Product Description
National Geographic: The Wildlife Photographs is organized by habitat. For each habitat community - desert, ocean, forest, savanna - the book presents photographs that render a sense of place, people in the field facing the photographic & physical hardships of extreme conditions, and a variety of wildlife of every description. Organization by habitat allows the author to present the very different challenges both for wildlife and for journalists in each environment, and the chapters tell dramatically different stories. By displaying entire ecological communities, we show the interrelationships among the creatures that inhabit a particular place. The delicacy of these relationships and the associated conservation implications are obvious but the conservation message is offered with subtlety. National Geographic has expanded the world's understanding and appreciation of wildlife and this book tells that story, displaying it with high drama. To complement the broad geographic approach to each chapter, sidebar features focus on individual photographers at work in the habitals of individual wildlife species.Amazon.com Review
National Geographic: The Wildlife Photographs has just what we expect from the National Geographic Society: unforgettable images of animals in the wild. Page after page takes viewers into the private world of animals and reveals such sights as a dense furry nest of bats, the perfectly etched feathers on the back of a bald eagle's head, cheetah cubs dining on an impala, or a bleak forest of garden eels at the bottom of the Red Sea. The book is not without a mission: essays on habitat and endangered ecosystems underscore how precious the lives of these creatures are. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great photographers, photographs - VERY POOR reproductions!
I used to enjoy everything from NG - magazine (still very good) books etc., however this book continues to show the NGS as it slides downhill. The photographic reproduction is marginal at best (as in so many of their latest offerings) where great, often heroic photos are shown soft or seemingly out of focus. The paper stock is awful. This could have been a wonderful book, and it winds up as almost an insult to past and present Geographic photographers. I'd gladly pay ten dollars more if they could work to improve it. I suppose that's what happens when a non-profit organization moves to a for-profit one! ... Read more

Product Description
This book is aimed at anyone who is considering or beginning underwater photography, but also has the scope to help the more experienced photographer develop specific techniques, perfect particular subjects, and give advice on entering competitions and selling your work.

The subjects covered by each chapter are designed to allow you to pick your entry level and then aid both the beginner or more experienced photographer to expand and hone their skills within each technique before moving onto the next.

Photography underwater is potentially the most difficult of photographic disciplines, as most techniques that work well on the surface usually fail miserably underwater, and monitoring one's life support system, buoyancy and sea conditions complicate things even more.Using the step-by-step techniques helps the reader find all the information required for a particular technique presented in a relaxed and easy-to-grasp style.

5-0 out of 5 stars great!
i've taken a few pictures before ive gotten this book. but i loved the way it broke down everything and basically taught u from scratch. everything u need to know about underwater photography. when i got this book it was my bible for about a year i read it in and out multiple times and still use it today as a reference. i think the best part about this book is the pictures. and the fact that he tells u different techniques and shows how it ends up on the exposure. and how every single picture in the book (hundreds) was obtained, from shutter speed to strobe setting was also very helpful. lots of time underwater and film was used to make this book. i suggest this book to anyone who is even thinking of taking a camera below the surface. or someone who already has. because of this my photoalbum is stunning and better than i ever thought it could be.

