5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't ask for more!
I've wanted to be a wildlife film-maker for as long as I can remember but knew it was competitive and had little idea how to get started. Then I found this book. I suddenly feel like I know so much more about the industry and have much more confidence. The case studies of many of my heroes were fascinating and made me feel like I did have a chance after all. I also have a much clearer idea how the wildlife film-making business works and how professional movies are made. I had no idea how many different people and jobs were involved in film-making and this book covers them all. This is the only book on this topic ever written - so if you want to work in wildlife film-making you can't really do without it. ... Read more

Product Description
Experience the wildlife of Texas, up-close and personal, through the eyes of one of the country's most talented nature photographers. Where else can you look a coyote in the eye while it licks its chops? Spy the long tongue of a Nine-banded Armadillo as it drinks? Watch a rare Blue-faced Ringtail dragonfly eating its prey? Glimpse a Sanderling's feet spread midair as it scurries down the beach? See an American White Pelican's pouch turned inside-out as it yawns?

Award-winning photographer Greg Lasley has been taking pictures of wildlife for thirty years, and although he has photographed some of the most exotic creatures and remote places on earth, in Greg Lasley's Texas Wildlife Portraits he gives homage to his favorite place for photography: his home state. With more than a hundred stunning color photographs, this book reflects Lasley's penchant for the state's insect life, especially dragonflies, as well as his long affection for Texas birds. In addition, many hours of patient waiting or the happenstance of a chance encounter have yielded fine images of Texas mammals and reptiles in their habitats.

Veteran Texas naturalists John and Gloria Tveten open the text with an introduction to the man behind the camera. From there, photographer's comments and insightful photo captions help vividly re-create the moment each image was shot--what the animal was doing, what the photographer was thinking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greg Laslely's Texas Wildlife Portraits (Loius Lindsey Merrick Natural Environment)
Greg Laslely's Texas Wildlife Portraits (Loius Lindsey Merrick Natural Environment) is a beautiful and interesting book with fabulous photographs by a man who is master photographer and an amazing naturalist. The book is beautifully laid out with stunning images on each page. There is a section of Photographer's comments about his interest in nature which started when he was a child, and his photography which started as a way of documenting rare animals or interesting aspects of them. All of the images have a comment by Greg which tells about his experience when taking the picture, and about the animal(s), which to me is one of the most fascinating aspects of the book. The fact that I have been on birding trips where Greg was one of the leaders, adds to my appreciation of him. He was always helpful, especially to those of us who were new to the sport, or in unfamiliar territory. Like many birders he was clearly more interested in sharing information than in being an "expert", and went out of his way to show me birds that I had missed. I have purchased a number of copies of this book to give as gifts.

Give yourself a gift and get this book. Even people not heavily into nature will enjoy it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect to learn very much...
While Lucock's beautifully illustrated book clearly marks him as a good naturalist and an excellent photographer the book falls far short of offering any real instruction (save flash photography) on the matter of nature photography technique. The book reads more as Lucock's personal log on trips to Turkey, Grand Canyon, etc.The book serves more as a cursory study on the natural history of his subjects rather than as a serious photographic instructional book.Too bad because his photos are spectacular and if only he had shared his "thinking" behind the shots the book would have been much more enjoyable.

Lucock clearly is a master at close up photogaphy, making the photos themselves, worthy of buying the book.Do not expect to learn a lot though. ... Read more

Product Description

Gardens mean different things to different people. For some, they are merely another room, an outdoor extension to the house. For others, they are places of relaxation that provide an escape from the outside world. But for most garden owners, the relationship with their plot of land is much more than simply passive: passionate and committed, they enjoy gardening for its own sake, and part of the fun is the prospect of connecting with nature, be it with the plants they cultivate and nurture or with the diverse native wildlife that finds its way into their gardens. This comprehensive photographic guide helps nature enthusiasts to identify the native plants and animals they come across in their gardens, be they welcome or otherwise. Learning about any given species' requirements and its role in garden ecology will allow gardeners to adapt their approach to gardening, enabling them to encourage wildlife while also protecting plants from damage. This reference includes birds, mammals, insects, spiders, trees, wildflowers, fungi, and pond life, along with features on bird nests and eggs and tracks, trails, and signs. Detailed photographs and species descriptions help readers identify each species quickly and easily.

My son is 14 years old and loves to read about the wilderness and he is really enjoying this book. He also takes it to school to share with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply gorgeous
For an oversized visual approach packing in color photo close-ups of North American wildlife, David Jones' title can't be beat: it pairs delightful full-page color photos with natural history, descriptions of research studies and findings, and protection routines, creating a catalog of wildlife which draws readers in with fine color and completes the education task with plenty of facts. As suitable for high school holdings as for public libraries, NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE is simply gorgeous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for a lazy Sunday afternoon...
This would be the kind of book you will want to read when you don't want to think too much about what you are reading. You just breeze through the pages admiring the photography and the occasional useful insight into the animal kingdom...and, believe me, there are a lot of pages. This is a big book and definitely an excellent read for anyone fascinated by nature and wildlife.

This is a fantastic book on nature in North America. The pictures are large and glossy, and the pages are thick.Somehow they cover every animal in North America with a large picture, and some writing. It is writtensmoothly, however, and isn't like a catalogue. The information provided isnot too much, nor too little.Just the perfect information. It is a largebook.14 inches in length, and 12 inches in width. So the pictures arehuge, as is the text.A must have for nature lovers. ...
