1-0 out of 5 stars Get off your soapbox please.
Like others who have written reviews about this book, I loved the idea of a thorough look at the Rede.I found this book to be, at best, a very unbalanced look. Some lines of the Rede were skimmed over so quickly they might as well not have been mentioned at all.Other parts were written about extensively, and from an obviously biased viewpoint. Some of these views I agree with, or at least sympathize with, others I definely do not.Reguardless of my own views however, I found myself often angered by the manner in which the author argued his case.Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but apparently this author would not agree with me, because his opinion would seem to be the only one that counts. If you do agree with him, you may possibly like his book.I did not, and returned it the day after I read it, having no desire to give him one cent of my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Introduction
This book is a good Wiccan 101. It simply outlines the basic tennants of Wiccan belief. It gives a few examples for the outline. However, what makes it all worthwhile is recommended reading at the end of each chapter. So even though the sparse explanation may leave you wanting more, more resources are at your fingertips. The format of the book and nice font makes the information absorption easy. Also the small book size makes a nice book to carry around.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for having the gaul to show up here...

Reviewer: Mark Ventimiglia (Jerseyville, IL) - See all my reviews
This is "not" a review since it is posted by me, Mark Ventimiglia, the author of this work. First, I would like to address the many upset people that this book, and my views, has offended. Universal Truths cannot be changed! These Universal Truths are not man-made laws like speed limits, constitutional amendments, etc. They "cannot" be changed! Furthermore, for all the people that claim I am hurting them by preaching "right morality" my only reply is this: I am only teaching what "needs" to be taught. If you cannot accept this, it is your choice. But know this, by living a morally incorrect life, you are hurting yourself much more than I could ever hurt you. In all actuality, I am merely trying to teach "right morality" because I love you! Lastly, there are some people out there that claim I am not Wiccan because I use the terms "sin, enlightenment, righteousness, repent," etc... which are also used in other religions. HA! People, please think for a minute. I use these terms because they are universally accepted. IE: You don't have to look them up in a dictionary to understand their meaning. Understand this: Ignorance of the law is no exception. You don't have to understand gravity to be within its grip. Likewise, you don't have to believe in these Universal Laws to be subject to their consequinces. Again, the choice is yours. I knew there would be much controversey when I wrote this book. So be it.

I will tell you sir that I admire your courage to face us. Some authors shrink in the face of negativity, others lash out. You didn't.

That said, you can add me to the list of readers that strongly disagrees with some of your points(the ones already pointed out).

Most of the book is great I think. It was an informitive read for me,having never had expeirence to ANY version of the rede before. The shortened version is something I will be sure to add to my book of shadows.

But I must say that I cannot stand by your vies on homosexuality at all. This religion teaches compassion and non-prejudism. That should be our goal. We can always respectfully disagree with others, even try to gently guide them on a better path if we beleive the one they are on is self-destructive. And I have no doubt that was your intention. But there's nothing gentle or subtle about your Evangelical scare tactics which are better suited for a Jerry Falwell sermon or Jonathan Edward's "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God". It's attitudes where the line between loving guidance and fiery hatred is blurred if not crossed that have helped lead me from the Church to the Craft.

And also, I cannot agree with your views on non-vegetarianism. Yes, we all know that a meat diet is bad for you. You do a great job of really outlining that too. But there's a point most people forget that I need to remind you of sir: it doesn't matter if it's an apple, beef, or a mushroom, there is ALWAYS a loss of life involved in eating. Plain and simple. I fail to see how one can distiguish between the life of an animal and that of a plant or a fungus. They are all living creatures of the Great Mother. The only way to not inflict suffering on a living thing to bring ourselve nurishment is to make vitamin-filled plastic.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment
This one is lucky to get 2 stars from me. I loved the concept of exploring the meanings of the couplets of the Rede and applying them to your life. However, after reading the book I was disappointed that it did not meet it's potential.

The author imposes some unusual interpretations onto some of the couplets, gets alot of information wrong, and espouses some personal views that are not of the majority in the Wiccan/Pagan community. He fails to give any accurate history of the Rede or any reference to who is generally thought to be it's author (or authors) and continually asserts that the Rede is "ancient" (it was first published in the 1970's). He also makes several references to his connection to Raymond Buckland, possibly in an effort to legitimize himself, his views, and the poor research he's presenting to us. However, anyone who's read Buckland's books will know that he does not share in the views that this author expresses.

Their is no doubt that Mr. Ventimiglia is passionate about Wicca or the Rede...but to use it to judge and alienate the GLBT community is abhorrant. In one section he actually claims that "homosexuality" is an afront to the Goddess and that gay people are somehow giving into a sexual whim by "doing what feels good". And here I thought that the Goddess said, "All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals"?

In another section he makes the bizarre assertion that only Native Americans are somehow allowed to consume meat...the rest of us are going against the Goddess, yet dairy is apparently okay because "milk is a perfect food"...huh?

Another big problem is his chapter on "the Witches' Rune". He mistakenly interprets this to be about Runology and spends alot of time trying to explain a complex form of divination...when "The Witches' Rune" is simply a beloved chant used in the Gardnerian tradition to raise power. Apparently he's never been introduced to it in any of the several publications it's appeared in. He even kicks that dead horse by rewording it to "the Seax-Wiccan Runes" to fit it into his own tradition and as an opportunity to, yet again, make reference to his connection to Raymond Buckland.

Despite the negatives...there were some decent things. I liked the chapter on wind direction and the Weathervane...I found that refreshing. I liked the layout of the book and the concept. The cover art and graphic design were appealing, and I loved the smaller size, and the fact that it was hardback...it's difficult and rare to find hardback books anymore in the New Age section.

