Product Description
Comparison of the Microsoft Windows and Linux computer operating systems is a common topic of discussion among their users. Windows is the most popular proprietary personal computer operating system, while Linux is the most prominent operating system that is free software (note that some proprietary components, such as compiled, binary only drivers provided by hardware manufacturers, are included in many Linux distributions). Both operating systems not only compete for user base in the personal computer market, but also compete in the server and embedded systems markets and are used in homes, schools, businesses, government offices, and supercomputers. Windows dominates in the desktop and personal computer markets with about 90% of the desktop market share, and accounted for about 66% of all servers sold (not used) in the year 2007.[citation needed] In server revenue market share (2007Q4) Windows achieved 36.3% and Linux achieved 12.7%. As of June 2009, Linux powered 88.6% of the world's most powerful supercomputers, compared to Windows' 1.0%. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best (only useful) study guide for Windows Architecture exam
To my surprise, this book is far better than the new MS kit for studying for the Windows Systems Architecture exams, even though it is much older.Every question that I missed on the new (practice) exam is in here.Much easier than nivigating through the MSDN.

2-0 out of 5 stars A hastily assembled book of dubious value
The only value that this book has is as a study guide for Microsoft Certification exams, and even there it is pretty weak. This book comes from Microsoft Press, which publishes some excellent titles, and it sports a 1995 publication date. Taken together, one would expect an above-average, up-to-date reference. Unfortunately, it falls short on both counts.

"Readings" is simply a collection of excepts from Microsoft manuals, briefings, and outrightpropaganda, dating as far back as 1992.No obvious attempt has been made to update the material or to edit it to fit the context of this book.As a result, references to nonexistent figures and chapters proliferate.Nor has there been much effort to validate the material. In cases where the technology has changed since the original sources were written (or perhaps the original sources contained an error) the incorrect material has been faithfully preserved here.

Since the chapters and paragraphs are excerpted from larger works, the book has limited value as a high level reference, explaining little in detail. On the other hand, when technical details are included, they are presented without much of a supporting context, making the book a poor technical reference as well.

This volume might adequately serve as supplementary material when studying for Microsoft's "Windows Operating System Architecture" exams, but better third-party sources exist. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars so bad I stopped reading it
From the title of this book, one would expect a discussion of the content of the MCDST exams and a preview of what areas to concentrate on based on the exam objectives.Content wise, the book falls far short in that area. What this appears to be a series of poorly edited blurbs about the MCDST, haphazardly strung together and in many cases, redundantly.I stopped reading it after a few minutes, and was so disappointed by it that it became the first item I'd ever written a review of for Amazon in the hope that I'd save somebody the trouble of checking this out.

Save your money for something else if you're prepping for an exam. ... Read more
