5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfully organized!
This book is not meant to be an encyclopedia but a guide to gardening in the midwestern and eastern US.After the opening discussion of general issues (planning, management, soil, light, nutrients, pH, etc.) come several sections, each of which provides gardening information and detailed lists of native plants according to several possible sites -- sun, shade, meadow, bog -- plus separate sections for ferns, for grasses, sedges, and rushes, and for native ground covers. This is exactly what I've been looking for!
A note to the reviewer who complained of the book's including the invasive Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife).Had you looked on p. 165 where it is cited in the Index, you would have seen this warning: "This introduced species with tall, magenta-colored spikes has become a noxious weed along stream banks and around ponds in the North, choking out many interesting native species.Purple Loosestrife is so aggressive that it should never be planted."

1-0 out of 5 stars Includes invasive species!
Don't buy this book!It says it lists native wildflowers, but lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) is listed in the table of contents. This species has been listed as an invasive species or noxious weed in about thirty states. Its sale is prohibited by law in several of those states.Obviously the authors did not do their homework. I wouldn't be surprized if there were other invasives listed in there too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, don't like how it's presented
This is one of the better books when it comes to information about growing native plants. The authors are not shy about their opinions and the book is better for it.

On the down side, the book is not nearly as exhaustive as Cullina's books.I also don't like that it puts the photographs apart from the text, as this makes for some annoying page-flipping. The quality of the photographs is also rather amateurish.

A tepid recommendation would be a hearty one with a better layout and improved pictures.

2-0 out of 5 stars too garbled
I have an extensive collection of books on native plants - and the plants
to go with them! This book is one of my least favorite. The information is
not well sorted or presented.I would recommend C. Colston Burrell's
"Encyclopedia of Wildflowers" in preference to this book.
Or Carole Otteson's "Native Plant Primer" with trees and shrubs in addition to
herbaceous perennials.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of native flowers!
I never thought I would take a gardening book to bed with me. This one is a pleasure to read and taught me a lot about identification and gardening uses of native wildflowers of the southeast and northeast. It's the first book I grab to look up a species.Lots of full color photographs have made it much easier for me to identify the plants I want at the nursery. The two authors are coming from different perspectives - one has a natural meadow/woodlands landscape and the other uses native plants in a more controlled garden setting along with exotics.Between the two of them, the reader gets a balanced idea of the possibilities of introducing native flowers to their own yards.I only wish the index combined scientific names with common names, rather than having two separate indexes. It would also be convenient if the plant photos were on the same pages as the descriptions. But those are minor criticisms of an overall superb book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste for everyone
Firstly, the smug "you get what you pay for" crowd can go sip tea with your pinkies out. I understand that this is a free version of a book, converted by volunteers, but that doesn't mean it HAS to be inferior to what it COULD be. If you believe your volunteer work can be substandard just because you're donating your time, maybe you should stick with paid work.

The "community of volunteers" that "converted (this book) from its physical edition to the digital format" not only wasted their time by producing the Kindle version of this book, they have managed to waste the time of everyone who bothers to download this version. It is beyond me why anyone thinks it's worthwhile to publish only the text of a book that relies heavily on illustrations or photographs.Rather than continue to post these idiotic, frustrating versions of "FREE" illustrated books (minus the pictures) for the Kindle, it would be much better for Amazon to simply post a page that says, "Don't bother downloading this if you would like to see the images described by the text."

If you're interested, you can find the illustrations from this book in the HTLM .zip at Project Gutenberg. While I appreciate the efforts of the "community of volunteers", I wish they would quit posting books for the Kindle until it has been properly and fully converted -- including images -- in the form the author intended.

I can't help but wonder how much Amazon has to do with publishing, or at least not discouraging, Kindle books like this (with necessary images not included.) They love to shout about the availability of "free books" in their Kindle ads, and allowing junk like this definitely adds to the number of free books.

This book is a helpful guide to identifying 500 species of Florida plant life, including rare as well as common wild flowers and characteristic trees, shrubs, vines, and ferns. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for amateur botanist
If the photo is not sufficient to quickly identify the plant, the descriptions are concise and tell you exactly what you need to know.Differences with similar species are often noted, along with blooming time and habitat.

Also, the author describes the different habitats in florida and if the plant is not native, the author calls that out.I very much enjoyed using this book in the field to identify plants.

1-0 out of 5 stars Arrogant authors are looking down their noses
It is obvious that the authors have lost sight of the new flower lover they are tying to reach. Probably academics trying to impress otherselitists. The best books I have usedwhile learning flowers back in the coal regions, and later in the deserts of Arizona are those that have the flowers arranged by color. The other esoteric stuff can be in the body and the species cross referenced by key number, whatever.I agree with Dr. Weinberger, another critic. As a new comer to Florida, scouting flowers, or driving along the road, findinga new flower is exciting, but using the book for identification, is most frustrating. As it is the pages are a bit too slick for the traditional use relegated to old catalogs. As it is, I probably donate to some thrift store.`
I advise the authors to tear the pages out, group the flowers by color, add some reference code to relate it others of he same family and republish.I bet they will make a killing.I'll bemost honored to review the new book and more pleased to receive a complimentary copy

2-0 out of 5 stars Photos not Adequate often to Identify Flowers!
In many cases (even when a plant we knew) the photos were not sufficiently detailed to IDENTIFY THE FLOWER OR PLANT!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Guide But Not the Most User-Friendly
The inside cover has a great chart on how to identify flowers (petal number, leaf shape, etc.).In the back it has an index that helps you narrow down which flower it is by starting with its color and then looking at its other character traits.I'm a beginner simply wanting to identify the wildflowers in my yard.It took me an hour to identify my first flower. I'm used to wildflower books that are divided by color. This guide isn't. It does have nice photographs and a simple description.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous photographs, excellent information, easy to use
This book is a very useful guide to a large variety of Florida plants, as well as a superb collection of truly stunning photographs. It can be used for simple visual identification, but its organization by family and itsbinomial key make it user-friendly for the botanist as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the rock gardening classics
I knew I was on to something when this title kept cropping up in gardening articles and in other gardening books. Author H. Lincoln Foster is a premier authority on how to build a rock garden. He lists plants he has tried with great success and those with which he has experienced failure. Written in a comfortable conversational style and illustrated by his wife, Laura Louise Foster. A quote from the dust jacket: "The heart of the book is an alphabetical descriptive catalogue of more than 400 genera, comprising over 1900 individual plants, with cultural directions for each. The range runs from spring-flowering bulbs to autumn asters, from ground covers to the rarest of alpine treasure, from creeping herbs to broad-leaved evergreens and dwarf trees, from favorite perennial standbys to suitable ferns and the most pleasing of wildflowers."

5-0 out of 5 stars Down-to-earth, practical advice on gardening
Although this book is titled "Rock Gardening", it has great appeal to all gardeners. It includes introductory information on how to create rock, bog and woodland gardens, how to propagate plants, maintenance, etc. But the best part is the comprehensive plant descriptions, with practical advice on their cultural requirements, difficulty and propagation.Although there are no color pictures, I find this is the book I rely upon most for accurate information on lesser known rock garden and woodland plants. ...