So despite some of the yuck on the inside...it was presented well in a very classy-looking package. Apparently, you CAN polish a turd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sticking to the original
Nowadays, of course it's terribly unfashionable to be homophobic, and no self-respecting author who's made a lot of money from another book on witchcraft is going to admit it publicly, but Mr. V is just keeping up the original line of the 2nd generation Wiccans (the founder of Seax Wicca and the dude who helped make Mr. V famous). There may be a lot of new people interested in the Seax path who are unfamiliar with the stance towards homosexuality of it's founder, rapidly publicly changed to help shift books! Three cheers for honesty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every beginning Wiccan
I have recommended this author's website, and now his finished book, to all the friends who've asked me for guidance in learning the basics of Wicca.Ethics should always be one of the first lessons, if not THE first. Here you can find the most complete history of the Rede and Law of Return I have ever seen in one place. The historical component of the book is the most valuable, and represents a huge amount of research and effort on the part of the author. It is for this section that I primarily recommend the work.

I find the applied ethics section a little basic, and would even challenge some of the assertions a bit.Nevertheless, it is very well done and almost the first book of its kind to be SO clear on this topic.I believe it is the best first step in developing a personal ethical system rooted in the Rede and Law of Return.I recommend reading some standard textbooks on ethics and thinking through them from a Wiccan perspective after finishing this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well thought out and easy to read
John J. Coughlin has written a good book on Wicca ethics. As a non-wiccan Pagan (Setian) I tend to view the Wiccan world at best as one of great beauty, and at worst as place for weak thinking.Coughlin has created a balanced book.It explains the rational basis of Wiccan ethics that could stand up in a philosophy course. He provides some good thoughtful guidelines for ethical practice of magic, which make this book a useful book to alternative religions. He has also used scholarly and critical tools to examine the origin of certain ideas in modern Wicca.I think this would be a good book for non-Wiccans to read to have a better grasp of the ethical basis of the Craft, and a useful book in generla for understanding how ethics can and should work among intelligent members of alternative faiths. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars If I Could I Would Give It Less Than 1 Star
This is absolutely one of the most ridiculous books I have ever read. Some of the spells using the computer are just amazingly simplistic and most likely ineffective. I'm embarassed that I bought this book. If you want to get involved in Wicca then read some books by Scott Cunningham or Ray Buckland and learn real Wicca the way it should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technomagick - the next step forward
How original - a cutting edge book! Considering I spend hours at my computer everyday I see no reason not to create sacred space there and enjoy magickal energy. Telesco and Knight have given the reader many really unique and fun ideas for doing just that -- including pathworking with your computer and casting spells using your "send" key.

A keeper!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for surfing....
Wow, the novice Techno Pagans now have a book all their own.And a strange little book it is.Trish Telesco and Sirona Knight have compiled a collection of information that makes a good introduction to the beginning web surfer.

The first part of the book deals with the basics of getting onto the Internet, from choosing an ISP to surfing with security.Very good for beginners.

The next part of the book deals with setting up your computer "altar", cyber rituals, computer wizardry and techno-spells.I found this almost silly. While my computer is no way my "altar", I do spend alot of time at my "puter", and I make my space as comfortable as possible.Probably what Ms. Telesco and Ms. Knight were trying to get at.

The meat and potatoes of this book are the Wiccan Web Sites listed in the book.If you are looking for sites to surf, there are many hours of surfing and reading to be had here.

This book covers loads of material, from chat room etiquette to building a web site. There is a section on emoticons, ICQ and many of the basics that you may not have thought about.Defraging your drive, complete with a spell (how many times have you prayed that defrag will not mess up your hard drive... certainly makes sense to me..) to cyber Gods and Goddesses, there is some new, original material here along with the standard computer buzz words.

While not for everyone, I do think the collection of Wiccan Web Sites is a good draw for this book. Web sites change.Already, Green Egg is gone and will be missed.Others will come and go, this book will have to be updated on a regular basis.

So, if you are looking for a beginners guide to the Wiccan Internet, and you feel the "Idiot" book is not for you, The Wiccan Web is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars a way to find wiccan info on the web

3-0 out of 5 stars Wellness in Mind, Body and Spirituality
Laura Perry is a naturopath, teacher, shaman and Wiccan Priestess.Ms. Perry presents us with her idea of blending earth based spirituality with natural wholeness in this book.

While it is titled "Wiccan Wellness" it appears to be more general in its focus, an all around book of natural health and wellness and is more general in its spiritual aspects, which is a good thing and should have been emphasized rather than trying to limit it to Wicca. It would appeal to a broader base, and not limit itself in its scope.

But what deserves focus is this book's approach to good health, exercise, creating your own personal sacred spaces and living in a healthy atmosphere which you create for yourself. Create positive personal affirmations in the form of finding your own strengths.Develop a exercise program for yourself, plant some greenery (Magickal Green People), value your work and create a healthy work environment are some of the topics for personal development.

The book covers many topics like plant associations, feng shui, personal journaling, healthy surroundings, natural healthcare (and how to find it in your area), rites of wellness and so much more.Natural healthcare covers such topics as acupuncture and acupressure, aromatherapy, Ayurveda, the Alexander technique and other practices of health maintenance. There are lists of suppliers and further reading on much of the material.

The book blends the needs of the mind, body and spirit together to create a balance.

The chapters are laid out well and flow through the book and there is an index in the back of the book for quick reference.

This is a good beginner's book on personal health and care and blending it with earth based spirituality. The focus may say "Wiccan" but I think it could work for any one following an earth based spiritual path and is looking at developing a program of personal health and wellness. ... Read more

Sharing enchanting tales, meditations, rituals, and magical techniques, neo-pagan Timothy Roderick weaves a colorful introduction to Wicca, Old Europe's earth-centered mystical tradition. Roderick shows how to build a relationship with the divine in all things and access the power of spirit in everyday life. Each chapter begins with a personal account of shamanic magic, continues with an archetypal tale illustrating a theme ("The Secret," "Initiation," "A Golden Reward"), and concludes with exercises to guide readers in their own spiritual practice. Apprentice to Power offers an accessible path toward greater fulfillment, profound change, mystical insights, and even miracles. 5-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST FOR PAGANS
I feel somewhat obligated to disclose that I am not Pagan and have never practiced Wicca.I am, in fact, a Christian.I will not go into the detail of how this book reached my hands, but simply state that I have read it from cover to cover and have gone back and re-read many chapters.

