Welsh and Old English nature poetry show important similarities in both mood and imagery. However, modern critics have done both a disservice by viewing each too narrowly within what Higley calls the ''anglocentric tradition.'' Study of Old English has suffered from its isolation from the Welsh, in particular from the lessons to be learned from its ambiguous, i.e., ''uncooperative'' qualities. Taking an inclusive approach that extends from phonology to imagery, her book examines poems from both traditions and achieves new and persuasive readings. Between Languages attempts to bring obscure and moving poems into a wider critical orbit, and it offers new translations of The Seafarer, Maxims II, and Wulf and Eadwacer among the English and The Sick Man of Abercuawg, Song of the Old Man, and various gnomic and wisdom poems among the Welsh, including one of the few complete English translations in this century of a vatic poem from The Book of Taliesin.Welsh and Old English poetry, moreover, have often been described as like or different from each other. Higley breaks this cycle of mutual marginalization with theoretically innovative discussions of each text on its own merits. She joins scholars like Allen Frantzen, Lee Patterson, and Suzanne Fleischmann in pointing out that medievalists have, to their own peril, failed to avail themselves of the subtle resources of postmodern criticism.Between Languages makes accessible to a modern audience the traditions of Welsh and Old English poetry, which are at once parallel, unique, and mutually informative, and at the same time distinct from poetry since the eighteenth century. ... An Intriguing Approach to Understanding Early Welsh and English Poetry
Sarah Lynn Higley looks at the critical traditions in scholarship of Welsh poetry and finds that at least one of the underlying problems scholars have with early Welsh poetry is that they're trying to study it like it's Old English poetry when, in fact, it's not. Old English verse, for all its problems, tends to try to explain itself, to make sense of what the author has to say for the sake of the hearer. Welsh verse, like Japanese haiku, goes together very differently.

As a general rule, scholars assume that poetry is meant for unpacking - that it is the use of language to transmit an idea in a clever, artistic or metaphoric manner, but that somewhere beneath there lies a straightforward version of the message, if only one can interpret and fill in the gaps in order to find it. But it's just possible, 1) that the message isn't there or that 2) the poem is meant only to allude to it, or perhaps even to hide it forever, in which case the decoding of poetry is like breaking a cypher in order to find out that it contains the words to "Mary had a little lamb," and not the enemy's battle plans.

Higley attempts to show that while Old English and early Welsh poetry both contai much in the way of uncooperative texts - poems that are difficult to understand across languages, cultures and time - there is a difference between the problems of understanding the two and that one can only get at the Welsh by shedding traditional approaches to Old English verse and looking in a new way.

Higley's language runs from the plainspoken to the overly scholarly, to the extent that this is meant for an educated reader as opposed to fellow scholars. But in the main, this is an accessible work for those who are interested in Old English and/or Welsh verse and in the nature of how poetry works. The examples given clearly relate to the points being made. And the appendix of Old English and Welsh poetry in the original and in translation is a treasure trove.
