetwynd blue cheese dip, should arouse the curiosity of those who enjoy cooking and eating. The author provides the reader with straightforward recipes. The foodstuffs he uses are unpretentious, and should be familiar to readers. Michael Clifford is the author of "Cooking with Clifford". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good!
This wonderful book is a history of English cooking from the fourteenth century to today, complete with recipes! Each of the five chapters examines how English cooking developed during that time, and is then followed by a great number of recipes organized into: soups, eggs, fish, poultry and game, meat, vegetables, desserts, sauces, breads and cakes, pickles and preserves, and forcemeats and garnishes (though not always in that order). The text is very well written and interesting, and the recipes are very good.

My one complaint against this book (1973 edition, but purchased here) is that the text runs so close to the binding that you have to stretch the book to read everything, and a paperback will not stand up to that for too long. But, that complaint aside, this is a great book, and I am very glad that I bought it (the Toad in the Hole was great, and I look forward to trying many other recipes). I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read
Even if you never make a single recipe out of it, just the information and the wording of some of the older recipies makes it a worthwhile and delightful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let rumors of English food being terrible fool you !
This book is a very well put together cookbook, that I have throughly enjoyed. This book deals with some period recipes as well as more modern ones. The recipe book is simply filled with tons of recipes, she does an excelling job of incorporating a wide variety of recipes into this book. There are no pictures, but she does offer some background info on many recipes.
This book is worth its price for its Apple Orange Tart, which makes up the best apple pie recipe that I have had the pleasure of enjoying.I would highly recommend this book if you are looking to flesh out your British collection of recipes, or if you are looking for a cookbook that offers a good selection of very good tasting period recipes. ... sorry to say that, but this is a relatively boring book, not as excited as it topic implies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best -of British!

4-0 out of 5 stars The same book as "Traditional food from Wales"
I hadn't realized it until I got fairly deep into my university library's online research system, because Amazon doesn't give an indication of this. But this is the Welsh release of a book that was reprinted in New York as Traditional Food from Wales.

If you see used copies of that book, the content should be pretty much the same as this, though I don't yet know if the New York publishers did anything like Americanizing British spelling or not since the interlibrary loan hasn't come through yet. (I didn't want to purchase two copies of an out of print book and take it out of someone else's hands just to compare spellings...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Positively the BEST
What a joy to find this book has been printed again! This is THE complete cookbook for traditional Welsh food from the humblest cottage to the grandest country house. It has not only the recipes themselves, but commentary on the ways of life in the regions of Wales, and how the food was gathered and prepared historically. There are wonderful photos to illustrate it, too.If you only get one book on Welsh cookery, this is THE one. ... Product Description
The Idea in compiling this little book is to place on record several hundred of our ancestors' most typical recipes for eating and drinking. Some can only be looked upon as of historical interest, while many, with slight modification, can be used today. - These recipes have been collected through the generosity of members of the Women's Institutes, in England and Wales, from their family records. At the present time such recipes are in danger of being lost owing to the passing of so many country houses as the centres of family life." Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Home Farm Books are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. ... Read more

Product Description
TV's most popular chef, Gordon Ramsay, bridges the gap between his famous chef's table (situated in the white heat of his restaurant kitchen) and his table at home with Tana and their young family. His latest cookbook is packed with simple, seasonal, modern British recipes.Gordon lives life in the fast lane, travelling the world to foster his many hugely successful business enterprises and to film his highly acclaimed TV series. But, despite the commitments of a busy work life, he has always believed that families should sit around their tables to eat together as much as possible. His latest cookbook gathers together over 100 inspiring and well-constructed recipes which everyone will enjoy cooking for their friends and family, including Chorizo, broad bean and mint couscous, Scallop brochettes with coriander and chilli butter, Smoked salmon and horseradish cream tarts and Toffee and chocolate steamed pudding. The recipes embody Gordon's strongly held opinion that we should support local producers and farmers' markets, that we should cook with seasonal fresh ingredients which haven't travelled miles to reach our plates and that we should celebrate the wealth of regional dishes available to us from Cornish crab soup to Bakewell tarts.Gordon shares the dishes that he loves to cook (and eat) when he's off duty. With chapters covering Hot and Cold Soups; Pasta and Grains; Fish and Shellfish; Meat and Poultry; Pies and Tarts; Vegetables and Salads; Puddings and Ices and Coffee and Chocolate, each recipe is introduced with an insight into why he has chosen it and includes tips on how to re-create it perfectly. With emphasis on simplicity for stunning results, the majority of the recipes are short and easy to cook. This beautiful book has been created by one of Britain's top designers, in tandem with an amazing young photographer. While food is king in this book, sprinkled as it is with candid photos of Gordon and the family, Cooking for Friends allows you to share his love of life and the good things in it. ... Read more