This book told (what I consider to be) personal "parables" of the author that related to important lessons that he needed to learn in order to grow as a human being and fully experience life. What makes it a five star book is that unlike many authors that write about religious matters (regardless of which religion) or self-actualization, Roderick accomplishes the incredible task of imparting his lessons/stories without coming off as preachy or condescending.Roderick's writing is incisive, focusing on personally confronting universal truths about the human condition.

That being said, the format of this book is excellent and keeps the reader from getting bored. The basic structure of each chapter makes this possible. Each chapter is set up as follows:(1) an invocation that is about a page; (2) a tale from old times of the lesson to be learned (a/k/a "Magical Law"); (3) Timothy Roderick's personal parable of learning the lesson/Magical Law in question, and (4) a detailed "recipe" for a Wiccan enchantment invoking the Magical Law.The book is structured so that chapters may be read out of order.

The chapters I found most compelling were:Hermes, Demeter and Sin.But, the entire book is excellent and offers something for just about everyone. In summary, the book is commendable for it content, its structure as well as the writing style of the author.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed.
Though well written, the core of this book is about Buddhist priniciples with some Castaneda-esque moments thrown in .

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Work
This is an excellent book, and should be on the required reading list of any contemporary Pagan mystic. Many in the Pagan community may find Mr. Roderick's approach to the Craft to be too "Eastern," but since I consider myself, for lack of a better term, a "Taoist Witch," I felt right at home with much of his philosophy. It is definitely not a "how to" book; you will need to do your "Wicca 101" work elsewhere. For those who have a firm grounding in, and are seeking something beyond, the fundamentals of Wicca, this is the book for you.The focus of the book is on living a magical life in the fullest sense of that phrase, and the exercises that are given are directed to that end, with little if any time spent on fundamentals such as Circle casting or Quarter calling.Chapter IX does detail the Sabbats as practiced in the author's Tradition, but those pages account for a very small percentage of the book, and are addressed at the end.

Because of the emphasis on the magical life, and the lack of generic "how to" material such as spell formulae and correspondence tables, the book reads more like Castenada than Ravenwolf, but again I think this its strength. At times, it even felt a little as if the author were describing Ceremonial Magic rather than Wicca, but I think this is simply because it is such a radical departure from the bulk of contemporary Wiccan books. If we agree that much of what found its way into Gardnerian Wicca came from the Western (i.e. Mediterranean) Mystery traditions, and that these in turn were heavily influenced by Eastern thought, then the overall tone of the book is quite understandable and natural.

I think the average contemporary Pagan is either going to love this book or hate it.I think it will be especially challenging to those who see Wicca as springing from the Western European experience, independent of Eastern influence. But whether you love it or hate it, I think it is a valuable read.If nothing else, I think it will cause the committed reader to look long, hard and honestly at their beliefs, practices and individual philosophy of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important addition to any Wiccan/Pagan library
I don't usually like magic books written in the 'first person' because they can be too preachy. This book is definitely the exception. The author describes his magical training with humility and thoughtfulness. He doesn't speak in riddles and is never condescending.

This is a great book for a novice to get them started on their path.It is also a great book for an advanced pratictioner because it is easy to identify with the training that he has experienced.

A truly original book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Apprentice to Power : A Wiccan Odyssey to Spiritual Awakenin
LOVED IT! This book has a wonderful way of showing you new ways to look @ your life & the world around you. This was my introdution to pagan literature... and it's not easy to find ones on the subject that are this interesting, eye opening AND easily understandable. No mumbo-jumbo, or non-stop talk of deities & history to bog down your brain & stomp on your enthusiasm for the life-style. A more personal account of how one individuals path progressed. And some lovely, simple rituals @ the end of each chapter. I only wish Mr. Roderick would have shared more about how he found his path & teachers. * its more about the feelings involved w/ones choices & life consciousness. IF your looking for new ways of looking at life, a different perspective & some insight... this IS the book to start with! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but...
This book was interesting, but not exactly what I had in mind. She had alot of personal influences, which was creative, but I was looking for more general and consistent information on feng shui.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...
I have been to one of Alexandria's workshops on Wiccan Feng Shui so I was able to ask her some question about the book.I had already read the book and there were some things that I didn't understand, so I was lucky to have her answer them.

It is an interesting concept.I am Wiccan but I study the Eastern Religions and tend to use this more in my spirituality.I have also read many books on Feng Shui and attended one class.

Just didn't resonate with me.And Alexandria, although nice (and pretty, I might add), she is a bit different that I in both thoughts and taste.

Still, it was an easy and interesting read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wiccan Feng Shui
Being rather new to both Wicca and Feng Shui, I thought this book would be very interesting and helpful, as both practices do have some similar approaches.I was somewhat disappointed in this book for two reasons. One, the bagua the author uses is different than the other feng shui books I've read, which creates some confusion. Two, the author introduces 'star runes'...drawings she's been shown in dreams. While this is interesting, I felt that is something that is her own personal tool and for me it added a distracting factor to the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What I wanted to know!
This is a must have for anyone intending to write their own rituals, or who want to know the 'why' behind the rituals they do!Firstly the Author introduces you to the Elements of Air, Earth, Water and Fire. She explains the significance of each, and gives some basic concepts about each, listing the directions, tools etc associated with them.Basic stuff you think, but she adds her own theories that she has gained through experience, and while she doesn't try to 'convert' you to what she thinks, it certainly makes you think and widens your perceptions!

She then goes through each step of a basic ritual outline, and not only explains how to do the steps (what she terms as the 'Earth' sections), but also the theology (Air), mythology (Water), and mysticism (Fire) behind each of those steps. The way she has linked these to the Elements is very clever, but also helps you to become better acquainted with each Element, as well as give good order and balance to the book.
Some of the insights she gives into the craft have really opened my eyes, and reaffirmed what I believe - but gave me a way to express it.
She is a big one for balance and polarity, and ensures that each step of the ritual explained is not only balanced, but makes sense and is balanced as a whole.