5-0 out of 5 stars All-in-one for beginning as well as advanced photographers.
As an amateur surface photographer, I truly enjoyed reading this book. It provides me comprehensive basic knowledge on the subject as well as more in-depth knowledge to build on down the road. The photos throughout the book greatly help convey the author's ideas and the readers to quickly grasp the concept. I recommend this book to anyone considering taking up underwater photography. Note: Since the book was written by a British author, at the beginning I was bit confused with the measuring system (meters instead of feet) and the currency (pounds instead of US dollars). To know the conversion rate at the start would be very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated book
With over 250 photographs and illustrations, each with a fully detailled description on strobe and apperture settings. If you own a housed camera, this book is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding for advanced land photographers going U/W !
Excellent "how to" guide covering technical and asthetic aspects of U/W photography. The author spends little time on basics and equipment, and plunges into artful considerations: composition, lighting, perspective, using models, etc. A Londoner who competes internationally in U/WPhotography, Webster lays out ideas and creative techniques such as doubleexposures using macro first then wide angle, entering competions, beginnermarketing, etc.A must for U/W housing shooters! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The title says it all in this marvelous retrospective of the work of the renowned BBC Natural History Unit. In addition to fascinating descriptions of filming techniques Parsons gives behind-the-scenes exclusives, and hot gossip on the personalities involved. I particularly enjoyed the details of David Attenborough's burdensome riders for location filming - his trailer was to be stocked at all times with chilled Evian, fettucine alfredo, grilled fish, 200 gardenias and a huge bowl of M&Ms (no red ones). Parsons recalls how Sir David nearly stormed out of the gig when filming gorillas in the Cameroon rainforest after a runner fouled-up on the mineral water; but pro that he is, Attenborough soldiered on, making do with San Pellegrino and going on to provide the world with some of the most startling images of human interaction with these majestic primates. ... Product Description
The definitive nature book, Wildlife is master photographer Mitsuaki Iwago's glorious homage to the animal kingdom, an abundant treasury of more than 450 photographs culled from a lifetime of work and presented in an unputdownable format. Iwago is one of the world's preeminent wildlife photographers, his images repeatedly lauded as superbly composed, dramatic, intelligent, and beautiful. His first book, Serengeti, was called one of the finest wildlife books ever published and has sold over 80,000 copies. Wildlife boasts the same riveting perspective, but takes us a good deal further, presenting wildlife of all kinds on every continent. Organized by region, from the Galapagos Islands to the plains of Africa, from the forests of India to the ice floes of Alaska, Wildlife is the rare nature book that is international in scope. Turn these pages and the panoply of creation dazzles the mind and the eye. Asian elephants, African lions, Antarctic penguins, North American otters-the world's myriad creatures show themselves in this brilliantly colorful tour. Here is an absolutely essential volume for all who love animals.Amazon.com Review
Mitsuaki Iwago thinks like an animal. How else to explain hisability to get so close to, so intimate with, the creatures hephotographs? In Wildlife, Iwago captures the beauty, savagery, and whimsy of the animal world with more than 450 pictures taken allover the globe. It's hard to pick highlights from such a richcollection, but the Antarctic section rivals any photo book on thesubject; Iwago's graceful color images of sunbathing seals,rock-hopping penguins, and soaring albatross are set against a stark, unforgiving landscape. In the African section, Iwago definitely putsthe "wild" in "wildlife": in one brutal series, a family of cheetahsbrings down their prey, casually killing with the ease of practicedpredators and then licking blood from their chops. But he is alsoadept at finding the gentler moments of animal life, like an old redkangaroo resting quietly in the sun. Wildlife offers brief, intimate glances at the daily lives of hundreds of species, from thelens of a man who seems to understand what it is to be ananimal. --Therese Littleton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wildlife by Mitsuaki Iwago
This is a spectacular book which depicts classic sites from
Hawaii to Australia to the African continent. Lava is shown
pouring from the Pacific. The Iguanas of Galopagos are shown in
their natural setting. The Hawaiian monk seals are shown in
full color. There is a good rendition of praise for the Serengeti.
This volume should be acquired before planning any major trip or
expedition to the areas covered. It is well worth the price charged. In addition, the student in your house can use this work
for any world geography or culture project.

3-0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't "Pop"
Mitsuaki Iwago is one of the world's great wildlife photographers. This volume presents 450 color photographs of more than 200 species taken around the globe. Each of the pictures is technically perfect and worth an admiring glance. And yet there is something missing from the book.

It's not as if these were not exciting shots. Some of the pictures are quite spectacular. For example, the photographs of a huge herd of wildebeests crossing the Mara River in Africa, where they are attacked by crocodile, are absolutely arresting. But the problem is that there is nothing that distinguishes these shots from those of the other great wildlife photographers.Indeed, I remember seeing a similar series by Joe and Mary Ann McDonald.