The only reason I haven't given this book 5 stars was because she was very 'coven' focused, and I enjoy practicing as a solitary. It is also obvious that she comes from a very 'formal and ritualised' background, and while that is very helpful when wanting to learn about the steps and meaning of ritual, I choose to practice differently.

All in all, I'm VERY glad that I spent the money on this book, and can see myself referring to it over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Future Classic
What more could you wish for? Lipp shows her expertise and experience, we are fortunate to have access to a work like this one. This book is a "must" for the solitary as well as the student of craft and a wonderful tool for teachers. The author introduces the elements in turn with sound information for the reader to explore and learn a solid ritual foundation; the cornerstone of any magical system. A precious tool both in a traditional context as well as for those evolving their own traditions.

What can I say...I LOVE this book. I've known how to do the "basics" for years, and now that I have read this book - I feel like I was missing something the whole time. Everyone always worries..."am I doing this right", that most of the time they don't get a chance to ask "why", or "what exactly is the purpose of this...". The Elements of Ritual gives us the chance to have those questions (and more) answered in a way that is easy to understand, and makes sense. It takes us through...step-by-step, each of the core parts that make up Wiccan ritual, and explains each one from the point of view of the 4 elements ( Air...why we do it; Water...what is the mythology behind it; Fire...what is the meaning of it; Earth...how we do it). It does an excellent job of dispelling some common "myths"associated with Wiccan ritual - such as the idea of "sacrifices". Did you know your ritual isn't really complete without one? (I can hear the collective GASP - "Wiccan's don't do sacrifices!" To which I answer..."but what is a sacrifice?") Truly Iwish I had read this book a long time ago. If you are anything like me...just reading through the first couple of chapters will have you going, "Oh...I get it now!!!" Truly, I can't say enough good things about this book. Overall it is an invaluable tool for advancing one's practice. I highly recommend this book to everyone, not only to read...but also to be included as an essential book in one's resource library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading for most Magicians of any tradition
First I am not a Wiccan and never have been.My own tradition is Runic, though I will do work with Hermeticists and I could see myself doing work alongside Wiccans if it seemed like a good idea.Perhaps I can see past her strong opinions in part because they just don't apply to my practice.I also noticed a few knowledge blind-spots in her book (for example, Greek temples have their idols in the center, and if she was aware of it, I think she would have mentioned this in defence of her arrangement).

However....Among more scholarly Neopagans, Wicca has a bad name because many Wiccans misuse and heavily abuse mythology, often get their facts wrong, and usually value out-dated and discredited research ("The White Goddess" and "The Golden Bough") over more modern works.Lipp avoids this problem entirely. She shows herself to be remarkably knowledgeable about pagan mythology in general, avoids abusing it too much, and tends to get more right than she does wrong. She also addresses interesting topics such as blood sacrifice in a reasonable and largely unbiased manner.

Now, there are a few things that any magician can learn from this work:

1)Consistency matters.Time and again, her main considerations come down to a consistent representation of symbolism.Whether or not one chooses to go with her recommendations, she certainly makes one think about this issue.

2)Thinking through things.

I would recommend this work for most magicians of any tradition. However, the fact that the author is strongly opinionated means that the work cannot be recommended to people who are insecure and are threatened by strong opinions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my way but a good read
I think its a very informative read but I felt like it was against what I love about paganism. It was too rigid and not personal enough to the person.Yes in every ritual there are certain things that one should do for protection sake or ritual sake but there were so many rules, I felt like I had lost my reasoning for my beliefs. But I think its good to see why and how and then mix it up with what you feel in your heart is YOUR right way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Much-Needed Book
Despite being one of the fastest growing religious movements in the world today, contemporary Paganism has lacked a strong academic voice until now. While focusing primarily on Paganism in Britain, this collection of papersgoes a long way towards filling that void. I would strongly recommend thisbook to anyone, Pagan or not, who desires a deeper understanding of thecurrent Neo-Pagan movement worldwide.

This collection of fascinating papers resulted from the first academic conference on contemporary Paganism in Britain. The chapters cover all the various traditions which fall under the umbrella of Paganism - Druidry,Witchcraft, Heathenism, Shamanism, Goddess Worship, various forms ofmagickal practice, etc. There is also an excellent overview of the rootsof modern Paganism by Bristol historian Ronald Hutton.A good place tostart learning about this "fastest growing religion in Britain"(BBC 'Everyman').Best chapters are by Harvey, Harris, Simes andSutcliffe.Excellent read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Charmed novel
Emma Harrison did a superb job writing this Charmed novel. It is my favorite out of the handful of Charmed novels that I have read. I find her more interesting and more detailed than some of the other writers like Diana G. Gallagher. Harrison emphasizes each sister, and utilizes all their powers splendidly. Phoebe uses her Levitation offensively for once. I was happy she utilized that power because it's my favorite. It's almost flawless; although, it did get confusing during some of the battles and it was hard to keep up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, but still worth reading.
Despite the title, there is not much info on Wicca and the only moment when all things Wiccan were mentioned, is also when Piper not-so-subtly ridiculed and mocked the somewhat odd things practicing Wiccans believe. If Wicca is what you're looking for, this is not for you.

However, this book is average, nothing special or different, but at least they focused the attention on innocents as fellow Wiccans. The plot is intriguing and edgy enough to make you want to turn the page to find out whats next. Also, there are plenty of twists and turns that is certainly unexpected, as one thing leads to the other NOT. But what I find a great disappointment was after all that they went through, the "bad guys" were vanquished by Piper's molecular combustion power??? Thats it?!?!?!?!?! On the other hand, the evil enitity may not be as powerful as it seems, but its just not satisfying. Other than the ending, this book is worth a good read to whet your Charmed appetite. Enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars -
this book is okay it's title mimics that of the very first pilot episode. other than that there are no major flaws in it otherthan the more recent books seem to be more frequently set out of san fransico, which is okay but makes the books less connected to the tv series. the story itself is good with some excellent twists.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite
This is one of my favourite Charmed book. The dialogue is funny and the story is interesting. If you're a Charmed fans, this book is a must.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complex, intriguing plot; but no Wiccan info, despite title
How gratifying to find an author who is obviously quite familiar with the world of "Charmed"; the powers & personalities of the Halliwells (& their friends & lovers) are depicted perfectly. While this should be mandatory for any author entrusted with a "Charmed" novel, it is, sadly (& infuriatingly), the exception in recent novels (the worst example being "Shadow of the Sphinx"; see my review of that book). "Something Wiccan..." has two main failings: one (I'll get to the other later) is that there is a paucity of humor--either situationally or in the witty dialogue that makes the TV episodes sparkle. However, the plot is complex and multi-layered, and filled with surprises; the ending features not just one, but two, surprise twists, neither of which I saw coming.
The biggest disappointment of the book (and what I consider the 2nd major failing), is the lack of insight into Wicca as a religion, and the differences between Witchcraft and Wicca (no, they are not synonomous terms or practices). The plot centers around a Wiccan retreat, which Paige is eager to attend in order to learn more about Wicca, while Piper & Phoebe reluctantly accompany her in the hope of catching whoever is kidnapping members of covens. While the book presents a reasonably good picture of a typical Gathering, and the diverse types of people who practice Wicca, it fails to give any real information as to just what Wiccans actually believe, their religious beliefs, holidays, rituals, etc. This plot presented a golden opportunity to enlighten readers who are understandably confused about Wiccans vs Witches, and a skilled writer (which I think this author is) could have slipped at least some basic info in among the action without sounding preachy.
A more general complaint (not aimed at this book exclusively) is that ever since Paige became a Charmed One, every subsequent novel has focused on her as the main character, with the main plot centering around her & told primarily from her viewpoint. In the earliest novels, the sisters seemed to take turns at center stage (e.g., Phoebe gets sent to the past, to old Salem; Prue's photo assignments have unexpected--and magical--ramifications; Piper volunteers her time with troubled, homeless teens, little knowing that the shelter is run by a warlock who brainwashes the teens to do his bidding) but they still functioned as a team, each of equal importance (i.e., The Power of Three, not Paige and her back-up group the Charmettes). Another stereotype the writers seem to be clinging to is Grouchy Piper and her Reluctance to Accept Paige as either a sister or a responsible adult (despite the fact that Paige, at approximately the age Phoebe was when they became the Charmed Ones, is obviously more responsible & goal-oriented than Phoebe was at that age).Granted, Piper is perhaps too anxious and even obsessed in her new role as the eldest sister, but since Piper & Paige now seem to be close on the TV series, showing mutual affection and respect, it's time that the books also reflected their current relationship. But ever since Paige's arrival, the writers seem mostly interested in her, content to sketch the other sisters as shadowy two-dimensional background figures. Phoebe has been the one most relegated to the background (though to be fair, this DOES reflect the trend on the TV show); it's natural that her divorce & new job have made her more serious, but the books haven't yet caught up with the tragedies in her life (e.g., in this book, she's still happily with Cole). Yet it's as if her role as the carefree, optimistic, effervescent free spirit has been arbitrarily re-assigned to Paige, while Phoebe has become a workaholic in her newspaper job.
But despite these flaws, the book does do a good job of portraying the Charmed Ones' powers and methods, without any embarrassing errors (at least, none that I caught). The dialogue rings true. And the plot is sophisticated and absorbing, a magical who-dunit, and I defy you to not to be surprised at the surprise double twist ending. (On thinking it over, I think that the ending was actually a little improbable--and more than a little confusing--but when I first read it, it had the wonderful quality of being both a total surprise and yet seeming perfectly logical in retrospect. Maybe any confusion I feel in looking back over it will be cleared up on a more careful second reading--which I definitely look forward to. ... Read more

It was an interesting read.I liked the insights into some of the more notable people in the craft.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wise Purchase
This wonderful book is a collection of candid interviews with some of the biggest names in Wicca, including Doreen Valiente, Starhawk, Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone, Judy Harrow, and Phyllis Curott. Writer and photographer Sally Griffyn reveals the vibrant diversity of Wicca with intimacy and a wealth of vivid photographs.

I find only one weakness in the book: the inclusion of an essay by a man who goes by the pseudonym Edmund. He claims to be a High Priest, a widely published and respected author and expert in the history of Paganism and Witchcraft for over 10 years. I question anyone who makes such claims from the broom closet. Additionally, he says that Wiccans can be atheists, which tells me he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does.

Nevertheless, beginners will learn much from Wiccan Wisdomkeepers and more experienced practitioners can see all the different directions their practice can take. The lavish photographs are sure to inspire.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures alone are worth purchasing this book.
After borrowing this book from a close friend, I knew I had to get a copy for myself. From Doreen Valiente's last poem to Patricia Kennealy Morrison's retelling of her pagan past (and present) with deceased husband Jim Morrison of The Doors, this book is a great addition to any pagan library.
If your journey is just getting started in the craft, or your path is well traveled, these well known pagan leaders offer insight to their own lifestyle and spiritality, with common ground being an affinity with nature.
The photos that accompany the interviews are brillant, with sharpness and clarity. Note: the Horned God was VERY inviting.
Only drawback, would have like to have seen more pagan authors/leaders being interviewed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent look at Deity
This book is actually a collection of essays compiled by Ms Harrow that explore the myths of and ways of worshipping particular deities in order to inspire Pagans in ways in which they can worship their own Gods.

The book begins with a very strong and interesting chapter on Anubis written by Geoffrey W. Miller. I really enjoyed his retelling of the myth of Anubis and Bata. I'd never heard the story before and until then, had no mind to explore the Egyptian mythology at all. His reteling made it accessible though and I was able to see the meaning of the story as well. I wasn't as impressed by his ritual but I did think he captured Anubis's personality ad offered some useful ways of working with him and other Gods of the underworld

The chapter on Brighid that followed was far and away my favourite. Alexei Kondratiev certainly knows how to use Celtic mythology to construct ways of worship, don't he? I particularly enjoyed his prayers and a now using one of them every night before bed. His description of her personaity and the idea that those she is patron to are her fster children was very, very accurate as well. He captured her supremely well andave memany idas on working with her.