One of the side effects of readily available high-tech equipment and relatively cheap travel to anywhere around the globe is that the bar has been raised for nature photographers.Because we are all familiar with really good nature photography, even if we have only seen it in a travel advertisement, we've come to expect more. It's not enough to have a good wildlife photograph; it has to be a great photograph. As Cathy and Gordon Illg say in their book "Dynamic Wildlife Photography", a wildlife photograph must be beyond documentary; or as Moose Peterson says, it has to "pop".Unfortunately most of Iwago's pictures don't go beyond documentary. All one has to do is compare the pictures in this book to something like those in Art Wolfe's "The Living Wild" to see what I mean.

It's not that Iwago can't make those pictures with something extra. He includes a picture of a New Zealand takahes in a grassy field with a lake, mountains and a cloud-filled sky beyond the bird. This picture tells you something about where this bird lives. But opposite is a standard portrait of the bird that is mere reporting.

Perhaps it's just too much to expect that, in a book of so many photographs, all will find that something extra. On the other hand there are a number of pictures that must have been taken in the middle of the day, or with a film without much latitude, where the black shadows seriously detract from the image.

At the end of the book, there are listings by class (e.g., mammals) that provide more information on the pictured animals.Unfortunately the order of arrangement is indiscernible, which reduces the helpfulness of these notes.I also found the captions for the photographs were not very helpful, and in some cases, incorrect.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Stand-out Book
Someone else who reviewed this book said Iwago had an artistic eye and that is SO TRUE!It never ceases to amaze me how someone can capture in a photo that which "they see" and it is conveyed so we too "see"!I've been collecting various Photography books and this one is my absolute favorite!!It is true that you don't get much text, much explanation, but this is such a gifted photographer.I sit and relax, enjoying these photos again and again and again...transported away to places I'll never get to and creatures I'll never see in person. God's creation is so varied and awesome and Iwago has captured it in so many ways.I have bought extra used copies to give to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular

A portfolio of Nigel Dennis’s best work selected from 30,000 images of Africa’s spectacular wildlife, taken over a period of 10 years. The stunning larger than life photographs--over 200 in total--cover most of the larger mammals in Africa, broken down into six main groupings together with separate chapters on birds and reptiles, as well as a chapter on Madagascar.

This collection of photographs is thus a tribute to an inspiring naturalist and an extraordinary artist who has sought to capture the very essence of the land and the animals he has grown to love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book, well-written, good recommendations
This is a terrific book with good recommendations and illustrations, and alike Jim Zuckerman's courses, it is well organized and well written.Jim speaks in the first person with his classes and tells what he has done and in the necessary order. This is important because it makes directions work if followed precisely, I learned from experience.

I'm very thankful that I purchased this book, and recommend it to others whether or not you capture in film or digitally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, succinct
This little book is a great read. It makes a series of important points very succinctly (essentially one point on every double page spread) about how to capture the elusive `drama' in a photograph. The example photographs are very, very well chosen to illustrate the points. The explanations are well-written and clear. I made copious notes while reading the book and I refer to these notes before I go out on a shoot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will improve your creativity
This book is great for developing creativity in nature photography. The author isolates and illustrates different concepts of a photograph, such as perspective, color, light, etc. When focusing on these concepts while composing a shot, one can learn how to make the pictures dramatic like those of the pros. Zuckerman really makes the complicated concept of a "dramatic" photograph simple by breaking up the concepts to look for in a shot. great picrues too!

5-0 out of 5 stars very cool book
As with most of Jim Zuckerman's books, this one was incredibly informative. The 12 chapterscover the areas in photography thatare the most helpful in getting the best shots of nature and the outdoors.
Fromperspectiveto motion to exposure to self-critique, Jim's knowledge of photography is second to none.I know of no one out there shooting who understands the mechanics of this medium more than him.And it shows in his photography, which is simply amazing.
This is a must buy for any one serious about seeing and capturing nature better in their photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching Guide
I purchased this book and I have used many of the artistic techniques and ideas to improve my nature photography. I would advise any one who is serious in nature photography to use the ideas Jim outlined in this book. I can't see how anyone who actually studies this book to not be satisfied with the content. I also have looked at a lot of this authors work and I think he is one of the best nature photographers in the business. His work is outstanding. ... Read more