To be honest, I wasn't overly impressd with the rather dry chapter on Aphrodite by Maureen Reddington-Wilde. It may be just that I have no interest in Greek mythology whatsoever but I also had no interest in Egyptian until I read the chapter on Anubis. I think she gave too much information on history ad not enough on the actual Goddess herself. A disappointing chapter.

The final chapter was also a favourite. It explores ways in which we can care for Gaia (Mother Earth) and includes many exercises in connecting with her and assessing the amount of damage as individuals we do unknowingly. I found it quite inspiring, reassuring, helpful and filled me with a sense of determination to better care for the Land.

Oveall, this book is more than worth the read. We need more Pagan books like it, books that focus on the spiriutality of beingPagan and not just the 101s of the "this is what we believe" variety. I enjoyed this book immensely.

4-0 out of 5 stars In depth study on 4 deities
Get four books for the price of one. That's what you have here. This book is for the more advanced Wiccan. Divided into four chapters, one written by each of the authors, you get an in-depth overview of one of four deities. Anibus, Brigit, Aphrodite and Gaia are all focused on in the Turning of the Year.

Ms. Harrow wrote the introduction (and conclusion). In which she explains that she hopes the readers will use this book as a template to focus on their own deity of choice.

Chapters each have their own unique feel. The things they have in common are a wealth of knowledge on the God or Goddess they are devoted to exploring. Correspondences, rituals, meditations and stories grace the pages of each chapter. I learned a lot about each deity that I hadn't known before.

This book is not for the faint of heart or those looking for some light reading. There were many times when I had to reread a passage to get the full meaning out of it. References to other writings are footnoted. Each chapter ends with a list of resources for additional study. There are songs, poetry and maps, as well as photography included in the book's pages.

If you are ready to bring your connection to God and Goddess to the next level, this book is for you. Expect to do some work, this book is for the serious Wiccan student.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book.
I really liked this book. I found it to be a very "smart" book. Its definitely not wicca 101. The personal experiences with the dieties made me want to explore my own paganism. The only problem that I have with this book is Judy Harrows' chapter. In my opinion she was a little rude when it came to her own practices. It is obvious that she does not believe that the gods are literal beings but she seems to convey it in such a way that she is practicing "real" paganism as opposed to the fake reconstructionists. Overall I would say buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wicca Spirituality Explored
This book explores the spirituality associated with Wicca. It is an examination of the exploration of personal experience with Deity.

The book is broken down into four sections. Each section takes one of the four Sabats not associated with the seasonal change. It explores a personal relationship between the Sabat, the person and the Deity of theirchoice.Covered here are Samhain/Anubis by Geoffrey W. Miller, Imbolc/Brigit by Aexei Kondratiev,Beltaine/Aphrodite by Maureen Reddington-Wilde and Lammas/Gia by Judy Harrow.

The aspects of the Deity chosen are discussed and the myths and legends surrounding the particular deity are told. The associations as seen by the person with their personal Deity and the connection between the Deityand the Sabat chosen are all covered in depth and on a personal level. These are intimate looks at how these people celebrate Deity and how they connect with and are guided by their chosen Gods and Goddesses.

There are stories of the Deities, discussions on personal connections and personal experiences. The book also includes rituals of connection to these Deities. The spirituality of these relationships are explored in depth, making this book unique in its content. This book carries the reader into very personal spiritual experiences almost allowing the reader to feel the connection between the writer and Deity.

This is a book of sharing as no other book I've seen lately. The emphasis is on what Wicca should be all about; the spirituality and the connection between individual and Deity. The writers carry this over from personal experience into life, community and into the earth itself.

We don't see many books of this nature on the market.I wish we had more like this.It is well written, covers many different aspects of the topic and even has an index for reference.

This is an essential book to add to your library no matter what your level of practice or length of time on your path. And if you are just starting out, it is an excellent guide for you to begin your chosen path. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I learned a Lot!!
At first I thought this was one of those books where I had to read someone else's thoughts, record, then play back. This book does have some of it, but great info as well! The medition, trance, pathworking, and how to lead a group in meditaton as well, make this book worthy of your time an a place on your book shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a grown-up meditation book!
Most of these books are just lists of meditations to try, that someone else has written.Sigh.

THIS one goes deep into the how-tos, the whys - Wildman gives instruction to people wanting to lead a group in trancework, instructions for having your own experience, how to deal with any problems that may come up, and lots more. This book is a wealth of information and instruction from someone who knows what she's talking about, a great read, and definitely something to keep on hand for reference.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Work on Trance and Pathworking From an Experienced HPs
Wiccan Meditations is among the most solid books available to modern Witches, on either the subject of trancework or on group workings.Though the book is easily accessible to solitaries, the wealth of coven and group-oriented exercises and the wisdom of advice on altered states available in this book make it a "must-have" for every coven leader. And the careful, informative way the material here is presented will make it a terrific spiritual guide to solitaries, too.Not nearly enough has been said about the ways that visualization and trance work are a cornerstone of Wiccan spirituality--and no one has covered the ground in as practical and thorough a way as Laura Wildman does here.

I strongly recommend this book, to novice Pagans looking to understand what the experience of being Wiccan is really about, and to coven leaders looking to beef up their stock of spiritual and psychic development tools for their own covens. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep, Enriching, and Enlightening
From the very moment I opened this book, I was immediately sucked in to what has become a handbook of daily devotionals to me. "The Circle Within: Creating a Wiccan Spiritual Tradition" is, in my opinion, absolutely one of the deepest and most profound books on the market when it comes to living as a Wiccan day in, day out, from minute to minute. The concept of living in such a way is one that Ms. Sylvan repeats throughout her book, and it's certainly worth repeating to the reader.

The style and tone of Ms. Sylvan's writing is simply poetic and beautiful. Her prayers, invocations, and affirmations are ones that I did not care to change the wording of. Naturally, it's best to create your own words in order to heighten your spiritual connection, but her words really resonated with me, and I saw zero need to change them. Furthermore, she continually reiterates that she is not the authority on Wicca nor does she bash Christianity or other religions (I find these traits to be a rarity among Wiccan authors.) In fact, she goes so far as encouraging you to look at other religions and how their daily practices have contributed to the strength and fortitude of their own faith, whatever it may be.

The book is presented in a very logical manner, from taking you through the basic understandings of what it means to be Wiccan, to simple - yet effective - ways to begin your deeper Wiccan spirituality, to setting up your temple, to more "intense" daily practices, and finally, her own personal "Book of Moonlight," which is a rich collection of her superbly-written personal prayers, dedications, daily rituals, etc.

The largest disappointment I found in this book was learning more about the author after I purchased the book. She has her own Facebook page, and on her Facebook page, she clearly states that she is no longer Wiccan. I certainly respect her decision not to practice Wicca anymore, but this really blows a huge hole in her "you can't be Wiccan once a month and on Sabbats; you need to live Wicca every day." If she no longer believes in Wicca, how did she manage to create such a beautiful book on dedicating one's life to the service of the Lord & Lady? This is just something to think on, not something to deter you from purchasing this treasure.

I absolutely recommend this book to ANYONE truly wanting to increase the depth of their Wiccan spirituality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book By Far
I bought this book, actually, at a local bookstore...and it is by far the BEST explanation of Wicca and the meaning of being a Wiccan out there. For years, I have searched for a book like this; Wicca is something I have always had a very strong pull towards, even when I had no idea what it was called.About 10 years ago I would periodically try to dwelve into the meaning behind Wicca; but a big brick wall was all these silly "how-to's" out there that were aimed at teenagers, nothing at all about understanding the spirituality behind it - the TRUE basis of Wicca.

It is still one of my favorite books to read, and I highly recommend anyone who wants to get beyond the sophomoric tomes out there to purchase this book. This should be one of the very first books you read if you're interested in learning more about Wicca.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous little book
I adored this book. I love Sylvan as an author thanks to her Body Sacred and then I read this one. It's just terrific. Nice little ideas, devotionals, prayers all for Wiccans.

4-0 out of 5 stars good little book
i didn't givethis book 5 stars because it covered info i already knew, but it was a good little read, and i would recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!

I've been a Pagan for over 20 years and this is definitely one of the *best* books I have ever read. Although written from a Wiccan point of view, this book can be an invaluable resource for people on any Pagan path.

If you are looking for logical, common sense ways of incorporating a greater level of spirituality into your life, this book is a must read.In our hectic modern lives finding time between work, school and family to also be spiritually active can be a daunting prospect. This book shows you how small acts of spirituality, performed with careful though and determined reverence can make a huge difference in your daily life.

“Normal” is highly overrated. And as easy to lose as your balance…

A Rhiannon Godfrey story.

At long last, Rhiannon is starting to fit into the ninth grade. She and Jared are starting to flirt again, and school is fine except for the mandatory student community service hours. She’s even learned to bank her psychic powers.

For the most part.

Then there’s Dane, the intriguing, infuriating guy who’s her community service student supervisor. He’s got “angry teen” down to a science. Without even trying, he slips past her emotional shields, challenging her to be the one thing she’s most afraid of—herself.

For Rhee, that’s as scary as the ghost haunting the silo behind Doyle’s ice cream parlor. A ghost that’s somehow connected to the shadows in Dane’s eyes. All she really wants is, for once in her life, to be normal. But for a girl like her, “normal” isn’t just an impossible dream, it can be downright dangerous.

Especially if it means embracing her gifts—and opening her heart.

She sees ghosts, accidentally moves things in fits of temper, and is a bit precognitive. She's also a teenager with all the assorted body image, boy and popularity issues associated with it. She claims she just wants to be normal--like an average teen, but what does that mean and is ordinary really what she wants to be?

Wiccan Cool deals with a variety of common issues (self esteem, sense of self, self-centeredness) within the framework of this mystery/slice-of-life-novel.

I really grew to like Rhiannon as she struggles with her typical fifteen-year-old self-centeredness when she is called to volunteer in a hospital pediatric cancer ward. It's an eye opening experience for her.

I'm buying a copy of this book for my daughter. Actually, since Wiccan Cool is the third in Traci Hall's Rhiannon Godfrey series (and the only one I've read thus far) I want to get the other two for her first. Wiccan Cool stands alone, but there are enough hints of the stories to pique my interest about the earlier books--Her Wiccan Wiccan Ways and Something Wiccan This Way Comes.

Product Description

What’s a girl to do when trouble finds her at every turn?

A Rhiannon Godfrey story.

Being different is nothing new for Rhiannon Godfrey. Neither is hiding who she really is to all but a select few. So far she’s managed to walk that line, but now someone is spreading rumors that the Godfreys’ New Age store is really a front for witchcraft, complete with cauldrons and eyes of newt.

The whole town is turning against them—even Rhee’s boyfriend is suspicious. Then there’s her ex-crush Matthew, who just showed up uninvited on her doorstep carrying a single suitcase—and a heavy secret.

Rhiannon tries to be good, she really does. But it’s hard when trouble pounces at every turn, and her unsuccessful spells seem to prove that science is the only path to enlightenment.

Hiding her gifts and running from confrontation is easier than standing up for what she believes in. But this time, there’s more at stake. And the possibility she may have to find the inner strength to banish one friend in order to save another.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun preteen book
I really enjoyed this book. It was fun and interesting and I had a hard time putting it down. Rhiannon`s character is strong, intelligent but easy to connect with. I mean its hard being a teenager but being a teenager of two Wiccan parents, living in a haunted farm house and having supernatural powers. I wish there were more books like this when I was a teen, it would have made my life as a teen feel a lot more normal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as the first Wiccan book
I downloaded this book because I really enjoyed the first book that Kindle provided for free.I wanted to know more about the characters and how Rhee was handling high school. This book, however, was not quite as good.Far more cliched and much more unrealistic about how I remember high school kids acting.

There is a scene in a bowling alley, that is just so completely unbelievable that I just cannot get past.No one would get off scott free after that.Plus, Jared's actions throughout the book were not well written.Very unlike the first book.

However, I liked finding out more about the secondary characters and the others of her "family".The freaks are no different than anyone else and high school does seem to stay with a person even after they have grown up.

I have downloaded the third book in this series.I hope it lives up to the first. For whatever reason, second books always seem to have problems compared to the first. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
The sleeve on the cover of this book, makes me want to put it out on the coffee table for people to pick up and read. The contents on the other hand, makes me wanna bury it in the yard. I thought this book would be a bit more lively in its writing, have beautiful glossy pictures and get into the background of the sabbats more. Its not at all what I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book or entertaining and decorating on the Sabbats
They have some great projects and recipes for all the wiccan holidays. I love the strawberry topiary tree project and will be making it for my next yule party!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars boring
There are a couple of good ideas in this book, but for the most part I found it boring. It doesn't feel like the author is actually pagan. It feels like it could have been written for christian holidays and then just tweaked for pagans- it lacks pagan soul. There are so many better books out there, don't waste your resources on this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical
Recipes, lore, activities, ideas.... all you must have handy to celebrate your sabbat with your family and friend.
Chapters on every sabbats are not too long so they won't let you confused with loads of conflicting projects, it's direct, simple and straight to the point. An useful purchase for any witch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
It could use a lot more photographs. Some of the best ideas were not in the photos so you have to read to find out. ... Read more

Product Description
"The Wiccan Minister's Manual, A Guide For Priests andPriestesses, " was inspired as a training aid for those who would like tobecome Wiccan Ministers, as well as an aid for Wiccan/Pagan Priests andPriestesses. The Craft is evolving, becoming more and more accepted by society, and there is beginning to be a definite distinction between Wiccan Laity andWiccan Clergy. Part One - Guidance - Making the spiritual connection topersonal deity through love, prayer, meditation, ritual, and myth and how toguide others to create their own personal connections. Part Two - Wiccanreligious philosophy and guidance - How to live a spiritual life in the modernworld. Part Three - various methods of healing mind, body and spirit -Including some legal pit-falls to avoid, plus chapter eleven presents anextensive discourse on Pastoral Counseling. Part Four deals with psychicself-defense and rituals of protection. Including House Clearings, Banishings, and Exorcism. Additionally, the author explains what to look for and what tolook out for while determining if an exorcism is really needed or if the clientis suffering from psychosis and is in need of a professional therapist. PartFive focuses upon the spiritual support roles. It covers, dealing with deathand dying, Funerals, Prison Ministry, Legal requirements of doing Handfastingsin all 50 states, plus a discourse on whether or not to incorporate. This workbegins to fill yet another gap in this area of the Wiccan religious structureas it brings back much of the older knowledge and philosophy that seems to bewaning from the collective Wiccan memory.Reviewed by Edain McCoy; "Kevin, I received my copy of"Wiccan Minister's Manual" It's terrific! You cover everything...Personally, I think you did a great job at making your book useful to alltrads." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Informative Guide
This book is very informative. From a Clergy point of view it's a must have. This book answers many questions I had not thought of and furthers my knowledge without having to experience some of the potholes. The section on death, dying, and performing at funerals, crossovers, handfastings are very good and answers many questions. The legal section is very well done and saves me a lot of time looking legal requirements up.
I suggest this book to anyone that is wanting to further their knowledge about the path of Clergy and helping others.

Well done!

3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
I'm sorry to be giving a negative review here.I really wanted to find depth in this work.Unfortunately it's just not up to the caliber of the author's book on crisis intervention.

Full of revisionist history and platitudes, and in some cases questionable philosophies, it urges us to consider topics that I would label basic, beginner study and fails to suggest anything deeper within those topics than I might find in any other well written book on Wicca.Very little practical advice is offered that actually pertains to serving as a spiritual advisor to a beginner.Furthermore and rather sadly, the work is filled with improper uses of words.

None of these faults is unique to this author in this field. Most of them are the same traps that the majority of authors on Wicca fall into.Still, I had high hopes that this book might be one of the few keepers, and it just wasn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Wiccan Clergy and Pagan Laity+
There are quite a few resource books for christian clergymen.Yet,this is an original look for the pagan clergy and the followers. The author ,it should be stated, witnessed the deadly aftermath created by the notorious Reverend Jim Jones of the Jonestown infamy. The author,Kevin Gardner, was a part of an army rescue unit, that recovered the bloated bodies of the zealous christian followers of Jim Jones' San Fransisco church. It should be noted too ,that Rev. Jones favored atheistic Marxism over monotheistic christianity ,yet had few worshippers willing to share in his utopian atheist vision. If history has shown us anything, monotheism has killed more people and destroyed more human societies, than any other concept in human history. And atheistic communism has never been able to destroy the folk-beliefs of the people or remove the individual from the natural environment of Nature. This book shows that Wicca is a credible religion, with accepted rituals and a universal code of conduct for its pagan brethern.A worthwhile reading for all serious followers of the earth-based religion of Wicca.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all Pagan Clergy
What a great book. I have been waiting for a book like this for a long time. A must have for all Pagan Clergy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wiccan Minister's Manual
A wonderful and in depth book that covers the very subjects that most of us encounter when trying to integrate everyday life with our belief's.
It covers the subjects of prayer and living in balance as well as approaches to healing ,meditation, protection and service to Craft , Deity , and Community. It also covers a subject sadly left out in most books , that of Death and Dying and how to assist those looking for comfort and council during these difficult times.
A book that would be of great service to all Priests and Priestesses , as well as solitaries looking for guidance on these issues and more.
